Politics › Alleged Genocide: ‘incorrect, Nigeria Can’t Afford Internal Division’ – Oba Of L by treesun(op): 9:12am On Nov 03, 2025
The Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, has lashed out at US President Donald Trump over his claim that Christians are being killed in Nigeria.

Speaking on Sunday at his palace after marking his 82nd birthday, Akiolu described the comment as incorrect and capable of creating unnecessary tension, insisting such remarks misrepresent Nigeria’s reality and unfairly portray the nation.

The monarch said that Nigerians of different faiths had coexisted peacefully for decades, noting that both Christians and Muslims share common communities, celebrations, and challenges, reinforcing unity despite occasional security issues.

The traditional ruler stated that criminal activities and terrorism in parts of the country are not directed at any religion but are acts of misguided individuals and groups, appealing to international leaders to verify information before issuing official statements, stressing that careless comments can damage Nigeria’s global image.

Akiolu, who added that national unity remains essential, warned that Nigeria cannot afford internal division at a critical period of economic and security reforms, calling on Nigerians to maintain peaceful coexistence and avoid allowing religion, ethnicity, or politics to create unnecessary conflict.

“This comment by the US President is not only incorrect but can create unnecessary tension in Nigeria, something we cannot afford now.

“I also want to use this opportunity to call for Lagos to be granted special recognition because of its huge population and central role in Nigeria’s economy.

“The city had served as an economic powerhouse since the colonial era and continues to shoulder national responsibilities that demand federal support,” he said.

Politics › Ex-army Chief Buratai Tells Trump: “christian Genocide Is Fallacy, Acting On It by treesun(op): 9:10pm On Nov 02, 2025
His comments come as the United States announced plan for military action in Nigeria to wipe out the Islamic terrorists.

A former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (retd), under whose watch terrorists killed several Nigerian soldiers and officers, has warned the United States against taking military action over what he described as the “fallacy” of a Christian genocide.

In an article on Sunday he wrote, and titled "Mutual Security, Shared Prosperity: A Strategic Path Beyond the US–Nigeria Stalemate on Sunday", Buratai claimed that recent rhetoric from Washington risked plunging both nations into unnecessary conflict while undermining long-term cooperation.

His comments come as the United States announced plan for military action in Nigeria to wipe out the Islamic terrorists.

"The current confrontation between the United States and Nigeria, ignited by the spectre of foreign military intervention, represents a perilous crossroads," Buratai wrote.

He stated that while the situation presents "the danger of catastrophic miscalculation," it also offers "the potential for a more resilient and mutually advantageous alliance."

"The 'Christian genocide' narrative is a dangerously reductive distortion of Nigeria's intricate realities. For the United States, acting on this fallacy would be a profound strategic blunder; for Nigeria, it constitutes an existential menace."

Buratai warned that any coercive approach by Washington would "weaken, not strengthen, American credibility," portraying the U.S. as a "neo-colonial power instead of a trusted ally."

"Public ultimatums and intimidation directed at a sovereign nation of Nigeria’s stature—Africa's largest economy and most populous democracy—weaken, not strengthen, American credibility.

"It actively propels a nation of over 200 million people—and potentially the entire ECOWAS—deeper into the strategic embrace of rivals like China and Russia."

He argued that the U.S. should replace "public coercion" with "resolute, private collaboration," emphasising verified data, intelligence-sharing, and targeted support in counter-insurgency and security reform.

"Policy must be grounded in verified data, not inflammatory fiction," he advised, calling for bipartisan congressional visits to "witness the conflict's complex dynamics firsthand.

"The US must recognise that Nigeria's economic vision, embodied by the transformative Dangote Refinery, represents a monumental opportunity, not a threat," he said. "A stable, prosperous Nigeria is an infinitely more valuable ally than a fractured, dependent state."

"Nigeria’s rejoinder cannot rest on indignant denials; it must be a swift, sophisticated, and assertive campaign to reclaim its narrative.

"This requires an immediate diplomatic surge… and dispatching high-level delegations of esteemed Christian and Muslim leaders to directly dismantle the genocide falsehood before U.S. decision-makers."

Calling for national unity, Buratai urged Nigerians—regardless of religion—to rally behind the government in defense of sovereignty.

"The threat to Nigeria’s sovereignty and corporate existence demands that every citizen, Muslim and Christian alike, rally with unwavering unity behind the government," he said.

"A nation that demonstrably conquers its own challenges and stands united against internal schisms offers no justification for foreign intrusion."

On Friday, President Trump said that, in response to claims of genocide against Christians in Nigeria, he had redesignated the country as a “Country of Particular Concern."

He had announced the decision on his Truth Social media platform.

“Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “Thousands of Christians are being killed. Radical Islamists are responsible for this mass slaughter. I am hereby making Nigeria a ‘COUNTRY OF PARTICULAR CONCERN’ — But that is the least of it,” he posted.

The Nigerian government has denied claims of Christian genocide in the country.

The Bola Tinubu-led Presidency had emphasised that Nigeria’s constitution enshrines the protection of religious rights and that his administration continues to ensure equality for all faiths across the country.

Politics › Christian genocide: Tinubu treated you well but you betrayed him - MURIC to CAN by treesun(op): 7:18pm On Nov 01, 2025
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has accused the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) of betraying President Bola Ahmed Tinubu despite what it described as his “generous consideration” for Christians in federal appointments.

