Science/TechnologyUS Generates 66 Gigawatts From Wind Energy. by Trustgt(op): 7:59pm On Aug 11, 2015
The Obama administration’s Clean Power Plan, released last week, requires the country to use a lot more renewable energy by the year 2030 — and a lot less coal. And right on time, two new reports published Monday by the Department of Energy find that one key renewable sector — wind — is booming, a development that can only help matters when it comes to reducing carbon emissions.
The reports being released — including the 2014 Wind Technologies Market Report, published by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory — suggest that wind is being installed at a rapid rate, that its costs are plummeting, that its technologies are advancing, and that it is creating a growing number of jobs to boot.
Wind energy in the U.S. is now at 66 gigawatts of installed capacity, according to the report — providing roughly 5 percent of total U.S. electricity demand. 66 gigawatts is enough electricity to power 17.5 million homes (a gigawatt is a billion watts). And, says Jose Zayas, who heads the wind and water power technologies office at the Energy Department’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, 13 more gigawatts are now “in the construction phase” and set to come online by 2016.
For reference, in 2012, the U.S. had 1063 gigawatts of total installed electricity capacity, according to the Energy Information Administration.
“It really dispels some of the past myths that you cannot have significant amounts of wind energy in the system — a variable source in the system — without really affecting the overall efficiency,” says Zayas.
In the meantime, wind now provides 73,000 jobs, the new report finds. And most striking, it found that the wholesale cost of wind energy — bought under a “power purchasing agreement,” or PPA, in which a utility or company buys power from a wind farm under a long term contract — is now just 2.35 cents per kilowatt hour. That’s the lowest it has ever been.
“At 2.35 cents per kilowatt hour, wind is cheaper than the average price of wholesale electricity in many parts of the country,” says Ryan Wiser of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, a lead author of the new report.
Granted, it’s important to note that costs would not be so low without the wind production tax credit, or PTC, which covers wind projects that began by the close of 2014. Still, it’s impressive.
This may help explain why of late, companies ranging from Google to Yahoo to Microsoft have been entering into power purchase agreements with wind farms to help power their energy hungry data centers.
And even as costs decline, a key technology trend is helping further advance the sector. Simply put, wind turbines are getting taller, as well as bigger overall.
So-called “hub heights” — the level of the turbine’s central rotor hub above the ground — have increased to an average of 82.7 meters for new turbine installations, which is nearly 50 percent higher than in 1998-1999. Meanwhile, the diameter of wind rotors has increased dramatically too — newly installed turbines averaged a rotor diameter of 99.4 meters in 2014, an over 100 percent increase in size since 1998-1999.
Both of these trends increase the amount of electricity that can be generated from a given wind turbine, since there is more energy to be captured higher in the air (due to higher wind speeds), and since bigger rotors can also generate “more power at lower wind speeds,” as DOE explains.
“We want the largest rotor possible on the machine, and eventually, we want to go to higher elevation,” says the Energy Department’s Jose Zayas. Ultimately, wind turbines with hub heights as high as 140 meters could open up the possibility of wind energy in across the 50 United States, DOE has previously reported.

PoliticsFashola Bags International Award by Trustgt(op): 3:33am On Apr 24, 2015
A global conflict prevention organisation, International Crisis Group, has named the Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Fashola, as one of seven outstanding personalities worldwide, to be honoured with its annual awards for 2015.

The 2015 awards will be presented at a gala in New York on 26 October, to commemorate the 20 years anniversary of the group.

A statement on Thursday by the group said Fashola was being conferred with the Stephen Solarz Award “for his commitment to resolving social, economic and security challenges in one of the world’s most challenging urban environments”.

Other awardees include Sir Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Group and former United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Sadako Ogata, among others.

Announcing this year’s awards at the ICG’s headquarters in Brussels, the organisation’s President, Jean-Marie Guéhenno, said, “Each award goes to a pioneer of peace, to a relentless fighter for the improvement of people’s lives, to someone who has built bridges, believed in change and mobilised others in the name of justice.”

Previous recipients of the group’s awards have included former US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton; former Brazilian President, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva; Liberian President, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, among others.

