The attack follows the abduction of hundreds of students, pupils, and staff members from St. Mary Secondary and Primary School in Papiri, Agwara LGA. Five days after the abduction of over 300 St. Mary Catholic School children in Niger State, another tragedy has unfolded as 20 farmers, including pregnant women, were taken from their farmlands during a routine harvest. Bandits reportedly kidnapped 20 farmers, among them four pregnant women and several children, in Unguwan-Kawo, Erena Ward of Shiroro Local Government Area. Daily Trust reported that the victims were abducted from their farm at about 4 p.m. on Wednesday, November 26, while harvesting rice. One resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said his nephew was among those kidnapped. He stated that the farm is located just about 500 metres from Erena town, where a military camp is situated. When contacted, the spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said he would verify the report. The attack follows the abduction of hundreds of students, pupils, and staff members from St. Mary Secondary and Primary School in Papiri, Agwara LGA. Armed men reportedly invaded the Papiri community during school hours, overwhelming the area and taking away the victims in a coordinated raid. Residents said the attackers arrived in large numbers, causing panic as teachers and pupils scrambled for safety. The gunmen forced many into waiting vehicles, while others were reportedly taken away on motorcycles. The incident sparked immediate outrage, with parents and community members flooding the school premises searching desperately for missing children. However, on Sunday, the school authorities announced the return of at least 50 of the victims. https://saharareporters.com/2025/11/27/bandits-abduct-20-farmers-including-pregnant-women-niger-state-community-days-after-st |

Former President Goodluck Jonathan is currently trapped in Guinea Bissau where the military announced take-over earlier in the day. The Nigerian leader alongside hundreds of foreign observers are unable to leave the country where elections took place and results were about to be officially declared. Daily Trust understands that hundreds of foreign observers who raced to the airport in a bid to leave the country after the coup was announced are currently stranded. A group of military officers claimed “total control” of the country, a day after two leading candidates – President Umaro Sissoco Embalo and Fernando Dias – each declared victory. Calling themselves the “High Military Command for the Restoration of Order”, the officers ordered the immediate suspension of the electoral process “until further notice”. They also ordered the closure of all land, air and sea borders and an overnight curfew. “I have been deposed,” Embalo told French broadcaster France24 in a phone call, adding that he was “currently at the general staff headquarters”. The head of the main opposition PAIGC party, Domingos Simoes Pereira, has also been arrested, Haque said. “As well, we’ve just heard that the military is trying to cut off the Internet. There’s a curfew in place.” He added that the army officer leading the coup, Denis N’Canha, served as the head of the presidential guard. “The man supposed to protect the president himself has put the president under arrest,” Haque said. Upon his arrival in the country, Jonathan, who is head of the West African Elders Forum (WAEF) observer group, posted on social media, “We arrived in Bissau this evening as members of the West African Elders Forum (WAEF) Election Mission ahead of Guinea Bissau’s presidential and parliamentary polls scheduled for November 23, 2025. We wish the people of Guinea Bissau a peaceful, inclusive and transparent elections.” Two days later, he posted another update: OUT ON ELECTION DAY IN BISSAU. “Members of the West African Elders Forum (WAEF) Election Mission today conducted visits to some polling stations in Bissau as voting commenced in Guinea-Bissau’s 2025 presidential and parliamentary elections. WAEF extends warm regards to the people and authorities of Guinea-Bissau and wishes for a smooth voting process and a peaceful, stable post-election period that strengthens unity and democratic governance,” he wrote. Jonathan’s last update on Bissau was yesterday when he wrote that he went on a condolence visit to the family of late Guinea Bissau President, Manuel Sefiro Nhamado, “to condole with them on the recent passing of their matriarch and former First Lady, Mrs. Isolina Da Fonseca Nhamajo.” He had posted five pictures he snapped with the family. Trapped but safe Attempts to confirm the whereabouts and safety of Jonathan from Ikechukwu Eze, his spokesman, did not yield result as his telephone line was out of reach. However, Ima Niboro, a former spokesman of the ex-President, confirmed to Daily Trust that the Nigerian leader, who recently marked his 68th birthday was still in Guniea Bissau when the coupists struck. However, he said Jonathan confirmed that he was safe. Niboro told Daily Trust that he spoke with Jonathan who assured him that he was safe. In a statement, Jonathan alongside other African leaders in the country condemned the coup. “We express deep concern with the announcement of a coup d’etat by the armed forces, while the nation was waiting for the announcement of the results. It’s regrettable that this announcement came at a time when the missions had just concluded meeting with the two leading presidential candidates, who assured us of their willingness to accept the will of the people.” “We deplore this blatant attempt to disrupt the democratic process and the gains that have been achieved thus far. We request the African Union and the ECOWAS to take the necessary steps to restore constitutional order. “We express concern of the arrests of top officials including those that are in charge of the electoral process. In this regard, we urge the armed forces to immediately release the detained officials to allow the country’s electoral process to proceed to its conclusion. “We call on the people of Guinea Bissau to remain calm, and we reaffirm our commitment to supporting the Country on its democratic path, and in this respect, we underscore the importance of preserving peace, stability, and the well-being of the Bissau-Guinean people during this sensitive period.,” the statement read. https://dailytrust.com/breaking-jonathan-trapped-in-guinea-bissau/?noamp=available |

