Lagos PDP chieftains defect to APC
November 30, 2014 by Agency Report 29 Comments

A former Lagos State Deputy Governor, Rafiu Jafojo, and some other chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party in Lagos on Saturday defected to the All Progressives Congress.

The News Agency of Nigeria reported that others who defected included former Lagos State Chairman, Elders Council of PDP, Dr. Oluyomi Finnih, and former state secretary of the party, Tunde Daramola.

The declaration of the new members was held at the APC secretariat on Acme Road, Lagos.

Welcoming the new members, the state chairman of APC, Chief Henry Ajomale, said they had made a good decision. He promised that the party would be fair to them.

Finnih, who spoke on behalf of the new members, said the defectors had come for the unity of the party and not to divide it.

“We took the bold decision because we see the party as a prosperous party. We defected based on the lack of internal democracy in the PDP and our aim is winning the presidential election by APC,” he said.

The state Governor, Babatunde Fashola, said that the party was glad to accommodate the new members.

Fashola urged them to ensure that the party’s interest was placed above individual interest, saying that there would be a level-playing ground.

Meanwhile, the state chapter of PDP described the defection of Finnih and his group to the APC as a welcome development.

The PDP Publicity Secretary, Gani Taofik, told NAN, “Finnih and his group have long been out of PDP. The defection ceremony today is just a charade for people who have long left our fold.

“Finnih and his group had always worked against the PDP even when they were our members. Their roles of playing moles and fifth columnists in our party have been extinguished. They had no choice but to be part and parcel of the APC, their real party.”

He advised other members of the party who were not willing to abide by its rules to exit or risk being disciplined.

Taofik said, “The Lagos PDP can no longer tolerate insubordination. It is no longer business as usual. We want to enforce party discipline to the letter.”

He, however, assured PDP’s loyal members that the party would emerge victorious in the 2015 general elections.

Defection: S’West APC panel meets over Osoba, others

Members of the South-West Committee of the All Progressives Congress met on Thursday on how to make a former Governor of Ogun State, Olusegun Osoba, the embattled Deputy Governor, Segun Adesegun, and others have a rethink on their defection to the Social Democratic Party.

The APC National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed, who made this known in a telephone interview with one of our correspondents, said the committee headed by former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, has an ex-Minister of Information, Tony Momoh, as one of its members.

Mohammed neither gave the names of other members of the truce panel nor stated where the meeting took place.

He said, “We believe that the grievances are not irreconcilable and we are redoubling our efforts to bring them back. What we share in common with them is much more than the areas of disagreement.

“There’s nothing absolutely fundamental that cannot be reconciled. The party’s South-West committee on reconciliation is in a strategic meeting right now as I speak with you to ensure that the family remains one.

“We will concentrate efforts on bringing the major players into accord. The committee has the mandate to get to the root cause of the disagreement and achieve total reconciliation.”

It was gathered from a reliable member of the APC that the truce committee would meet soon with Osoba, Adesegun and others who joined the SDP, a party led by a former Presidential candidate of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party.

The other APC members that defected are Senators Adegbenga Kaka, Ghenga Obadara and Akin Odunsi, who represent Ogun East, Ogun Central and Ogun West respectively.

The defected members of the House of Representatives are Kunle Adeyemi, Babatunde Olabode, Olumide Osoba, Abiodun Abudu and Bukunola Buraimo.

Earlier on Thursday, Mohammed, in a terse statement expressed the hope that the defectors would reconsider their decision and beat a quick retreat.

He also pointed out that the defection would not affect the overall chances of the party in the forthcoming polls in Ogun State.

Mohammed added that the party was shocked by the defection because it came at a time efforts were ongoing to reconcile all its aggrieved members in the state.

He said, ‘’Yes, the defection of some our members will create some challenges for our party, but we will go back to the drawing board to restrategise and redouble our efforts to retain the state in 2015.

‘’Every member of our party is important to its overall success, but none is more important than the party. Against this background, no member can hold the party to ransom.’’

The APC spokesman said it was a mere fallacy for anyone to conclude that the defection of some members, irrespective of their importance, would dramatically alter the chances of the party in 2015.

He therefore urged the APC members in the state not to lose any sleep over the latest development.

A member of the House of Representatives, Kehinde Odeneye, who was reported to have also defected, said he was still in the APC.

Odeneye said, “Contrary to reports that I have defected to the SDP, I am still a bona fide and committed member of the APC and have not at any time defected or expressed the intention of defecting to any other political party.”

