@mnavy
You just exposed you ignorance by your post. You said it yourself that you joined the Army as an Other Rank. What do you think other rank means? Did you read the terms and conditions of your service? If you wanted your degree to count, you should have joined as an officer or wait until you're are commissioned, that's if you deserve it. Do you know what "channel of communication" is and means? Where in the world do superiors take orders from inferiors? It obvious your joined the army with the wrong reasons and expectations and this is a good case study for those thinking of joining the armed forces.

I suppose your frustration explains your beclouded thoughts about what goes on in the academy, I can understand that. But it takes a real man with guts, courage and intelligence to survive the academy. If you doubt it, try it but don't defame it!
Nice one Oga Pele. This blood still flows in you. Am proud of you.
Just leave him, he will never understand.

@ mnavy
You got your acts and priorities wrong. Thank God you are no longer in the system. Our regimentation is not for everyone, its only for the sane and sober minded. Am not blaming you for taking the wrong approach to vent and voice out your frustrations. I believe you read and understood the terms and conditions well b4 you appended your signature. Those in your shoes who understand the rules will not throw caution to the wind to make such callous and cynical comments. You cant reap where you did not sow and the laws cannot be changed because of you. You would have come into the armed forces through the officers' corp than an other rank, if that is your problem. The difference is clear, you know. That the president has a Bachelors degree does not mean he should take orders from the Governor of the Central Bank who is a professor, Lai Lai! Your education does not make you the superior in all cases. Only the responsibility vested on you by the law does. So my brother, quit hating and look for elsewhere to hang your frustrations and disappointments because you are aiming at the wrong target. The sooner you expunge that thinking from your head, the better and farther you will go in whatever you have decided to do after a disappointing sojourn in the service of your fatherland.

Phones / Things U Never Knew Your Cell Phone Could Do by VAdmiral(m): 3:18pm On Jan 17, 2008
There are a few things that can be done in times of grave emergencies. Your mobile phone can actually be a life saver or an emergency tool for survival. Check out the things that you can do with it.

1. Emergency:

The Emergency Number worldwide for Mobile Phones is 112. If you find yourself out of coverage area of your mobile network and there is an emergency, dial 112 and the mobile will search any existing network to establish the emergency number for you, and interestingly this number 112 can be dialled even if the keypad is locked. Try it out.

2. Unlocking Your Car:

Have you locked your keys in the car? Does your car have remote keys? This may come in handy someday. Good reason to own a cell phone. If you lock your keys in the car and the spare keys are at home, call someone at home on his cell phone from your cell phone. Hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have the person at your home press the unlock button, holding it near the mobile phone on his end. Your car will unlock. Saves someone from having to drive your keys to you. Distance is no object. You could be hundreds of miles away, and if you can reach someone who has the other "remote" for your car, you can unlock the doors (or the trunk).

3. Hidden Battery power:

Imagine your cell battery is very low, you are expecting an important call and you don't have a charger. Nokia instrument comes with a reserve battery. To activate, press the keys *3370# Your cell will restart with this reserve and the instrument will show a 50% increase in battery. This reserve will get charged when you charge your cell next time.

4. To Disable a STOLEN Mobile Phone

To check your Mobile phone's serial number, key in the following digits on your phone * # 0 6 # You will see that a 15 digit code will appear on the screen. This number is unique to your handset. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe. When your phone gets stolen, you can phone your service provider and give them this code. They will then be able to block your handset so even if the thief changes the SIM card, your phone will be totally useless. You probably won't get your phone back, but at least you know that whoever stole it can't use/sell it either. If everybody does this, there would be no point in people stealing mobile phones.

@ Ishmael

Yes they have increased their salary, but it cannot be compared with what people in NNPC, DPR and other oil companies and even some bankers earn. I see their pay schedule every month. Even a 2 star general earns less than some fresh graduates in some oil companies.

WHITE LIE!!!!!!!!!!! Hope u are able to differentiate between a Lance Corporal, Major and Major General (2 Star General). Well i dont wish to say anyother thing further on the issue of take home figures. I feel we can say better things. After all everybody knows what he takes home monthly, and since what am paid does not affect your own salary or Nigerian economy, its not worth killing ourselves over it. If u are working and your pay is able to pay all your bills adequately, and even allows you to afford some 'unnecessary frivolities', i think the person is not doing badly. I rest my case.

I wonder why someone in the oil industry would be envying you because you are putting on military uniform?? It could be an irony.

Every proffession on earth has people who admire and envy those who are in there, and they could give an arm to belong therein. Envy does not necessarily have to come as a result of 'fat pay' but out of passion and love for that particular vocation, career or job. If you read in between the lines, you will understand that they do not envy me because am paid higher than them, NO WAY!!. Some people just love the military and military men out of reasons they cannot explain. Just the way some people love doctors, engineers, police and even Arsenal and Chelsea players they may not see with their eyes in their lifetime. Its not because they are paid millions of Pounds Sterling every Thursday and they want to earn such as well, but because of the passion and love for soccer or the Premiership. Some dream of no other profession other than Banking because they love their dressing style and corporate environment.

@ Chongaiman

Well done my brother!!! Are you a personnel? You passionately dealt with the questions asked by Eseaba, creamdream and YemiVictor beyond reasonable doubt. There couldnt have been a better response. I salute you.

Lastly, am sorry if i 'have run anybody down' or used any derogatory, foul and unfair language on anybody. Its not my style. Any inconvenience or bad feeling is highly regretted.