The 15 Most Livable Cities In The U.S.
1 of 15
No. 1 San Francisco, California
No. 1 San Francisco, California
Overall global rank: 27 (tie)
Data taken from the Mercer 2015 Quality of Living rankings.
Vienna, Austria, is the most livable city on earth, providing stability and opportunity to expatriates and their employers, according to the 2015 Quality of Living survey released this week by global consultancy Mercer.

Mercer performs this survey each year for the primary purpose of helping multinational companies determine compensation packages for employees on international assignments. Cities are evaluated across 39 metrics in 10 groups, including “political and social environment,” “economic environment,” “medical and health considerations,” “schools and education,” “consumer goods,” and “housing.”

“Taking a short- or long-term work assignment in a new country is both an exciting and challenging experience for employees and their families,” said Slagin Parakatil, Principal at Mercer, in a statement. “Cultures, societies, and comparatively different climates, as well as political instability, high crime rates, and poor infrastructure can be difficult to navigate and settle down in for employees and their families.”

Parakatil also noted the continued rise of “second-tier emerging cities,” those that are making particular efforts to draw foreign companies by, for example, increased investment in infrastructure.

In addition to Vienna, which maintains its spot atop the list, Western European cities dominate the upper tier of this ranking of 230 cities, providing tranquil landscapes for expats and their employers, despite, according to the report, “concerns about economic growth.” Zurich, Switzerland, comes in second, Munich, takes fourth place, followed by fellow German cities Düsseldorf and Frankfurt. Geneva, Switzerland, and Copenhagen, Denmark, take places eight and nine.

Vienna, Austria, is 2015's most livable city on earth.

PoliticsSpain Rally: Podemos Holds Madrid Mass 'march For Change' by Trustgt(op): 7:52pm On Feb 01, 2015
31 January 2015

Tens of thousands of people have massed in central Madrid for a rally organised by radical Spanish leftists Podemos.

The "March for Change" is one of the party's first outdoor mass rallies, as it looks to build on the recent victory of its close allies Syriza in Greece.

Podemos leader Pablo Iglesias told the crowd a "wind of change" was starting to blow through Europe

Podemos has surged ahead in opinion polls, and has vowed to write off part of Spain's debt if it comes to power.

The BBC's Tom Burridge in Madrid says that there has been an impressive turnout and a carnival atmosphere at the rally.

Several of Madrid's main avenues became a sea of people and purple, the party's colour, he says, after its supporters travelled from all over Spain.

'We dream'

Marching from Madrid city hall to the central Puerta del Sol square, protesters shouted "Si, Podemos!", meaning "Yes, we can".

Broadcaster TVE reported that hundreds of thousands were at the demonstration, but there was no official tally.

"The wind of change is starting to blow in Europe," Mr Iglesias said, addressing supporters in Greek and Spanish at the start of the rally.

Pablo Iglesias (C) said people with serious dreams could change things

The Podemos march takes place amid public anger over spending cuts and allegations of political corruption
The party is hoping to build on Syriza's recent successes in Greece
"We dream but we take our dream seriously. More has been done in Greece in six days than many governments did in years."

Protesters are parading in the same streets that over the past six years have seen many other gatherings against financial crisis cutbacks imposed by successive governments.

One marcher, Jose Maria Jacobo, told Reuters news agency that people had to fight back against the political class.

"It is the only way..., to kick out all of those politicians who are taking everything from us. They even try to take our dignity away from us. But that they won't take that from us," he said.

But speaking in Barcelona, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said Podemos had no chance of winning elections.

"I don't accept the gloomy Spain which some want to portray because they think that by doing so they will replace those who are governing and have had to face the most difficult crisis in decades. They will not succeed," he said.

Uncompromising message

Many Spaniards are enraged over reports of political corruption and public spending cuts implemented by Mr Rajoy's People's Party and before that by the Socialists.

The two big traditional parties have described the party - less than a year old and whose names translates as "we can" - as populist.

Our correspondent says that since Podemos stormed onto the political scene in last May's European elections, it has moved from strength to strength with its uncompromising message against austerity and corruption.

But both left-wing and right-wing media have criticised Podemos, accusing it of having ties with Venezuela's left-wing leaders and alleging financial misconduct by some of its senior members.

The party's leaders have in response promised to publish their tax returns, with Mr Iglesias remaining defiant.

