The Executive Governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode, has said the late Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, was as an enigmatic artiste who used his musician to fight bad governance. Governor Ambode stated this during the inauguration of the ‘Liberation Statue’ in honour of Fela, erected at Allen Roundabout in Ikeja. Gov. Ambode said apart from challenging people to free their minds of all inhibitions and actualise their true potential, the late music icon voluntarily turned his back on a life of comfort and privilege. He said, “The phenomenon that the world knows as Fela was deeply rooted in the evolution of Lagos State. The story of music, art, entertainment and tourism in Lagos and Nigeria cannot be told without an eloquent mention of the Abami eda. “On this day, October 15, which would have been Fela’s 79th birthday, the government and people of Lagos State celebrate Fela with the inauguration of this ‘Liberation Statue.’ It has been 20 years since he passed on, but the memories he left us with remain evergreen. Today we celebrate a man who voluntarily turned his back on a life of comfort and privilege, and took up his saxophone as a weapon to fight for the liberation of our people from neo-colonialism and bad governance. Policemen attached to the Area G Police Command, Lagos State have arrested one Saka Akonda for impregnating his step-daughter, 13. Akonda 36, a furniture maker, residing at Obawole, Iju, Lagos State, was arrested following a complaint filed by the girl’s paternal uncle. Akonda, who was dragged before the Magistrate Court in Ogba, said he is “in love” with the firl. He expressed shocked that the police could arrest him, even after he had settled the matter amicably with the girl’s biological father. Akonda, a father of two, said he has accepted responsibility for the underage girl’s pregnancy, stressing that he was willing and ready to take good care of her. He said: “Everything would have been okay, but it’s the girl’s father’s brother that is causing problem. "He was the person that encouraged the girl’s father to arrest me. Even when my wife said we should abort the girl’s pregnancy, I kicked against it. “I was afraid for her life. I don’t want her to die. I have been sponsoring the girl’s education since my wife came with her to my house. “Her father appreciated my effort on the girl.” Akonda said the police officer that arrested him requested the sum of N50,000 to settle the case with the girl’s father, but that he could only raise N10,000. He said: “Right now I’m begging the girl’s father to remember that I had been caring for the girl for long. Most times, her father doesn’t care for her.” Akonda said his wife left him after he was arrested by the police. The girl’s uncle, Oladele Rasheed, 52, a driver, said the girl’s mother left his brother’s house five years ago to marry Akonda. Rasheed said: “The man who impregnated the little girl married my brother’s wife. “The woman abandoned her husband to go and live with this useless man, who has impregnated mother and daughter. “I want the law to take its due course and punish him for his wickedness. Even if my elder brother backtracks on this matter, I shall not. I would see this case to the end.” News from: https://www.urbanng.com/2017/10/man-36-impregnates-13-year-old-step-daughter.html?m=1 |

The Nigeria Music Scene has always been a very vibrant one. That has always be the case, even before the Nigeria got her independence from Great Britain back in 1960. It had an active social culture. Buoyed by her multicultural heritage, there has always been a democracy of verities sounds. As is to be expected, all the different tribes and ethnic groups have their peculiar styles of music. As it is in other countries, Many of these genres of music are distinguished by the kind of instruments that are used to make them. For example, Highlife music requires Horns and Guitars, while Fuji Music requires Drums but it has been modernise by the likes of K1, Pasuma and the likes and some other musical elements has been added. Nigeria Artist like Flavour and Runtown are currently propagating the gospel of highlife around the world even though it has been modified in several ways. Highlife is said to have originated from Ghana but it was popularised in Nigeria by artistes like Osita Osadebe, Victor Uwaifo, Victor Olaiya, among others. It still has mass appeal, and both the young and old find pleasure in moving to its rhythm. It must however be noted that many of these genres of music have evolved over time, and successive generations have left their different imprimaturs on them, so much that some of them now sound differently from what they used to be. The kind of fuji music that can be heard on the streets of Lagos today is different from what it used to sound like about 50 years ago. Fuji is now more sophisticated and diversified. It is also interesting to note that the origin of fuji can be traced back to the 1960s, which means that genre of music is about the same age with Nigeria. Some of the prominent proponents of fuji making waves today are K1 de Ultimate, Pasuma, Saheed Osupa, Adewale Ayuba, Obesere. However, some of the new generation music artistes, such as Olamide, Wizkid, 9ice, Reekado Banks, among others, borrow heavily from fuji. The Manchester clubs continued to lead the way in the Premier League, City and United both winning this weekend, while Tottenham kept pace by overpowering Huddersfield and Liverpool lost ground in a draw with Newcastle. Here are 5 things learnt from the English Premier League this weekend: 1: Man City now look like a Guardiola team Many English football fans struggled to suppress their glee last season when Pep Guardiola’s hugely anticipated first campaign as Manchester City manager ended with the damp squib of a third-place finish after heavy defeats against such relative underdogs as Everton and Leicester City. But the dominant nature of City’s 1-0 win at reigning champions Chelsea this ...... 