PoliticsNationwide Blackout Looms As Electricity Workers Down Tools by treesun(op): 4:24pm On Sep 25, 2025
Electricity consumers relying on the national grid may face a prolonged blackout within hours as the National Union of Electricity Employees on Wednesday began a nationwide strike over unresolved labour disputes with the Transmission Company of Nigeria.

The union, in a circular signed by its Acting General Secretary, Dominic Igwebike, directed its members across the country to withdraw their services indefinitely until management addresses long-standing welfare and operational concerns.

According to NUEE, the strike became inevitable after the expiration of an ultimatum issued to TCN, accusing the company of failing to address grievances bordering on poor staff welfare, non-provision of essential tools, and disregard for workers’ rights.

“Unfortunately, the TCN management has decided to handle these issues with kid gloves and with a lack of regard for the hardworking staff of TCN,” the notice read in part.

“We cannot continue to fold our arms while we watch our rights being violated and the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry going down the drain. To this end, the Union is compelled to withdraw its services”, it added.

The union listed its demands to include, “Implementation of the National Minimum Wage, end to casualisation of workers, provision of working tools and materials, payment of staff salaries owed since April 2025.

“Provision of operational vehicles, supply of Personal Protective Equipment, last provided in 2021, resolution of issues arising from the unbundling of TCN and payment of outstanding retirement benefits.”

The directive, which takes immediate effect, mandates “total compliance” from all electricity workers nationwide.

The development raises fears of another wave of power outages across the country.

NUEE had previously shut down operations in June 2024, a move that crippled power supply in many states and forced the Federal Government into emergency negotiations.

Efforts to obtain a reaction from the TCN spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah, proved unsuccessful as she did not respond to calls or messages at the time of filing this report.

The strike comes amid repeated government promises to reform the power sector, which has struggled with low generation, poor infrastructure, and labour unrest despite years of privatisation and interventions.

PoliticsYou Are A One-Term President, ADC Tells Tinubu by treesun(op): 8:07pm On Sep 23, 2025
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has fired back at the Presidency over its recent assertion that President Bola Tinubu has no plans to extend his tenure beyond 2031, describing the remarks as presumptuous and patently undemocratic.

In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC asserts that the President’s mandate ends in 2027, and the party is confident that Nigerians will not wish to extend his tenure by a single day.

Given the spate of banditry and killings raging across the country, the widespread hunger and suffering, the punitive taxes, the flagrant abuse of power at a scale never seen before, the President should be preparing to leave in 2027, any plan to stay in office beyond that date would indeed be a confirmation that this government is incapable of reading the room.

“The presidency’s desperate response to the recent remarks by former governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, that President Bola Tinubu has plans to be a life President only serves to confirm what Nigerians have long suspected: this administration is not only out of touch with reality, it has also become dangerously self-satisfied.”

“That the President is already speaking of remaining in office till 2031 betrays a mindset that dismisses re-election as mere formalities, rather than a constitutional requirement to present his score card to the people. But re-election is not automatic, and President Tinubu has not earned a second term.

“If anything, in two short years, he has shown Nigeria what he is capable of doing. He has divided the country like no other President before him and sent majority of Nigerians deeper into poverty. More innocent lives have been lost under him, and bandits have effectively taken control of a large swathes of our Northern territory. While the President taxes people and businesses to death from Abuja, bandits exert their own taxes in various states of the North.

“Under his watch, national security has degenerated into a cruel joke. Terrorists, bandits, and criminals now operate with total impunity. Citizens are kidnapped in broad daylight. Rural communities have become warzones. Insecurity has metastasized into national trauma, and the government has neither the will nor the capacity to stop it.

“The economy, meanwhile, is in free fall. The naira has collapsed. Inflation is out of control. Food prices have tripled in many parts of the country. Jobs are vanishing. The middle class is disappeaing.

‘Businesses that once thrived are collapsing under the weight of punitive taxes and policy inconsistencies Nigerians are now poorer, hungrier, and angrier than they were before Tinubu took office.”

PoliticsWe’re In Support Of Tinubu’s Borrowing Plan – Speaker Abbas by treesun(op): 8:03am On Sep 23, 2025
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has declared that the Green Chamber is firmly behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s borrowing strategy, describing it as an indispensable tool for Nigeria’s economic growth and poverty reduction.

Speaking in Abuja on Monday at the 8th Annual African Network of Parliamentary Budget Offices (AN-PBO) Conference, Abbas dismissed reports suggesting that the House opposed Tinubu’s borrowing plans, calling them “mischievous and misleading.”

Recently, a speech delivered by the House Leader at the West African Parliamentary Conference (WAPC) was erroneously and mischievously reported out of context, creating the false impression that the House of Representatives does not support the borrowing strategy of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. We wish to state clearly that this interpretation is both inaccurate and misleading.

“The 10th House and indeed the National Assembly have consistently affirmed that, in the face of pressing developmental needs, strategic and responsible borrowing is an essential fiscal tool. Like every modern economy, Nigeria must sometimes leverage credit to finance critical infrastructure, stimulate growth, and protect vulnerable populations. What is important and what the President has assured is that all borrowing remains targeted, transparent, and sustainable, consistent with Nigeria’s Medium-Term Debt Strategy and guided by global best practices,” he said.

The Speaker stressed that the 10th House, and indeed the National Assembly, fully recognises the need for borrowing to fund critical infrastructure, stimulate growth, and protect vulnerable populations.

“Under President Tinubu’s leadership, borrowed funds are being channelled towards transformative projects that will expand revenue-generating capacity, such as power, transport, and agriculture, rather than for consumption. The House stands firmly behind the President’s vision of using judicious borrowing as a catalyst for growth and poverty reduction, while simultaneously strengthening oversight mechanisms.

“In the face of pressing developmental needs, strategic and responsible borrowing is an essential fiscal tool. Like every modern economy, Nigeria must sometimes leverage credit to finance critical infrastructure, stimulate growth, and protect vulnerable populations,” Abbas stated.

He assured Nigerians that President Tinubu’s borrowing is guided by prudence and global best practices, adding that the funds are being targeted at transformative projects.

The Speaker also highlighted the establishment of the National Assembly Budget and Research Office (NABRO) as a major reform to provide independent analysis on borrowing, debt sustainability, and fiscal policy.

He maintained that while borrowing was necessary, plugging leakages through corruption and illicit financial flows was equally critical. According to him, Nigeria loses about $18 billion annually to financial crimes, roughly 3.8% of GDP.

Abbas stressed that responsible borrowing, combined with strict oversight and anti-corruption reforms, would safeguard Nigeria’s economic future.

PoliticsNigerian Government Fails To Supply 45% Of Crude Oil Required By Local Refiners by treesun(op): 7:04am On Sep 23, 2025
This figure, confirmed by the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), highlights ongoing challenges in bridging the crude allocation gap facing indigenous refineries despite Nigeria’s rising production levels.

The Nigerian government has disclosed that a total of 67,657,559 barrels of crude oil were supplied to local refiners for processing between January and August 2025.

This figure, confirmed by the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), highlights ongoing challenges in bridging the crude allocation gap facing indigenous refineries despite Nigeria’s rising production levels.

Speaking in Abuja on Sunday, the Head of Media and Strategic Communications at the NUPRC, Eniola Akinkuotu, said the crude allocation was made in line with the Petroleum Industry Act 2021 and the Domestic Crude Supply Obligation policy.

