Candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the September 19, 2020 governorship election in Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, on Friday urged voters in the state to go out en-masse on election day, cast their votes for the PDP and ensure they defend their votes by keeping an eagle-eye on the process and the results as they unfold.

Obaseki, the incumbent governor of Edo State who is seeking re-election, made the call when addressing party faithful in Ward 6, Ukhuse in Owan West during his re-election campaign rally in the Local Government Area (LGA).

“On the 19th of September, 2020, come out and vote massively for the PDP and make sure you stay back in your polling units to defend your vote to avoid manipulation,” Obaseki told voters.

“Don’t listen to them when they ask you to go home or even threaten you. If you obey them, they will manipulate the results,” he said.

The governor said his being to Ukhuse was a homecoming.

Four years ago, I couldn’t get to you people because of the bad road, but I made sure I constructed the road for easy transportation. Now you can move your commodities to the market and the next village for sales.

“The development of Edo is in your hands. Come out with your Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and vote for the PDP and I will make sure I keep all my promises to you all,” he said.

On his part, Kenneth Imasuangbon, PDP chieftain and former governorship aspirant, charged Edo electorate not to be intimidated despite threats of violence by the All Progressives Congress (APC), urging them to turnout en masse with their PVCs to vote for the PDP and ensure that their votes count.

Imasuangbon, who painted a grim picture of how he was victimised by political godfathers in the state for 16 years, urged the people to remain vigilant and support Governor Obaseki in the fight against godfathersim in the state.

For 16 years I, Mr. Kenneth Imasuangbon, have been contesting elections in Edo State; I have been a victim of the godfathers. This is why I am supporting Governor Godwin Obaseki for having the courage to defeat the godfather in Edo politics,” Imasuangbon said.

“Every Edo man and woman should take up this challenge that comes through courage and determination by saying no to the godfather,” he said.

Imasuangbon said he would lead in defending election results from his polling unit to ward and from his ward to the various collation centres.

“We hear they want to write election results; we are waiting for them. This election is an election of freedom; we are redefining democracy in Edo State.

“I call on every Edo person wherever you are to defend your votes. The greatest military all over the world is the people’s military,” he said.

Imasuangbon cited successes recorded by the Obaseki-led administration in education, agriculture, infrastructural development and road construction, among others as pointers for the massive support for the governor’s re-election.

The PDP chieftain further charged security agencies and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure the conduct of a free, fair and credible election in the state.

Obaseki has the goodwill of Edo people, and will coast to a record breaking massive victory so much so that Ize Iyamu will call him to concede defeat before INEC collation centre begin to announce results. Oshiomole will even be the one to recharge Ize Iyamu's phone line for that congratulatory call to Obaseki.

A former governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, has denied saying Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State will lose his re-election bid.
Mr Fayose in a statement by his spokesperson, Lere Olayinka, on Thursday, was responding to a former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bode George, who had berated him for allegedly making the prediction.
In his reaction, Mr Fayose said although Mr George does not deserve his response, he needed to set the record straight to avoid being misinterpreted.
“He may have deliberately read different meanings to what I said obviously because of Political gains he wants to make out of it and I care less. My position is that, for obvious reasons, I am not a fan of both Gov. Obaseki and Oshiomhole. That notwithstanding, I believe that Obaseki will win, but he should honour his agreement with the PDP by not returning to APC after assuming office for the second term for flimsy excuses.

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State on Monday reacted to a statement from the opposition camp, APC, which tagged Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki “an ingrate”.


The Chairman of the National Campaign Council of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, in his reaction said that; “Obaseki is not an ingrate, rather it is Oshiomhole that is fighting him (Obaseki) and his boy Ize-Iyamu that are ingrates.

“Oshiomhole had in 2016 said that Obaseki is the brain box behind his success as a governor. How can he now turn around to say the same person that was behind him as a brain box is now an ingrate.”

