The Ryugyong Hotel is known to be the largest abandoned skyscraper in the world. It is located in Pyongyang, North Korea and spires an astonishing 330m (1080ft) with a total of 105 floors. It is also referred to as the 105 building, a reference to its number of floors. Was designed to be a mix use building, expected to house a hotel, restaurant and retail.

Nobody is quite sure why the building is still unoccupied till today, but report says it has been completed and is just awaiting use. Construction began in 1987 but was halted in 1992 when North Korea was plunged into economic crisis due to collapse of soviet bloc. It was said that the building took up to 2% of North Korea’s GDP and cost an estimated sum of $750 000 according to a Japanese newspaper.

The Eastgate in Harare Zimbabwe is the largest office and shopping complex in the entire country. The complex was designed by Architect Mick Pearce in collaboration with Ove Arup engineers, Pearce’s practice is in Harare, and he specialises in buildings which are low cost, low maintenance, and have low environmental impact. It is the first building in the world with this amount of sophistication that cools itself.

It opened in 1996 on Robert Mugabe Avenue and Second Street, and provides 5,600 m² of retail space, 26,000 m² of office space and parking for 450 cars.



Mick Pearce says the design of Eastgate centre was inspired by the African termite mound. This came when an investment group in Harare Zimbabwe hired him to design a sustainable shopping and office complex in the country, but didn’t want to pay for the expensive air conditioning. A HVAC installation would mean importing from a foreign country which would eat into the foreign reserve of Zimbabwe.

Mick Pearce thought of a sophisticated yet easy to maintain building complex, he decided to harness the ingenuity of a termite mound and incoperate in his design. This is referred to as biomimicry in architecture.

When termites build,they open holes both underground and the upper level to manage cooling effect which preserves the fungal they store as their main source survival.

Personally,i don't like watching tragedic movies but two hours ago i unavoidably re-watched the movie TITANIC. Infact,at my age,i left my sister in the living room and went to the bathroom to cry out my eyes.
I cried because i tried to connect the honesty between the Jack and Rose to our real world and all i could visualize was the trend of people prefering to stay unmarried while they just give birth to children,secondly,the rate of divorce increasing and becoming common. Chai!do you know how sweet it would have been,if we hadn't stopped loving. I mean,even the music artist and movie actors show us how life should be but they are too scared of sharing wealth with women because of divorce. Oh God help this generation,that has dropped trust and chosen distrust and infidelity because of lust. Even the married are just married for aesthetics. Chai!Please guys,let us embrace romance. The future generation will definitely not know how the real romance is like,with the style we run because we idolize celebrities. We need our Jacks and Roses,Romeos and Juliets. Recently,it looks like some of our active Nigerian state governors are waking up and are trying to turn major cities in their states to the likes of New york,Dubai,etc. But the challenge here is that most Nigerians have little or no education or enlightenment and some of those who are enlightened,as a result of greed, have made up their minds to pay no attention to the urban planning master plan of each location. And this has been weakening urban development whenever there is an attempt on construction.
There are three basic activities that contribute to the urban and rural development.
1. Expansion of existing roads
2. Introduction of new roads
3. Construction of other social amenities like hospitals,etc
But based on how we build in Nigeria without studying what the future holds for that location we are building on,it becomes a sure bet that there must be issues in the future on that location.
I remember how it ended up with the former FCT minister gov El-rufai.
I also remember how lives were displaced out of Lagos because of urbanization. The question is,should government ignore development of both rural and urban areas? No. Of course,it is only a man whose house is destroyed without compensation,that will understand that in his next world,anytime he wants to erect a structure anywhere,that he should check what the master plan says about the future of that land. Personally,I come from a village where everybody is dragging his father's unbuilt land. Therefore,nobody wants to go and buy a new land in a better location. This is common among the less privileged or sometimes,it is done out of pride. This has done nothing but facilitate the annoying clustering of buildings with very little space like 1.5 meters between boundaries,that is if they actually have a fencing wall. Well,that's really bad and of course an inhibition to development. I really pity this villagers though,why?because,those buildings will still be removed by urbanization and it usually leads to crisis,suicide,etc. Even my own house that is sited at the country side in my village,is facing a challenge because government has marked the "drive in and out" concrete connecting the gate of my compound to the street lane for removal. This is because we ignored constructing a gutter under the concrete. Our's is not an issue because our building is not going down but the governor of my state who is presently starting up construction of streets in my village,is already on a ginger to remove many buildings that are obstructing. Currently,he is having a serious set back because he can't expand some roads as he wants because many buildings will go down.
This is why I am encouraging us to please look at the future when building,so that the future won't look at you when it tries to build itself.
About two weeks ago,I was in Owerri for a business meeting at Rock view hotel,it wasn't long people started running around,when I came out from the hotel,I heard the story surrounding the Eke onunwa market which led to the crisis. For me,I have been visiting Owerri city and I know that the market is an ancient and major market there and it is centralized and so always seen by visitors,but it is usually too clustered and dirty for a city. But because it is already there,and the villagers depend on it for livelihood,it has become had to be removed. Theirs' can be justified but you can now understand uneasy it is to start up a new life else where,just because,the government started up a project on your former site. Please,let us educate ourselves and take this issue more serious. Thanks guys.

But if i am right,please why do i always hear that this number of Nigerians are deported from other countries but i have never heard that immigrants from other countries are deported out from Nigeria. Funny enough,the most recent one is that some great number of Nigerians have been deported from Libya. Even Libya. No now.