"A total of 67,657,559 barrels were delivered to local refiners between January and August this year. All refiners got that amount within the eight-month period,” Akinkuotu stated.

In a document seen by SaharaReporters and published by the NUPRC, a total estimate of 123.4 million barrels was projected to be required by local refineries between January and June. The daily requirement was put at 770,500 barrels, while the monthly need was forecast at 23.8 million barrels.

With 67.7 million barrels of crude oil made available to domestic refineries between January and August, it means that over 55.8 million barrels needed for local consumption (using January to June NUPRC domestic needs estimates) were not supplied.

This indicates that the Nigerian government could not provide about 45% of the crude oil required locally.

Previously, SaharaReporters reported that Nigeria’s foreign trade statistics for the first and second quarters of 2025 showed that the country imported fuel worth N4.13 trillion between January and June 2025.

According to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), between January and March (Q1 2025), Nigeria spent N1.76 trillion on the importation of Motor Spirit Ordinary (fuel).

oil

A further review of the recently released Q2 2025 foreign trade statistics shows that fuel importation rose to N2.37 trillion between April and June.

In total, Nigeria spent N4.13 trillion on fuel importation in the first half of 2025.

An earlier review also showed that between October and December 2024 (Q4 2024), the total value of imported refined petroleum stood at N3.303 trillion.

This represented an additional N1.496 trillion spent on refined petroleum imports in Q4 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. The figure was also significantly higher than the amounts recorded in the last quarters of previous years: N1.558 trillion in Q4 2022, N1.443 trillion in Q4 2021, and N574.8 billion in Q4 2019.

PoliticsBenue: APC mobiliser, Ejeh Udeh murdered in front of wife, children (Pix) by treesun(op): 12:08pm On Sep 22, 2025
Tragedy struck in the early hours of Monday when Hon. Ejeh Udeh, a prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Otukpo, Benue State, was brutally gunned down by yet-to-be-identified assailants.

According to eyewitness accounts, the gunmen stormed Udeh’s Ugboju residence at about midnight, riding on a motorcycle.

They were said to have lurked in the shadows, waiting patiently for his return.

The moment he stepped into his compound, the attackers surrounded him and opened fire at close range. The chilling incident unfolded in full view of his wife and children, leaving the family traumatized.

Neighbors reported hearing sporadic gunshots that shattered the silence of the night, causing panic in the community. By the time they rushed out, Udeh was lying in a pool of blood.

He was later confirmed dead and his body has since been deposited at the Otukpo General Hospital morgue.

The killing has thrown the community into mourning, with residents describing the late politician as a grassroots mobilizer and a strong pillar of support for the APC in the area.

Security operatives have yet to issue an official statement on the assassination, but there are growing calls from residents and party members for an urgent investigation to track down those responsible.

The gruesome murder adds to the rising wave of insecurity in Benue State, where recent months have witnessed a series of violent attacks, kidnappings, and political tensions.

As the community grapples with shock, APC stakeholders and supporters are expected to react strongly in the coming days, demanding justice for Hon. Ejeh Udeh.

PoliticsTinubu’s ₦330bn Cash Transfer Story Falls Apart As Testifiers Deny Payments by treesun(op): 8:38am On Sep 21, 2025
Evidence has revealed contradictions, exaggerations and outright falsehoods in the government’s so-called proof after Dada Olusegun, Special Assistant to Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Social Media, shared an infographic on X featuring testimonies from 11 Facebook users who allegedly received ₦25,000 under the Renewed Hope Conditional Cash Transfer Programme.
One of those cited, Uzoma Solar, said that he never received a kobo. “It was just cruise. Someone said the government was paying, so I just said I received it, too. I did not receive a penny,” he admitted.

Others insisted they had been paid but gave accounts that do not align with official procedure.

Sandra Jonah, a graduate of Benue State University, claimed she “registered” individually and her name “came out.” She wrote on Facebook that she received ₦75,000 in three tranches, while others got ₦25,000 once.

Similarly, another Facebook user, Ikemefuna Nwamaka, said she went to her LGA to register and later found money in her account after her friend alerted her.

Both claims run contrary to the National Social Safety-Nets Coordinating Office (NASSCO), which manages the National Social Register (NSR) used to identify beneficiaries.

According to NASSCO, states first select the poorest LGAs using poverty data, after which communities themselves identify the most deprived households.

Data is then collected by trained Community-Based Targeting Teams and processed with an algorithm to determine eligibility. The agency stresses that individuals cannot self-register, nor does it publish any list of beneficiaries.

READ MORE: Festus Ogun Demands Full List of Beneficiaries Amid FG’s ₦330bn Cash Transfer Claim to 8.1m Households

Bola Tinubu’s claim that ₦330 billion was paid to 8.1 million households has therefore come under intense scrutiny. The inconsistencies between official guidelines and the stories of supposed recipients have fueled doubts about the credibility of the programme and the presidency’s narrative.

With one “testifier” admitting to lying outright and others presenting accounts that clash with NASSCO’s documented process, critics say the government’s reliance on unverifiable social media posts as proof of payment undermines its credibility.

Nigerians are now demanding that authorities release a verifiable list of households that actually benefited. Until then, Tinubu’s ₦330bn cash transfer story appears increasingly difficult to defend.

PoliticsMany Soldiers Feared Dead As Boko Haram Overruns Nigerian Army Base In Borno by treesun(op): 7:20pm On Sep 20, 2025
The terrorists invaded the base of 152 TF Battalion in Banki town, Bama Local Government Area of Borno State on Thursday midnight, dislodging the troops.

Ayet-to-be ascertained number of soldiers have been killed after a base of the Nigerian Army in Borno State came under Boko Haram attack, SaharaReporters has gathered.

The terrorists invaded the base of 152 TF Battalion in Banki town, Bama Local Government Area of Borno State on Thursday midnight, dislodging the troops.

152 Battalion is an operational unit of the Nigerian Army, located in Banki and participating in the counter-insurgency Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) in the North Eastern part of Nigeria.

During the attack, the gunmen reportedly burnt armoured tanks, military vehicles and made away unquantifiable ammunition, sources said.

The sources added that surviving soldiers attached to the battalion have fled into Cameroon.

“Yesterday, 152 TF Battalion close to Banki town under Bama LGA was dislodge by Boko Haram terrorists, they were in charge of the base for several hours stealing military equipment and ammunition, as we are talking, casualties still unknown,” a source said.

Another source added, “Yes, 152 Bn was attacked on Thursday. The base is close to Cameroon border, many of our men (soldiers) are still missing.

“However, casualties are still being counted and dozens of vehicles were destroyed in the attack.”

Nigeria has been battling with the insurgents in the North East region for barely two decades now.

The military has repeatedly claimed that the terrorists had been largely defeated and frequently underplays any losses.

The terror group has caused over 100,000 deaths and displaced millions of individuals mainly in Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe states.

Nigerian soldiers have repeatedly complained about their weapons, and have accused their superiors of exposing them to a better armed Boko Haram.

