ABUJA — AHEAD his formal declaration for his re - election bid come 2015, President Goodluck Jonathan has pleaded with Nigerians, especially his pro- campaign groups to be patient with him as a decision which would be favourable to them will be taken soon, just as he declared that he will not let Nigerians down. President Goodluck Jonathan with PDP chieftains at the party's rally for August 9 governorship election in Osun State. President Goodluck Jonathan with PDP chieftains President Jonathan at a rally in Abuja tagged, ‘Return Jonathan 2015 Rally,’ organised by House to House Campaign Organisation for Democracy, urged Nigerians to unite against evil activities of the insurgents threatening the corporate existence of the country. Represented at the rally by his Senior Special Assistant on Youths and Students’ Matters, Mr. Jude Imagwe, the President stressed that if unity existed, the country would witness massive growth and general development as that would make it maintain its leadership position in the African continent. He appealed to all and sundry for little time when he would speak on his position regarding the 2015 presidential election. He said: “Nigerians should be patient with me, I will not let the nation down.” He assured that the Federal Government under his administration would provide a level playing field for all political parties to operate ahead of the 2015 general elections as obtained in the previous elections held in Edo, Ondo, Anambra, Ekiti and Osun states with the principle of “one man, one vote, one woman one vote and one youth one vote” being at the centre stage. On the missing Chibok girls and the call by a section of the Northern elders that there would be no general elections without rescuing them, the President who warned against politicising the all important national concern and giving it an ethnic colouration, stressed that all hands were already on deck to ensure that the girls were rescued and brought home alive to their families. Meanwhile, the National Coordinator of House to House Campaign Organisation, Ogidi Ben Bara, who publicly declared President Jonathan wanted for the race in accordance with the yearnings and aspirations of Nigerians, disclosed that the women wing of the campaign organisation had already raised N19.5m for his nomination form. According to him, the amount would be deposited at the Wadata Plaza National Secretariat of the PDP to purchase the nomination form for President Jonathan, adding that he was even at liberty to declare his intention at the comfort zone of his bedroom without coming to the Eagle Square or organising any rally for that. He said that it had become imperative for the President to declare his intention now because Nigerians had waited for too long and would no longer tolerate any further delay. Also speaking, the National Woman Leader of the group, Chief Funmi Nnaji, who urged members to return to their states and place their people on red alert for the declaration of President Jonathan for the race, said, “Once “he declares, be ready to move from one house to another house, from friends to our opposition, from the husband to the wife until every individual joins the moving train to the Eagle Square for the formal inauguration on May 29, 2015.” It will be recalled that the Political Adviser to the President, Prof. Rufai Ahmed Alkali had last week declared that he inherited 3,000 of such campaign organisations demanding that President Jonathan declare his ambition for the 2015 presidential race. Meanwhile, about 3,000 supporters of President Goodluck Jonathan, weekend, stormed the streets of Abuja for a rally and asked the president to declare his intention to seek another tenure in office. The rally, which was organised by former deputy governors of Nigeria, under the auspices of Mass Movement for Goodluck 2015, MMG, followed the inauguration of the group and investiture of its Board of Trustees (BoT) members. Similarly, female members of the Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria, TAN, have handed an ultimatum to President Jonathan to contest the 2015 presidential election. Speaking on behalf of MMG, National Coordinator of the movement, Kenneth Kalu said President Jonathan had performed well and deserved to be re-elected in 2015. www.vanguardngr.com/2014/08/2015-patient-wont-let-jonathan-tells-campaign-groups/ |

Chelsea have reportedly agreed to send Victor Moses on a season-long loan to Stoke City, subject to a medical with the club. The striker spent last season with Liverpool, but only started six matches for Brendan Rodgers 's side, scoring twice. According to The Telegraph, the Nigeria international will have a medical at the Potters' Clayton Wood training ground tomorrow morning after Jose Mourinho approved the move. Stoke had been linked with Oussama Assaidi and Nathan Redmond , but Moses's arrival is expected the end the club's interest in the duo. www.sportsmole.co.uk/football/chelsea/transfer-talk/news/report-moses-to-undergo-stoke-medical_171269.html |