2: Kane a joy and a worry for Spurs England’s Harry Kane is scoring goals for fun for Tottenham Hotspur at the moment, with his double in a 4-0 win against Huddersfield taking his tally to 13 for September for club and country.... 3: Magical Sanchez back in favour With just hours left before the transfer deadline, it appeared certain Alexis Sanchez had played his last game for Arsenal. Sanchez was desperate to join Manchester City and, after refusing to sign a new contract, the Chile forward had finally forced Gunners boss Arsene Wenger to consider selling him. But the deal fell through, putting Sanchez in the difficult position of having to return to Arsenal. ... 3. FANS PRESSURE I met an artiste on Instagram within the week who was privately seeking for my professional advice on his next move. He made mention that the move is being countered by his fans. He went on to explain that he believes dropping a new song would be more beneficial but his fans are asking for a video to his previous track. He then asked for my advice, whether to please his fans or not. This got me asking him some series of questions as I know every single move to be taken is predetermined by some factors like the level of the artiste, how far the music in question (that uthe fans are requesting for a video) went, etc. Then with the answer he gave me I offered my advice. This is business, in business you'll definitely need to please your fans but a times what is best is to surprise them. Be sure you're making the right moves. Don't make moves basically because it'll please your fans. Make moves only because it will help boost your career. 4. COLLEAGUE'S PRESSURE Same is applicable to pressure from colleagues. Every artiste represents a particular brand. A times I see a clique of friends making similar moves because they often share same ideas and indirectly compete with each other. This is totally wrong. You can't be sneezing because your colleague sneezed. Everyone is on a different root. Sex tape, faking ones death, etc might work for some artistes all because their brands accommodates such but not for everyone. Be sure you're making calculated moves. Don't ever make a move because a neighbour made same move... Pt.1 : http://www.urbanng.com/2017/09/what-you-should-never-do-as-up-and-coming-artist-1.html?m=1

College graduation is finally over, and you are about to enter the Real-world you have always dreamed, your first workplace, not to mention bombarding a number of job hunting websites, LinkedIn, industry job boards, or other mediums to land you the first ever job. But let’s not forget you are yet to pass the interview phase. Remember, an interview after the graduation is quite different as compared to the interviews you have given for on-campus jobs or internships. 1. Replying, and not listening to what the interviewer says At the start of an interview, some interviewers follow the strategy of throwing a 2-minute speech regarding the company profile and other introductory information before providing you the chance to respond. This is the chance you need to capture, take notes and focus on every word they say. In order to show affirmation to the interviewer, some candidates like to respond to everything he/she says. However, this can also make the interviewer feel that you aren’t really listening, rather you just like the sound of your own voice. Also, there is a high chance that by repeated commenting you might miss something crucial the interviewer has just stated. It’s better to listen closely to everything the interviewer has to say, you can respond if the professional ask you a question or when there is a natural or prolonged pause in the conversation. 2. Failing to remember the job description The fact doesn’t require further emphasis due to its already high significance, you need to be thoroughly prepared with all the facts of the company’s nature of business, product portfolio, and other vital information drilled in your mind before entering the interview room door. Further, the details of the job description should also be used to explain your qualifications. On the other hand, forgetting to memorize your job description is a one-stop nightmare which gives the impression of unprofessionalism and incompetency. One of the most important questions the interviewer will inquire you with will be how your past job relates to this job. Both you and the HR professional in the room wants your case to grow stronger, but only if you have a clear idea what the company is looking for. This is how you will be able to justify your point on how you can be the best man for the job. Try to memorize the pointers of your job description that consumed most of your workday and you can communicate in the best manner possible. 3. Interested in the company, benefits, less in the role Undoubtedly, it is your first job interview, you’re highly excited and nervous at the same time. But most of the time this excitement is nothing but a mere ‘excitement’, and not for the job. Explaining how well you are informed taking the company details is fine, but the real defining factor is how well you are going to perform the job applied for, rather than getting enticed by the free lunch coupons, a month of annual leaves, education allowance, etc. You can always go with something like, “I am well-aware that ABC has a great culture, besides that I am more intended to perform my XYZ job responsibilities way better than everyone else and contribute through effective ways for enhancing the overall efficiency of the team”. And now is the time to insist your case in a tempting manner. SEE COMPLETE POINTS HERE: https://www.urbanng.com/2017/09/5-major-mistakes-graduates-first-job-interviews.html?m=1 |