TravelTrump Announces H-1B Visa Fee: Rules, Exemptions, Legal Challenges And All Faqs by treesun(op): 12:34pm On Sep 20, 2025
The Donald Trump-led administration announced on late Friday, i.e., September 19, that American companies seeking to hire foreign workers will now have to pay a USD 100,000 fee to the government to secure the visa for them. A proclamation, titled ‘Restriction on entry of certain nonimmigrant workers’ was signed by the US President.
It said that while the H1B visa programme was brought into effect to invite temporary workers into the United States to "perform additive, high-skilled functions", it has been deliberately "exploited to replace, rather than supplement, American workers with lower-paid, lower-skilled labor". As Trump's order came into the spotlight, several tech firms in the US sent caution notices to their employees, advising them to stay in America.
In a note accessed by Reuters, Amazon, a tech giant and a top beneficiary of H-1B visas, said, "If you have H-1B status and are in the US, stay in the country for now.” Microsoft sent a similar notice to its employees, urging them to stay in the United States for the foreseeable future. "Either the person is very valuable to the company and America, or they’re going to depart, and the company is going to hire an American", said the US Commerce Secretary.
Here are some FAQs related to H-1B visas:

The H-1B visa is a non-immigrant visa that allows companies to hire high-skilled labour from foreign countries. 2. What does the new order say? To hire new foreign workers, US employers will have to pay an annual fee of USD 100,000 to the government for a visa petition, starting tomorrow, i.e., September 21, 2025. 3. What about the existing H-1B visa holders? According to a report by The New York Times, the rule is applicable to the new H-1B visa holders only. While the existing visa holders do not need to pay the fees, they need to return to America by September 21, in case they have been away for a period of 12 months. 4. What about the visa holders who are away from the US? If a foreign worker holding an H-1B visa is currently outside the United States and doesn't return before September 21, 2025, it will be in the hands of the Secretary of Homeland Security to decide if they need to pay the fees or not. 5. Can Trump's order be challenged legally? Trump's decision to impose an annual fee for H1B visa petitions is expected to face legal challenges. Doug Rand, a former senior official at US Citizenship and Immigration Services under President Joe Biden, questioned the legality of the policy. "Tying an entry ban to a fee, let alone a $100,000 fee, isn’t likely to survive five seconds in court", as quoted by New York Times.

PoliticsLagos Police Arrest NURTW Chieftain ‘shamelon’ For Brutal Assault On Dispatch Ri by treesun(op): 10:06am On Sep 19, 2025
Although several unconfirmed reports suggest that the dispatch rider had died from injuries inflicted on him, police spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi said she had yet to confirm it.

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested Shamsideen Adio, a top official of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), who had beaten a dispatch rider to a pulp.

Although several unconfirmed reports suggest that the dispatch rider had died from injuries inflicted on him, police spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi said she had yet to confirm it.

"I have been receiving calls saying that the guy is dead, but at the moment, I am trying to make some calls to confirm if the information is true or not,” she said.

"As of yesterday, the guy was still alive. Let me confirm, and I will get back to you. We are also working on releasing a statement on the matter. The man has been arrested and is in custody. The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for thorough investigation and prosecution."

SaharaReporters reported on Thursday, a disturbing video showing Adio, popularly known as Shamelon, beating a dispatch rider to a pulp.

The incident occurred on Tapa Street, Lagos Island, on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, and, according to eyewitnesses, began when Adio’s vehicle was allegedly blocked by the rider.

The situation quickly escalated, with Adio joined by friends and colleagues, who reportedly battered the rider mercilessly.

A video clip shared on Facebook by Chris Nwandu revealed the brutal assault, sparking widespread outrage.

In the video seen by SaharaReporters, Adio was seen punching the poor rider repeatedly alongside his friend, while a crowd of onlookers watched without intervening. At one point, Adio and his friends wrestled the rider to the ground, removing everything from his pockets and attempting to strip him naked.

SaharaReporters gathered that this incident is not Adio's first alleged offence. Sources close to the matter revealed that he has a history of violence against riders, particularly those operating commercial tricycles, popularly known as Keke Marwa.

It's reported that just a few days before Wednesday's incident, Adio punched another rider, leaving him hospitalised.

Nwandu wrote, "We are reliably informed that he's notorious for beating Marwa operators to a pulp whenever they offend him...It was reported that few days ago he also dealt deadly blows to a Marwa operator who ended up in the general hospital."

Nwandu is demanding justice for the victim.

"It's a cry for justice!!!! As we don't know who his next victim will be, the state authorities should immediately look into this case," Nwandu said.

The incident has raised concerns about the safety and well-being of riders in Lagos, highlighting the need for accountability and protection.

Dispatch riders play a vital role in Lagos' logistics and transportation ecosystem, navigating the city's notorious traffic to deliver goods and services. However, their work often puts them at risk of accidents, harassment, and violence.

CrimeFBI Arrests UK-Based Nigerian Fraudster, Ajibola Oduntan Over Ticket Scam by treesun(op): 12:15pm On Sep 18, 2025
FBI nabs UK-based Nigerian fraudster Ajibola Oduntan over multimillion-naira ‘Wicked’ Broadway show ticket scam

The FBI has taken Ajibola Oduntan into custody after special agents identified his role in a ticketing scam that resulted in a loss of over $100,000 in ticket sales for the Broadway musical Wicked, between September 2023 and October 2023, for the Kentucky Performing Arts.

Mr Oduntan, 47, who also holds an Irish passport, was facing charges of wire fraud and wire fraud conspiracy in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Kentucky, in Louisville, after allegedly stealing the credit card information of many U.S. citizens to purchase at least 61 Wicked show tickets from KPA.

The UK-based suspect then resold the tickets to unsuspecting Broadway enthusiasts on StubHub, a top U.S. website for live event ticket resellers and buyers.

After a chunk of credit card companies discovered the fraud, they instituted chargebacks for their customers from KPA, resulting in a loss of at least $100,000, given that the money was only deducted after the performances.

KPA reported the incident to the FBI, submitting relevant payment information, including the names, emails, and IP addresses of the credit card holders used.

Despite using VPNs to obfuscate the scam, the FBI followed the money trail and found that the proceeds from ticket resale were deposited into PayPal accounts and subsequently transferred to personal accounts linked to Mr Oduntan.

FBI special agent Daniel W. Heath established numerous transactions between three StubHub accounts and linked PayPal accounts with multiple emails in a manner reminiscent of wire fraud.

Mr Heath found at least four emails attached to a PayPal account ,52254838476591*, which belonged to Mr Oduntan. They are fenandexadex@gmail.com, romanslady001@gmail.com, romanslady00@gmail.com, and samesonbar@gmail.com.

Before the Wicked show run in September, agents discovered transactions worth $350,000 wired from StubHub into PayPal accounts controlled by a Nigerian and a UK citizen. The funds were then transferred to Mr Oduntan’s Revolut account and Allied Irish Bank account in Ireland.

“PayPal records obtained under valid legal process showed that ODUNTAN deposited nearly $350,000 into PayPal from StubHub between January 2023 and July 2024,” stated court filings on August 7.

When Mr Oduntan submitted a U.S. visa application, his phone number matched the same phone number used for the fraudulent ticketing transactions in one of the emails registered to his PayPal account.

The FBI, which typically screens all U.S. visa applications for criminal records, applied to Magistrate Judge Regina S. Edward for an arrest warrant to apprehend Mr Oduntan on U.S. soil.

His warrant was granted and sealed until he landed in the U.S. in late August. Law enforcement agents swiftly arrested him and are currently holding him at the Grayson County Detention Centre after he pleaded not guilty to wire fraud and wire fraud conspiracy.