Odeneye said he was approached by those who defected to the SDP but he declined on the basis of principles.

“When they were about to defect, they approached me but I refused because I don’t believe in jumping from one party to another.”

The state publicity secretary of the APC, Sola Lawal, has however said the party cannot take any action yet against Adesegun since he has not formally defected to the SDP.

“I cannot tell you the sanction yet; let us wait until he finally defects,’’ Lawal said in a telephone interview with one of our correspondents.

He said, “We are not aware of the move the deputy governor is making, either to defect to another party or not. At the party level, there is no document to show that he has left the APC. Even Chief Osoba has not disclosed where he’s going.”

A member of the assembly, Remmy Hassan, told our correspondent in the state that it would be difficult for the 26 -member House of Assembly to impeach Adesegun.

The House is factionalised into 13 members loyal to Governor Ibikunle Amosun and the other 13 making up the opposition.

Hassan, who is the Leader of the opposition lawmakers, said they were patiently waiting for any attempt to impeach the deputy governor.

He said, “It will be practically difficult to impeach the deputy governor because there is no constitutional breach. However, everybody is awake even while asleep.

“We have 13 members each on both sides. But the other 13 loyal to the governor are at a disadvantage, because the Speaker, Suraj Adekunbi, who is on their side cannot not vote. He only presides.”

Efforts to speak with Adekunbi proved abortive as his telephone line was unreachable.

In Abuja, Chief Olu Falae described the defection of Osoba and others to the SDP as a welcome development.

He said, “I welcome all Nigerians to join this party from councillors to President because this party, although may not control the Federal Government, it is a party with a clear people- oriented ideology.

“It is a party which philosophy is zero tolerance for corruption. It makes the people the central object of its endeavour. Any party that is not doing all these is not a party.

“I hope all Nigerians will join this party so that the country could be a different nation. The country needs to be changed. Change is absolutely necessary.”

The former presidential aspirant also said he had consulted with his lawyer to interpret what the law says if a politician holding a public office dumps his party for another party.

“I have consulted a lawyer who told me that the legal interpretation is that the law only requires legislators to resign if they change their political affiliation. That is what I was told, I am not a lawyer. The lawyers will advise us as a party. We are law-abiding. It is whatever the law says that we will do.”

Asked what his party would do if the APC moved to impeach Adesegun , Falae said, “that would amount to being speculative.”

He said, “The election is next year February. I don’t think it is a major issue for now. The Deputy Governor may decide to resign or decide to stay depending on what the lawyers advise him to do.”

The former governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi has tendered his resignation letter as leader of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, and the chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees, BoT.

In a letter addressed to the National Secretary of the party and submitted in the party’s Abuja office yesterday, Obi said he was resigning as leader and BoT chairman into which he was appointed in January

PETER OBI: I have no ambition to go to senate
2014 by the National Executive Council of the party in Awka.

According to him, the appointment was yet to be ratified by a Convention of the party as stipulated by the constitution several months after it was made.

Obi also cited family and personal reasons, but did not give details.

He however wished the party well in her future endeavours, reiterating the fact that he remains an ordinary APGA member.

The former Governor was recently denied appointment as a minister by President Goodluck Jonathan because he allegedly refused to defect from APGA to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Obi’s media aide, Mr. Valentine Obienyem confirmed the development yesterday.

His words: “ If you recall, my boss was nominated the leader of the party and the chairman, Board of Trustees in January.

“The nomination was yet to be ratified by a Convention of the party at the time he submitted his letter of resignation.

“Since the convention will take place next year, people have found it convenient to blame him for the woes of the party, saying that he had failed to intervene on matters affecting the party, not knowing that without ratification of his nomination, he had no platform under which to intervene. Obienyem said that his boss remained an APGA member, and would continue to support the party at all times.

Only recently, four members of the party in the House of Representatives resigned their membership and declared for the PDP.

Technology MarketIndian Engineers Design Electric Anti-rape Bra by Trustgt(op): 8:29pm On Jul 25, 2014
Indian engineers design electric anti-rape bra
A group of engineers in India have designed an electric bra as a rape defense system. The lingerie - capable of causing severe burns - is called Society Harnessing Equipment (SHE).