This comes after former US President Donald Trump reportedly placed Nigeria back on the list of “Countries of Particular Concern” (CPC) over alleged genocide against Christians.

In a statement by its Founder and Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, MURIC criticised some Christian leaders for allegedly petitioning the US government about religious killings in Nigeria.

“Despite vehement denial of Christian genocide by the Nigerian government, US President Donald Trump yesterday redesignated Nigeria as a country of particular concern,” Akintola said.

The group dismissed the US decision as “misplaced and distorted,” insisting that the situation in Nigeria had been misrepresented.

“This redesignation is blurred, misplaced and distorted. It is a complete misrepresentation of the true picture on the ground in Nigeria,” MURIC said.

According to the organisation, certain Christian leaders were responsible for Nigeria’s negative image abroad. Akintola accused CAN of amplifying claims that Christians were being targeted, rather than correcting the “false and misleading narrative.”

“It will be recalled that some Christian leaders had written frivolous petitions to the US Congress, claiming that Christians were the only ones being killed by terrorists in Nigeria. Instead of debunking this, CAN simply amplified it,” he stated.

MURIC expressed disappointment in CAN’s response, saying it expected the Christian body to act with greater responsibility given its national influence.

“We are nonplussed by the actions of these Christian leaders, especially CAN, which is expected to know better,” the group said.

Akintola further argued that President Tinubu had shown goodwill to Christians through key appointments and other benefits, noting that over 60 percent of appointments reportedly went to Christians.

“CAN’s action is a stab in the back, considering President Tinubu’s preference for Christians in appointments, favours and privileges over and above his Muslim brethren,” MURIC stated. “The president himself confirmed that 62% of all appointments went to Christians. The First Lady, Senator Remi Tinubu, was even more generous to them than Father Christmas.”

The group described the alleged petitions to the US as “the mother of all betrayals,” accusing those behind them of disloyalty to the President and the nation.

“President Tinubu does not deserve this,” MURIC said, adding that while the US may have its own political motives, some Nigerians were responsible for feeding misleading information to American authorities.

Politics › Bandits Slay Pastor, Abduct 20 Worshippers In Kaduna Community by treesun(op): 7:49am On Oct 31, 2025
Ibrahim Hassan-Wuyo

KADUNA—The United Church of Christ in Nigeria, UCCN, also known as HEKAN, has raised the alarm over the killing of one of its pastors, Reverend Yahaya Kambasiya, and the abduction of over 20 persons during a fresh attack on the Farin Dutse community in Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, October 28, 2025, when heavily armed bandits invaded the quiet community, shooting sporadically and causing panic among residents.
The attackers reportedly whisked away several villagers, including worshippers from the HEKAN Church.

In a statement by the President of HEKAN, Reverend Dr. Amos Kiri, the church described the attack as “callous, inhumane, and wicked,” lamenting the continuous targeting of Christian communities and clergy in the area.

“With a heavy heart, on behalf of HEKAN Headquarters, I wish to inform the world of a tragic incident that occurred in Farin Dutse, Kauru LGA of Kaduna State, where bandits attacked our pastor and other persons in the area,” Dr. Kiri stated.

Quoting a field report from the Chairman of the HEKAN Kauru District Church Council, Rev. Dauda Gambo, he explained that the bandits invaded the community at dawn, firing indiscriminately and forcing residents to flee into nearby bushes.“The bandits invaded the community and started shooting sporadically. Reverend Kambasiya and a few others took refuge in a nearby farm. Thinking the gunmen had left, he came out of hiding, only to be shot in the back. The bullet pierced through his chest, and he died instantly,” the statement said.

Dr. Kiri noted that the late clergyman’s remains had been deposited in a morgue, while the church was consulting with his family on burial arrangements.

The HEKAN President recalled that this was not the first time the church had been attacked in the area. On December 4, 2024, bandits abducted about 50 persons, including a HEKAN pastor, Reverend Francis Lawal, who later died in captivity.

Similarly, on October 19, 2025, four members of the HEKAN Kakude Local Church were kidnapped and are still being held by their captors.

“The continuous attacks on our members in Kauru have become worrisome. We call on security agencies and relevant authorities to go after these bandits and rescue those abducted. Families of the victims are passing through unbearable trauma,” Dr. Kiri stated.

He urged Nigerians to pray for the bereaved families and those still in captivity, calling for divine intervention in the country’s worsening security situation.

“HEKAN as a church requests your prayers for the family, the Church, and the community during this trying moment. We also pray that God will intervene in the affairs of our nation and bring an end to these incessant killings and kidnappings,” he said.

The church disclosed that it had officially informed the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the Northern States and Kaduna State, as well as the Divisional Police Station in Kauru and other relevant authorities, about the incident.

Politics › 15% Fuel Import Tariff Will Worsen Hardship, Says Delta APC Chieftain by treesun(op): 5:18pm On Oct 30, 2025
A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in Delta State, Chief Ayiri Emami, has faulted President Bola Tinubu’s approval of a 15 per cent ad-valorem import duty on petrol and diesel, warning that the move will worsen the suffering of ordinary Nigerians.

Emami raised the concerns at a press conference held in Abuja on Thursday.