This development comes despite the President Bola Tinubu-led Nigerian government’s repeated claims that it has stopped subsidising the cost of petroleum in the country. A SaharaReporters' review of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) financial statement for the year ended December 2024 has shown that a sum of N7.1 trillion was said to have been spent on fuel subsidy to defray energy costs. The expense was tagged "energy security expense" in the financial report. According to the document, the energy security expense occurs "when there is differential between exchange rate used to freeze the Premium Motor Spirit ex-coastal price and the prevailing exchange rate at point of import settlement." "The amount is charged against what should have been paid to the federation accounts monthly." A sum of N4.8trillion was recorded to have been spent on the same item in 2023. This development comes despite the President Bola Tinubu-led Nigerian government’s repeated claims that it has stopped subsidising the cost of petroleum in the country. Data by the Nigeria Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (NEITI) shows that the highest amount spent on subsidy by the Nigerian government between 2005 and 2021 was incurred in 2011, when a sum of N2.1 trillion was paid. In 2022, however, the Nigerian government paid N3.36 trillion as fuel subsidies, meaning that between 2005 and 2022, the highest subsidy paid stood at N3.36 trillion. With N4.8 trillion spent in 2023, the N7.1 trillion recorded for 2024 becomes the highest ever spent between 2005 and 2024, a twenty-year period. Upon assuming office on May 29, 2023, President Bola Tinubu announced the removal of subsidy, citing the need to stop wastage in governance and increase revenue for development. It remains unclear why the government incurred even higher subsidy-related expenses after the announced removal. https://saharareporters.com/2025/11/25/nnpc-report-shows-tinubu-government-spent-n71trillion-subsidies-2024-captured-energy |

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has dismissed President Bola Tinubu’s withdrawal of police officers from VIPs as political grandstanding which will not yield any meaningful results in combating the crisis of insecurity in the country. In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party said resorting to “this same old move” confirms government’s lack of appreciation of the complexity of the security situation in the country and what needs to be done. The ADC called for a holistic national security strategy that integrates all security agencies as a holistic counter-insurgency force. “The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has dismissed the recent announcement by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu directing the withdrawal of police personnel from VIP duty.” “While the directive makes for good headlines, it is not new and demonstrates the government’s lack of understanding of the true nature and complexity of Nigeria’s worsening security crisis. A country battling terrorism, banditry, mass abductions, and violent crime cannot afford to confuse public relations for policy. “To start with, this is not the first time we are hearing this from the APC government. In 2025 alone, such order has been given twice by the IGP, whom we believe was acting on the directive of the President. But nothing happened. “Nevertheless, even if the President succeeds in relieving the police of VIP duties, we must face the bigger concern that by their training, mentality and orientation, these policemen are ill-suited and ill-equipped for the desperate emergency that we face. “Therefore, the dramatic gesture of withdrawing police protection from VIPs may pander to populist sentiment, but it does not address the problem. “The government claims that this announcement would add 100,000 men to the police. While this may fill some gaps in numerical strength, the real problem is not the number. It is the fact that even our military are finding it difficult to cope with the sophistication and adaptability of the insurgents, not to talk of police men who are ill equipped, ill trained and ill motivated for the complex task of counter-insurgency. “We find it even more intriguing that while withdrawing policemen from the VIPs, the government is replacing them with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSDC) whose mandate include Disaster Risk Reduction and Management, community protection and educating the people on safety measures. “Nigeria’s security challenges must be addressed comprehensively, not cosmetically. What the country needs is not the reshuffling of personnel for headlines, but a coherent national security strategy anchored in modernisation, intelligence, and institutional integration. “For the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to do this work, they must be restructured, reequipped, and retrained to confront today’s threats with suitable tools. This work is urgent, and half measures will not suffice. “Moreover, this government must tell Nigerians the truth. Where is the data supporting the claim that 100,000 officers have been withdrawn from VIP duties?” https://dailytrust.com/nigerias-security-challenge-beyond-police-adc-tells-tinubu/?noamp=available |

