My car engine oil seems to be black and due for an over haul the price of packaged oil is expensive so am thinking of buying the normal roadside oil to do its overhaul. Will there be any implication? its a Volkswagen passat. please advice.

Yes there would be implications if you use the wrong specification of oil for your car. Some don't notice it immediately is why they think they can get away with pouring any type of oil in their car engine.

Don't settle for less. Love your car so it can treat you right. You don't want it breaking down when you need it most. Depending on the year your car was manufactured, you can use engine oil that can last you months before you need another change. It might look expensive but worth it in the long run.

To choose the proper type of oil for your vehicle, refer to your manufacturer’s manual because that is where you can get the right viscosity oil e.g. 0W30, 0W20, 5W20, 5W30, 10W30, etc. In cases where you can’t find the manual, it’s also common to see the recommended oil printed on the oil cap under the hood or you can ask google.

Any oil can be SN but it is suitable for Nothing. On the american petroleum quality institute, duramax synthetic blend is what is certified as meeting the specification of a synthetic blend but not duramax full synthetic . It has not been certified even though the producer of duramax is a full supporter of the institute. Continue selling for the time being, when we have cleansed the local market, then we shall focus on the foreign brands. Milemaster is rated for its claims, duramax synthetic blend is also rated. Coastal oil is rated too. If duramax been limited on General motors cars, how will it work well on a range,bmw and benz brands?

I beg your pardon sir not any oil can be SN. You can refer to the API site for more clarification (www.api.org/products-and-services/engine-oil/eolcs-categories-and-documents/oil-categories). The status SN is current (see attached picture) and was Introduced in October 2010, designed to provide improved high temperature deposit protection for pistons, more stringent sludge control, and seal compatibility. API SN with Resource Conserving matches ILSAC GF-5 by combining API SN performance with improved fuel economy, turbocharger protection, emission control system compatibility, and protection of engines operating on ethanol-containing fuels up to E85 (As defined by API)

Also because DuraMAX or any other Engine oil is dexos approved does not mean "it can only be used in General Motors Engine". It means General Motor (GM) has approved the use of the oil in their cars. dexos1™ is designed for use with gasoline engines and replaces GM-LL-A-025, GM6094M and GM4718M.
dexos2™ is designed for use with light-duty diesel engines and replaces GM-LL-B-025 and GM-LL-A-025.

Again if you look on the API page properly you would see that both the DuraMAX Synthetic blend and Full Synthetic are listed on the API site as certified. We are not disputing that there are other brands out there as good.

I guess you should be able to use this links I have given you so far to work more on your research and to help you on cleaning the Engine Oil market because we are very sure we would benefit from the cleansing.

Duramax synthetic blend is what is certified by the american petroleum quality institute and not the duramax synthetic. I have used the oil on some occasions but it does not excite the engine the way mobil 1 usa or castrol edge usa does. But your global atf is good. We will soon begin a war against substandard oil and we are begining with our local oil companies and then to foreign oils especially those with the so called ACEA certifications as we just learnt that lub companies certify themselves claiming what they are not. Motorists beware of oils in sheep clothing, they are ravenous wolves destroying your engines and make life miserable. #enough of yeye oil#

You have not checked the page properly. I did a screenshot of the page for you with the licence expiration date to make it easier for you. I am glad you have used the ATF and you confirm it is good. That is same with the Engine oil also.

If anyone is selling oil and it has not been certified by American quality pertroleum institute, ignore it. Just google the institute, and if the oil is not there, run from the oil no matter the packaging.

Automobiles need a lot of maintenance to keep them healthy (running smoothly). The simplest thing a car owner can do is to ensure that your car stays healthy. With that in mind there are five (5) fluids you should check on a regular basis. Most of your car’s faults are preventive and requires not too much of your skill to check or notice. Pretty much anyone can check the fluids. Doing so on regular basis keeps your car up and running, and reduces cost of repair. Knowing the basis of your car also empowers you so that when you are getting any maintenance on your car, you are not swindled into flushing and replacing a bunch of fluids that is not needed.

All you need to know is where to look for these fluids. We are often reminded to “check your fluids often” but we don’t really understand what “often” means. We know every car is a little different but the below INSTRUCTIONS should apply pretty universally

Engine oil:

Chances are the first thing you learn about your car is how to check your oil level. You have to do this in every car and pretty much every car has the same process in checking it.

Most cars are simple in that area. Pop up your hood, find the oil dipstick, pull it out and wipe it down with a cloth, repeat that again and you will have your oil level. If it is in the safe level continue on your happy way. If it’s not, you need to add more depending on the age of the car. You may or may not need to add oil pretty often. If your car burns through a lot of oil, it’s worth going to a mechanic.

How often to check it: With modern cars you are save to check once every month.

How often to replace it: This depends on the car manufacturer and year. “3000 miles on every 6 months” saying doesn’t really apply presently. Instead, you check your owner’s manual for the manufacturer’s recommendations for changing your engine oil.

Transmission Fluids:

Your TRANSMISSION FLUID is what keeps the gear on your car moving smoothly. You can check your transmission fluids the same way you check your engine oil level, except that the car should be running when you do this. Unlike the engine oil, the transmission fluid is part of the closed system, so it should never be low. If it is, take it to your mechanic.

Instead of the volume, the quality of the fluid should be the main concern. The fluid should be red and not smell burned. If the fluid smells burnt or is brown in color, it’s time to replace it

How often to check: Monthly

How often to replace it: This varies from car to car and depends on transmission type but it’s typically between every 50,000 miles to 100,000 miles

Coolant:

Coolant also known as Antifreeze, keeps your car running cool. If you ever run out or low of coolant, your car is probably going to overheat. The coolant is placed inside your radiator and you can typically check it by removing the radiator cap when the cap is cooled (never check it when it’s hot i.e. when the car is running) and looking inside. Once you remove the cap you should see a line the coolant should come up to. If it’s low you can add more, but make sure you add the same type of coolant currently in the car.

How often to check it: At least twice in a year. It is easy enough to glance at whenever you pop open your hood.

How often to replace it: 2-3 years (If genuine /quality coolant is used)

Brake fluid:

Your brake fluids are part of a closed system so you should never be low on it. With that in mind, it is worth checking it to make sure it’s clean. Brake fluids keep your car working properly, so if they ever feel a little off, checking the brake fluid is usually the first step, you can do this by checking the brake fluid reservoir on the driver side of your car. You can check the level just by looking at the outside of the container. The fluid should be a golden color. If it’s brown, it means it is time to replace it.

How often to check it: When you change your oil.

How often to replace: Every 2 years (if quality brake fluid is used)

Power steering fluid:

Steering fluids help your steering stay smooth and easy. When the power steering fluids get low, you might feel “creaking” in the steering wheel or hear some weird sounds. To check it, you need to pop the hood and find the reservoir. Power steering Fluids doesn’t usually drop a lot, so if it is low, you need to take your car to a mechanic or look for a leak.

How often to check it: Once a month

How often to change it: Double check your car Manual to know yours