The horrific gang-rape and murder of a medical student in New Delhi in December 2012 caused a crisis in India. People turned out in the tens of thousands across the country to voice their shock, and lawmakers finally passed stringent new anti-rape legislation. It was also a tipping point for 22-year-old engineering student Manisha Mohan - so decided to invent an unusual new defense system - an electric bra.
Along with two fellow students, Manisha conducted surveys and worked on several models before coming up with a working prototype of the lingerie that bites back. "I started working with people who were related to electronics, brainstormed and started evolving it," she told DW. "It took it to another level when we got a lot of recognition worldwide … we got a lot of feedback."
SHE-power
The engineer is putting the final touches to the lingerie, called Society Harnessing Equipment (SHE) before it becomes commercially available. She won't saying when exactly it will enter the market, but it is believed to be very soon.

The bra can deliver a 3,800-volt zap
The bra contains a pressure sensor connected to an electric circuit that can generate a serious shock - 3,800 kilo-volts, to be exact - severe enough to burn a potential rapist. The moment its pressure sensors get activated, a built-in GPS also alerts the police.
"The bra is equipped with electronic equipment inside a pocket with a bi-layer fabric," she said. "The pocket insulates the woman and is water-proofed… so we are trying to incorporate all the electronics inside it with pressure sensors that sense the amount of pressure over the woman's bosom."
The technology looks simple. The pressure sensor has been calibrated for squeeze, pinch and grab - and the force applied in a simple hug does not activate the device. There is also a switch so the woman can put it on by herself when in a dangerous location.
Safe - and comfortable
Those who have worn the bra say it is comfortable, and the feedback has generally been good. "I think the bra is going to be extremely helpful because both women and girls will be able to roam around more confidently in the big cities during odd hours," Revathi, a New Delhi college student, told DW.
Manisha also thinks the bra will be comfortable. "Since it is going to be paper-like and most of garments worn by women are padded, I don't think it is going to be that difficult for a woman to wear," she said. Manisha has been selected for the prestigious Innovation Scholars In-Residence, a 20-day program hosted by Indian President Pranab Mukherjee at the presidential palace. It's a program that allows innovators to showcase their talents.

Manisha says the bra is both safe and comfortable
The commercial release of the lingerie could not have come at a more appropriate time, with reports of crimes against women in India - including rape, murder, abduction, and molestation - increased by over 25 percent in 2013 compared to the previous year.
The latest national crime figures say 309,546 crimes against women were reported to the police last year, compared to 244,270 in 2012. The bra may not actually drive down sexual attacks against women in India's rural areas, where a majority of crimes take place, but this invention is still welcome as a safety shield.

A former Deputy Governor of Lagos, Mr. Femi Pedro, on Sunday, formally declared his membership of the All Progressives Congress.
In a statement to THE PUNCH, signed by his Special Assistant on Media and Strategy Lanre Anjolaiya, Pedro and the national leadership of the APC were said to share a mutual desire to see Nigeria become great again.
It read, “Our dear country, more than ever before, is in dire need of purposeful leadership committed to leading us out of the woods; and one for which all men of good conscience must join hands.
“Pedro is convinced, beyond any shadow of doubt, that the APC offers that veritable platform to put Nigeria back along the path of glory and prosperity. For this reason, I am delighted to announce that Pedro has formally declared for the APC.
“He left the PDP with his teeming supporters and party stalwarts across the South West to partner with the party of the progressives – APC – towards the attainment of these noble objectives.”
Anjolaiya described the task of nation building as one though that came with challenges and at great personal costs, must be fulfilled by genuine patriots.

By SaharaReporters, New York
Retired Admiral Mike Okhai Akhigbe, who played several roles in a number of military regimes in Nigeria, passed away today in New York City, SaharaReporters has confirmed.

A source close to the family told our correspondent that Mr. Akhigbe breathed his last at 1.06 p.m. (New York time). He was surrounded by his wife, his children, and their spouses, our source disclosed.

The cause of death was throat cancer, said the source. SaharaReporters learnt that the former military administrator of Ondo and Lagos States first experienced symptoms of his disease in 2010. He was engaged in President Goodluck Jonathan’s campaign at the time, but took a leave to fly to Germany where doctors gave him the grim diagnosis. For three years, he underwent treatment for his cancer in Germany, the UK and the United States of America before finally succumbing to the disease earlier today. Over the last one month, the former naval officer received treatment at the Memorial Sloane Kettering Cancer Hospital in Manhattan. The hospital is one of the top treatment facilities for cancer in the world.

The Nigerian Consulate in New York also confirmed Mr. Akhigbe’s death, adding that they were conferring with the late officer’s family on plans to convey his remains back to Nigeria for burial.