The Federal Inland Revenue Service, which initiated the proposal and secured the President’s approval, said the new tariff was designed to protect domestic refineries, stabilise the downstream oil sector, and strengthen local refining capacity.

FIRS Chairman, Zacch Adedeji, explained that the initiative was part of ongoing reforms to “operationalise crude transactions in local currency, strengthen local refining capacity, and ensure a stable, affordable supply of petroleum products across Nigeria.”

But Emami, who is also the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of A & E Group, an oil, construction and haulage company, disagreed.

Speaking with journalists, he lamented that the policy would “hurt the masses, not marketers.”

The APC stalwart also urged the President to suspend it until the government provides more relief to Nigerians.

“Anybody advising Mr President to impose a 15 per cent tax on petroleum right now is not doing him any good. This kind of policy will not hurt marketers — it will hurt ordinary Nigerians.

“Whatever tax you put on petroleum goes straight back to the people on the streets. Nigerians are already hungry and struggling,” he said.

Emami also warned that the cost of fuel has already crippled daily livelihoods, particularly among rural and riverine communities dependent on fishing and transport.

He said, When you buy fuel, it determines whether you can even go out to fish. It’s not that the fish are gone — it’s that we can’t afford to reach them anymore.

“For me, that 15 per cent should be kept aside until the government provides more relief to Nigerians. Even after removing the fuel subsidy, we haven’t seen much positive reflection. Things are still hard. So why add another burden?”

The oil mogul also expressed fear that certain persons must have been misleading the President.

“Some people don’t care about Mr President or what he’s going through — they just want to create more problems. Those are my honest opinions on the matter,” he added.

PUNCH Online reported that Tinubu’s approval of the new tariff was conveyed in an October 21, 2025, letter to the FIRS and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, directing immediate enforcement.

According to official projections, the 15 per cent import duty could increase the landing cost of petrol by about ₦99.72 per litre — nudging pump prices in Lagos to around ₦964.72 per litre, though still below regional averages.

The policy, government sources say, is part of efforts to encourage the Dangote Refinery and modular plants in Edo, Rivers, and Imo states to scale up production and reduce Nigeria’s dependence on fuel imports, which still account for roughly 67 per cent of national demand.

However, industry experts warn that without corresponding relief measures, the new duty could further squeeze households already battling the effects of fuel subsidy removal and inflation.

Politics › Alleged Coup Plot: Nigerian Military Reveals Identity Of Naval Officer by treesun(op): 2:32pm On Oct 30, 2025
SaharaReporters had exclusively reported the arrest and subsequent detention of the senior military officers led by an Army Brigadier General for planning a coup on October 1st Independent Day celebrations.

An officer of the Nigerian Navy, Lieutenant Commander B Abdullahi, has been identified as one of the senior military officers detained by the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) for allegedly planning a coup d’etat to overthrow President Bola Tinubu.

SaharaReporters had exclusively reported the arrest and subsequent detention of the senior military officers led by an Army Brigadier General for planning a coup on October 1st Independent Day celebrations.

While the Nigerian military in a statement claimed the detention of the officers was linked to "repeated failure in promotion examinations and perceived career stagnation", top sources had revealed that they were actually arrested over a coup plot.

A top source from the Nigerian military authorities told SaharaReporters on Thursday that a Naval officer and two Air Force personnel are among the detained officers, while the others are from the Nigerian Army.

The authoritative source identified the Navy personnel as Lt Commander B Abdullahi.

Abdullahi is of the 56 Regular Course of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA).

The detained officers, drawn from the army, navy, and air force, have been held for over three weeks in an undisclosed Abuja facility under what sources described as “unusual and suspicious conditions.”

Family members had told SaharaReporters they initially believed their relatives had been kidnapped, as there was no official communication from the military regarding their arrests.

Earlier, SaharaReporters had revealed one of the alleged leaders of the plot as one Lieutenant Colonel Al-Makura.

“Like I told you earlier, it was trio service. Two Air Force personnel. One from Bayelsa State and the other from Jigawa. Also, a Naval Officer was arrested, he is B Abdullahi (56RC),” the source told SaharaReporters.

SaharaReporters reported exclusively on Tuesday how some Nigerian Army personnel raided the Abuja residence of former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources and ex-Governor of Bayelsa State, Mr Timipre Sylva, in connection with the alleged coup plot currently under investigation by the DIA.

Multiple security sources told the newspaper that the army raid occurred at Sylva’s home in the Maitama area of Abuja.

According to insiders, a “special military team” carried out the operation after intelligence linked the “former South-South governor” to secret meetings allegedly held with some of the detained military officers.

“Nigerian Army special team ransacked the home of Timipre Sylva, who is believed to have fled Nigeria,” one top source familiar with the development had told SaharaReporters.

“He is the South-South former governor frequently mentioned in the case. His brother, named Paga, was picked up during the raid. The operation also extended to his Bayelsa residence.”

However, in a statement issued on Wednesday by his Special Assistant on Media and Public Affairs, Julius Bokoru, Sylva dismissed claims that he fled the country to evade questioning, clarifying that he has been abroad for a routine medical check-up and a professional engagement.

Bokoru added that the former minister’s Abuja home suffered significant damage during the raid, adding that no clear reason or authorisation had been provided by the security personnel involved.

“Despite sustained efforts, I have been unable to ascertain the reasons or authorisation for this raid. The officers did not provide any categorical explanation for their actions, either at the time or subsequently,” he had said.

