hapiness55:
Umueri and Aguleri war
The war between Umueri and Aguleri, two Igbo communities in southeastern Nigeria, is a significant historical conflict that has shaped the region's social, political, and cultural landscape. The conflict, known as the "Igbo-Umuleri War," has deep roots in the history of the Igbo people and reflects the complexities of intercommunity relations in the region.

The origins of the Umueri-Aguleri war can be traced back to ancient times when both communities were establishing their identities and territorial boundaries. Being neighbors in close proximity, competition over fertile land and vital resources naturally arose, sparking disputes that gradually evolved into armed confrontations.

One of the main catalysts for the war was the issue of ancestral claims. Each community laid claim to ancestral origins in the contested territories, leading to vehement disagreements and accusations of territorial encroachment. Oral traditions passed down through generations played a crucial role in fueling these claims, often leading to conflicting narratives and deeply entrenched beliefs.

Another significant factor that contributed to the conflict was the nature of leadership within each community. The traditional chieftaincy system in Igbo society vested power in the hands of influential rulers, often referred to as "Igwe" or "Obi," depending on the community. Disputes over leadership succession and control of resources frequently led to internal divisions and external tensions.

As the war intensified, alliances were formed with neighboring communities, amplifying the scale and complexity of the conflict. Other Igbo clans and surrounding ethnic groups either allied with Umueri or Aguleri, depending on their historical relationships and interests, further deepening the regional divisions.

The Igbo-Umuleri War was characterized by periods of intense fighting and relative calm, with both sides experiencing victories and setbacks. The war's ferocity often led to devastating consequences for both communities, including loss of lives, displacement, and destruction of property. These consequences, coupled with years of hostility, engendered deep-seated animosity and distrust between Umueri and Aguleri.

Over time, external pressures and changing circumstances began to influence the trajectory of the war. European colonization in the late 19th and early 20th centuries brought new challenges and dynamics to the region. The colonial powers sought to exert control and exploit the resources, leading to shifts in power dynamics and alliances between various communities, including Umueri and Aguleri.

In the post-colonial era, efforts towards nation-building and unity in Nigeria prompted the Nigerian government to actively discourage intercommunity conflicts. Although the fighting between Umueri and Aguleri continued intermittently, there were also attempts at reconciliation and mediation to achieve lasting peace in the region.

In recent times, there have been strides towards resolving the historical grievances between Umueri and Aguleri. Community leaders and elders have engaged in peace talks and reconciliation initiatives, recognizing the need to transcend past hostilities for the greater good of their people.

The Umueri-Aguleri war remains a poignant reminder of the complexities of historical conflicts and the enduring impact they can have on societies. The struggle over land, resources, and identity has had long-lasting consequences for both communities, shaping their social cohesion, political dynamics, and cultural expressions.

In conclusion, the war between Umueri and Aguleri holds a crucial place in the history of the Igbo people and southeastern Nigeria. The conflict's origins lie in deep-rooted historical claims and leadership disputes, exacerbated by regional alliances and external pressures. The war has left indelible marks on both communities, yet it also serves as a reminder of the importance of reconciliation, cooperation, and the pursuit of lasting peace for a prosperous and united future.

Are you from either of those communities??

Breaking: Two APC chieftains dump Party, Presidential Campaign Council
January 3, 2023

Few weeks to the next general election, two directorate members of the All Progressives Congress APC Presidential Campaign Council PCC have resigned their membership of both the council and the party.

“Mr. Chairman, with my many years of active participation in politics and as a former party administrator, and elected official into many political offices, I have come to this conclusion for many reasons.

“Chiefly among which are: the absence of unity of purpose among party members and stakeholders occasioned by internal conflicts, unending litigations, internal threats and counter threats of anti-party activities, lack of genuine reconciliation, couple with lack of commitments and dedications to the success of the party by many stakeholders.

“For these obvious reasons, I concluded that I can not continue to be a member of the party.

“Mr. Chairman, by this resignation, I cease to be a member of the Presidential Campaign Council, Assistant Secretary of the North Central Directorate of Mobilization and all organs and committees of the party."

In another development, a member of the Directorate of Youth Mobilization, North East, Zanna Ali, said his resignation was because the party could not produce a credible presidential candidate

In his own letter dated January 1, 2023 and addressed to the Secretary of the APC PCC, Hon. James Faleke, Ali said he was pulling out because he has decided to put national interest above personal interest.

He said; “I humbly wish to write and inform your respected office that, I, Zanna Bukar Ali, a member of the Presidential Campaign Council, Directorate of National Youth Mobilization under the distinguished Leadership of His Excellency, Alh. Yahaya Bello, the National Coordinator of the National Youth Mobilization of the PCC with serial number 51, National Youth Mobilization, North East Directorate wish to tender my resignation as a member of the committee forthwith.

“I am grateful to my former party and my principal in the party for my appointment as a member of the Committee, it is indeed a great honour for me to be part of the Committee, but I believe that the National interest supersedes my personal interest.