Mr. Akhigbe worked under military regimes led by Ibrahim Babangida, Sani Abacha, and Abdulsalami Abubakar, holding positions at various times as a governor or member of the armed forces ruling council. He rose to become the Chief of General Staff under the Abdulsalami Abubakar regime. He was retired from military service in 1999 just as Olusegun Obasanjo took over power as Nigeria’s elected president.

The late naval officer, who hailed from Edo State, was 67 years old.

PoliticsEx-ondo State Governor, Segun Agagu Is Dead. by Trustgt(op): 4:33am On Sep 14, 2013
Ex-gov Segun Agagu is dead

The immediate past governor of Ondo state, Dr. Olusegun Agagu is dead. He was 65.

He reportedly died on Friday at about 8 pm in his Bodija, Ibadan residence 24 hours after returning from a foreign trip, family sources confirmed last night..

The former governor was said to have been hale and hearty as he showed no sign of sickness before he suddenly slumped and died.

It was gathered that Agagu had travelled to the United States of America (USA) for over three weeks. He returned to the country on Thursday.

His death came as a shock and surprise to many, particularly his political associates and members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.

He was said to have held meetings with members of the party moments before his death.

It was also learnt that the former governor had fixed next Thursday for a general meeting of the party members where he was expected to address them on the position of the state in the crisis rocking the PDP.

Besides, he was said to have held consultations with many party members in Ondo State on the way forward as he was bombarded with calls over the development.

His death also came at a point he was to lead two other elders of the party from the southwest to deliberate and find solutions to the crisis in various states of the region.

Olusegun Kokumo Agagu, born 16 February 1948, was Governor of Ondo State from 29 May 2003 until February 2009.

He commenced his elementary education at St. Luke’s Anglican School, (now known as St. Paul’s Anglican School) Okitipupa, in 1954. In January 1958, he moved to live with his cousin, Edward Fagbohun in Ibadan, where he continued his primary education at Ebenezer African Church School, Oke-Ado, Ibadan. In 1959 he transferred to Kano where he studied at the Ebenezer Methodist School and Baptist Primary School Sabon-Gari, Kano. He then moved back to Ebenezer African Church School, Ibadan where he completed his primary education in 1960. Thereafter, he was in Ibadan Grammar School between January 1961 and 1967 where he passed his West African School Certificate and the Higher School Certificate examinations. He was admitted to the University of Ibadan in 1968 to study Botany but later changed to Geology in which he graduated with a B.Sc. (Hons) degree in Second Class Upper Division, in 1971. As an undergraduate, his academic record was replete with laurels and prizes.

Agagu went to the University of Texas between 1973 and 1974 for his Masters degree in Geology. Returning to Nigeria, he obtained a Ph.D degree in Petroleum Geology from the University of Ibadan in 1978.

Agagu was appointed by President Olusegun Obasanjo as his first minister of Aviation in 1999. On 29 June 2006 President Olusegun Obasanjo commended him for the work he had done leading Ondo State, saying “You have taken time to plan. We have also seen that the execution of the plan is now showing results.”

I therefore advice mr governor to play it cool with the opposition so that his hostilies will not back fire on him when he eventually step down as the governor.
There is always a jinx breaker, it happened for the first time in Ondo state, it would soon happen in Ekiti & Oyo for your information, let stop believing in fictions. Lagos had over 20 governorship aspirants in the last election and Fashola won with a clear figure. Ekiti elections have always be volatile from the beginning, the people just need to learn from the past. This is not even Fayemi, but just a group of over zealous followers.

The group assessment of Fashola performance is based on questionnaires sent out to people and not investigation they carried out and came up with this conclusion, they are not being sincere. If Fashola performance is overblown, then, some state governors are in trouble, when their report sheets are out.

When the whole Nigerians saw her dying, they looked other way, even her brethren, but the Lagos State Govt, that is now labelled anti-Igbo, sponsored her to UK for better care.

Let not forget the good times, because of little mistake.

One love.
PoliticsRe: Documents Show Lagos Informed Anambra Government Before Alleged Deportation by Trustgt(m): 10:52pm On Aug 02, 2013
As some of us might not be happy with this development, the issue of being dropped at the dead of the night should not be the main issue, the journey from Lagos to Anambra takes about 9 hours (the time they must have left Lagos, the condition of Nigerian roads, hold up on the road etc), there is possibility that they might get there in the night.
Governor Obi denying have any knowledge about this re-union is not true from the evidences shown. People have been in Lagos for years without harassment or intimidation. You will be addressed the way you dressed, dress to suit your status, even though, you are not working, nobody would harass you.

The way forward should be the solution to the problem on ground and not threatening brimstone & fire.

One love.
