Education / 'call Off Strike', Buhari Begs ASUU, Other Unions by Tuntunviva(f): 5:59am On Aug 13, 2022
President Muhammadu Buhari has appealed to the striking members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other related unions to call off their strike to allow students go back to classrooms.

President Muhammadu Buhari who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari made the appeal on Friday while speaking at a Special Convocation ceremony organised to confer Honorary Doctorate Degree on a business mogul, Alhaji Muhammadu Indimi by the University of Mauduguri.

“I want to use this opportunity to appeal to the ASUU to reconsider its stance to call off their 7 months old strike, as students and their parents are desirous to see that schools are reopened. The nation cannot afford long interruption of higher education of the youths and wouldn’t undermine the development of the nation’s human capital in a strictly competitive world,” the President stressed.

He further pointed out that the appeal was made in view of students desire to return to the classrooms with their parents seeking for reopening of the shut down Universities.

President Buhari added that despite the security challenges, his administration has made tremendous achievements in the area of security, as evidenced by the occasion holding in Maiduguri, stressing that since the inception of democracy in 1999, many administrations have been talking about diversification of economy, but only the present administration implemented it.

Also speaking, the Pro-chancellor and Chairman Governing Council of the University, Ballama Manu said,

Dr. (Alhaji) Muhammadu Indimi, the Chairman of Oriental Energy Resources Limited, committed his resources and built the International Learning Centre, a befitting structure with state-of-the-art facilities and a Conference Centre for the University of Maiduguri, hence the reason for conferment of the honorary degree.

“ This is an exemplary, and worthy of emulation by all people of means and goodwill. I wish to personally extend my appreciation to Dr.Alhaji) Muhammadu Indimi for this gesture and belief in the University of Maiduguri. I pray to Allah (SWA) to continue to bless him, replenish his resources and continue to make more contributions for the benefit of humanity. Please Sir, accept my congratulations”. Manu added.

In his welcome address, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri, Prof Aliyu Shugaba also appealed to the striking ASUU and other unions to call off the strike .

“ I am using this opportunity to appeal to the striking ASUU and other Unions within the university system to call off the strike. I also want to call on well meaning Nigerians to intervene to enable students go back to school “, the VC appealed.

In his remarks, Alhaji Muhammadu Indimi thanked the University for the honour, stressing that the Honorary degree will spur him to do more..

The occasion was well attended by dignitaries including the First Lady, Hajiya Aisha Buhari, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, APC Vice Presidential candidate, Senator Kashim Shettima, Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubajar Ibn Garbai al-Amin Elkanemi among others.

Crime / Cross River Schoolgirl Laments Father’s Murder, Seeks Justice by Tuntunviva(f): 6:13pm On Aug 12, 2022
A 19-year-old Senior Secondary School student, Stella Ndoma, has cried out over the murder of her father, Chief Mbayin Ndoma a.k.a. Otisco, in his home town in Cross River State, and is seeking justice.

Stella called on the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, and the Cross River State Police Commissioner, Aminu Alhassan, to go after the killers of her father, which occurred on Wednesday, August 3, 2022, at his hometown in Cross River State.

Ndoma was allegedly murdered in his hometown, Orimekpang Junction, in the Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State for sending some youths suspected to be cultists on exile from the community.

According to Stella, “I was shocked when I learnt that my late father, Mbayin Ndoma, who was a traditional ruler in Orimekpang Community, Boki LGA of Cross River State, was shot to death by hoodlums and not even a fly has been arrested in connection with his death.”

It was gathered that some young men in the Orimekpang Junction community in Boki LGA of Cross River State were last year sent on exile by the community for their alleged involvement in cult activities.

The development was said to have angered the banished young men who were said to have invaded the community at night and murdered Ndoma for sending them on exile.

On how her father was killed, Stella said her father got a phone call from an unknown caller who asked him to leave his home at about 12:20 am, claiming some assassins were coming to take away his life.

She said that immediately her father fled his home, the assassins, suspected to be cultists, invaded her father’s home and harassed her father’s wife Queneth, and demanded to know her husband’s whereabouts and she told the assassins that her husband wasn’t at home.

She further narrated, “The assassins spent some time in their victim’s home waiting for the traditional ruler to return home probably for them to unleash mayham on him.

“At about 6am as my late father tried to return home from the community secondary school where he had gone to take refuge, the assailants attacked him, dragged him to the community secondary school Orimekpang, which is about a stone’s throw to the traditional ruler’s residence.”

She said after her step-mother heard the gun shots, and because her husband had not returned home, she ran to the community youths and informed them that she heard gun shots around the community school, and that her husband had not returned home.

Stella said the community youths mobilised with the village vigilant and went to the secondary school premises, only to find the corps of the traditional ruler in the school.

“His assailants left a note on my father’s corpse with an inscription, ‘This is the beginning of war between the community and us. Any man who squizzes bitter leaf, his hands would be bitter’; with another threat note, ‘Anyone who intends to dare us should wait for his turn'”, she said.

Contacted, the Cross River Police Public Relations Officer, SP Irene Ugbo, who confirmed the incident, said police had begun preliminary investigation in the LGA to fish out the killers.

“The police are already liaising with the leaders of the community to find a way to apprehend the killers of the traditional ruler,” Ugbo said.