He was charged by a grand jury on September 3, but his trial is scheduled to begin on November 10.

PoliticsAjaokuta Steel Company Will Never Work – Dangote by treesun(op): 11:10am On Sep 17, 2025
He likened attempting to revive the steel company to comparing outdated technology with modern advancements.
Aliko Dangote, founder and president/chief executive of the Dangote Group, says he believes that the Ajaokuta steel company will never work.

Mr Dangote, in a video shared on the TVC X handle on Tuesday, emphasised the importance of a thriving steel industry for national development but believes Ajaokuta’s challenges make its success unlikely.

He likened attempting to revive the steel company to comparing outdated technology with modern advancements.

“There is no nation that you can build without a steel industry and honestly within us here, Ajaokuta will not work. We can keep deceiving ourselves and keep being passionate about it, but it’s not possible.

“It like you now, if you remember those vehicles we used to produce from Volkswagen (Igala) if you bring Igala now, would you now compare it to the current Kia. No, things have changed,” Mr Dangote said.

He emphasised the need for adaptation in a rapidly evolving world.

“Things have changed and all of us have to keep changing or you will become archaic. You have to change, now, when you carry something like Ajaokuta is like you going to the grave yard to bring a dead person or you go to the hospital to bring somebody who is on the dying bed to come and run 100 metres. It’s totally impossible,” he added.

Ajaokuta Steel’s chequered history
The steel company, located in Ajaokuta, Kogi State, was built between 1979 and the mid-1990s. It was not completed and has never operated optimally. It has been moribund for over two decades despite the efforts of different governments.

In September 2022, the Nigerian government agreed to pay $496 million to settle an Indian firm’s claim over the facility. The dispute followed the federal government’s revocation in 2008 of an agreement that handed control of the steelworks and the National Iron Ore Mining Company to the Indian firm.

In cancelling the deal, the Umar Yar’adua administration said the terms of the concession at the time were not favourable to the country.

In December 2022, the government said 11 companies had indicated interest in taking over the steel company on a concession basis. Three of the 11 bidders were Russian companies, the then Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Olamilekan Adegbite, said while listing his ministry’s achievements.

Upon assuming office in August 2023, the Minister of Steel Development, Shuaibu Audu, promised to revive the steel company. At the time, he added that he would set a roadmap for the development of the steel sector, aggressively pursue the completion of Ajaokuta Steel company, and enact the required bills to regulate the sector.

In September last year, the Nigerian government signed an agreement with a Russian Consortium Company for the rehabilitation, completion and operation of the Ajaokuta Steel Plant and National Iron Ore Mining Company in Kogi State.

TravelMotorists, Residents Lament As Flood Submerges Lagos Roads by treesun(op): 7:13am On Sep 17, 2025
Some parts of Lagos State, on Tuesday morning, were once again submerged by heavy flooding following a downpour that started in the early hours of the day.

The incident occurred weeks after rainfall wreaked havoc in the state.

PUNCH Metro reported that property worth millions of naira were destroyed in the Ikorodu area, which was mostly affected.

The experience on Tuesday was not far from different as major roads and some neighbourhoods in the state were overtaken by floodwaters.

From Ago Palace Way, Okota, to Ikorodu, Akowonjo, and Lekki, residents lamented how their homes and shops had been flooded, leaving them stranded.

In a viral video sighted by PUNCH Metro on Tuesday, Alhaji Idowu Street in the Akowonjo area was filled with water.

“This is just three hours of rain, and everywhere is flooded. When it is not as if the people living here are not humans. This is just too bad,” a resident in the area lamented.

It was a similar sight in the Okota area of the state as vehicles were seen moving at a slow pace on both sides of the already flooded Ago Palace Way.

In a video sent to our correspondent by a resident of Osapa London in the Lekki area, the roads linking estates in the neighbourhood were also flooded at different points.

The resident, identified simply as Mustapha, said, “When the rain started this morning, I knew there was no going out for me today. I have been indoors all day. There were some points in the flood where the water would almost flow into your vehicle, and I couldn’t take that risk. I took it before, but not again. Even Uber drivers don’t want to come to this side of our place because of the damage the flood does to their vehicles.”

Motorists and pedestrians were also trapped in the gridlock that built up on several flooded highways. In some areas, vehicles broke down on the waterlogged roads, worsening the situation for commuters rushing to work.

Sharing her experience, a pedestrian, Mojisola Ajisafe, lamented how the flood on the road linking Agege to Ogba and Wempco Road affected vehicular movement along the area.

According to her, vehicles were at a point forced to a halt when the road became almost impassable due to the flood.

“The T-junction by the Mobil filling station was heavily flooded as some vehicles did not move at all. They had to wait for some time for the water to reduce, except for some SUVs and commercial buses. This caused a lot of traffic and even made the resume late to the office.”

It was another nightmare for Ikorodu residents as another resident sent a video to PUNCH Metro, which showed some flooded areas in the community.

Commercial drivers plying the Egbeda-Idimu area also lamented as flood took over some parts of the road. They also called for the intervention of the state government.

One of them, who identified himself simply as Saheed, told PUNCH Metro, “This is not the first time we are complaining about flooding in this area. It is already getting out of hand. The government needs to find a permanent solution to it.”

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunboh Wahab, said on August 4 via his X handle that the state government had resilient systems in place to manage flash floods, but the sheer volume of rainfall may temporarily overwhelm some drainage channels.

As a coastal city, Lagos is naturally vulnerable to tidal lock-up when rising water levels in the lagoon slow down the discharge of runoff. This is further worsened by climate change. We are closely monitoring areas near rivers and lagoons, which are at higher risk of flash floods with strong currents,” he added.

The spokesperson for the ministry, Adekunle Adeshina, did not respond to calls made to his telephone line on Tuesday. A text message sent to him had yet to be responded to as of the time this report was filed.

PoliticsAmidst Peace Deal In Katsina: Bandits Abduct 55 In Zamfara by treesun(op): 7:18am On Sep 16, 2025
Bandits yesterday abducted 43 worshippers from a mosque in Gidan Turbe village, Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

They were also said to have kidnapped 12 persons at Godai village, Bukkuyum Local Government Area of the state, on Sunday.

Both incidents occurred at a time community leaders and some armed groups in neighbouring Katsina State had entered into a peace deal.

Security experts said that to effectively address insecurity, state governments in the North West must collaborate against bandits in the zone.

The Zamfara mosque attack, Daily Trust gathered, occurred around 5.30am during prayer. The gunmen were said to have surrounded the mosque and whisked away 43 worshippers towards Gahori Mountain.

Gahori Mountain, in Tsafe Local Government Area, is situated in a thick forest that spreads from Zamfara through parts of Kebbi State and down to Birnin Gwari in Kaduna State.

The forest is said to be an enclave of different bandits’ groups operating across Zamfara and parts of Sokoto and Kebbi states.

Locals alleged that almost all the famous bandit leaders, including Bello Turji, Ado Aliero, Dogo Gide, Dan Isuhu and Black, among others, have their enclaves around Gahori Mountain.

Residents, who spoke to Daily Trust yesterday, said the attack on the mosque had left several communities in Tsafe and environs in confusion and despair.

A resident of Gidan Turbe, Habibu Dogo, said: “The bandits silently surrounded the mosques and patiently waited for the worshippers to finish prayers. Shortly after they finished, the bandits gathered all of them outside and later moved them out of the village.

