CREATION:
Imo State was created on February 3, 1976 out of the old East Central State by the then regime of General Murtala Mohammed. Imo State derives its name from Imo River, which takes its course from the Okigwe/Awka upland. It lies within latitudes 4°45'N and 7°15'N, and longitude 6°50'E and 7°25'E.

Abia State was carved out of Imo State in the state creation exercise of 1991. It has Owerri as it capital and largest city. With 3 Geopolitical Zones of Owerri, Orlu and Okigwe with 27 Local Government Areas namely:

Situated in south eastern Nigeria, Imo State covers an area of 5,530 square kilometres. With Population of 3,934,899 (2006 Estimate) popularly referred to as the Eastern Heartland.
Imo State shares boundaries with Enugu and Ebonyi States to the north, Anambra State to the west, Rivers State to the south and Cross River and Akwa Ibom States to the east.

The inhabitants of Imo State are Igbo. The official language of the state is Igbo alongside English. Imo State has a rich cultural heritage. This is manifested in dressing, music, dance, festivals, arts and crafts.

Imo State has many rivers. The main rivers in the state are Imo, Otamiri and Njaba. The major lakes are in Oguta and Abadaba in Obowu local government area.

The main streams draining the state are Imo, Otamiri, Njaba and Orasi rivers, all of which have very few tributaries. With the exception of Imo River, which runs through the area underlain by the Imo Shales, other rivers rise within the coastal plain sands. Generally, river valleys constitute the major physical features, which are often marshy.
The vegetation is tropical rain forest.

Imo State indigenes are predominantly Christians of different denominations, but mostly Catholicism. Some people in the state still practice traditional religions.

ECONOMY
The State is blessed with abundant natural resources. These include crude oil, lead, zinc, white clay, fine sand, limestone and natural gas in commercial quantities. The state also produces agricultural produce such as palm produce, cocoa and rubber. The main staple crops are yam, cassava, cocoyam and maize.

Learned professionals, entrepreneurs and seasoned artists also abound in the state. Works of art produced in the state include: carved doors, walking sticks of different designs, sculptures, flutes, wooden mortars and pestles, gongs, and the famous talking drums. Metal works and various types of fabrications are locally produced.

Some art & cultural centers include: The Mbari Cultural Center at Owerri, Eke Nguru in Aboh Mbaise and lgwekala shrine in Umunoha are traditional art and craft centers that depict the culture and heritage of the lgbo.

Industries include Fuason Industries, Owerri, which produces galvanized iron sheets, the Afrik Enterprises, Awo-Omama, a pharmaceutical company, Imo Concord Hotel, Owerri. Industries that had been partially privatized include card packaged Industry, Orlu, Resin Paints Limited, Aboh Mbaise and Aluminium Extrusion Industry, Inyisi. Industries in the private sector include Sab Spare Parts and Allied Accessories, Okigwe, which make motor-spare parts, Oma Pharmaceutical, Awomoma, which produces drugs and medicines, Magil Industries Atta, which makes steel, sponge, bread, polythene and paper.

Economic trees like the iroko, mahogany, obeche, gmelina, bamboo, rubber palm and oil palm are in abundance.

TOURISM

There are many traditional festivals observed in the State. Each community has different festivals celebrated in honor of ancient deities or to mark an important event in the history of the area. There are different festivals to usher in the harvest season, the most popular being the Ahiajoku Festival, which is observed in all the farming communities.Traditional music and dances include Abiigbo, Ekpe, Ikoro, Okonko, Mmanwu, etc.

The attention of the Imo State Command has been drawn to the news in circulation that the Police shot a medical doctor during their protest march. The news is not only false in its entirety but also malicious as no Policeman shot at a medical doctor during the protest as it is being circulated. However, the true position of the incident was that, on 4th February, 2016 at about 1100hrs, members of the Nigeria Medical Association, Imo State Chapter embarked on a protest march against concession of government owned hospitals in the state.

The protesting doctors took over the major streets in Owerri metropolis, causing traffic log jam and discomfort to members of the public. From Freedom Square where they all converged, they suddenly advanced towards the Government House, infiltrated at this point by miscreants who started throwing stones and other offensive objects at the Policemen who were there to control the situation.