IMF Warns Nigeria Over Rising Debt, Falling Oil Revenue and Fiscal Risks

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has issued a cautionary note to Nigeria, warning that the country’s heavy reliance on oil, growing domestic debt, and overly optimistic revenue projections pose significant thr+ats to its economy.

The warning came during the IMF’s latest Article IV consultation, which revealed that Nigeria’s 2025 budget remains vulnerable due to declining oil prices, reduced production output, and a fiscal deficit projected to reach 4.7% of GDP.

Detty December: Nigerian int’l travellers to pay extra $11.5 charge per ticket from Dec. 1

From December 1, 2025, international passengers flying into or out of Nigeria will pay an additional $11.5 levy per ticket under the new Advance Passenger Information System (APIS) initiative.

The new charge raises Nigeria’s total aviation security levy to $31.50 and is expected to generate about $46 million annually for the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

According to the agency, APIS will enhance airport security, track passenger data, and improve border control through a single-window system over the next 20 years.

The levy applies to all international airlines, with exemptions for infants, diplomats, airline crew on duty, and passengers in transit or rerouted due to weather or technical issues.

However, this new fee adds to existing charges such as the $20 security levy, Passenger Service Charge (PSC) of up to $100, and the five per cent Ticket Sales Charge (TSC).

Experts warn the move could worsen already high travel costs, making Nigeria’s airfares among the most expensive in Africa, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

Aviation analyst Chris Amokwu said the decision would burden travellers and discourage air travel, while Group Captain John Ojikutu (rtd) described it as “multiple taxation” unless the old $20 levy is abolished.

IATA has repeatedly criticised Nigeria’s excessive aviation charges, noting that Abuja and Lagos airports are now the costliest in Africa, despite limited improvements in infrastructure.

Politics › FG Manipulating Food Prices For Political Gains – ADC by treesun(op): 8:18am On Oct 28, 2025
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused the federal government of dishonesty over its claims of increased local food production, arguing that widespread insecurity and the displacement of farmers—especially in northern Nigeria—make such assertions untrue.

The party lamented that even farmers who have not been displaced are struggling to afford fertilisers and other essential agricultural inputs due to soaring costs.

In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC questioned the rationale behind hoarding imported food while millions of Nigerians face hunger, describing it as a deliberate weaponisation of poverty for political advantage.

The ADC called for a comprehensive overhaul of the country’s agricultural strategy, urging the government to implement policies that protect local production, stabilise food prices, safeguard farmers’ lives, and ensure long-term food sovereignty.

“The ADC is deeply concerned about the Federal Government’s misleading narrative around the so-called drop in food prices. Contrary to what is being celebrated in official circles, the reality on the ground—as confirmed by struggling farmers and families across the country—is that the Tinubu administration is manipulating food prices and weaponising hunger for political gains,” the statement said.

The party said the reported reduction in food prices is artificial and driven by import waivers that have flooded the market with cheap foreign food.

“This is neither evidence of sound economic policy nor proof of increased local production. While it may temporarily reduce food prices, it comes at a heavy cost to local farmers who can no longer compete due to rising input prices, particularly fertilisers, and worsening insecurity,” the ADC said.

The party further described as “strange and dishonest” the government’s claim that its policies are boosting domestic production at a time when many farmers have been displaced by bandits.

“How can production be increasing when the rural economy is under siege by bandits and the cost of planting is now beyond the reach of the average farmer?” the statement added.

Politics › FG Sets Up Committee To Clear ₦4 Trillion Debts Owed To GENCOs by treesun(op): 8:50pm On Oct 27, 2025
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Power, Mr. Mahmuda Mamman, announced the development on Monday in Abuja at the 10th-anniversary celebration of the Association of Power Generation Companies of Nigeria (APGC).

The President Bola Tinubu-led Nigerian government has constituted a committee to resolve the longstanding debt crisis plaguing Power Generation Companies (GenCos).

The move, coming after years of strained relations between the government and power producers over unpaid invoices, is aimed not only at clearing the arrears but also at creating a payment structure that ensures future sustainability.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Power, Mr. Mahmuda Mamman, announced the development on Monday in Abuja at the 10th-anniversary celebration of the Association of Power Generation Companies of Nigeria (APGC).

Mamman, who was represented by Director in the Ministry, Mrs. Evangeline Babalola, said the committee’s task extends beyond debt repayment to establishing mechanisms that would prevent a recurrence of the liquidity crisis that has crippled the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).

“In recognition of the critical importance of resolving this issue for the sustainability of our power sector, Mr. President has constituted a committee specifically mandated to address the payment of outstanding debts owed to the GenCos,” he said.

He commended the GenCos for their endurance and patriotism despite operating under immense financial strain.

"You have not abandoned your posts in spite of severe liquidity challenges that would have forced closure in any other industry. This is not just business; this is patriotism in action,” Mamman said.

He assured industry players that President Tinubu was fully aware of the liquidity challenges confronting the sector and remained determined to implement measures that would bring lasting relief.

“As we work to resolve the debt situation, I encourage you to maintain the same spirit of resilience and commitment that has characterised your operations over the past decade,” Mamman said.