"In the face of their hatred, we smile," is one of his regular pronouncements, according to the AFP news agency. After the Syriza triumph in the Greek elections he said that "hope had been born".

Spain has now officially come out of recession but nearly one in four workers remains unemployed.

Last year was the first time there has been full-year economic growth in the country since 2008, when a property bubble burst, putting millions of people out of work and pushing the country to the brink of a bail-out.

PoliticsProfessionals In Lagos Stand-up For Ambode by Trustgt(op): 4:18am On Feb 01, 2015
Professionals in Lagos Stand-up for Ambode
February 1, 2015Premium Times

Akinwunmi Ambode

A coalition of professionals, civil society advocacy groups, artisans and market people has come together to lend support to sustained excellence in governance in Lagos State.
According to Jide Ayobolu, Chairman, Editorial Board, Enterprise Africa Magazine, who spoke on behalf of the group, “We Stand for Lagos”, after a meeting on Saturday January 31, the collective was formed to champion informed and issues-based dialogue/conversation in Nigeria, and – importantly – Lagos State, particularly at this period of the jostle for political offices in the country.
This, he said, is targeted towards a repositioning of issues at the heart of our electoral competitive process and political choice, and as a way of encouraging Nigerians to speak wisely with their votes in the effort to enthrone quality leadership in the polity.
The coalition claims to have thoughtfully come to the decision to stand up for and endorse Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, the gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Lagos State, due to the fact that “people might be swayed to vote for the wrong reasons”, as put by Ayobolu.
Hence, “We Stand for Lagos” “ has decided to assist many other Lagosians in making evidence-based choice, and realizing that our commonwealth is best protected and collective welfare best guaranteed by a tradition of truly tested and trusted leadership. As such, our decision is to speak up and defend what we are convinced is in the best interest of most stakeholders in Lagos State.”
Furthermore, Jide Ayobolu pointed out that “good governance is not about having a wish-list or making hollow promises of what to expect when in office, which is just about sound bites that might not be feasible, but it is about understanding the system, and extending on it by executing plans that are well thought out within the ambit of available resources.”
For him and the group, “Lagos needs a leader who knows his onion and will hit the ground running, not a person who will first waste time in understanding what the system truly entails before struggling to match his plans with the reality on the ground.”
Equally, the group believes that effective leadership is not about showmanship or oration, otherwise comic merchants would have risen to statesmen.
Another member of the group, Nerus Ekezie, urged Lagosians to use their votes to wisely determine their fate, as their voters’ cards are an instrument of ratifying the best possible choice and taking a stand on the direction of their future in the long run, and within the next four years, on the short haul.
He more so stressed his belief in the continuity of progressive governance, represented by APC in the State, as the best option for Africa’s rainbow ‘nation’ and sixth largest economy.
In the words of the coalition, “We stand for a Lagos that has been growing steadily and progressively since the return of democracy to Nigeria in 1999; a Lagos in which a succession of good administrations and leadership has tipped the human development index upwards, promoted an increase in jobs and livelihoods, offered opportunities and rewards for the keen and steadfast; and a Lagos that continues to guarantee the security, peace and well-being of its people, while advancing on their qualities-of-life and safeguarding their continuous prosperity.”
Also the coalition’s “vision is to see the deepening of a Lagos that truly works as a Centre of Excellence in all respects, and which keeps supporting the legitimate aspirations of people and businesses to the fullness of their potentials. And we are prepared to achieve this through partnership with all relevant stakeholders and institutions, for the continuous attainment of a Lagos hinged on good governance, accountability, effective leadership, service delivery, and equal opportunities for all.”
Shina Loremikan, a member of the “We Stand for Lagos” collective, describes the group’s support for Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode of the APC noting that, “by their fruits are they known. He is part of those who enabled the progressive template of government that has taken Lagos this far, as a seasoned and entrusted erstwhile Accountant General of the State.”
“We Stand for Lagos”’ resolution to support the continuity of APC administrations in Lagos is borne of its observation of good governance at close quarters, because “if 16 years of governance have taken Lagos out of the rot and woods of three decades to become one of the six largest and steadily growing economies on the African continent, with a huge educated and skilled citizenry, one of the highest school completion rates in Nigeria, an expanding mean household income, as well as an enlarging middle class, in addition to many other positives, then we are convinced that the consolidation of this over another progressive governance cycle can only deepen the success story in a fundamental way.”