Wike further said that APC was not ready for the governorship elections in Edo State, noting that the APC was working to ensure cancellation of the polls by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

Wike in Port Harcourt, while reacting to issues raised during the Edo State APC campaign last week, stated that APC was only targeting to cause violence in the polls to make INEC stop and cancel the election till November when Obaseki’s tenure would elapse.

The campaign chair while calling on police and other security agencies to use the poll to rebuild their tarnished image said: “We have enough intelligence on what they want to do with the security in the election, but we will scuttle it.

Police is supposed to use Edo State election to clear their name and regain people’s confidence in them.
APC wants to do so, so that there will be enough violence in the election. Like the Chairman of INEC has said that the election will be stopped if there is violence. They want to cause violence so that the election will stop.

“They are not interested in the election so that INEC will stop it and then wait till November when Obaseki’s tenure will end. It is a calculation that they do not want the election to hold because Edo people are tired of the lies from Oshiomhole.”
Wike said Oshiomhole has been decimated at APC national office and that he wants to fall back on Edo State, urging people of the state to resist the perceived third term agenda of the former governor.
Wike, however, stated that it was high time that Nigerians begun to vote people of character and moral standing into power other than those who profess performance.

“Character must be one factor that everybody must consider in this election. It should not be based on performance because anyone can perform in office.

One thing that should be important in our elections is character and Obaseki has it. Ize Iyamu was charged to court by this APC government for corruption. Now they are saying he has not been proven guilty. There is no fight for corruption anywhere, all we have is witch-hunting.”

BENIN CITY – Efforts by candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the September 19 gubernatorial election, Osagie Ize-Iyamu to make inroads into Edo Central Senatorial District, were on Monday rejected as he was sent out of the palace of the Onojie of Igueben, HRH Ehizojie Eluojierior II.

A palace source who witnessed the humiliation of the APC candidate, who was in company of the former national chairman of APC, Adams Oshiomhole, said the unwanted visitors were told to leave Esan land as the APC neglected the region for the eight years Oshiomhole was governor of the state.

The source who pleaded not to be named, said: “The two unwanted visitors engaged in hot exchange of unpleasant words in Igueben, after they were told to leave Esan land by the monarchs who had converged on Igueben for the cold reception.

“In the ensuing hot exchange of words, Ize-Iyamu blamed Oshiomhole for his woes in Esan land and other parts of Edo State where they have faced similar rejection, since the party commenced campaigns.

“We overheard Oshiomhole saying he couldn’t be blamed for all Ize-Iyamu’s problems. The former APC national chairman said there can be no smoke without fire, and told the governorship candidate to be courageous enough to take responsibility for some of his past actions.”

The monarchs also cited the humiliation and dethronement of the Onojie of Uromi, His Royal Highness Anselm Aidenojie 11, for their action.

BENIN CITY – A coalition of various trade unions and artisans in Edo State Monday stormed the Edo State Government House to give their support to the second term bid of Governor Godwin Obaseki and his deputy, Comrade Philip Shaibu ahead of the September 19th governorship election.

They said their support was because of the progress the administration has achieved in the state in the last three and a half years and that the governor reduced the cost of shops when they cried out on the high amount they were paying.

Chairman of the artisans, Collins Ohis said “these are the coalition of traders and artisans in Edo state. As you see them they are over 37 associations represented today by their chairmen each. Your Excellency, we thank you for the peace and progress the traders enjoy, and we here promise you that we will work with you to achieve your reelection bid.”

On his part, the President of the traders and the leader of the coalition Pa G.O Ojo expressed gratitude to the Edo State Government for their commitment to humanity. His words “You have created an enabling environment for businesses to thrive in the state. The delay of the host community is what is dragging the construction of the standard market as pleaded by the traders association because the government has granted C of O already.”

He maintained that “Since the inception of Governor Obaseki’s administration, the traders have enjoyed smooth running in their businesses as abgeros no longer harass them like they do before, hence the decision to work with the governor.

We are not politicians, but we appreciate good leadership and that is why we are here today to say wherever you are, we will go,” they insisted. This group you are seeing today is the engine room of voters in Edo South.”
