Top 10 things to know about the Bekwarra people of Cross River State.

1. They have a unique language called Bekwarra. The word Bekwarra is both a name of a tribe, their language and a name of a local Government. Last time I checked there is nothing like Igbo or Hausa local Government. So this make the Bekwarra people unique.

2. They are descendant of Agba who is also the progenitor of Obudu and Bekwarra Agba. It is a very explicit history as they proudly refer to each others as brothers.

3. The Local government has produced a deputy senator, Commissioner of Justice, minister of Justice, House of representative members etc.

4. It has 10 political wards. Afrike 1, Afrike 2, Beten, Gakem, Ibiaragidi, Nyanya, Ugboro, Otukpuru, Ukpah and Abouchiche

5. It has annual cultural festival called the ipem ihihe (new yam) festival held every first Saturday of September.

6. It has five market days. Ugbada, uchaga, ugidi, udama and achaya.

7. It's headquarters is in Abouchiche.

8. They people are Christians majorly Catholics with other predominant churches like Living faith, Redeem, Dunamis, Assemble of God and Indigenous churches like holiness and power church, Rapture power outreach ministry etc.

9. Their major occupation is farming and some pocket of them are civil servants. They farm crops like Groundnut in Gakem, Rice in Ugboro etc.

10. The Nigeria civil war of 1967-1970 began in Bekwarra local Government. The aftermath and devastating effect of the Biafra war cannot be over emphasized.

The people of Northern cross River senatorial district took to social media by making mockery of an alleged candidate that contested in the previous bye election Dr Steven odey.

Other senators were inaugurated while he was asked to leave without being inaugurated.

He contested under the umbrella of PDP along side Jarigbe Agom. Many said he never won the primaries but was robbed in since he was the governor's boy.

So the PDP family in cross River North is divided as others are for Steven odey and others are for Jarigbe Agom.


Today in Abuja, Steven odey went with his cabals thinking he would be inaugurated then he would celebrate double blessings.... But he was not inaugurated

And today was also his birthday.

Bekwarra Local Government Chairman Dr. Jospehat Owan Emeka presented SUMEC GENERATOR to his constituent the great people of Abouchiche political ward of Bekwarra local Government area of Cross River State to enable them pump ⛽ water.

This is coming as a result of the epileptic power challenge face by the Bekwarra people since 2010.

THE GAKEM PEOPLE OF UPPER CROSS RIVER VALLEY.

Gakem is one of the most populated political ward in Bekwarra local government of Cross River State. It is bounded by the Beten to the North, konshisha and Vandeikya Local government of Benue state to the South respectively.

The community is known for her bravery and warlike which are justified in their dance called "agaba", their war history and several others.

They are said to have migrated from Bendi (Ebeni) in present day Obanliku local government of cross River State. Till present, there is a vacant land refer to as " Gakem " and their elders often times pay visit to Gakem when the Gakem people are facing challenges, are in need etc. Some do ask the community to send some people to go and occupy their vacant land.

The community also boosts of powerful men like late Ushie Amia, late Anthony Akobi, late Abu Ayaga, Late Michael Oko, late Achoda Ojiji, late Olom Ipison, late Achoda Elege and several others.

Gakem as it is called and most times refers to as Igakem by their Bekwarra brothers, the community has thirteen (13) political units with each headed by a chief who is subject and answerable to the Ushie Kakpa (Ushie ebeshe) who is the overall king in the entire community.that is the Local Government.

Gakem has 35 gazetted villages, with 2 clans which are Uduo and Atibulum clans. It also has thirteen political(13) wards which include; Illah, Adachi, Ushara, Akaraba (Abualogu) Agbara, Akuriyi, Inyie ukan, Inyie-alibi, Atiambi, Ichiakpo, Atibulum, Ayogoba and Abukpem.

Amongst the thirteen units, the first three (3) sons of Gakem are; Illah, Atiambi and Abukpem. These three sons are mostly at the forefront of rituals, prayers, decision making etc in the community.

Gakem is the only community in Bekwarra and Cross River at large whose name is found in global war history and other military history documentary because it was where the Biafra war of 6th July, 1967 began. In war map, Gakem is underlined in red symbolizing danger meaning the civil war began there. Some books where the aforementioned can be found is "my command" By Olusangu Obasanjo.

The community has a very fertile soil suitable for cultivation of groundnut(anangkere) benniseed (anang) melon (atan) potato (achaka) cassava (ologo) such as idanwoli, ushie akra, etc. And several others. The community also produces palm wine (ebetuo) in large quantities basically the Akurinyi and Abukpem people of Gakem.

The community also has a totem called the "anyiribom" Whom the people belief to be their spiritual totem that assisted them in fighting and winning wars against their enemies. For that, the Gakem people don't eat the bird, and some communities like akurinyi are not allowed to eat some snakes as well.

The community has produces potential and industrious men and women namely, Prof. Anthony Eneji commissioner, Hon. Signor Omang Idiege (commissioner), Hon. Idagu Agaji (Honourable member), professor Ipuole Achoda, Bar. John Ushie, Dr. Justin Ogodo, Bar. Don DC Enamhe, Rev. Father Oko Ajor, Rev. Father Ushie Eshidenang, Evang(Bar) John Elege (G.O.Rapture power outreach ministry) , Sir Ushie Hilary (CEO Hilary table water, Hillary estate etc), Dr. John Odey, Doctor Bernard Okachi, Sir Don Adie Christopher Ebodo(CEO Rochris college), Mr. Afula (Unique school) and several others counting.

