New Coach Roy Hodgson will be looking to make a statement as he prepares for his first Premier League game in charge of Liverpool against Arsenal.

Both sides will be hoping to show their title credentials on Merseyside as they look to challenge the top two of Chelsea and Manchester United. Arsenal did the double over Liverpool last season and they will be seeking to extend that record against Liverpool.

Striker Fernando Torres recently committed his future but would still miss the match with a groin injury but David Ngog or Dirk Kuyt are expected to start in attack for the home side with new signing Joe,set to play in a supporting role behind the front man.

Fellow new signings Milan Jovanovic  & Poulsen could as well get the nod in Hodgson’s starting XI.

Arsene Wenger is yet to make a choice over selecting Van Persie or Captain Cesc Fabregas (who both featured for their countries in the WC final). Arsenal are definitely without injured duo Nicklas Bendtner and Johan Djourou, while Denilson, Alex Song  and Abou Diaby face late fitness tests.

Summer signings Marouane Chamakh and Laurent Koscielny are both expected to make their debuts.

There’s been talk of Arsene making a move for Mark Schwarzer all week as he looks to end his goalkeeping woes, but HEY! it's Wenger, so don't bet your mortgage.

Liverpool: Reina, Johnson, Carragher, Skrtel, Agger, Kuyt, Gerrard, Lucas, Jovanovic, Cole, Ngog.

The last campaign saw these two heavyweights slugging it out towards the top of the table and more of the same is expected this time around, Spurs eventually pipped City to fourth spot and it is they who are currently preparing themselves for a shot at the UEFA Champions League.

It has, however, been a summer of mass transfer activity at Eastland’s and Roberto Mancini is expected to have City in the title mix come May. Not!

Worryingly for Spurs, as they look to burst out of the blocks, they have won only two of their last nine opening day fixtures.

On a more positive note, they have won 11 of their last 12 top flight encounters with City and the last six in a row at White Hart Lane.

Champions Chelsea open the defence of their crown at home to newly-promoted West Bromwich Albion. The Blues finished the campaigned with the highest margin of goals and beat Manchester United to the title by just a point.

Chelsea could be without first choice goalkeeper Petr Cech, Striker Didier Drogba (DD) who faces a late fitness test after undergoing hernia surgery, Frank Lampard who hurt his ankle in England’s 2-1 against Hungary on Wednesday.

Chelsea have made a habit of hitting the ground running in recent years, and will be looking to win their opening game for the ninth successive season. The last time the Blues failed to win their first league game was in 2001, when current West Brom boss Roberto Di Matteo was part of the playing squad at Stamford Bridge (De Ja Vu?)

Carlotti admits some of his squad are a little match-rusty, but says the midweek internationals will have helped them improve their match fitness.

On the other hand, West Bromwich are optimistic that Graham Dorrans' groin injury will not prevent him from starting at Stamford Bridge.
Defender Pablo Ibanez could feature after overcoming a hamstring problem.

We need these things to happen, but at the same time, we must support our club and gaffer as we go into the new season.

We want trophies, we've been patient for 5 years and I feel our usual excuses don't apply now - we now have cash to spend and don't really need to break the bank to get in suitable quality. We just need to go out there and get it done.

For crying out loud Arsenal is one of the top ten best team in the whole world yet we can't boast of an outstanding topclass Goalie,always have to settle for a keeper who turns ball into his own net,under slight pressure fumbles (flappyiaski + Alumni) or even a worldclass CB(we have to settle for Djourou who can't stay fit to save his own life).Am telling you today if AW quit the only players any top team would bid for are FAB4,Sagna,Song,RVP,A23,Nasri & lastly maybe Eboue.This explains alot about the quality we have in our squad.

Its as if yu're reading my mind over the internet, most arsenal fans these days only see the bad things in the team and not the many good things, its a bit of a shame really cos I am very proud to say I support this team and to be honest, pound for value, there are not many managers in Arsene's league, the only manager who had done consistently what Arsene has done is David Moyes of Everton and Hodgson did it with Fulham for a single season and remains to be seen if he can be consistent.

I'll see how well Fergie does with his newfound love for signing of 'Unknowns', the first player he started with (Manucho of Angola) didn't turn out right, the jury is out on Biram Diouf but Chicharito looks likely to. The new dawn is about to break at Arsenal, when some of us were touting the talent coming through at Arsenal last season, some people thot we had high fever, now even the English establishment is acknowledging the quality of players coming through.

Some people only see things after they have happened while others are able to project ahead, Arsenal is on the right track and I'm eagerly looking forward to this season, something tells me its reward time.