In the ensuing fracas, Police had no choice but to apply reasonable force, using teargas canisters to bring the situation under control. The crowd was subsequently dispersed.

For the avoidance of doubt, the Imo State Police has no problem with medical Doctors in the state. The claim that a doctor was shot is totally false in its entirety. The situation was professionally handled and it is reiterated that the medical doctors should produce the doctor shot and extract of bullets recovered from his body to substantiate their claim. Press men who witnessed the incident could also be required to produce pictures/videos of the incident indicating same.

The Command wishes to assure the general public of the Command’s readiness to carry out its statutory duties of maintaining peace and order at all times, with total display of regard to fundamental right of the citizens. Members of the public are advised to remain law abiding, please.

5 Year Old Boy Thanks Gov Okorocha For Free Education

It was a moment of gratitude and solemnity as a boy and his brother of about 5 and 7 years each breached protocol to embrace Gov Rochas Okorocha muttering the words, 'thank you daddy for free education'. It was quite obvious how greatly the Rescue Mission Government has touched the ordinary Imo citizens when the younger boy who was being carried by her mother first shouted "Rochas Okorocha!" to the amazement of all, and later ran out of the mother's grip to jump on the governor.

This event occurred yesterday, 1st February 2016 at Chukwuma Nwoha by MCC Road junction area as Gov Rochas Okorocha went on inspection of the road his government is dualising.

Gov Rochas Okorocha was filled with emotions and could barely utter the words, 'thank you my sons' and hugged the kids with arms wide open.

Who said Imo people are not appreciative of the great works of the Rescue Mission Government of Owelle Rochas Okorocha?

OWELLE ROCHAS OKOROCHA CALLS FOR ACCOUNTABILITY AMONG POLITICIANS AND THE PRIESTS.

The Executive Governor of Imo State, His Excellency, Owelle Okorocha has called for accountability among the Nigerian political class. The governor who said this today at the burial ceremony of Late Mrs. Bessie Ikpeazu, the mother of Abia State Governor, Chief Okezie Ikpeazu, addressed the audience on dual capacity as Imo State Governor and the representative of the President, His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari. He maintained that the political leaders, with special reference to the President, the Governors and the Local Government Chairmen, owe it as a duty to serve the masses who voted them into power.

Other dignitories who came to condole with the Abia Governor and his family are:the wife of the president, Aisha Buhari who was reprented by The Wife of the Governor of Imo State, Nneoma Nkechi Okorocha; Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu; Minister of State for Education, Prof Tony Anwukah, gonernors of Ebonyi, Akwa-Ibom, Rivers; and other leaders among whom are Peter Obi, Adolphos Wabara and others.

RE: 3000 IMO STATE WORKERS SACKED

It is pertinent at this point to clear the air on some misappropriated insinuations from various quarters that the Imo State Government has sacked over 3000 workers of the state.

The Imo State Government and, of course, the Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, are law abiding and know the civil service rules and terms of service, and therefore would not embark on dismissal of any worker without due process.

The truth is that no Imo State worker has been disengaged from service. The affected workers were only suspended following the recommendation of the committee which carried out performance audit on the state government's parastatals/agencies/departments. It will be a great disservice to the good people of Imo State and the government to continue spending the meagre allocation of the state on Agencies/Parastatals/Departments that are not productive nor rendering quality services to the people of the state.

Moreover, a large number of the staff in the affected Agencies/Parastatals/Departments were seconded from ministries. The State Government has directed them to return to their parent ministries, this simply implies that this group of workers are not affected in the suspension neither have they lost their jobs. Also, by the agreement of the government with the concessionaires, they (concessionaires) are under obligation to employ as much workers they meet as possible depending on what they need (manpower/skills).

With the clearly stated realities/conditions above, it is obvious that over two-third number of the workers in the affected Agencies/Parastatals/Departments still have their jobs while the government takes further evaluation and decisions as to what will be the fate of the affected workers.

It is instructive to note that concessioned agencies like Ochiedike Diagnostic and Renal Centre, Water Board etc are now fully functional and even making money for the state government.