The event, themed “A Decade of Powering Progress, Driving Nigeria’s Energy Transformation,” provided a platform for stakeholders to reflect on the sector’s decade-long journey since privatisation — one marked by ambition, investment, and recurring financial bottlenecks that continue to test Nigeria’s power reform agenda.

In April, Power generation companies (GenCos) in Nigeria raised the alarm over an imminent shutdown of electricity plants across the country due to a staggering N4trillion debt owed by the Nigerian government.

In a statement issued by Colonel Sani Bello, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Association of Power Generation Companies (APGC), the GenCos had disclosed that they were currently owed N2trillion for electricity supplied in 2024 and an additional N1.9 trillion in legacy debts.

The companies had lamented that they receive less than 30% of their monthly invoices for power supplied to the national grid, severely hampering their ability to sustain operations.

“The power generation companies have continued to bear the brunt of the liquidity crisis in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).

"Despite significant investments and efforts to ramp up capacity, GenCos face systemic constraints, unfriendly policies, and mounting debts without a clear repayment plan. The absence of firm contracts and a securitized market has further complicated financial planning," the statement read.

The GenCos had warned that the liquidity crisis could trigger a total collapse of the electricity value chain, leading to widespread blackouts.

Politics › Farmers, FG Disagree Over Drop In Food Prices by treesun(op): 8:51am On Oct 27, 2025
Farmers and the federal government have disagreed over the recent drop in prices of food items across the country.

Many of the farmers and their associations, who spoke to Daily Trust, cited what they described as massive importation of food items recently approved by the government as the cause of the price crash.

But the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, attributed the development to the various incentives introduced by the present administration to boost local production.

This is just as farmers have also expressed worries over the soaring cost of agricultural inputs which, according to them, is making food production increasingly difficult.

5 teenagers die in Gombe boat mishap
Farmers, FG disagree over drop in food prices
They told Daily Trust that they had held on to old stock, hoping to sell at higher prices to cushion earlier losses.

The government had, in September 2024, opened a 150-day duty-free window for the import of essential grains such as rice, maize, sorghum and wheat.

The July–December 2024 waiver was aimed at reducing the prices of essential food to provide relief to millions of Nigerians struggling with high living costs.

However, the import, which continued until January 2025, forced the prices of major grains, including wheat, millet, sorghum rice and maize, to plummet below production cost.

As a result of this, a large number of farmers who made significant financial investments in the production of grains are still losing money, and some of them are still trapped with old stock.

However, the minister, Abdullahi, said the government had yet to release the food items it imported. Answering questions from journalists during the World Food Day celebrations in Abuja, he said the government was aware of the impact of the drop in food prices and that it was working to mitigate it.

“We are fully aware of some of these dynamics, but let me make it very clear that, of course, we are looking at food security for our citizens, that is the overall interest of government. And if food is available, accessible, but not affordable, whoever is involved in the non-affordability will tell you it’s not food secure. Yet, we want an economy and a country where everybody is inclusively included in whatever we are doing.

“No one is left behind. So, what the government is doing is, ever since we came on board, we did not hide our intention to see that the prices of food come down to a level that is affordable.

“Now, what has happened is that from 2023, we went into massive production through the National Agricultural Growth Scheme and Agro-Pocket Programme. We injected a large volume, almost more than 500,000 metric tons of wheat, including maize, cassava, and all the other commodities that we promoted.

“This year, we also have a marginal increase, which means we are ramping up production. Now, the volume of food that is produced is responsible for the drop in prices,” he explained.

But farmers insisted that a simple visit to markets across the country would confirm the influx of imported food items, including other things like starch and ginger that were not among things approved.

And like in the states, price of foodstuffs, especially local rice, beans, guinea-corn, maize, millet, cassava flour, yam, and garri, has further crashed by up to 50 per cent in various rural markets in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Farmers count losses

Mrs Blessing Janaru said she had many bags of maize, paddy and millet from 2024 harvest unsold because if she sells now, ‘the losses will be too much.’

“I spent more than N2.5 million and if I sell all of them, I cannot even get N1.5 million. So I decided to keep it hoping the prices go up; instead, it continues to fall, particularly for maize and millet,” she said.

Prof. Yusuf Sani Ahmad, the Executive Director, of the National Agricultural Extension and Research Liaison Services (NAERLS), while presenting the 2025 Wet Season Agricultural Performance Survey (APS) recently, drew the attention of the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, to the fact that the current low prices of crops caused huge losses to the farmers.

“While the farmers have issue with high cost of inputs, especially fertilizer, the prices of food significantly crashed.

“Sir, the farmers are crying, it is only the consumers that are smiling. Something has to be done, that is the truth. Some are reporting that they would not go back to the farm. I have a client that lost over N27 million. So, there must be a special intervention to see how we can encourage the farmers to go back to the farm,” he told the minister in Abuja.

Alhaji Sani Abdullahi invested N6 million in rice production in Awe, Nasarawa State last season in a 10 hectare farm but could not recoup his investment because the price of rice crashed below the cost of production.

“When I sold the rice I harvested, I could only realise about N2.7 million. It was terrible! I became sick for some days because I was overthinking how to deal with the situation. I borrowed a lot of money to put into the farm and did not know what to do about it.

“This year, I did not even bother to farm rice because I’m still struggling to pay the loan I collected from different cooperatives,” he said.

Abdullahi said he knows many people who are in serious problem today because of similar issue.