True life story with Ushie Sunday.

A student of a very renowned University of Agric Makurdi was picked up by a man. (This is a routine for runs ladies in campus)

The lady entered the man's clean car and they drove off. After the incidence, bit was the lady that narrated the story how they both arrived the man's mansion. She described the mansion as heaven on earth.

She further explained that after they finished the business for the night (sex), she woke up realizing she was unconscious. When she realized herself, she discovered she was ontop of a grave in a graveyard (burying ground). She began to shout until the graveyard attendants rushed to her and asked her what brought her and she explained in details how it happened.

It was obvious she slept with a ghost. M

Note: we should be careful with people we don't know.. Am not in a position to judge the kind of business you do for a living because I have no right to judge but we have to be very careful. Most people say ones someone died he can never resurface or be found anywhere again.

I now want to put it to the house to share your experience and stories about ghost.

Assistant commissioner of police serving in Borno state axed down by unknown gunmen in Calabar the capital of Cross River State as he was returning from Borno to reunite with his family today.

It is also alleged that the ACP is a relation to the deputy governor of cross River State.

Bekwarra to the world

OTOM Regina Agbo, popularly known as (Gina praiz) was born on 5th December, 1996 in Nyanya-Ulim of Bekwarra Local Government Area of Cross River State.

She indicated interest in music after Secondary School Education (SSCE) in 2017.

In the course of her journey and love for Music, she met her favorite radio presenter in Abuja “MR SUGAR SUGAR” of 104.5 LOVE FM ABUJA who by his good deed brought her to the stage.

She recently dropped a debut album titled “UPLIFTED GRACE” in July 2019.

All songs on the project was produced by E19 Of the album, here, she have this praise medley titled “THANKSGIVING” that glorifies the power of God in her native dialect “Bekwarra” she expressed her gratitude to God for his power that is at work in me.

She is currently based in Abuja the country's capital.

Title: WHY CRICKET (iribua'te) HAS A BLACK MOUTH

Once upon a time, they live iribua'te and his best friend "ikputum itang" They were very good friends who lives peacefully until something happened one day.

Before then, anytime the two are going out they normally go together because iribua'te would always back ikputum itang when they want to cross a big river since he was allergic to rain and water.

So that day, they went to visit a friend and iribua'te assist ikputum itang to cross since it was their regular routine. On their return, they had misunderstanding on the way and iribua'te cross the river angrily living ikputum itang at the other side of the river.

Ikputum itang begged and asked for forgiveness yet iribua'te refused and the cloud was gathering for rain to fall and you know that would be suicidal for ikputum itang if he continues to wait. So iribua'te advised him to give it a try.

Iribua'te asked him to put his right leg on the water, he did and the right leg dissolve into the water, he asked him to put his left leg he did and same thing happened. He continued to deceive him till his body dissolve to his head and Ikputum itang began to cry and sing "iwaá ami iyi....... Iwaá gbada", " iwaá ami iyi....... Iwaá gbada", "iwaá ami iyi....... Iwaá gbada", until he completely " Waá" (Dissolve) inside the river.

Iribua'te ran home immediately and explain what happen vindicating himself to Ikputum itang family and Ikputum itang children planned secretly to burn iribua'te alive. So since iribua'te was beaten by the rain, he asked for fire to warm himself which they provided for him. As he was warming himself, Ikputum itang children came and pushed him and put his mouth into the fire until he told them the truth of the story.

That is why iribua'te (cricket) has a black mouth till date.

It is time for Bekwarra stories.

Title: WHY TORTOISE� HAVE A SCRATCH BACK.

Once upon the time, there was a feast organised by one wealthy Bekwarra man in the sky. Fortunately, Atuku (Tortoise) heard of the feast but he has no wing to attend the feast so he had to inform his friends that has wing to assist him.

He called Anem, Iribukpa, Akan, upu, anyiribom and other class of unwanyin and informed them of the feast in the sky. They all agreed and obliged to attend and also to borrow him one of their wing each.

Atuku who was a very cunning and greedy type has done underground survey by asking the Bekwarra people the meaning of "all of us" And he suggests they all should change their names which they all did and he said his name is "Amin wuo".

The day came and they all unanimously borrowed him their wing and they joyfully embark on the great journey and arrived the sky on time.

It was time for sharing of snacks groundnut paste " Ishibe" and garden egg "ititung". The waitress brought it and said the snacks are for " Amin wuo ". They collect the snacks and gave to Atuku hoping and waiting for theirs.

It was time for drinks they brought all kinds of drinks including " Irimi", ebetuo, "onyin dia dia". And said it was for " Amin wuo " Atuku rushed and collect the drinks. Most of his friends began to lose their patience especially when food was shared and was still given to Amin wuo. So they decided to secretly ask a passerby the meaning of "Amin wuo" And they were told is "all of us". It was front there they knew they were deceived. They all collect their wing and fly angrily back to earth leaving tortoise there in the sky.

It was only Anem who agreed to take tortoise message to his family that they should pack all the soft things in the room and keep outside so that he will jump from sky and land on it. Anem (�) agreed but when he came to earth he told atuku's family their father said they should pack all the hard things in the room and keep outside which they did as instructed.

The following day, Atuku fall from the sky like a fallen angel and landed on the hard materials and his body pile instantaneous. That is why tortoise has a scratch back till date.

Lesson: Greed and Glutton doesn't pay.