“It appears the bandits kept their motorcycles afar because nobody in the village noticed their movements. After they abducted the worshippers, they moved them towards Gahori Mountain.

Auwal Isa, a resident of Tsafe, said the community and its environs had been witnessing renewed banditry attacks in recent days.

He said, “From Kucheri-Tsafe, a distance of about 10 kilometres has become a death trap due to persistent banditry activities.

“Several communities within this parameter have remained under constant attacks by the bandits in recent days. Hardly a day passes without a community or two being attacked.

“Residents of some communities around the Gahori Mountain have deserted their homes for fear of being attacked. Right now, even the communities that had agreements with bandits are not being spared.

“The bandits will enter an agreement with a village and collect their money, but later attack them on the slightest provocation. This is the problem we are facing in this part of Zamfara State.”

One of the community leaders, who preferred not to be named, told one of our correspondents that the attack was carried out by bandits loyal to Adamu Aliero.

He alleged that the abduction was a consequence of Zamfara State’s refusal to enter into a peace accord with the armed groups.

“This is their usual pattern. Whenever they reach a peace deal with one community, they simply shift their attacks to neighbouring areas.

“The same thing happened before. When there was a peace agreement in Zamfara, the bandits moved their operations to Katsina.

“After the latest peace deal was brokered last Saturday in Katsina, I knew we would be their next target—because Katsina is our immediate neighbour,” the leader added.

We’re in distress – Residents

Muhammad Tukur Isa, a resident of Kaura Namoda, alleged that both the federal and the state governments were not sincere about fighting banditry.

The scene of bandits attack on Keta community in Tsafe LGA of Zamfara State (File photo)
“We are tired of the game the two governments are playing. All we want is peace. We want to return to our farms and markets and live a normal life. We have been attacked several times, and the bandits have looted all our belongings.

For years, they have tormented us, and despite our repeated calls to the authorities, no real effort has been made to save our lives. What we saw during the just-concluded bye-election is enough to show that the government is not doing enough in the fight against banditry.

“If the government can deploy adequate personnel and weapons to secure elections in this community, why can’t it provide the same protection for our lives? Sincerely, the election exposed the government’s lapses,”
he said.

Another resident, Alhaji Bello Yusuf Tsafe, urged urging the Minister of State for Defence and Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal to work together to tackle the insecurity in the state.

“They need each other, and until they put their heads together, Zamfara people will continue to suffer in the hands of bandits.

“We are praying that one day, these two gentlemen will sit under one roof and strategise on how to end banditry in the state. As the security situation deteriorates, they must put their grievances aside and salvage Zamfara,”
he said.

The Sunday’s attack on Godai village in Bukkuyum LGA was said to occur around 3.40am when sporadic shootings by bandits forced residents to flee.

A security expert, Zagazola Makama, on his social media handles, said 12 persons were abducted in the process.

He quoted the Zamfara State Police Command as confirming receiving a distress call from the Divisional Police officer in the area and deploying officers there.

Governor Dauda Lawal had restated his administration’s firm stance against negotiating with bandits.

He had reiterated this during his recent condolence visit to Kagara, Dan Isa and Kasuwar Daji — three communities in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area hit by banditry in August.

In a statement by his spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, Governor Lawal said the visits were part of his administration’s commitment to prioritising security and standing with victims of violent attacks.

“Since assuming office, I have made it clear: we will not negotiate with those who murder innocent citizens. That position has not changed. These groups have never shown sincerity, and we will not legitimise their actions by engaging them,” he said.

Zamfara asks FG to deploy soldiers

The Special Assistant to Governor Dauda Lawal on Broadcast Media, Alhaji Mustapha Jafaru Kaura, asked the federal government to deploy soldiers in the state like it did during the recent by-elections in the state.

“We have security personnel on the ground, but they cannot engage the bandits until they receive orders from Abuja. While they wait for orders, the bandits are busy killing innocent people, including the security personnel themselves,” Kaura said.

He alleged that Zamfara residents were being attacked daily while troops remained idle due to a lack of directives.

“The same federal government that could not give our soldiers orders to confront bandits deployed three battalions—about 3,000 soldiers—to Kaura Namoda during the recent by-election. They came with heavy weapons, gun tractors, Armoured Personnel Carriers, an Assistant Inspector-General of Police and four Commissioners of Police to protect votes in just six wards,” he said.

“If not politicisation, what stops the federal government from deploying the same resources to fight banditry? Even if they claim Zamfara is under opposition, why are banditry attacks still raging in APC-controlled states like Sokoto, Katsina, Kebbi, and Kaduna?” he asked.

PoliticsNigeria’s Crude Oil Exports Drop By N3.18 Trillion In Six Months by treesun(op): 6:00pm On Sep 15, 2025
Nigeria’s crude oil exports plunged by N3.18 trillion in the first half of 2025, underlining the country’s continued struggles with output levels and global market shifts.

Data from the foreign trade statistics report by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) show crude oil exports fell to N24.92 trillion in H1 2025, compared to N28.10 trillion in the same period of 2024 and 11.3% decline in value.

Further analysis showed that in Q1 2025, crude oil exports were valued at N12.96 trillion, but this dropped further to N11.97 trillion in Q2. Crude’s share of total exports slid to 52.6% in Q2 2025, down sharply from 71.2% in Q2 2024. This marks a significant erosion of oil’s dominance in Nigeria’s external trade.

Nigeria’s trade surplus soars 44% in Q2 2025 as non-oil exports surge
September 13, 2025

As crude still the main source of government revenue, the decline poses fiscal risks even as total exports grow.

Non-crude exports on the rise
While crude exports weakened, non-crude categories surged. Non-crude exports more than doubled year-on-year, rising from N8.79 trillion in H1 2024 to N18.43 trillion in H1 2025.

News continues after this ad

Within this, non-oil exports — such as agricultural goods and solid minerals — held steady at just above N3 trillion across both quarters of 2025.

The biggest gains came from refined petroleum products and semi-processed goods, which helped push the share of non-crude exports to 41% of total exports in H1 2025, compared to 24% a year earlier.

Trade surplus strengthens despite oil export decline
Despite the N3.18 trillion fall in crude exports, Nigeria posted a stronger trade surplus in H1 2025. Total exports stood at N43.35 trillion, while imports were N30.71 trillion, leaving a surplus of N12.64 trillion — a 54.6% jump from the N8.17 trillion recorded in H1 2024.

Exports as a share of total trade rose from 55.9% in Q2 2024 to 59.8% in Q2 2025, highlighting how buoyant non-crude exports offset the oil slump. Imports, meanwhile, dipped slightly by 0.9% in Q2, after a 7% decline in Q1, further supporting the trade balance.

What you should know
Nairametrics earlier reported that Nigeria spent a total of N4 trillion on fuel imports in the first six months of 2025.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) figures, the country spent N2.3 trillion on fuel imports in Q2 2025, following N1.76 trillion recorded in Q1. This brings the half-year total to N4 trillion.
For perspective, in the whole of 2024, Nigeria reported N15.4 trillion in fuel import bills, a figure that strained foreign reserves and contributed significantly to naira volatility.
Also, Nigeria recorded an upswing in its external trade position in the second quarter of 2025, as the country’s trade surplus widened by 44.3% to N7.46 trillion, up from N5.17 trillion in the previous quarter.
Nigeria’s total exports stood at N22.75 trillion in Q2, a 10.5% increase from Q1 and 28.4% higher than the same period in 2024. Imports, by contrast, slipped marginally by 0.9% quarter-on-quarter to N15.29 trillion. This dynamic created the wider surplus that has boosted Nigeria’s external account.

