In line with the communique issued by the Federal Government Joint Tax Board, after an emergency meeting held on May 9, 2023, the Lagos State Government has announced the commencement of annual renewal of Proof of Ownership Certificate for vehicles registered within the State.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation, Engr. Abdulhafiz Toriola made this announcement recently at a press briefing to sensitize the public on the initiative, held at Alausa, Lagos.

He said, ‘’the procedure is aimed at ensuring real-time tracking and maintaining the integrity of vehicle records on the National Vehicle and Identification Scheme (NVIS) database.

Barely one week after after bursting a child trafficking brothel in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State, the State Government and security agencies have finally captured the owner of the brothel.

Popularly known as Nwaanyị Ukwu Venza, the Nnewi-born suspected trafficker, whose real name is Ekpereamaka Okonkwo, was said to have escaped, while many of her staff also deserted the premises the day government and security agencies stormed the brothel, following a tip of information from a whistleblower. She had, therefore, remained on the run since then till she was eventually captured through the joint efforts of the State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare and the security agencies.

It was gathered that the suspect was captured while she was trying to bribe the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Mrs Ify Obinabo, so as to “water the ground” to resolve the matter.

Globally, subsidies, whether for food, transportation, energy or housing, are part of good governance. So, the issue is not subsidies but who benefit from them. In Nigeria, subsidies are primarily of the rich, by the rich and for the rich. I will highlight a few, how they are being manipulated and how huge sums of money can be recovered not just to subsidize fuel but also provide funds for development.

1. *Diversion of N40 billion from Federation Account*

A company, Continental Transfert Technique had been hired by the Ministry of Interior to collect the Combined Expatriate Residence Permit and Alien Card (CERPAC) Fee of $2,000 per annum from every expatriate in Nigeria. The revenue from 2019 comes to an average of N40 billion per annum. This collection which violates Section 162 of the Constitution and provisions of the Immigration Act 2015, is then shared on percentages of Federal Government, 30, Interior Ministry, 7, Immigration Service, and Continental Transfert Technique, 58 per-cent.

We challenged this illegality at the Federal High Court and won the cases. The court directed the NIS to collect the funds henceforth and remit same to the Federation Account. But the contractor and the federal government appealed against the judgment and have continued to share the N40 billion per annum.

2. *Additional Revenue of $1.5 billion payable to Federation Account*

In July 2015, I drew the attention of the Federal Government to the fact that the 15-year fiscal incentives given to the oil and gas companies operating under the Deep Offshore and Inland Basin Production Sharing Contracts Act had expired in June 2014. When the Federal Government ignored our request, we drafted a Bill for the amendment of the law. The Bill which was adopted and sponsored by Senator T. Orji scaled the first reading in the Senate but was not passed before the dissolution of the 8th National Assembly.

President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress, APC, on Thursday, kicked against the invitation of five ad-hoc staff members of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to testify as special witnesses in the petition that a former Vice President and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, filed to challenge the outcome of the 2023 presidential election.

President Tinubu, who is the 2nd Respondent in the petition that is seeking to nullify his election victory, said he did not have fore knowledge of contents of statements the witnesses deposed on oath before the court.

Arguing through his team of lawyers led by Chief Wole Olanipekun, SAN, Tinubu, maintained that the law made it mandatory that such vital statements must be front-loaded ahead of time so as give other parties the opportunity to prepare adequately.

The incident happened at Ihiala, Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, and happened exactly one week after a suspected ritualists similarly murdered a septuagenarian and cut off his genital organs in Umunze, Orumba South Local Government Area of the State.

The two suspects captured in Ihiala were accused of indulging in internet fraud (popularly known as Yahoo Yahoo), and were accused of killing the victims for ritual purposes.

Viral videos from the scene of the incident show some dead bodies loaded in a wheelbarrow, while the accused were forced push them turn by turn.
