Sen. Bola Tinubu, the President-elect, has congratulated Prince Charles on his coronation as King of England, saying he looks forward to further engagements with the British Government. He said this in his congratulatory letter as the President-elect of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, to the crowned King on Saturday in Abuja. He noted that the splendour of British monarchy and its rich tradition came to the fore again and the world literally came to a standstill as Charles was crowned the new British King, with the appellation of King Charles III. “By way of this letter, therefore, I convey to you my warmest congratulations on your coronation,” Tinubu said. He said It was heartwarming that Charles accession to the throne came after 70-year reign of his iconic mother: Queen Elizabeth II, whose death in September 2022 left the entire world in grief, given her eventful reign. Read also:PDP to Tinubu: You lack capacity to fight corruption “Bearing your unique place in history as the first King to be inaugurated in Britain since 1937, I trust that you will follow in the glorious footsteps of your late mother and even surpass her achievements in United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. “Particularly remarkable about you is your love for the environment, importantly your life long crusade for sustainability and biodiversity,” Tinubu said. He expressed hope that the crowned King would continue to push for these initiatives with kind eyes on the situation and plight of the under-privileged people in Africa and around the world. He also expressed hope that during his reign, the excellent bilateral relationship between Nigeria and Britain would continue and even become stronger in the interests of the two countries. “I look forward to further engagements with you and the opportunity of a meeting in the nearest future as both of us had earlier indicated in discussions with mutual friends and associates. “Once again, I rejoice with you on your coronation and pray that God Almighty grant you strength and wisdom. “And make your reign successful for the benefit of not only the people of the Great Britain, but for the entire world. “Please rest assured of my highest regards always,” the Nigerian President-elect said. megamillion. https://businessday.ng/news/article/coronation-tinubu-says-he-looks-forward-to-further-engagements-with-britain/ |
Manchester City continue their quest to win the treble against Leeds, the latest team to have been labelled the Premier League’s ‘crisis club’. Pep Guardiola’s side were not at their best against West Ham on Wednesday but moved ahead of Arsenal with a win and could ramp up the pressure further. Should they beat Leeds, they will be four points ahead of the Gunners, who do not play until Sunday’s trip to Newcastle. They will be taking on a Leeds who recently appointed Sam Allardyce in a big gamble to beat the drop after some miserable form of late. |

Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, has urged aggrieved parties of the February 25 general elections to respect the sanctity of the court and humbly accept its decision in the coming days as final. Gowon made the call on Thursday in Abuja at the 15th edition of the PUNUKA Annual Lecture 2023 and symposium in honour of the late Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Chike Idigbe. The ex-military Head of State who emphasized the need for a strong, independent and impartial judiciary admonished aggrieved politicians and the public to abide by the decisions of the court. He said, “As we move forward as a nation, let us not forget the role that the Judiciary plays in nation-building, especially the apex court, in carrying out its duty of questioning the veracity of the decisions of the lower court. “As such, we need to allow the apex court their deliberations and come up with their decisions, and as the public, to be humble to accept their decision as final in order to maintain the sanctity of the judiciary as individuals and as an institution. “This is very important at this stage given the post-election litigation that is now going on. “Let us give the judiciary the opportunity to do their work and let us accept their decision as it is.” Acknowledging the challenge of the country since independence, he affirmed that “the judiciary plays a vital role in nation building and in keeping us united as a nation”. “The judiciary, in essence, is the guardian of the constitution and the rule of law… As a former head of state, I have seen and known firsthand the importance of the judiciary in maintaining stability and order in our society,” he stated. Meanwhile, Gen Gowon poured encomium on the late jurist and attested to his unwavering dedication to service and bravery in the dispensation of justice. “From what I have learnt of Justice Idigbe, his contributions to the judiciary and nation-building cannot be overemphasized. His unwavering commitment to upholding justice and the rule of law is a testament to his unflinching character and his belief in our nation evinced through his life and office.” Other dignitaries who graced the occasion and extolled the legacy of the late legal luminary were Babatunde Fashola, Minister for Works and Housing; Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, Chief Justice, Abubakar Malami, Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice among many others. Also speaking, Anthony Idigbe, Senior Partner, Punuka Attorneys and Solicitors acknowledged that “Justice Idigbe’s jurisprudence is still very relevant today. He had a focus on substantive justice and he established in many cases that form should never override substance. Those principles should guide the action of our judges today. “Some argue that there is no more adherence to judicial precedent, that it is dangerous for the system because that is what makes law science and the Judicial system strong. “Knowing when to depart from precedent becomes quite significant to prevent abuse, and there is a lot of guidance from some of Justice Idigbe’s cases.” He also called for holistic judicial reforms, adding that the same attention given to election petitions should be extended to commercial cases, as they are all critical to the nation’s survival. https://punchng.com/presidential-poll-allow-judiciary-do-their-work-gowon-cautions-litigants/ |

In order to avert congestion caused by articulated trucks, the Lagos State Government has approved the deployment of an e-call-up system for the Lekki-Epe Free Trade Zone corridor. This was disclosed by the state Commissioner for Transportation, Dr Frederic Oladeinde, at a stakeholders’ meeting held recently. According to a statement issued by the state government, the meeting was attended by government officials from the Ministry of Transportation, and representatives of Lekki Worldwide Investment Limited, Lagos Free Zone, Lekki Deep Sea Port and Messrs. The statement read in part, “The transport commissioner also shared the state and Federal Government plans on road network expansion and inter-modal transport systems at an initial meeting held with the five chairmen of local government areas and local council development areas in Epe division; representatives of Lekki Worldwide Investment Limited, Dangote Industries Limited, Nigeria Union Of Petroleum And Natural Gas Workers, Federal Road Safety Corps, and the Nigeria Police Force. “He further mentioned that an interim arrangement is also being put in place to decongest the roads through the evacuation of all illegal tankers from the red zone by a joint task force of the state, LGAs/LACDAs, security agencies and stakeholders.” https://punchng.com/lagos-to-tackle-lekki-epe-highway-gridlock-with-technology |
‘An incredible weapon’ – Guardiola praises Halaand and Alvarez on 2-1 win against Fulham Manchester City continue their treble push as they welcome West Ham to the Etihad. Pep Guardiola’s side may well be second in the Premier League when they take to the pitch, with Arsenal in action against Chelsea on Tuesday night, but the Premier League title race remains one they are firmly in control of. West Ham have not yet done enough to completely ease their relegation fears, with a chaotic defeat to Crystal Palace last time out leaving them with more work to do. There is still every chance this turns into a successful season for David Moyes’ side though, with a Europa Conference League semi-final to come. |