PoliticsTinubu’s Presidential Dissociative Disorder - Farooq Kperogi by treesun(op): 7:20am On Sep 13, 2025
There have been at least two prominent instances when President Bola Ahmed Tinubu betrayed what I have called presidential dissociative disorder, which I define as power-induced divorce from everyday reality evinced by presidents who are ensconced in a bubble, who are sheltered from the real truth, and who are nourished with a steady staple of comforting falsehoods by obsequious aides.

During bilateral talks in Brazil on August 26, 2025, Tinubu boasted that his two-year presidency has stamped out corruption from Nigeria. “It’s getting clearer to the people,” he said. “We have more money for the economy, and no more corruption.”

Again, on September 3, 2025, he claimed that when he became president in May 2023, the naira was trading at ₦1,900 to the dollar, and that his administration has since stabilized it at around ₦1,450. “The economy has stabilized,” he said. “Nobody is trading a piece of paper for an exchange rate anymore. When I took over, it was ₦1,900 to a dollar, it’s ₦1,450 now.”

These wildly inaccurate claims have been fact-checked by multiple news outlets and found to be emphatically false. But these self-serving presidential mendacities are too nakedly transparent to even warrant fact-checking. You only need to be alive, well, and with a halfway functioning brain between May 2023 and now to know the truth.

Because of my long-term interest in the psychology of power, I am less concerned with the facticity of the president’s claims than the motive force behind them. My widely shared July 27, 2019, column titled “How Political Power Damages the Brain—and How to Reverse it” talks about how the intoxication of power, and the literal brain damage it causes, can deaden the moral sensibilities of, weaken the faculty for empathy in, and activate dissociation from reality by people who wield it.

I extended this insight into former President Muhammadu Buhari’s tendency to inhabit a universe that was completely disconnected from everyday Nigeria. In his parallel universe, I observed, he had transformed Nigeria into a Nirvana where there was a superfluity of the best imaginable nourishment for everyone and where life was pleasant, pleasurable, and perfect.

Recall that in the aftermath of a horrendously bloodstained communal upheaval in Taraba in March 2018, which compelled him to pay a forced sympathy visit to affected communities, Buhari told grieving communities that he had fulfilled his campaign promise to secure the nation. “Today, even our worst enemy can attest to the fact that the APC-led federal government has done well in the area of security,” he said. “We have decimated Boko Haram, while the fight against corruption is going on well.” If the government had “done well in the area of security,” why was he on a tour of scenes of bloodletting?

I called his condition presidential dissociative disorder. Tinubu is suffering from the same disorder. That’s the context of his claims to have eliminated corruption and improved the worth of the naira, even though the exact opposite is actually the truth.

Just like Tinubu said there was “no more corruption” in Nigeria and that the economy had “stabilized,” Buhari also boasted during a speech at the inauguration of his ministers on August 19, 2019, that he had "secured" the country, "improved the economy" and "fought corruption" to a standstill, adding “none but the most partisan will dispute that we have made headway in all three areas.”

Only power-drunk, brain-damaged people who are unmoored from reality and dissociated from the real world would even joke (let alone assert with a straight face) that Nigeria’s economy has improved or stabilized, and that corruption is being fought or has ceased to exist.

That’s why I think both Buhari and Tinubu are victims of presidential dissociative disorder (PDD). It’s a condition that causes presidents to take rent-free residence in cloud-cuckoo-land and that uncouples them from the experiential realities of real living people.

But I am concerned only with Tinubu in today’s column. There’s no doubt that Tinubu’s thoughts and actions and the reality in the country have parted company. What is sadder still is that his dissociative disorder is infectious. All his aides have caught it. In their world, everything is perfect. Only “haters” think otherwise. That’s why the entire country is caught in a state of suspended animation.

As I pointed out in the July 2019 column, researchers in the psychology of power have found out that excessive praise from subordinates, sycophantic drooling from people seeking favors, control over vast resources they once didn’t have, and all of the staid rituals and performances of power conspire to cause “functional” changes to the brains of people in power.

On a social level, it also creates what Lord David Owen, a British neurologist-turned-politician, called the “hubris syndrome” in his 2008 book titled In Sickness and in Power.

Some features of hubris syndrome, Owen points out, are, “manifest contempt for others, loss of contact with reality, restless or reckless actions, and displays of incompetence.” Sounds familiar?

But this power-induced dissociative disorder isn’t inevitable, as I pointed out. If Tinubu and the people who can persuade him are interested in coupling him back to reality, they might find these paragraphs I wrote from the 2019 column:

“Powerful people can, and indeed do, extricate themselves from the psychological snares of power if they so desire. Professor Keltner said one of the most effective psychological strategies for people in power to reconnect with reality and reverse the brain damage of power is to periodically remember moments of powerlessness in their lives—such as when they were victims of natural disasters, accidents, poverty, etc.

“They should also have what American journalist Louis McHenry Howe once called a “toe holder,” that is, someone who doesn’t fear them, expects no favors from them, and can tell them uncomfortable truths without fear of consequences.

“Winston Churchill’s toe holder was his wife, who once wrote a letter to him that read, in part, ‘I must confess that I have noticed a deterioration in your manner; & you are not as kind as you used to be.’….

“Another potent way to reverse power-induced brain damage is to periodically get out of the protected silos of power and solitarily observe the quotidian interactions of everyday folks—their humor, laughter, fights, etc. — without the familiar add-ons of power, such as aides, cameras, security, etc. This helps to stimulate the experiences of others and restore empathy.

“This is particularly important in Nigeria because power, at all levels, is almost absolute and unaccountable.”

Tinubu still has time, if he so chooses, to inoculate himself against the worst ravages of presidential dissociative disorder by embracing humility, surrounding himself with truth-tellers instead of flatterers, and venturing beyond the suffocating cocoon of sycophancy that now imprisons him.

But if he continues to luxuriate in his own delusions and to mistake fantasy for fact, he will not only deepen his personal divorce from reality but also drag the entire country deeper into the perilous fog of collective hallucination. And history, which has a long memory, will not be as forgiving as his aides.

PoliticsPorous Borders, Insufficient Patrols: Police Can’t End VIP Protection – IGP by treesun(op): 10:03pm On Sep 11, 2025
Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has said the Nigeria Police Force cannot completely stop the deployment of officers to protect Very Important Personalities (VIPs) and private individuals, stressing that some categories of people must be secured.

We cannot do away entirely with protecting our VIPs. These are employers of labour, owners of industries who pay thousands of workers, and top government functionaries. The ones we are withdrawing officers from are those who used deception to get our men,” he said.

Egbetokun stated this in Abuja on Thursday during a meeting with Border Patrol Squadron Commanders, where he admitted that the force’s manpower is overstretched as many officers are attached to VIPs instead of border security.

Highlighting Nigeria’s “vast and complex” borders spanning over 4,000km of land boundaries and long maritime corridors, the IGP warned that porous borders have fueled the inflow of arms, contraband, human trafficking, and infiltration by terrorists.

He urged border commanders to see themselves as “guardians of Nigeria’s doors,” stressing:

A house without a door is a shelter for strangers. Our borders are Nigeria’s doors. If they are weak, every danger walks in freely. If they are strong, our children can sleep soundly.”

