Land desertification threatens the survival and development of two-third of countries and regions and one-fifth of the world’s population. However, many countries (with China taking the lead) are taking the initiative to counter desertification. Growing a company of trees in a desert area seems to be a fantasy, but, it’s an actual reality. It is a process that a lot of countries living in desert areas have embraced, for example, UAE and Israel.
Public information shows that China’s desert land area has maintained a net decrease since 2004 for 3 consecutive monitoring periods. In the following article, you’ll find out 3 Chinese deserts that have turned green in recent years.
Desertification in China
China is the country with the largest area of desertification in the world and is severely affected by sandstorms. A quarter of its land is desert. Nearly 40% of the country’s local counties and nearly 25% of the poor population are located in the northwestern sandy areas.
When the desert was at its most rampant, it expanded by almost 10,000 square kilometers every year. Desertification, like a sharp sword, hangs high above this country. China, therefore, experienced lots of severe sandstorms.
In a bid to counter the effect, the country began to research on cost effective means of using science, technology and innovative ideas many years ago. The country’s first desert scientific research station was established in Zhonghe, Ningxia, in 1954. The wheatgrass grid sand control technology was proposed for the first time and was praised by the world.
1] The Kubuqi Desert
It is China’s seventh-largest desert. It has also been designated as a global desert “eco-economic demonstration zone” by the United Nations Environment Program.
At present, one-third of this area has been greened, and the vegetation coverage has increased from 3% 30 years ago to over 53%, and the biodiversity has been significantly restored.
2] The Mu Us Sandy Land
The Mu Us Desert is a miraculous existence. Not only has the desertification not continued to expand, but the ecology is getting better, and it may disappear completely soon. The Mu Us Desert is located between Shaanxi Province and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, covering an area of 42,200 square kilometers.
The Mu Us Desert has more precipitation (250-400 mm), which is conducive to plant growth. It began to accumulate sand from the Tang Dynasty to a vast desert in the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
3] Southern Edge of the Tengger Desert in Gansu
There is a sand barrier of more than 2,000 acres of grass square grids in this area, which has become a solid line of defense against the expansion of desertification. The first eviction Sunday was held yesterday, and three housemates got evicted as a result - a deviation from the previous installment of the popular Reality TV Show.
It is the end of the road for Yerins, Beatrice and Niyi at the Big Brother Naija "Shine Ya Eye" 2021 after they got evicted last night. Apparently, the housemates failed to unveil the wild cards and three of them became the casualties.
The trio got the marching orders after scoring the least votes:
•Beatrice – 12.95% •Niyi – 8.34% •Yerins – 7.29%
Recall that Biggie had earlier told the contestants to fish out the WildCards among them or risk eviction last week. Whitemoney was also nominated for eviction but didn't get the quit notice like his fellow nominees.
But, there was another twist to the show last night. Four new housemates were added.
Here are the new Contestants:
1. Kayvee:
A self acclaimed bad boy who promises to shake things up in the house! He went ahead to kiss "Angel" in his first night during the "Truth or Dare" game after they settled in.
The last preseason match before the La Liga season begins ended in a spectacular way after Barca trashed Juventus in the Gamper Trophy curtain raiser. Juventus were earlier picked to grace the annual fixture this year.
But, of course the match was bitter sweet for football fans because yesterday happened to be that D-DAY when the club's greatest player, Lionel Messi officially said goodbye to his childhood club.
The game started off with Juventus almost getting the upper hand, taking the ball to the Catalans when the referee blew the whistle.
However, FC Barcelona was able to surmount the early pressures and launched a counter of their own. Demir received the ball from Juventus half and instantly played a pass across to the advancing Depay.
The Netherland player quickly moved the ball forward to the opponents box before burying the ball inside the back of the net in the 3rd minute of the game to give Barca a 1-0 lead in the opening half.
Both teams pressured each other from that moment, and Barca would have added their second of the night if not for a close offside call on Griezmann; Demir already scored the goal but it was disallowed.
In the second half of the game, Barca mounted counters and the pressing got them a corner kick. The resultant kick was headed into the back by Braithwaite who towered above everyone else in the area to hammer the ball past Shezny.
Ronald Koeman had to make key changes in the second half when Juventus started taking the upper hand and looked like they were going to get a goal. His changes were on the spot, and in the final minutes of the match, Riqui Puig pulled a golazo with a powerful shot from his left foot. It was a wonderful goal for a memorable day.
The match ended 3-0 in favour of Barca. It was a wonderful game, with a lot of team effort. But, much thanks will go to Neto (Man of the Match) who continuously stopped goal bound attempts, especially from Cristiano Ronaldo.
Griezmann was also instrumental in the game, controlling the attack as well as tracking back whenever he can to help in defense. The team will now shift attention to the upcoming league campaign.
The exit of Lionel Messi from FC Barcelona is still a shock to most fans. In their defense, the Catalan giants has stated that "financial and structural obstacles" prevented the Argentine from continuing with them.
Earlier today, Messi went live in a Press conference and confirmed the exit, crying as he did so. He said -
"This year, my family and myself were convinced that we were going to stay in our home. That was what we wanted the most but unfortunately, today I am here to say goodbye after many years, my whole life here. I was only 13 years old when I arrived here."
Unfortunately, the Argentine wizard will no longer be playing for La Blaugrana in the foreseeable future due to circumstances beyond him, FC Barcelona and La Liga.
There's been concerns in some corners, with some fans suggesting why the six (6) times Balon D'Or winner couldn't play free for a single season. According to them, it would have been enough time for Barca to have weathered it's financial storm.
