Your quote about many americans being atheist is a more modern development. The truth is that historically, America was founded and built on Christian principles. Most of Europe and the US were historically christian nations. They became great and powerful nations while they were very much christian nations. Time changes and so do people, if modern Europe and US is more atheistic, that doesn't change their christian history.