Mohammed Kabir Salihu, chairman of the Maize Association of Nigeria (MAAN), Kaduna State chapter, said farmers are deeply concerned over the current trends.

“Remember the presidential fertiliser initiative under Buhari? Fertiliser was sold at between N5, 000 and N5,500. That made it affordable for smallholder farmers.

“At that time, a bag of maize sold at a low price, but it made sense because the cost of inputs was low. Fertiliser is like medicine to maize; you can’t grow maize without it. For example, last year under the Anchor Borrowers’ Programme, herbicides were about N1,500 to N1,700. Now, they cost N8,000 to N10,000. Even the labourers we hire have increased their charges drastically. A job that used to cost N50,000 now costs N300,000. That’s why we are appealing to the government to prioritize fertiliser supply more than anything else.

“We are deeply concerned. How can anyone buy urea at N50,000 or DAP at N70,000 to N80,000 per bag? Most of our maize producers are smallholder farmers. They don’t have the capital to buy inputs at such rates, let alone make any profit,” he said.

Cassava farmers in agony

A few months ago, cassava farmers suffered severe losses due to massive import of starch which crashed domestic price of cassava.

The situation is said to have angered industrial cassava processors who spent billions to set up factories to produce starch and high-quality food-grade flour, forcing some of them to shut down operations.

Daily Trust gathered that farmers are now left to rely solely on garri processors, who give reduced rates that are less than the cost of production, since industrial processors no longer purchase cassava from farmers.

Kehinde Lawrence, the programme manager of the Industrial Cassava Stakeholders’ Association of Nigeria (ICSAN), had earlier told the Daily Trust during a telephone interview that the processors and the farmers were in a distressed situation.

He said the association was concerned that a lot of people had gone into cassava production, and that the output of the harvest, which is taken primarily by industrial processors, suffered a setback because these are the people who have the capacity to process.

In Idah, Kogi State, Ben Ameh had cultivated 40 acres of cassava but was unable to sell because the prices per ton crashed from N170,000 to N45,000.

“Even at that price, you will still have to pay transport. So, the whole thing is better imagined. I put more than N16 million in that farm but when we harvested, we could not even realize N10 million. It was a sad experience for me. That was the first time I tried cassava in such large quantity and everything collapsed,” he said.

Malam Hassan Yusuf, who farmed sesame said he invested about N 3 million into the venture but that he could only realize about N700,000 due to drop in the cost of the produce, He said he is discouraged by the development and that he will not cultivate it next year.

Current cost of production per hectare

Alhaji Faruk Rabi’u, a farmer in Kano, said the overall cost of cultivating one hectare of maize or rice has now gone up to almost N2 million, compared to the initial cultivation cost of N600,000 obtainable in previous years.

A director in the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, who prefers not to be mentioned, said the cost of producing most grains in some areas was about N650,000 per hectare at the beginning of the season but it had increased to over N1.2 million, a 100% increase by July.

At the beginning of this year’s rainy season, the retail prices for various fertilizers showed that NPK 20:10:10 was N49,000, NPK 15:15:15 was N52,000, urea was N36,500, granulated diammonium phosphate (DAP) was N70,000 per 50kg bag, while single super phosphate (SSP) was N39,500.

But in July, prices went up sharply, with DAP rising to N96,000, NPK 20:10:10, N60,000, and NPK 15:15:15 reaching N108,000 depending on the location.

Malam Bello Isah Lajawa, a farmer in Kano, said several rural markets in Bunkure, Kura, and Dawakin Tofa Local Government Areas, sold a 50kg bag of urea fertilizer between N50, 000 and N55,000, while NPK was sold at N55,000 and above as against the N22,000 sold in the previous farming season.

He further revealed that herbicides and pesticides had also witnessed sharp increases, with some brands selling at 80 per cent higher than last year’s prices.

The National President of the All Farmers’ Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Arc. Kabiru Ibrahim, had, in a recent chat with Daily Trust, warned that the country’s efforts to attain food security would be severely threatened by the high cost of fertiliser.

“Most of our Small Holder Farmers (SHFs) and a host of large-scale ones are groaning under the high cost of fertiliser, and this certainly portends a serious threat to the attainment of food security in Nigeria,” he stated.

In most markets across the country, a 100 kg bag of maize currently costs N22,000, a bag of paddy costs N35,000, soy beans cost N45,000, sorghum N20,000, millet N35,000, and beans N65,000.

However, there is minimal fluctuation in these pricing across different locations.

Haruna Saidu, a large scale farmer in Mutum Biyu, Gassol Local Government Area of Taraba State, said he spent millions on his maize farm and that price has not gone up, therefore, he may not make any profit.

He accused the federal government of discouraging farmers from growing farm produce, adding that importation of grains like maize and the refusal to subsidise farm inputs is killing farming.

Another farmer, Lawal Mayoreniyo, in Ardo Kola Local Government Area, said farmers were gradually shifting from farming of food crops to cash crops because of crash in the price of grains.

More farmers speak

Salihu Ibrahim, a farmer in Lemu, Gbako LGA Niger State, said farming is no longer viable on its own unless they seek out other sources of income.

“We, farmers are already in a mess. On our last market day, a bag of maize was N20, 000 while a mudu went for N300. In some places, a bag of maize is N22, 000. And not only maize, prices of other farm produce have reduced drastically. We have lost our investments. But as I always say, farmers should no longer rely on farming because prices of what we produce are going down while prices of what we need to buy after selling our farm produce are not going down. You can see the gap and disparities.