Citing the 2024 interception of a container from Turkey carrying over 800 rifles and 100,000 rounds of ammunition, he said intelligence and collaboration remain vital in border policing.

Egbetokun emphasized the need for synergy with Customs, Immigration, Armed Forces, and other security agencies, adding that criminals now use sophisticated tools like drones, forged documents, and encrypted networks.

“We cannot fight 21st-century crime with 20th-century tools. Technology—surveillance systems, drones, biometric scanners, and data analysis—are necessities, not luxuries,” he said.

The IGP also pledged improved welfare for officers, promising better tools, mobility, housing, and insurance. “We cannot ask you to give your best if your welfare is neglected. As long as I lead, I will continue to fight for your welfare,” he assured.

PoliticsGrid Collapse: Nigerians Pay For Darkness While Cabals Loot — NLC Blasts by treesun(op): 10:40pm On Sep 10, 2025
Abuja — The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has blasted the Federal Government over Tuesday’s total collapse of the national electricity grid, accusing it of deliberately engineering the power sector to fail while Nigerians are forced to pay exorbitant tariffs for darkness.
In a statement signed by NLC President Joe Ajaero, the congress said it observed “with utter disgust—though not with surprise — the total collapse of the national electricity grid today.”

The statement continued, “This recurrent catastrophe is not an accident; it is the direct and inevitable result of a capitalist ruling class that has deliberately engineered the power sector to fail, to loot, and to keep the Nigerian people in a state of perpetual underdevelopment and exploitation. It is part of the consequences of refusing to listen to citizens and civic actors, while kowtowing to the peddlers of neoliberal policies.
“This latest collapse is a stark indictment of this administration and the entire neoliberal, pro-market charade that has defined the power sector since its so-called privatization. The government, hiding behind compromised agencies, has once again demonstrated that it has neither the political will nor the ideological clarity to deliver stable electricity to the masses.
“We state categorically that the problem is not a technical one; it is a problem of predatory power sector governance and a kwashiorkor economic model.
“The sector is crippled because it is run by a cabal of the wrong individuals—unqualified political cronies and economic buccaneers who see our national infrastructure not as a tool for development, but as a trough from which to siphon public wealth.
“How else does one explain the scandalous appointment of a former local government chairman, with no known expertise in energy economics or engineering, to the pivotal position of Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC)? This is not an appointment based on competence; it is a political settlement, a reward for loyalty in a system that thrives on patronage at the expense of merit.
“It is an insult to the intelligence of every Nigerian and a clear signal that the regulatory body is designed to be a toothless bulldog—a mere rubber stamp for the profiteering of the DisCos and GenCos.
“The NLC has been made aware of a proposed N4 trillion government payment to these same failed operators. We reject this outright! To sink another kobo of public money into the pockets of these private entities is an act of economic betrayal against the Nigerian people.

“This colossal sum is not meant to ‘fix’ anything; it is a grand scheme to indemnify failure. That N4 trillion is more than enough to begin a radical, state-driven process of building a new, democratically controlled power sector from the ground up—a sector owned by the people and run for the people.
“We are trapped in a vicious cycle where a comprador bourgeoisie, in cahoots with their international finance capital allies, has structured the economy to serve foreign interests and a tiny local elite.
“The continued collapse of the grid is a direct attack on our national productivity. It kills small businesses, stifles industrialization, creates mass unemployment, and inflicts untold hardship on millions of households forced to pay exorbitant tariffs for darkness.
“The NLC therefore suggests that if the government is truly interested in fixing the power sector, it must first address the nature, character, and capacity of its appointees. Appointing the right individual to head NERC and replacing all key leadership in the sector with proven, experienced, and patriotic technocrats—not political jobbers—would be key to reviving it.
“Since government claims to have N4 trillion to invest in the sector, we demand that these funds be redirected towards a public-led initiative to build new generation capacity and revitalize transmission infrastructure, rather than handing them over to the DisCos and GenCos.
“Once again, we call for a comprehensive public audit of the entire power sector since the failed privatization, and for a fundamental review of the privatization model itself with a view to reviving this critical sector. This has become an urgent imperative.
“The working class and the suffering masses of Nigeria will no longer tolerate this darkness. We will no longer accept excuses for a crisis that is manifestly man-made. The fact that government continues on this path of deliberate failure demonstrates its lack of seriousness in fixing the sector.
“This is not a plea; it is a declaration of intent. The light must come on, by any means necessary.”

PoliticsGunmen Kill Three Police Officers During Attack On Kogi Checkpoint by treesun(op): 12:41pm On Sep 10, 2025
Three police officers were killed on Wednesday morning after gunmen launched an attack on a security checkpoint in Egbe, Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State.

According to local sources, the incident occurred in the border town, which shares a boundary with Kwara State. The gunmen reportedly stormed the checkpoint, engaging the police officers in a fierce gun battle.

The assailants came for their guns, which they carted away. Three police officers died in the gun battle,” a source at the scene told SaharaReporters.

Videos obtained by SaharaReporters show vehicles allegedly used by the attackers as they fled the area after the assault.

Earlier on Wednesday, SaharaReporters reported that bandits launched a deadly overnight attack on a settlement in Bokungi, Tsaragi community, Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State, killing one person and rustling several cows.

SaharaReporters gathered that the incident occurred around midnight and into Wednesday morning, leaving residents in shock and fear.

Sources told SaharaReporters that the assailants stormed the community at about 12 a.m., shooting sporadically to scare residents before carting away dozens of cattle.

One of the sources explained that the attackers targeted the Fulani settlement belonging to Alhaji Garuba and Alhaji Mumini, where Mumini’s first son was reportedly killed during the raid.

The source said Alhaji Mumini’s son, Muhammadu, who got married a month ago, was killed.

Meanwhile, when the bandits were unable to force open Alhaji Garuba’s door, they went straight to rustle all his cows.

The source told SaharaReporters that the bandits came through Bokungi and moved straight to the settlement.

The source noted that the bandits started firing into the air, and everyone began running for safety. They took away many cows, leaving destruction behind.

"They came around 12 a.m. when the kidnappers entered through Bokungi and moved nearly 700 Fulani cows, shooting as they went. They passed through Fengewa before vigilantes and Nigerian soldiers attempted to intercept them, but as of now I don’t know if the soldiers and vigilantes succeeded,” the source said.

"Alhaji Garuba and Alhaji Mumini were affected, with Alhaji Mumini’s first son killed by them. The stolen cows are estimated to be nearly 1000. People are asking why the Nigerian Army made no real effort."

Residents further explained that as the attackers advanced through Fengewa, the gunshots alerted local vigilante groups and security operatives, who mobilised quickly to confront them.

PoliticsLagos: Enforce Okada Ban Statewide - Punch Editorial by treesun(op): 7:47am On Sep 10, 2025
FOR years, the Lagos State Government has engaged in a running battle with operators of commercial motorcycles known as okada over persistent disregard for road safety rules and route restrictions. Despite regular raids and seizures of the bikes for route violations, the okada riders remain defiant. This must stop.

In August, the task force team seized 668 bikes and arrested seven suspects during a routine week-long enforcement for compliance operations led by its chairman, Adetayo Akerele.

The operation targeted Ishaga, Balogun Bus Stop on Iju-Ishaga Road, Ijegun Roundabout, Iyana-Iba, Iyana-Ishasi, Igbo-Elerin, and Iyana-School.