Online enthusiasts, sarcastically referred to as internet rats, who are opposed to the presidential bid of the All Progressives Congress (APC) flag bearer, Muhammadu Buhari, have refused to leave his daughter, Miss Zahra Buhari, out of their campaign.
This afternoon, a popular gossip blogger and a news portal published a false report which suggested that the retired general’s daughter was intimidated into deleting her twitter account by alleged criticisms Nigerians who are against her father’s political ambition poured on her few hours after she tweeted about her father.
Captioned: “Lol. You Nigerians have chased Buhari’s daughter out of Twitter”, the blogger wrote: “Guess she couldn’t take it anymore and decided to delete her account or maybe she was made to? She used to tweet from Zahra3_ but the page no longer exists as at the time of this report, ” the top gossip blogger was quoted.
However, DAILY POST checks put a lie to the report as Miss Buhari’s twitter account; “Miss zahra #buhari @VictorLuther1” was found to be very much active. She actually tweeted: “boss leave them alone, we will use our finger to change them.2015 GEJ must GO”#ChangeIsHere” five minutes to the time this report was filed. 6 things you should always include on your CV

By Jacquelyn Smith

Dec 15 2014

Capturing someone’s attention and making a great first impression in just six seconds is no easy feat. Now, imagine trying to do this without ever meeting that person.

Sounds impossible, right?

Well, if you’re a job seeker who submits an outstanding résumé that tells your “career story” in a succinct, easy-to-follow way, it’s actually very achievable.

To ensure your résumé stands out (for the right reasons), there are a few things you’ll want to avoid and some you’ll definitely want to include, says Tina Nicolai, executive career coach and founder of Résumé Writers’ Ink. “Basically employers want to see where candidates have earned, learned, and contributed.”

Whether to include things like an objective statement, list of skills, and education will depend on your level of experience and industry — but here are six simple things you should always include on your résumé, no matter what:

Contact information.

This may seem obvious, but candidates sometimes forget to include basic information like their email address, or they bury it at the bottom. “Include your name, phone number, email, and URL to your LinkedIn profile right at the top of the page,” Nicolai says. “And you don’t need to include your home address.”

Executive résumé writer Mary Elizabeth Bradford suggests including just one phone number and email address. “Some people will include their home and cell numbers, for example — but I find multiple contact choices to be confusing. Make it easy for your reader to understand how to contact you.”

Keywords from the job posting.

You’ll want to include (without making it look like you did a lot of copying and pasting) some keywords and phrases from the job posting. This is especially important if the employer uses a résumé-scanning system.

Accomplishments and achievements.

Employers need to know what you’ve done to contribute to the growth of your department, team, and company to determine whether your strengths align with the needs and responsibilities of their company and the job opening, Nicolai says.

Your career narrative.

“No matter if you are constructing a functional résumé or a chronological résumé, some kind of professional history is critical,” Bradford says. “But make sure your story makes for a more interesting read.”

Metrics.

“Employers need numbers to be able to fully evaluate the scope of your bandwidth,” Nicolai says. “No position is exempt from measuring results. And metrics help employers determine if a person is capable of leading a team, managing clients, or growing the business.”

Metrics are also a great way to back up your achievements.

Relevant URLs.

Depending on the field or position you’re applying for, it may be useful to include links to your work (articles you’ve written, websites you’ve designed, photographs you’ve taken, etc.).

“Candidates need to show up on paper as though they have already been screened by a recruiter,” Nicolai says. “Today, recruiters and gatekeepers are stretched to the gills and do not have the time to conduct lengthy initial phone screens to understand detailed specific information.”

Knowing that, your goal should be to include enough information using as few words as possible, Bradford says. “Less is more in most cases, and writing ‘too much’ is generally the most common mistake I see. You don’t want key attributes getting lost in a sea of information just because you have ‘seen and done it all from the bottom up.'”

Use your ideal career position as your touchtone and write to that, she suggests. “Accentuate the skills, abilities, metrics, and leadership abilities that make the best case for you being in that next position, and minimize the rest.”