Politics › Shari’ah Council: Kukah’s Remarks Unfair, Insensitive by treesun(op): 1:21pm On Oct 26, 2025
The Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria (SCSN), Kaduna State Chapter, has condemned recent comments by Reverend Matthew Hassan Kukah, which linked the implementation of Shari’ah law in northern Nigeria to rising violence.

The Council described the remarks as “unfair and insensitive,” insisting that the cleric’s views misrepresent both the history and purpose of Islamic law in the region.

In a statement signed by Engr. AbdurRahman Hassan, Secretary of the Council, the SCSN argued that Kukah’s comments failed to acknowledge the deep spiritual and cultural roots of Shari’ah in northern Nigeria.

“Shari’ah, as practiced in these states, is not a political weapon but a reflection of faith, tradition, and moral discipline deeply rooted in the lives of millions of Muslims,” the statement read.

The Council maintained that violence in the region stems from broader socio-political challenges, not religion.

“Numerous studies affirm that violence often stems not from religion but from corruption, poor governance, and societal inequality,” Hassan stated.

“It is therefore unfair and insensitive to attribute unrest to a system that millions of Nigerians follow peacefully and voluntarily.”

The SCSN also reminded critics that Shari’ah predates colonial rule in Nigeria and remains an integral part of Muslim identity.

“Muslims in northern Nigeria practiced Shari’ah centuries before colonial rule. It remains a way of life, not an imposition,” the statement noted.

The Council warned that dismissing or ridiculing the system undermines peaceful coexistence and mutual respect among Nigeria’s diverse religious communities.

Emphasizing interfaith respect, Hassan said:“No responsible Muslim scholar attacks Canon Law; likewise, no Christian cleric should insult Shari’ah.”

The Council also challenged Reverend Kukah to propose how Canon Law could be applied in Christian-majority states “to determine whether his objection to Shari’ah stems from principle or prejudice.”

The statement concluded with a call for restraint among religious leaders and a renewed commitment to peace.

“Religious leaders must be agents of peace, not division. The true test of any legal system, religious or secular, is its ability to protect rights, promote justice, and foster peace,” Hassan said.

He reaffirmed that, when properly applied, Shari’ah promotes justice and harmony — not violence — and urged Nigerians to focus on good governance and national unity rather than demonizing any faith tradition.

Politics › Nigerians Deserve Truth On Sudden Sack Of Service Chiefs – ADC Tells Tinubu by treesun(op): 7:16pm On Oct 24, 2025
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to tell Nigerians the real reasons behind the sudden removal of the country’s service chiefs, saying the abrupt shake-up has raised questions about transparency and stability in government.

In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party said that although the President, as Commander-in-Chief, has the authority to make such changes, the timing, coming amid widespread rumours of an attempted coup, makes openness and clear communication essential.

“We acknowledge that the President reserves the power to make such changes as he may deem fit. However, we are somewhat concerned that this change is coming in the wake of widespread rumours of an attempted coup,” the ADC said.

The opposition party criticised the Federal Government for what it described as a confusing and evasive response to the rumours, saying Nigerians deserved clarity, not mixed signals.

“The reactions of government to the dangerous rumour have veered between deliberate obfuscation and outright confusion in a matter that required crystal clarity,” Abdullahi said.

The ADC also pointed out that many of the service chiefs removed had been appointed only about 28 months ago, while the current Chief of Defence Staff had only been in his previous post as Chief of Army Staff for a year. It argued that such a major change in the military hierarchy could not have been made without serious underlying reasons.

“This kind of decision has serious and far-reaching implications for stability within the ranks and therefore could not have been taken without strong reasons,” the party noted.

The ADC said Nigerians deserve a categorical explanation from the government, stressing that its concern was for the country’s peace and the health of its democracy.

“As an opposition political party, our interest remains the stability of our country and our democracy. In light of developments in our neighbourhood, particularly in Chad and across the Sahel, we are gravely concerned,” it said.

The party accused the Tinubu administration of being distracted, saying insecurity is worsening even as government attention appears more focused on politics than on protecting lives and property.

“Insecurity continues to spread, with terrorist groups staging a comeback in some parts of the country, while bandits reign supreme in others.

“But this is not the reason the government is changing the service chiefs. Instead, the administration’s attention appears fully focused on regime politics rather than securing the lives of Nigerians,” the ADC said.

It warned that the sweeping changes in the military could deepen public anxiety and feed further conspiracy theories rather than restore confidence.

“This action, if anything, will only further promote rumours and conspiracy theories,” the party cautioned.

The ADC further urged the Federal Government to be transparent about its decision and reassure citizens that Nigeria’s democracy is not under threat.

“We therefore reiterate our earlier position that the Federal Government must address the issue transparently and reassure Nigerians that our democracy is not under threat,” the party said.

Politics › Insecurity: Defend Yourselves, Governor Bago Charges Niger Residents by treesun(op): 6:38am On Oct 23, 2025
…Vows never to negotiate or pay ransom to bandits
…Ban mining activities in 8 LGAs

Governor Mohammed Bago of Niger State has vowed never to negotiate with bandits or pay ransom for kidnapped victims, saying instead residents must be prepared to defend themselves against attacks.

