The title winning tactician has expressed his disappointment over his inability to access his salaries in more than two years as a national team coach. Nigeria senior women's national team head coach Edwin Okon says he is yet to receive any salary since he was engaged 25 months ago. Okon, who is also the head coach of Rivers Angels of Port Harcourt, led the Super Falcons to emerge champions for the seventh time at the African Women Championship in Namibia on Saturday evening. He replaced Kadiri Ikhana, who resigned after Super Falcons failed to make the last three at the 2012 African Women Championship in Equatorial Guinea, after he steered the Falconets to a fourth-place finish at the 2012 Fifa U20 Women's World Cup in Japan. Okon lamented the unfair treatment suffered in the hands of his employers after not getting a dime since that tournament ended. "Since August 2012 when I led the Falconets to the World Cup where we came fourth, up till today, I'm yet to get a dime as salary from the NFF," he told media. "Every time I go to the office to complain, they will say there is no money. “At a time I learned that the Federal Government gave the federation some money to pay [former men's senior team coach Stephen] Keshi and other national team coaches, but up till today my story is still the same," he concluded. Okon’s ladies successfully redeemed the image of the country at the biennial eight-nation tournament where they defeated Cameroon 2-0 and also qualified for the 2015 Fifa Women's World Cup in Canada. Nigeria alongside neighbours Cameroon and Cote d'Ivoire will represent Africa at the World Cup. m.goal.com/x/en-ng/news/5492531 |

The Lagos State Police Command on Tuesday paraded the two dogs that attacked four-year-old Omonigho Abraham in the Igando area of the state. The police, while parading the two German shepherd dogs at its headquarters in Ikeja, added that the dogs had been examined and had been found to be disease-free. The Commissioner of Police, Cornelius Aderanti, said it was important to parade the dogs so that the public would be convinced that the dogs were still in police custody, and had not been released as was being rumoured. He, however, said only a court of law could decide whether the two dogs-which devoured the scalp of the little boy-would be killed or not. He said, “We have brought the dogs out so that the public would know that they are still in police custody. They have been examined and they show no negative trait. It is only the court that will decide what happens to them. The police cannot decide to kill the dogs.” PUNCH Metro had reported on Tuesday, October 21, that the victim, Omonigho, had asked the police and the government to ensure that the dogs which almost took his life be killed. It was reported that Omonigho, who was now in the Burns and Plastic Wards of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja still had a bandaged head and some scars on his face. On Tuesday at the police command, a veterinary police officer, Yahaya Usman, also told journalists that the medical report showed the dogs had no infection. He said, “Initially, we quarantined the dogs and wanted to find out whether the dogs had any disease or not. That was the first step taken by the police. The dogs were under our watch for weeks. “So far, they have not shown any negative trait. The medical history shows that they don’t have rabies or the Ebola Virus Disease. The dogs are with us, and only the court will determine what happens to them.” Meanwhile, the victim’s father, Mr. Odiah Abraham, said apart from the attack on his son, the dogs had also terrorised other residents. He said three days prior to his son’s attack, the dogs had chased a neighbour and residents had thereafter warned the dog owner. He said, “Three days to the incident, a woman who lives in the neighbourhood had gone downstairs to spread her clothes on the line. She had left and was approaching her room when the dogs broke out of their cage and pursued her. She was just lucky that she was close to her room, if not they would have bitten her. “She ran in and shut the door against herself. The dogs stood at the gate for some time and when they saw she did not open, they ran back to their cage. My wife met the dog’s owner and told him to do something about the dogs, as there were little children within the neighbourhood, but he just ignored the warning.” However, the owner of the dogs, Mr. Stanley Wesley, has been arraigned in court for negligence but has been granted bail. www.punchng.com/news/police-parade-dogs-that-attacked-four-year-old-boy-2/

A Ugandan doctor suspected to be suffering from Ebola disease has arrived in Frankfurt from Sierra Leone for treatment in the city’s University Hospital, a German government official has said. Health Minister of German state, Hesse, Stefan Gruettner, who disclosed this to journalists in Wiesbaden, Frankfurt on Friday, said that the patient was a physician. He said that the Ugandan had worked for an Italian Non-Governmental Organisation and had also looked after patients in Sierra Leone. Gruettner explained that the doctor was in Germany for treatment, saying that the hospital had capacity to help him. According to him, the World Health Organisation had asked Germany if it could help in taking care of the patient. “It is a sign for those who help in the regions where the disease has broken out, especially badly, that they can get help if they contract the disease themselves,” he said. Head of the Frankfurt Competence Center for Highly Contagious Life-Threatening Diseases, Rene Gottschalk, said that the Ugandan doctor was being treated in an isolation unit in the Frankfurt hospital. Gottschalk said that the patient was conveyed from the airport to the hospital in a special vehicle. Latest report from WHO indicates that no fewer than 3,338 people had died of the Ebola disease in Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Nigeria. A case in the U.S. has heightened concerns that Ebola could spread globally and could raise further questions about travel restrictions from the affected countries. www.punchng.com/news/suspected-ebola-patient-arrives-germany-from-sierra-leone/ |

The Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, on Monday said Nigeria would offer specialised training to 15 health personnel from three West African countries affected by the Ebola Virus Disease. Chukwu made this known when he received the African Union Commissioner for Social Affairs, Mr Mustapha Kaloko, in Abuja. He said the health personnel, comprising nine field epidemiologists and six laboratory scientists, would be selected from Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. The minister said the training, scheduled to take place in Nigeria, would last for three weeks, but did not disclose when the training would commence. He said the move was part of “a broader measure” taken by the Federal Government to assist those countries hit by the virus to contain its spread beyond their borders. “It is our belief that unless the virus is contained in the most affected countries, Nigeria will continue to be at risk because of its policy of non-restriction of movement across the sub-region. I believe that Nigeria should help its neighbours to contain the scourge, but for now, we are focusing on helping to build the capacity of the health workers in those countries at our own cost. “So, Nigeria will not rest until Ebola virus is completely tackled in West Africa,’’ he said. Chukwu said on the long run, countries around the sub-region would be encouraged to train more of its health workers using Nigerian facilities to build a stronger network against common diseases. The minister said the Federal Government was also planning “a more comprehensive masters programme for health personnel from countries in the sub-region that could last for up to two years.” He said that the effort was geared toward building the sub-region’s capacity to contain deadly diseases such as Ebola virus, HIV and Lasa fever. He said the Federal Government had procured drugs worth N50 million to be donated to Sierra Leone as part of Nigeria’s contribution to curb Ebola virus in the country. Chukwu said that Nigeria had also outlined a comprehensive programme to help its neighbours to successively fight Ebola virus. The minister expressed optimism that West Africa could stem the tide of Ebola virus within the shortest possible time, especially if countries were committed to the sub-regional’s plan of action against the disease. “Ebola virus in West Africa can be brought under control within the next six to seven months, if all countries in the sub-region work in unison,” Chukwu said. www.punchng.com/news/ebola-fg-to-train-health-workers-from-liberia-others/ |