“And based on the inhability of the party to present a credible candidate for Nigerians is another reason why I took my decision as a concern Nigerian. On this note, I resolved to resign my appointment as a Member of the Committee.”

Ali added that he has also resigned from all other APC Presidential support groups campaigning for the presidential candidate of the party, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu/Kashim Shettima ticket

Politics / Breaking News: Federal High Court Sacks Governor Oyetola As APC Guber Candidate by UmuEri(m): 10:20pm On Sep 30, 2022
Osun: Court Nullifies Nomination Of APC Candidate, Oyetola, Deputy Says Buni violated Constitution

Tunde Oyesina, Abuja

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja Friday evening nullified the nomination of Governor Isiaka Oyetola and his Deputy Governorship candidate, Benedict Alabi as candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the last guber election in Osun State.

The court premised its judgement  on the ground that Governor Mai Mala Buni who submitted their names to INEC violated the provisions of Section 183 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Section 82(3) of the Electoral Act 2022.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) through its counsel, Kehinde Ogunwumiju had in a suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/468/2022 dragged Governor Mai Mala Buni and four  others before the court challenging the nomination and sponsorship of Governor Oyetola and his deputy as the duly nominated candidates of the APC.

In challenging the competence of the suit, counsel to Oyetola, Kunle Adegoke (SAN) who contended, amongst other grounds that the plaintiff did not have the locus to commence the action and that the suit was statute-barred.

In arguing to the contrary,  Ogunwumiju (SAN), leading O.M. Atoyebi (SAN) and Ademola Abimbola, submitted that the plaintiff rightly commenced the suit under Section 285(14) (c) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).

In its judgment, Justice Emeka Nwite agreed with the submissions of the plaintiff’s counsel and declared as null and void, the nomination of Oyetola and Alabi by the APC.

The court also held that Governor Mai Mala Buni acted in contravention of the provision of Section 183 of the Constitution when he held dual executive positions as the Governor of Yobe State and the Chairman of the National Caretaker Committee of APC.

The court held that the steps or decisions taken by Buni, including forwarding the names of Oyetola and Alabi to INEC, amounted to a nullity in law.

Politics / You're A disappointment for Breaching Our Agreement, APC Chairman Tells Tinubu by UmuEri(m): 7:37am On Sep 29, 2022
The controversy generated by the release of the 422-member All Progressives Congress APC Presidential Campaign Council is yet to abate following a caustic letter written by the Senator Abdullahi Adamu-led National Working Committee NWC to its presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

In the letter obtained in the wee hours of Thursday, Adamu accused Tinubu of breaching the agreement he had with the NWC with regard to the composition of the campaign council.

The composition of the council had been serially delayed as the NWC was said to have set up a three-member committee to interface with Tinubu’s team.

The NWC members were the National Organising Secretary, the National Legal Adviser and Deputy Women Leader which was set up to harmonize the council membership list with Tinubu’s team.

However, in the letter Adamu wrote to Tinubu in London, the party said the presidential candidate is operating solo whereas winning elections is supposed to be a collaborative effort.

The letter reads

“On behalf of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), I present my compliments to Your Excellency, and have the honour to convey to you, in truth and respect, the Committee’s opinion and position, regarding the above-mentioned subject matter, with a view to having a clear understanding about the respective roles and responsibilities of the principal organs of the Party charged with the duties of conducting the campaigns in the forth-coming general elections.

This correspondence has become necessary in view of developments that took place over the last few days around the purported appointments into the Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) that was announced precipitately by officials of the Council, without making recourse to the NWC for approval. All along, the NWC had been disposed towards the campaign in a cooperative spirit that is driven by the overall interest of the Party and the singular desire of victory for our candidates, in the persons of your esteemed self and your running mate.

“It is against this background that the NWC received with astonishment and regret, the press release by the PCC on 23rd September 2022, in which a purported list of appointees was announced, which effectively served as the approved roster of participants in the Party’s Presidential Campaign Council.

The purported list not only came as a complete surprise to the NWC and the Party’s leadership, but also contravened the principles and purposes of the arrangements that you and I had led towards the adoption of the Organogram of the PCC, and its principal officials.

“Perhaps it has become necessary owing to the passage of time, that I should draw Your Excellency’s attention to the agreements that we reached in principle around the final adoption of the PCC list, based on the understanding that it was a work in progress, until such a time that the Joint NWC/PCC Committee that was established to formalise the structure and populate the list, submits its report.

“Your Excellency will no doubt recall our meetings in my office and also at the NWC Conference Room at the Party’s National Secretariat, on Wednesday, 7th September 2022, during which we discussed the details of the Organogram of the PCC and its composition, as a collaborative project between the two entities. Our recollection of those meetings clearly leaves us in no doubt that a breach of agreement has occurred, and that a return to the principles of cooperation and respect for each other is required.

