Etihad Airways and Ibom Air sign interline agreement connecting Nigeria and Etihad's network

Travellers will reach Abuja, Uyo, Port Harcourt, Calabar and Enugu on a single ticket from the launch of Etihad's Accra and Lagos services in March 2027

Abu Dhabi, UAE – Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, and Nigerian carrier Ibom Air have signed an interline agreement that will carry guests travelling with Etihad beyond Lagos and Accra to five Nigerian cities on a single ticket, from the day Etihad's own services to the two cities begin in March 2027.

Under the agreement, Etihad guests arriving in Lagos or Accra will be able to continue their journey on Ibom Air to Abuja, Uyo, Port Harcourt, Calabar and Enugu, with connections also available between Accra and Abuja and between Accra and Uyo. One booking will cover the entire journey, with bags checked through to the final destination.

Uyo and Calabar in the south join Abuja, Port Harcourt and Enugu on the list of Nigerian cities available on a single ticket with Etihad, whether guests are travelling for business, to see family or to see the country.

Etihad's nonstop service from Abu Dhabi to the region begins next year, with four flights a week to Accra from 24 March 2027 and a daily service to Lagos from 23 March 2027.

Arik De, Etihad Airways Chief Revenue and Commercial Officer, said: “Our ambitions in Africa are long-term, and Nigeria sits at the centre of them. Ibom Air has built a strong domestic network from its base in Uyo, and partnerships with airlines that know their own markets are how we grow on the continent. Having this in place before our Accra and Lagos flights begin next March means we arrive in the region already connected to the cities beyond them.”

George Uriesi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Ibom Air, said: “This agreement marks a significant milestone in our journey to becoming a truly world-class African regional airline. It enables international travellers to access the cities we serve through a single booking, enhancing connectivity and convenience. Additionally, it positions Ibom Air as the key domestic and regional connection for Etihad Airways’ operations into Nigeria and Ghana from next year. We look forward to welcoming Etihad’s guests onboard and showcasing the excellent service that defines the Ibom Air experience.”

Tickets combining both networks will become available on 3 November 2026.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has announced the transfer of regulatory oversight of the electricity market in Akwa Ibom State to the Akwa Ibom State Electricity Regulatory Commission, marking another step in the decentralisation of Nigeria’s power sector.

Under the transfer order, the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company Plc will establish a subsidiary to take over responsibility for electricity supply and distribution within Akwa Ibom State.

NERC disclosed the development on Wednesday in a public notice posted on its official X handle, stating that the transfer was made in compliance with the amended Constitution and the Electricity Act 2023.

The order makes Akwa Ibom the latest state to receive a transfer order for the regulation of its intrastate electricity market. Before the latest development, NERC had said 16 states had fully transitioned to state electricity regulation, with Gombe becoming the 16th state by July 2026.


The statement read, “In compliance with the amended Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Electricity Act 2023 (Amended), the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (“NERC” or the “Commission”) has issued an order to transfer regulatory oversight of the electricity market in Akwa Ibom State from the Commission to the Akwa Ibom State Electricity Regulatory Commission.”

With the Akwa Ibom order, the number of states that have received regulatory transfer orders has risen to 17, although the transition in Akwa Ibom is expected to be completed in February 2027.

NERC said the Electricity Act retained its role as the central regulator for electricity activities that cut across state boundaries. The commission stated, “With the EA 2023, the Commission retains the role as a central regulator with regulatory oversight on the inter-state/international generation, transmission, supply, trading and system operations.”