The development was disclosed by Presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, who confirmed that the closed-door briefing took place at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Mr. Tosin Adeola Ajayi, on Friday night met with President Bola Tinubu to provide an update on the nation’s security situation. The development was disclosed by Presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, who confirmed that the closed-door briefing took place at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. Although details of the meeting were not made public, Onanuga said the DSS boss presented a comprehensive assessment of current security challenges and ongoing counter-measures across the country. According to him, the briefing was part of the administration’s routine engagements with security chiefs as the government intensifies efforts to curb banditry, terrorism and other emerging threats. The DSS, as Nigeria’s lead domestic intelligence agency, regularly provides intelligence reports to the presidency, particularly during periods of heightened tension or major security operations. Friday’s meeting comes amid renewed concerns over attacks in several states and growing calls for stronger federal intervention. The Presidency is expected to issue further updates after consultations with other security agencies. SaharaReporters reported on Friday that President Bola Tinubu-led Nigerian government had said that it was not denying the scale of killings across the country but is taking "significant steps" to address security challenges in Nigeria. The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, who stated this while featuring on Channels Television’s programme on Friday night, said “Yes, we have people being killed, no doubt about that, and the government is not shying away or denying this,” the minister said. He explained that some deaths arise from religious tensions, economic pressures, and persistent communal clashes, especially in the Middle Belt. Idris added that no administration gains anything from allowing such violence and noted that the President is “deeply saddened” by every life lost. “Do we have people killed? Yes. Is it a good thing? No. Is the government doing anything? Quite a lot. “We should not have a situation where anybody is killed, whether Christians or Muslims,” the minister said. The information minister once again dismissed suggestions of religious genocide, insisting that both Christians and Muslims suffer from extremist violence. “You have jihadist extremism coming from the North-East, and this is a sixteen-year struggle,” he noted. He stressed that the extremists kill both Muslims and Christians, making the genocide narrative inaccurate. The minister added that before President Donald Trump’s redesignation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC), President Tinubu had already overhauled the security architecture by replacing service chiefs to strengthen operations. https://saharareporters.com/2025/11/22/dss-director-general-ajayi-meets-president-tinubu-update-security-situation |

However, in an update issued Friday evening, Daniel Atori, media aide to the state CAN chairman clarified that “215 pupils and students, including 12 teachers,” were taken during the raid. The Niger State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has said that 227 people, including teachers and students, were abducted when bandits stormed St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools in Papiri, Agwara LGA, in the early hours of Friday. The attack, which occurred between 2am and 3am, initially left the exact number of abductees unclear. However, in an update issued Friday evening, Daniel Atori, media aide to the state CAN chairman clarified that “215 pupils and students, including 12 teachers,” were taken during the raid. The news of the abduction was broken by SaharaReporters. Multiple community sources who visited the school after the attack confirmed the invasion, describing it as a coordinated operation that lasted between 2am and 3am. Ahmed Abdullahi Rofia, the Head of Disaster and Relief for Agwara Local Government, also confirmed the incident, alongside Bello Gidi, media aide to the chairman of Agwara Local Government. Speaking with SaharaReporters, Gidi said: “Yes it’s true that bandits have kidnapped students and teachers at St. Mary’s Papiri Private Catholic Secondary School Papiri, Agwara LGA, Niger State.” He further revealed the scale of the attack, stating: “The information that is reaching us is that they have kidnap over 100 students and teachers. Also the school is a mixed school boys and girls.” Reacting, the Niger State government had blamed the management of St. Mary’s School in Papiri, Agwara Local Government Area for the mass abduction of pupils, accusing the school of violating a security directive issued weeks earlier based on intelligence warnings. In a press release signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Alh. Abubakar Usman, the government said it received news of the kidnapping “with deep sadness.” It added that the “exact number of abducted pupils is yet to be confirmed” as security agencies continue their assessment. According to the statement, the attack occurred despite prior intelligence indicating “an increased threat level in parts of Niger North Senatorial District.” The release said the government acted on the intelligence by issuing “a clear directive suspending all construction activities and ordering the temporary closure of all boarding schools within the affected zone as a precautionary measure.” The government, however, lamented that St. Mary’s School disregarded the instruction. It said, “Regrettably, St. Mary’s School proceeded to reopen and resume academic activities without notifying or seeking clearance from the State Government, thereby exposing pupils and the staff to avoidable risk.” https://saharareporters.com/2025/11/21/christian-association-can-says-215-pupils-12-teachers-abducted-st-mary-school-niger |