The team also raided Volkswagen Bus Stop on the stretch of Lagos-Badagry Expressway, Kola Bus Stop on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, and other restricted routes.

According to Akerele, these areas had been flagged following numerous complaints and distress calls indicating the persistent use of commercial motorcycles by suspected criminals to attack innocent people, tricycle operators, and their passengers, robbing them of valuables, particularly at night.

Apart from robberies, okada riders are notorious for disregarding traffic rules, often riding against traffic even on highways and ignoring traffic lights, sometimes resulting in avoidable accidents.

This underlines the need to enforce a statewide ban on okada to prevent further abuse.

The defiance has spread to operators of tricycles popularly known as Keke Marwa or Keke NAPEP.

This puts the lives of Lagosians at risk and constitutes a serious threat to public safety and order.

The clampdown began in 2006 when the government banned okada operations between 7 pm and 6 am.

In 2012, Governor Babatunde Fashola introduced the Lagos State Road Traffic Law. It prohibits okadas and tricycles on certain routes and restricts motorcycles with engine capacities below 200cc from major expressways. The law mandates a minimum 200cc engine for motorcycles for mail or courier services.

The state government reiterated the ban in 2015 but was largely unsuccessful. By 2017, the government added major highways and bridges to the list of restricted areas. It established the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law 2018, which came into effect in February 2018.

Section 46 (1) of the law stipulates that “no person shall ride, drive or propel a motorcycle or tricycle on a major highway within the state, and any person in contravention of this provision commits an offence liable on conviction to imprisonment for a term of three years with such motorcycle or tricycle forfeited to the State.”

The state government barred these transport operators from six local governments, nine LCDAs, 10 major highways, 40 bridges and flyovers with effect from February 1, 2020. Ride-hailing bikes were also added to the list when they became a nuisance.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has restated the ban from time to time, with regular enforcement raids by the state’s task force on environmental sanitation and special offences, as well as the Nigeria Police Force.

Though the operations of these bikes and tricycles greatly aid transportation in the bustling metropolis, there is an overarching imperative for their activities to be strictly regulated and extended all over the state. The requirement that riders and their passengers use helmets has been largely ignored.

Between 2016 and 2019, Lagos State recorded over 10,000 accidents involving okadas and tricycles, resulting in more than 600 deaths. The National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, in Lagos, also set up an “okada ward” to handle cases arising from bike crashes.

The state government must provide more buses and other public transportation options to cater to the needs of commuters affected by such a ban and reintegrate the riders into alternatives.

There should be collaboration with the private sector to overhaul the transportation system and implement new data-driven decisions after due consultation with the public and other stakeholders.

Most importantly, the safety of lives and property in Lagos must remain the government’s highest priority.

PoliticsOnanuga Writes Me To Delete My Posts On Tinubu - Sowore by treesun(op): 4:40pm On Sep 09, 2025
Triggered by My Statement, Presidential Spokesperson @BayoOnanuga Writes Me to Delete My Posts on Tinubu

Presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, wrote directly to me on WhatsApp, asking that I delete my tweet and Facebook post in which I referred to President Bola Tinubu as a criminal based on Tinubu’s recent speech in Brazil, where he claimed that there is “no more corruption in Nigeria.”

Onanuga argued that my interpretation was a “misfire,” claiming Tinubu was only referring to the process of sourcing foreign exchange and not corruption as a whole. He even cited examples from business figures like Samad Rabiu to defend his point, and then advised me to delete my post.

Here is his WhatsApp message to me: Good afternoon. Your August 26 tweet that the DSS is complaining about is anchored on a total misinterpretation of what the President said in Brazil. He said there was no more corruption regarding sourcing foreign exchange and that you do not need to know CBN Governor Cardoso to get forex. Prominent business people like Samad Rabiu have all given testimony about this. That was what he meant. Nothing more. You truly misfired. I will advise that you delete the contentious post. Good afternoon.

And here is my response:

Good afternoon. I am surprised that you consider it appropriate to dictate to citizens like me how to interpret what is already in the public domain, especially when it comes to videos and matters that touch on the State of the Nation.

What is more troubling is that in Nigeria today, anyone who dares to criticise the President is instantly subjected to harassment by the DSS, political thugs, and every coercive instrument the state can muster. I once thought perhaps you were unaware of such abuse, but it is now clear you are complicit.

In this regard, it is you who has misfired. Your request reflects not only poor judgment but also the mindset of the principal you represent.

Nota Bene:* I have known Bayo Onanuga for many decades. Back when I was a student leader in Lagos, Tempo, The News, and PM News were our go-to platforms. Later, before founding SaharaReporters, I even moonlighted as a Special Correspondent for The News, working alongside Kunle Ajibade and @BabafemiOjudu to produce some of the hottest stories of that era.

This clarification is necessary because it explains why Mr. Onanuga may have chosen to write me a private message over my recent post. Out of respect, I sought his permission to make our exchange public, but he did not reply.

PoliticsDSS Personnel Lament Death Of 8 Colleagues, Hardship During Promotion Exam by treesun(op): 4:51pm On Sep 08, 2025
Personnel Of Secret Police DSS Lament Death Of 8 Colleagues, Hardship During Promotion Exam

Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) have expressed outrage over what they described as the "inhumane and chaotic conditions" that characterised the agency’s recent promotion examination exercise, which reportedly led to the death of eight officers.

SaharaReporters learnt from top insiders that the tragedy occurred as many personnel were forced to fund their own travel and accommodation for the exams, with no financial support from the agency.

The situation, sources said, created extreme hardship and anxiety, ultimately costing the lives of officers who collapsed or fell ill while struggling to meet the demands of the process.

It is with profound dismay that we note the recent release of the DSS promotion results,” a senior officer told SaharaReporters.

This process has been marred by unparallelled tragedy, with the reported loss of eight officers who died due to travel-related anxiety and hardships. Compounding this grief is the injustice of self-funded logistics, as no official travel or hotel allowances were provided.”

Beyond the fatalities, sources accused the DSS leadership of overseeing a compromised examination riddled with incompetence and lack of transparency.

They alleged that unqualified individuals set and marked the tests, leading to an abysmally low pass rate that has deepened resentment across the service.

The integrity of the examination itself is in serious doubt. The outcome, a pass rate of less than 50% for the interview stage, is a direct reflection of this incompetence and has caused widespread disenchantment across all ranks,” the source explained.

“This entire affair represents a profound betrayal of the service’s dedicated personnel and demands immediate and thorough review.”

Figures obtained by SaharaReporters confirm the widespread discontent, showing shockingly low success rates across several cadres: CSIO to ADIS: 44.4% (284/640), PSIO to CSIO: 45.0% (179/398), SSIO to PSIO: 74.5% (379/509), SIO I to SSIO: 45.2% (132/292), SIO II to SIO I: 38.2% (557/1460), SO to SIO II: 56.6% (162/286), ASO to SO: 31.6% (372/1176), CD to ASO: 23.0% (34/148), DI to CD: 31.3% (194/619) and DII to DI: 45.5% (381/838).

An operative stressed that the atmosphere of fear and secrecy surrounding the service meant leadership was desperate to suppress details of the deaths and poor results from becoming public.

“This is why they are clamping down, they don’t want you to tell the public what has happened under the new leadership,” the officer said.