“In Your Excellency’s own words, which I take the liberty to quote here, which I also hold dearly, you stated that “there is a burden on everyone’s shoulders towards delivering the elections to the Party and the candidate”. This has been the view of the NWC and myself all along since Your Excellency’s emergence as our Great Party’s Flagbearer.

“The NWC is striving under trying circumstances to keep faith with this vision, and to take our Party and candidates to victory, not only in the Presidential elections but in all others across the elective strata of offices.

May I, therefore, point out to Your Excellency, that winning election is a cooperative as well as a collaborative effort, that is done in a transparent and disinterested manner by all parties concerned, by respecting established boundaries and acknowledging the contributions of everyone. The NWC believes that any sign of disarray in the Party’s ranks will undermine the spirit and ethos of the campaign and give the undue alarm to faithful members and followers of the Party across the country.

“At the same, such a development would undoubtedly come as “Manna from Heaven” for the opposition parties, whose only desire when all else fails, is to see the introduction of rancour, division and disinclination in the leadership of our Great Party.

“I am sure Your Excellency will agree with me that this is an eventuality that we must do all in our power to prevent from happening. You will also agree that we owe it a duty as leaders to provide guidance by example to the rest of the Party including the PCC, to abide by agreements and adhere strictly to the work ethos that has been adopted by all of us. It is only by doing so that we will establish the premise for victory and gain the trust and confidence of our dear countrymen and women.

“Without further admonishment or complaints, I wish hereby to call upon Your Excellency to restrain the PCC from undertaking solo projects of this nature and agree to work with all stakeholders towards taking our Party to victory. I shall not find it necessary to reiterate the importance of the Party in the overall scheme of things in these campaigns, and the singular position of the NWC in driving the process towards our securing of victory in the polls.

“It suffices for me to convey the general and overwhelming sentiment of the NWC with regards to the ill-timed and unfortunate release of the PCC list, which confounded rather than pleased the members and whose withdrawal will assure the NWC of Your Excellency’s respect and disposition towards the Party, as well as the magnanimous spirit of cooperation towards achieving victory together with the NWC.

Please accept, Your Excellency, my own personal regard and consideration, as well as the assurances of the of NWCs’ warm and sincere felicitations”.

Politics / Lawyer Wears Pastoral Robe To Anambra Court by UmuEri(m): 5:33am On Jul 01, 2022

A drama was staged at the Okpoko magistrate court in the Ogbaru Local Government Area, near Onitsha, Anambra State, on Thursday, when proceedings were disrupted as a lawyer, identified as Ogbachalu Goshen, appeared in court dressed in full priest robes, looking like a reverend.

The court proceedings, presided by Her Worship CB Mbaegbu, were on until a matter was called up and Goshen announced his appearance as a defence counsel.

When the Magistrate told him he cannot appear and address the court in that regalia, he objected, citing the recent Supreme Court judgement that gave female students the backing to wear hijab in public schools as a precedent.

As the Magistrate stood her ground that he cannot appear in her court in that mode of dressing, Goshen also insisted that it was his right and that the objection by the Magistrate was an infringement on his fundamental rights as enshrined in Section 38 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

As the arguments continued with both the Magistrate and the lawyer refusing to shift ground, the Magistrate rose, thereby forcing the court to dismiss immediately.

Various lawyers and people who came for different matters filed outside as the Magistrate immediately entered her car and drove off.

But in an interview, Goshen justified his actions and said that the incident had already become a constitutional matter since the Supreme Court made such a ruling.

He said the court should also answer what will happen when a female Muslim lawyer enters the court in her hijab.

He said that he is an ordained pastor and should also be allowed to appear that way in court since the Supreme Court has decided.
Asked whether the ruling is in the best interest of the judiciary, he said that for now, it remains a precedent that must be obeyed unless there is a judicial review.

Human Rights Lawyer, Chief Malcolm Omirhobo, Storms Supreme Court Dressed In Native Doctor Attire, After The Apex Court Ruled That Muslim Students Can Wear Hijab To Schools In Lagos.

According to reports, when the Learned Lawyer walked into the Supreme Court, the Justices who were on seat looked up in shock, looked at themselves and without a word, went on recess.

In an interview he granted few minutes later, Chief Omirhobo stated that since the Supreme Court has ruled last week that students could wear Hijab to schools in Lagos, that means the Court has given every religion a right to dress the way the believers wish to dress and that he has decided to dress like a traditionalist/native doctor from now on to court since the Supreme Court has given religious freedom to all religions!

The lawmakers had on November 17, 2020, joined Gov David Umahi to APC.

Justice Inyang Ekwo in a judgement held that the lawmakers, having abandoned the political party that sponsored them, could not transfer the mandate they obtained from the ballot to another political party.

He held that the 17 lawmakers who became members of House of Assembly on the platform of the PDP, could not justify their defection when there was no division in the PDP.