Video: Politics not for rascals, Jonathan insists Former President Goodluck Jonathan, yesterday warned that Nigeria’s democracy was being ‘suffocated’ by reckless political behaviour, cautioning that politics should never be reduced to a playground for unruly conduct. This came as President Bola Tinubu said that democracy was standing in Nigeria because of the likes of former President Goodluck Jonathan. ABUJA — Former President Goodluck Jonathan, yesterday warned that Nigeria’s democracy was being ‘suffocated’ by reckless political behaviour, cautioning that politics should never be reduced to a playground for unruly conduct. This came as President Bola Tinubu said that democracy was standing in Nigeria because of the likes of former President Goodluck Jonathan. Jonathan also said no government can succeed without the cooperation of its people, and no people can advance without a government that listens and leads with clarity. He argued that leadership must be anchored on responsibility, nation-building and restraint. He said that sustaining democratic stability requires civility and a genuine sense of accountability from all political actors. Jonathan spoke at the 10th anniversary dinner of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, in Abuja, an event that also doubled as a celebration of his 68th birthday. The gathering brought together an impressive mix of African statesmen, diplomats, political leaders and business figures. “Politics is not for rascals. It is for people who want to build, not destroy,” Jonathan said, warning that the rising tide of aggressive rhetoric and hostile political behaviour was weakening democratic resilience across the continent. He reflected on the experience that inspired the creation of his foundation, noting that its work over the past decade has focused on diplomacy, governance reforms, peacebuilding, medi-ation and the strengthening of democratic institutions. Jonathan also lamented the recent spate of violent attacks and abductions across the country, urging leaders at every level to take their responsibility to citizens more seriously and ensure the protection of lives while safeguarding the nation’s democratic order. Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented President Tinubu, paid glowing tribute to Jonathan. He described Jonathan’s 2015 concession of defeat as the defining moment of his presidency and a decision that saved Nigeria from plunging into crisis. “The highest point of the Jonathan legacy was when he courageously conceded defeat and saved the nation from a precipice,” Shettima said He added that Nigeria’s democracy has endured largely because of leaders like Jonathan, individuals who consistently place national interest above personal ambition. According to him, the statesmanship Jonathan displayed after leaving office has earned him a place among Africa’s most respected democratic figures and positioned the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation as a model for post-office service and peace leadership across the continent. “Our democracy has survived turbulent election seasons because leaders like former President Jonathan understand that the Nigerian state is bigger than any individual,” he added. Shettima conveyed President Tinubu’s goodwill and noted that Jonathan’s conduct since leaving office demonstrates that public service does not end when official duties conclude. Newly elected PDP national chairman and former Minister of Special Duties, Taminu Turaki, also extolled the foundation’s impact. He described it as one of the continent’s most respected institutions in peacebuilding, mediation, conflict resolution and democratic strengthening. “We have watched with keen interest the activities of the foundation from its inception to date. And we’ve seen how this foundation has now grown up to be one of the most respected foundations in Africa,” Turaki said. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2025/11/politics-not-for-rascals-jonathan-insists-2/#google_vignette |

Nigerian Police Retirees Protest At National Assembly, Demand Removal From Contributory Pension Scheme. The retirees said they would continue their demonstrations until lawmakers take concrete steps to address their demands. Nigerian police retirees on Wednesday stormed the National Assembly complex in Abuja, demanding their removal from the Contributory Pension Scheme and urging federal lawmakers to address what they described as years of hardship under the arrangement. The former officers arrived in large numbers at the main entrance of the complex, chanting, singing solidarity songs and displaying placards to draw attention to their plight. Some of the protesters on Wednesday carried placards. One placard read “NASS: Save us and the future of our children. Exit us from CPs.” WATCH: Nigerian Police Retirees Protest At National Assembly, Demand Removal From Contributory Pension Scheme pic.twitter.com/N7EzeOlkFB — Sahara Reporters (@SaharaReporters) November 19, 2025 Another person held a placard that read “We ask for total removal from the police contributory pension.” They further declared, “Today our plan is to shoot down the national assembly as a whole to press down our demand to exempt from Contributory pension.” The retirees said they would continue their demonstrations until lawmakers take concrete steps to address their demands. Wednesday’s demonstration follows earlier protests held this year and led by human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore. On 21 July 2025, Sowore joined retired police officers in Abuja to demand better welfare, including improved pay and their exit from the Contributory Pension Scheme. He also participated in another protest on 30 September 2025, where he criticised the scheme, calling it a “Ponzi scheme” and urging the government to address the concerns of former officers. https://saharareporters.com/2025/11/19/nigerian-police-retirees-protest-national-assembly-demand-removal-contributory-pension
