EducationShe Just Graduated College And Is Starting Her Ph.d. — And She's Only 18 by twentyfourseven(op): 10:08am On Jun 02, 2017
While many students have just graduated from high school, 18-year-old Nigeria native Nkechinyere Chidi-Ogbolu is not your typical teen.

Chidi-Ogbolu just graduated summa cum laude from Howard University with a degree in chemical engineering — making her the youngest person to graduate from Howard this year, and one of the youngest in Howard’s history.

But that’s not all for Chidi-Ogbolu.

She’s now preparing to start a Ph.D. program at the University of California-Davis after the summer ends. She’ll be studying biomedical engineering with a focus on creating and discovering new medicines.

“I’ve always been interested in the medical field,” she told USA TODAY College. “But I want to have a broader scale of impact than in treating patients one-on-one.”

Chidi-Ogbolu said she’s always been the youngest person in her classes. While most students from Nigeria graduate high school at the age of 16, Chidi-Ogbolu finished high school particularly early, at 14, since she skipped 5th grade and attended an accelerated high school.

After high school, she left Nigeria for America and enrolled full-time at Howard University, a historically black university and her first-choice

“I thought I would be more comfortable at the age going to a school with more people that looked like me and therefore I could more easily relate to,” said Chidi-Ogbolu. “Plus, they gave me a full scholarship, so that definitely helped.”

Leaving her parents in Nigeria was difficult, but Chidi-Ogbolu wasn’t alone. Many of her extended family members live in America, including an aunt who lived not far from her dorm, and other family members in Texas and Alabama.

She credited her family’s support for her ability to cope with her new surroundings.

“I spoke to my mom almost every day on the phone — for over an hour almost every time. My dad and I talked really often too,” Chidi-Ogbolu says, adding that she spent most holidays with her aunts in America. “Talking to them definitely helped sometimes when things were overwhelming.”

“My support system was a very big part of why I was able to stay very grounded during the whole journey,” she says.

Her friends at Howard were very supportive of her too. Many of her them didn’t initially know how young she was, which gave rise to many moments of surprise.

“People usually reacted with shock,” she says. “Then they became really protective.”

With the blessings of her parents, Chidi-Ogbolu spent the summer after her junior year researching African weather patterns with Professor Paul Ullrich at UC-Davis. “While I was there, I decided that grad school was what I wanted to do.”

She started working on her graduate school applications during her senior year. “I can’t say it was stress-free,” she jokes. Her hard work paid off on February 7, when she received her acceptance letter from UC-Davis.

“It was definitely a wonderful moment,” she says.

Prasant Mohapatra, UC Davis vice provost of graduate education, and dean of graduate studies, had this to say about Chidi-Ogbolu: “We are delighted to welcome Nkechinyere into the graduate education community at UC Davis. We hope to provide a dynamic educational experience that will deepen and expand her passion for advancing the field of biomedical engineering, and we are truly impressed by her future plans to help people worldwide through scientific research and innovation.”

What’s next for her? This summer, she’s taking an advanced biology class at a local community college to prepare for her doctoral program. She’s also working on a book, provisionally titled Tales of an Uber Minor in College.

While she says she’s super busy, she does set aside free time to relax. “I love watching movies and series, especially Korean ones, and I like to sing and do karaoke,” she says.

Chidi-Ogbolu also has some advice for teens her age.

“Don’t limit yourself because you think you can’t do it or because no one you know had done it, "She advises. "You can always be the exception to rule and end up being exceptional."

Its advisable you go to your bank and collect the statement of account. I dont know if online statement of account would be accepted.

what i believe is being looked out for is the signature of the banking officer/account officer, letterhead, etc.
Thanks.

ferdimako: @twentyfourseven, u have to be sure ur job over there is not regulated if not current job duties can't get that NOC when u bring in ur first degree.

I read at another place where an Indian that has a B.A but has been teaching computer and other subjects for years was refused because he hadn't a BED cert and applied under teacher against Manitoba Province Nominations. .

Unless FWS ignores it via CIC or u check d regulations of d NOC ur current duties will fetch.
this is serious!
TravelRe: Canadian Federal Skilled Worker Program-timelines Here by twentyfourseven: 5:14pm On Aug 23, 2014
solomonwis: Work experience is of paramount importance in this scenario. The question is,does the person in question carry out the main duties as specified in the NOC...Please go through the below extracted from the operational guideline of the CIC regarding the processing of FSWP.

Pursuant to R75(2)(a), the applicant must have accumulated at least one year of continuous full-time paid work experience, or the equivalent in continuous paid part-time work experience, in the occupation identified in their application for permanent residence as their primary occupation, that is listed in Skill Type 0 (Managerial occupations), Skill Level A (Professional occupations) or B (Technical occupations and skilled trades) of NOC 2011.
In order to meet the minimum requirements, the applicant’s skilled work experience must:
 have occurred within the 10 years preceding the date of their application for permanent residence; and
 not be in an occupation that has been designated as a restricted occupation.
Note: At the time of publication, no occupations were designated as restricted. However, current information, refer to the CIC website at: www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/skilled/index.asp.
In addition, during that period of employment, the applicant must have:
 performed the actions described in the lead statement for the occupation as set out in the occupational description of the NOC [R75(2)(b)]; and
 performed a substantial number of the main duties, including all of the essential duties, of the occupation as set out in the occupational description of the NOC [R75(2)(c)].
Note: The “Employment Requirements” listed in the NOC description for each occupation are not applicable.

In other words, your qualification is important to secure points under education but does not affect the assessment of your work experience neither does your job title..
Thank you. This helps a great deal.
TravelRe: Canadian Federal Skilled Worker Program-timelines Here by twentyfourseven: 2:55pm On Aug 22, 2014
@damkollins, @solomonwis and all,

Consider this scenario:

Someone has a B.sc in Mechanical Engrg, but wants to use Construction superintendent/ Project Co-ordinator's
experience which was gotten for the last 3 years for this application. He also has one year of Mechanical Engineering experience before assuming that role.

But, Looking at the NOC details, Construction superintendent/ Project Co-ordinator is under NOC 0711 and I have problems with two of the requirements:

A university degree in civil engineering or a college diploma in construction technology is usually required

Extensive experience in the construction industry may substitute for post-secondary education requirements.

Now, the questions are:

• Will the application fly, knowing that Civil Engineering degree is usually reqd?

• Should the psn apply under NOC2132 which is Mechanical Engrg?

• Is 3-4 years considered extensive enough to meet above requirements?

Thanks

ANBAKO: What if he is practising his project engineering in the field of mechanical or even computer/electronics engineering?......what I am saying is that project engineering is not only about construction or civil engineering. It is a broad role in the engineering field.
okay, goodluck to everyone!
TravelRe: Canadian Federal Skilled Worker Program-timelines Here by twentyfourseven: 12:22pm On Aug 14, 2014
ANBAKO: You might not be so sure. Project engineering can be virtually in any engineering field.
@ fingertips, please clarify which area of engineering you are into.

Good luck
...

While i agree with that, i guess you should check up
the details of each occupation (Engineering) on the NOC.

Based on that, I still firmly believe that Constuction Mgr/Estimator and Civil Engineering
fit in best to claim the required ponts for Work Experience.

Fingertips: Hello good people,

Commendable job on here. I just came across this post after a friend urged me to apply for this. I have some questions;
1. Is there a closing date for this?
2. What are the step by step process involved granted I have B.Eng and MSc Degrees with over one year experience in the capacity of project engineer.

I appreciate your responses. Many thanks.
Closely related occupations are Construction Mgr and Construction Estimator.