The governor made the disclosure, when he visited the people of Rijau and Magama Local Government Areas of the state, whose communities were recently attacked by bandits in Kontagora.

The governor said: “The state has reached a point where the people must stand up and defend themselves because ransom will only turn kidnapping into a thriving business.

“I will not negotiate with bandits. I will not pay ransom. The moment we start paying, they will open shop on our heads and continue kidnapping people. The situation has reached a state of war that requires collective resistance.

“We are surrounded by enemies, but we will not give up. The constitution gives us the right to defend our lives and property, and we will do just that. There is no going back.”

Describing as “embarrassing and unacceptable” the frequent invasions of communities and the displacement of residents, Bago announced plans by his administration to recruit and train 10,000 members into the Joint Task Force, JTF, to help restore security across the state.

A statement by his Special Adviser on Print Media, Aisha Wakaso, said the governor has also declared a total ban on all mining activities across Zone C of the state, covering eight local government areas of Magama, Kontagora, Rijau, Wushishi, Mariga, Borgu, Mashegu and Agwara.

He said: “Illegal mining has become one of the major drivers of insecurity in the area, with miners often accessing forest zones unharmed while residents suffer repeated attacks.

“It is suspicious that miners can enter the forests freely, yet the bandits don’t touch them. I have now ordered the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, to arrest anyone caught engaging in mining activities.”

The governor assured victims of recent attacks that his administration would provide support, including compensation for families of those killed, medical treatment for the injured, and assistance for those who lost their sources of livelihood.

Politics › Ondo Government Allays Fears, Says DSS Memo On Impending Terror Attacks "Are Rou by treesun(op): 11:07am On Oct 22, 2025
The security memo from the DSS had revealed intelligence about imminent coordinated terrorist attacks by the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) on several communities in Ondo and Kogi States.

The Ondo State government has reacted to a leaked security memo from the Department of State Services (DSS) warning of a possible terrorist attack in parts of the state, assuring residents that there is no cause for panic.

The security memo from the DSS had revealed intelligence about imminent coordinated terrorist attacks by the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) on several communities in Ondo and Kogi States.

The classified memo, dated October 20, 2025, and addressed to the Brigade Commander, 32 Artillery Brigade of the Nigerian Army Corps of Artillery, Owena Cantonment, Akure, was signed on behalf of the State Director of Security, Ondo State, by one Hi Kana.

According to the document, intelligence confirmed plans by ISWAP terrorists to launch simultaneous attacks on soft targets across the two states.

The DSS specifically identified Eriti Akoko and Oyin Akoko communities in Akoko North-West Local Government Area, as well as Owo town in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State, as likely targets.

The Ondo State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr. Idowu Ajanaku, confirmed in a statement on Wednesday that the government was aware of the leaked memo reportedly addressed to the 32 Artillery Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Akure.

Ajanaku described the document as part of routine intelligence sharing among security agencies, noting that such reports are common in security operations and do not necessarily indicate imminent danger.

“The leaked memo is part of regular intelligence reports that are routinely shared among security agencies and the government. Such reports are a normal part of security operations aimed at identifying and preventing potential threats,” the statement read.

He assured residents that the intelligence had already been acted upon and that all relevant agencies were taking necessary steps to ensure the safety of lives and property across the state.

“The public can be assured that these reports are being acted upon by the government and relevant security agencies, and necessary precautions are being taken to ensure safety and security,” Ajanaku said.

He urged residents to remain calm and vigilant, and to promptly report any suspicious activity to the nearest security post rather than resorting to self-help.

The commissioner added that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa was in constant communication with security agencies and had directed increased surveillance, particularly in border communities that could be vulnerable to infiltration.

“The Ondo State Government, led by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, is taking several steps to protect residents, especially those in border communities, so that Ondo remains one of the safest states in the country,” he stated.

The statement further appealed to the public to cooperate with security agencies, maintain peace, and continue their normal daily activities, as efforts to strengthen the state’s security architecture are ongoing.

Politics › Our Reforms Will Cut ₦3.5 Trillion Post-Harvest Losses, Others – Minister by treesun(op): 8:46am On Oct 22, 2025
The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Abubakar Kyari, has said that a strategic and robust public-private partnership will reform the agricultural sector and cut the nation’s annual post-harvest losses estimated at N3.5 trillion.

The minister stated this during a high-level panel discussion at the FAO Hand-in-Hand Sahel Regional Initiative with a focus on accelerating capacity, partnerships, and investments to transform agrifood systems in the region, held in Rome, Italy, recently.

Senator Kyari said scaling up the Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZ), which is the largest such initiative in Africa, currently being expanded from eight to 27 states, will provide integrated infrastructure and reduce costs for agro-processors.

He added that implementing the Nigeria Postharvest Systems Transformation Programme (NiPHaST), will reduce the N3.5trn lost annually to postharvest inefficiencies through improved storage, cold chain, and warehousing solutions.

Kyari stressed the need for a Sahel region that would leverage strong institutions, innovative financing, strategic and robust public – private collaboration, and smart governance to unlock the full potential of farmers, processors, small businesses, and revolutionize the agricultural ecosystem.

The minister said, “The pathway to upscale is to implement a laudable agenda. Implementation is not abstract. It requires due diligence, smart governance, and unwavering political will.
