What Do People Do To Get Out Of The Failure Zone? This kind of question always reminds me of a young man named Jack. Jack wasn’t what anyone would consider the brightest bulb in the chandelier. He got used to the bitter taste of not being good enough from a very young age. He failed his primary school exams twice. When he moved to Middle School, he failed three more times. Applying to college was no different. He applied 10 times to Harvard. Failed every single time. He failed two more times before finally being accepted at Hangzhou Teachers University. After graduating, he tried to get a job. He applied to be a police officer. “No, you’re no good.” He was the only one out of 5 applicants to get rejected. And that’s not even the worst part. When KFC came to his country, he applied to get a job there. Twenty-three people were accepted out of the 24 that applied. Jack wasn’t. Eventually, he landed a job as an English teacher at Hangzhou Dianzi University, with a salary of 12$ a month. In 1995, Jack had just started a translation business when he got a call to go to Seattle as an interpreter for a trade delegation. It was then that he was first introduced to the Internet. Computers were pretty rare in China at the time. Jack had never even touched a keyboard before that. He did a couple of searches and found out that there was no data about China. It was then that he decided to do something with this Internet. He went back home and borrowed 2.000$ to set up a tech company. Some ups and downs there. He was offered a joint venture with China Telecom but ended up resigning from his position due to a complete lack of control over the business. In 1999, he gathered 18 people in his apartment and spoke to them for two hours about this vision he had about an e-commerce company. Everyone put their money on the table. That got him $60,000 to start again. He called the company Alibaba. He went on to make a bunch of other mistakes which almost killed Alibaba back in the early 2000s. Each of those mistakes taught him something. Just like all his many, many failures before that. Jack Ma is now one of the richest men in China. Alibaba is worth over $95B. So that’s what entrepreneurs do when they fail. They learn, get back up and go at it again. And again. And again. For as long as it takes. I’ll wrap this up with a few words from Jack: “If you don’t give up, you still have a chance. Giving up is the greatest failure.” Thanks for reading. |

You manage to apply for the job and finally you were scheduled for an interview. The day finally arrived but you feel as if you are not fully prepared. You entered the hall for the interview and suddenly your heart starts to beat faster than usual, your mouth feels dry. You hear yourself altering something but you know you are not in control of your words. Does that look like a situation you have experienced? You begin to wonder, ” Why do I have this fear for job interview? ” In this post, I will demystify job interview and give a practical guide on how you can overcome it. Reasons Why People Fear Job Interview a) The Fear of Failure: The fear of failure is also referred to atychiphobia. It is the fear that hold us down accompany with mental picture of defect and rejection. We fear the outcome of our failure and what it might do to us. We go into the interview with an uncontrollable stench of fear that our lives are in the hands of the interviewers and if we are not handed the job, we are toast. We try to fight back the thought, but the harder we try, the stronger it becomes. Worst still, we hear everywhere that there is no job and if you want to get a job, you have to ‘ know somebody that knows somebody. ‘ And since this job interview came along, we fear that losing it might bring us back to the cycle of job hunting. b) Fear of the unknown: You have prepared-or not- you have taken your time to research about the company; but suddenly you start thinking about possible questions they might ask and how to answer them. You surf the internet, you found difficult interview questions and how to as them as a pro. Still, you feel you are not prepared. You feel something is missing. You fear that they might ask you what you don’t know. You fear that they might ask you what you didn’t prepare for. c) Fear of rejection: Nobody likes rejection. It doesn’t feel pleasant at all. We don’t like to hear “We are sorry, we don’t want you,” or opening our mail to see ” Sorry, we can not continue with your application…” It hurt our hearts and sometimes make us feel ‘less’. But,“The truth is that it may have nothing to do with you. It has to do with the interviewer/company getting the most for the dollar. And, there are tons of extenuating circumstances,” Carole Martin posited. So how do we overcome the fear of interview? It’s normal to feel a little tensed especially when someone wearing a stone cold face is scrutinizing your resume, mannerism, appearance and grammar. But the little truth is that no one can intimidate you without your permission, either psychologically or physically. a) Change of Perception Have you ever wondered why the company called you for an interview and not someone else? A good number of people applied for the same position but couldn’t make it to the interview stage except you, and maybe a handful number of people. The gospel truth is that the company needs you and what you have to offer. The interview is just to validate what you said you are in the resume. So how do you change you perception? YOU VISUALIZE. Negative thought has a way of dampening your performance even before you start. Nothing gets to you without first passing through your mind. So if you want to ace the interview, you visualize yourself doing that. b) Be Prepared Yes, you have visualize the interview and how you will overcome it. The next step is to prepare. Here’s how to prepare for an interview: 1. Take your time to carefully read and re-read the job description. The job description tells you what the company wants, the skills and attribute they are looking for. 2. Perform and in-depth research about the company and the role you are applying for. Know what the job entails. 3. Conduct a mock interview: Conducting a mock interview goes a long way in helping you know the possible interview questions – uncommon and uncommon – and how you can answer them. 4. Possible questions to ask the interviewers: Most interviewers feel confident about candidates who ask relevant and thoughtful questions about the company and how they can help the company grow. c. Don’t appear desperate No company or organization will give you a job because you are desperate. Think about interview like you plan going on a date. A show of desperation will put the other person on high alert. You want to impress not to appear desperate. Also, your future doesn’t depend on only that interview/position. It depends on you. It is presumed that an average person in an office receives more than 100 emails every weekdays. They scan and skim these email and probably trash long and confusing emails. So what are the brilliant ways to write emails that busy people will read and respond to? 5 Brilliant Ways To Write Emails That Busy People Will Read And Respond To a) Determine your objective- do you want to inform or influence If you don’t have a well thought out objective, you might confuse your reader who is apparently busy. So think about the main objective and adhere to it. If you want to influence, persuade or inform, stick to it. However, we do advise amateurs that using email is not really the best way to influence and persuade. Communication that rely on email may experience an uphill battle that a phone call can resolve at ease. b) Anticipate your reader’s questions and provide concise answers If you send them a mail without envisioning your reader’s possible questions, the email may not achieve it’s purpose. Say you are giving out some information, think about questions like-deadline, the people involved, budget etc. Take out time to jot down possible questions that pop on your mind and turn your response into some important key points in your mail. Trust me, when you anticipate possible questions and provide answers to them, you will save your reader a lot of time eliminating the need for an additional back and forth. c) Start on a personal note The person on the other side is human and deserve some form of courtesy. Statements like “hope you are well,” “hope you are fine” are not bad. What this does is that it strikes some emotional connection between the sender and the receiver. However, when emailing strangers, you can start by saying, ” I am a huge fan of your article that says XYZ,” or “I am a huge fan of your work that say XYZ.” This makes the reader feels important and appreciated. This is majorly to warm the conversation. d) Logically itemize your ideas in groups This will help your reader find a logical flow in your message. Itemizing your ideas into topics, timeline, pros and cons, call to action will make your mail organize and professional. Another advantage is that it reduces grammar and punctuation errors, saves time, and help display your analytical skills. e) Read your mail twice before sending Don’t make the mistake of clicking the send button without at least reading your mail twice. You don’t want to give the impression that your are not meticulous with details or you have a poor grammar. Just one more reading can make a great difference. SOURCE |