The success story of comedy in Nigeria cannot be complete without the mention of great comedians like Julius Agwu. The Choba-born comedian, actor and musician has joined pantheon of intending gubernatorial aspirants warming up to take the reins of power from Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State. In this chat with Potpourri, the diminutive entertainer talks about his political intent, his career and other things. Excerpts: It is been quite a while; what’s been happening? I am working on a lot of projects at the moment; I am still organising comedy shows. l am currently working on something for my music. I have a band called ‘Reel Laif Band’ and we are performing at the Encomium black and white ball holding this Sunday. The news is going round that you are working at becoming the governor of your state. What is your take on this? Yes, I am working on that project too at the moment. Would you call yourself a politician? I cannot really call myself a politician, but l am someone who prays and wish for things to get better than it is in this country. I believe I can help to achieve what my brother started in Rivers State. It is a known truth that Port Harcourt was the Garden City of this great country, but we lost that glory because of poverty and neglect, coupled with incessant militancy and kidnapping. Governor Amaechi has done well for the State, but we still need good hands after he leaves to continue the good work. If you are not a politician then why do you want to be the governor of Rivers State? Becoming the governor of Rivers State was not something that came up overnight. It was not on my radar back then. The people of Rivers State in the Diaspora and those in the State have been clamouring for me to come out as an aspirant. They believe I have what it takes to go for it. It just dawned on me that I indeed have what it takes. I have given it a serious thought and have given in to their pressure. These people who have been bothering you, would they sponsor your election, if yes, who are they? Yes, they will. But I do not want to disclose their names for security reasons. Will you use a political party at the end of the day? Yes, we shall, eventually, but I do not want to unveil that now. In your future party, do you think an aspirant from your party will be going for the presidency? Yes, when the time comes it will be revealed. How is the comedy business these days? Comedy business is going well. You know it’s one of the biggest businesses in Nigeria now as it helps to relax our tensed nerves. People who laugh a lot tend to live longer. Comedy is so important that even people outside the shores of Nigeria know about it before us. Obasanjo was someone who practiced it while he was in power. What else do you have up your sleeve? I have a studio and I also own a construction company. www.vanguardngr.com/2014/08/want-next-governor-rivers-julius-agwu/

The Joint Health Sector Union has taken the Nigeria Medical Association tocourt for going on strike, claiming that the NMA lacks the constitutional right todo so.Joined in the suit are the Federal Ministry of Health, the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity, the Registrarof trade unions, and the Attorney-General of the Federation.Speaking at a press conference called by JOHESU in Ibadan on Wednesday, the General Secretary of the Senior StaffAssociation of Universities, Teaching Hospitals, Research Institutes and Associated Institutions, Moshood Akinade, said the doctors acted in an unprofessional manner by their refusal to treat patients, adding that COHESU has challenged the action of the doctors in court.Among other things, COHESU is challenging the constitutional rights of NMA to call for a strike particularly when it is not a legally registered trade union.“We have presented eight points in courtwhich will show that NMA is acting unconstitutionally when the court rules. Their strike is illegal and all what the doctors want is to scuttle the effort and agreement that JOHESU has reached with the Federal Government. The doctors are punishing the masses and denying them the right to medical care in government hospitals. The patients can institute a joint action against the doctors if they wish to fight back,” Akinade said. He went further to list some of the demands that JOHESU wanted the court to declare, saying “NMA and its incorporated trustees as well as associates and allies like Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria and Association of Resident Doctors are not trade union organisations so they have no legal rights to declare a strike.“They also don’t have the legal right to disrupt the career progression of members of COHESU in teaching hospitals, general hospitals, clinics, federal medical centres and state institutions where our members are employees.“We want the court to declare their action null and void because only registered trade union organisations can declare a trade dispute, down tool, embark on a strike or a protest. We also seek an order of the court deeming the industrial action embarked upon by the doctors since July 1, 2014 as illegal, unconstitutional, unprofessional and ultra vires.”JOHESU alleged that NMA was working against its members by making demands that would limit the career peak to which non-doctors could reach in the health sector and that the doctors were the biggest beneficiaries of the strike because patients now patronise their hospitals. http://www.punchng.com/news/johesu-sues-nma-says-doctors-strike-illegal/ |
