Can somebody please enlighten me on how long it takes to open an account with a stockbroking firm in Nigeria. Last week Tuesday, i sent a scanned application form with my signature to GTI CAPITAL. As early as 8am on Wednesday my manager delivered a sum of N100,000.00 to them to open the account. As at close of business today the account was yet to be opened. Is this normal? |

When OBJ solicited and got donations to build the library, did he inform the donors that the funds would be diverted to building a 5 star hotel? That is the fundamental question here. If he did thats OK otherwise he had obtained money by deceit which is called 419. |

Anusule, I do not understand your question. Appeal? I was not refused an extension at any time, so the question of appeal does not arise. |

Orekinky, I might need your services. Can you state your email address so i can email you. |

To correct my last post, the correct address is www.vbsi.org.uk. hsmpforumltd.com are in court for a related case and not the 4-5year qualifying period for extension. |

I am on the HSMP visa for the fifth year. I ought to have qualified for indefinite leave in March 2007. Instead of the indefinite leave, i had to apply for extension for an additional year in fulfilment of the new legislation which extents the qualifying period from 4 to 5years retrospectively. The law is been challenged in court, but homeoffice lawyers are using all sort of tactics to delay the hearing. The next date has been fixed for 17th December 2007, by which time the first set of applicants approved under the scheme would have reached the 5year limit. If the ruling is favourable, i would be able to apply for indefinite leave immediately. For more information about this case visit www.vbsi.com. |

Seun, I have just converted the normal PHCN meters to the pay as you go at my property in naija. I suppose this is a bit of a risk, but am hoping it would be cheaper considering the fact that PHCN bills you, whether you consume electricity or not. |

I wanted to send a washing machine, dryer and a widescreen TV from UK to Lagos through airfreight. A friend of mine advised against this because of the very prohibitive cost of freight. He told me i can get these items almost at UK price in Lagos. Can somebody please advise me an average cost of a 7Kg washing machine, dryer and 32in TV. Please also let me know where i can purchase these items. A member of my staff will do the purchase on Thursday 26th July, i will therefore like to have an idea of the price so that i do not get cheated. |

Home sweethome. Struggle abroad for a few years and return to naija to contribute your quota. Live for too long abroad and you get sucked in to the system. Remember guys in naija are not sleeping. You would be amazed at the grounds they have covered if you visit home. |

Am sorry for the error. Makes no difference to my point of view. |

Cooljade, I was faced with a similar situation to yours in 2001 when i had to depart to the UK. It was a very difficult decision to make. I was torn between leaving my wife and 5 kids behind and making a decision to travel to UK. I will personally advise you to take the job in Lagos in other to improve your families financial situation. From what you have posted above, you love your wife and kids, this love and trust will see you through. Not to take the job probably means throwing away a life changing opportunity. Nothing puts a strain on marital life like financial pressures, if you are able to solve this, all other things would fall in place. You have to appreciate the fact that your family's separation is for a while, i do hope soon and very soon, your family would become united again. As for me, my entire family is now with me in UK. When i wanted to leave them behind however, lots of gossip were flying around with some saying i was hearthless. The question to ask is, how may of them would have provided for my family if i had chosen to stay behind. Goodluck and may God help you reach the right decision. |

Boy wonda, If you intend coming to UK to study for 'A' level as an international student, you will pay international student fees of between £6000-£7000 depending on the school. The friend you referred to probably has the status of a Work-permit or HSMP visa dependant. In which case, he or she can study A level without paying fees. Hope this satisfy your query. My 18year old daughter is studying her A levels and another one starting in September. |

MT, You totally misunderstood my post. I did not mention anywhere that Nigeria is not a good place to invest. All i said was that you get your strategy right so that you do not end up running back after relocating to nigeria. I am a strong believer in the Nigerian economy, i said it in one of my earlier post that there are lots of opportunities in nigeria. If this was not the case, i would not have invested close to N30m in naija. |

Ijogbon, I advise you not to relocate to nigeria because you have either N2M or N5M to invest. I know that the amount of capital you require will depend on a number of factors like what you already have on ground and what type of business you intend to do. You have to be advised however to do your homework properly. A lot of people had relocated only to find themselves running back after few months. |

Sorry, i do not know the current rates as i presently reside in the UK. All i can say is that i did the business before and hope to return to it soon. In addition to hiring out plants i had a company that repaired earth moving equipment for government ministries and private firms. Let me give you a scenario, a government caterpillar had been parked for many years, you are invited to effect repairs and replace 'bad' parts. You quote N500,000 for repairs based on your assessment and the information given by the staff of government department. One week later, you arrive to start work on the project, install a battery on the caterpillar and suprise, suprise the machine roars to life. I tell you the truth, you get this everytime on this job. |

This line of business is very, very, very lucrative. I am saying this because its something i have done before. You do not need to be well connected to make it, if you are, it helps. The reason why i said this is because a large percentage of roads in nigeria are maintained by communities and individuals. Most businesses have to provide infrastructures and this includes road maintainance. Even if you dont get public sector patronage you will get patronage from private sector. Do your homework and go for it, its one of the most viable ventures in nigeria. |

There is competition in most businesses anyway. The fact that many people already own schools does not necessarily mean you cannot succeed. You must however have a unique selling point that will differentiate you from others. 1 Like |

Hello, My advise to you is to get to UK, do either business or paid employment, get your residency, raise some capital and do business in Nigeria. Thats where the money is not the UK. If you are not careful in UK, you will soon start counting 15-20years without much to show except enlarging the purse of her majestys inland revenue. Unfortunately many people living abroad tend to believe they are making money, but i tell you the truth Nigeria is the place to make money once you have some reasonable capital. Goodluck |

Hello Guys, Can someone kindly offer some advise. I have a guesthouse in Ilorin which is not doing to well at the moment. Our facilities are fairly standard and its a decent place. A friend suggested i set up internet connectivity and believes this would make a big difference. Apart from the cost of setting this up, i will need to pay at least N15000 monthly subscription. Does anybody out there believe internet can be a pull factor for customers in a guest house?, please advise. |