@ yemivictor

Secondly, you said somewhere in your previous post that you're now the envy of your contemporaries in the civil service (even those in the oil & gas sector) based on the new salary structure in the armed forces. Now, this got me curious as to your rank in the NN and commensurate salary! As your boasts in terms of remuneration in the NN and the armed forces in general runs contrary to what a close confidant tells me, whose dad happened to retire as a 2-star general in the NAF. Thank you!

Please, i dont fancy it when people quote me out of context. Take time and read my thread again and you will find where you have derailed and misunderstood me. Read and Read and read again, you might get my drift after that.

For the records, what i mean there is that i have a very good pay on ground and coupled with the importance and prestige people attach to the job, my contemporaries envy me. Mind you am a career regular combatant officer and am not here to compare pay packages of individual sectors. Come to think of it, do you think that it is every Tom, Dick and Harry that works in the Oil and Gas sector collects 'fat' pay just because the industry pays well? Wake up if you think so. Am presently working alongside them in the Niger Delta and i know better. Don't allow anybody to deceive you.

Lastly, you said a close confidant told you. Thank God you didnt say it is out of experience. When you are re-echoing what someone told you be careful, except you are the one directly involved, then you can speak with authority. Try and research well on issues before u type. Dont use hearsay to form an opinion, especially where learned and experienced people are within a whispering distance.

Thanks for listening!

ONE LOVE, though!

Hi,

This is a very interesting thread. I would greatly appreciate it if anyone, preferably, serving men or women, would provide answers to 2 questions:

1. How difficult can it get gaining admission to the NDA for the short service (6months) program?
2. What are the prospects of a medical doctor joining the armed forces? Post grad training, renumeration, etc

I'll be happy if anyone could send me detailed info via email: k_adeniran2001@yahoo.com

Regards,
fsb

fsb, i dont really know what you mean by difficult. However, that term is relative. In the Nigerian context where so many other things come into play when looking for a job, apart from being qualified for it, the term 'difficult' can mean so many things. i will only advise that you make sure that you are well qualified according to the published criteria, then leave the rest to God. Some might say godfathers or better still 'Long legs'. But frankly you dont need to have one before you could be considered. Just dont be discouraged by what you see or hear. Some of us wouldnt be there now if we had listened to pessimists and detractors. I wish you good luck.

Secondly, YES Medical Doctors have a bright prospect in the armed forces. Infact the Medical Corp or Branch in general. We have quite a number of erudite, well-respected and result-oriented medical experts in the military. They are quite happy and their remuneration is quite juicy. They are paid as professionals, not necessarily as soldiers. At least no medical officer earns the same salary as his/her mates of the same rank in other branches, quote me. If you are a surgeon or resident doctor (I dont know all there terminologies), your pay is the bomb! I think all of them are paid according to WHO standard or something like that. So you have a lot to gain!

Possibility of Post graduate training, Another YES!!!. I know 2 of my contemporaries who are presently undergoing their PG or residency at LUTH as i speak right now, all expenses paid by the military. What more can you ask for? Hope u have caught my drift.
One Love.

You can resign, but with conditions bordering on a particular number of years u must compulsorily serve. But why resign? when your lenght of stay is short, unless you put in for extension, which would of course be granted most of the time.

Career / Re: Salary In The Nigerian Army? by VAdmiral(m): 2:26am On Jan 12, 2008
AFTER READING THE RESPONSES OF SO MANY POSTERS ON THIS THREAD, I CANT HELP BEING FORCED TO REACT TO SO MANY HALF-TRUTHS AND MISINFORMATION PEOPLE WHO ARE IGNORANT ON ISSUES MAKE. IT WILL PAY EVERYBODY TO ALWAYS CONDUCT A LITTLE RESEARCH FROM PEOPLE THAT KNOW, OR BETTER STILL, THE PROFESSION INVOLVED, BEFORE MAKING WRONG AND IRRELEVANT COMMENTS. FOR THE PURPOSE OF CLARITY AND EDUCATION, I WOULD MAKE SOME POINTS CLEAR, WITHOUT ANY BIAS.

FIRST OF ALL, AS A REGULAR COMBATANT NAVAL OFFICER WHO PASSED THROUGH THE PRESTIGIOUS NDA, I KNOW THAT AM VERY COMFORTABLE WITH WHAT AM BEING PAID RIGHT NOW!!
. DO YOU GET EMPLOYED JUST TO GET RICH OR TO MAKE A GOOD, DECENT AND COMFORTABLE LIVING? WHATEVER YOUR ANSWER IS PUTS YOU IN THE REQUIRED CATEGORY. BUT I MUST TELL U THAT I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO MEASURE UP, AND EVEN BETTER, THAN SOME OF MY NUMEROUS CIVILIAN CONTEMPORARIES WORKING IN OTHER SECTORS OF THE ECONOMY, EVEN THE OIL AND GAS. ITS UP TO YOU TO MAKE YOUR DECISION ON THAT. OUR PAY HAS BEEN GREATLY CONSOLIDATED RECENTLY AND EVERYBODY IS HAPPY AND APPRECIATIVE. IT MAY INTEREST YOU TO FIND OUT AND FEEL THE PULSE OF A MILITARY FRIEND, IF YOU HAVE ONE.

SECONDLY, I MUST AGREE WITH YOU THAT FAMILY ISSUES IS REALLY A PROBLEM IN THE MILITARY, IN TERMS OF OUT-STATION POSTINGS. HOWEVER, I MUST SAY THAT SOME POSTERS HAVE OVER EXAGGERATED THIS FACT. THERE IS HARDLY NO PROFESSION IN THE WORLD THAT DOES NOT INVOLVE SOME OCCASSIONAL SEPARATION FROM FAMILIES. THIS COULD BE IN FORM OF COURSES, BUSINESS TRIPS, INTERVIEWS, PROMOTION-RELATED APPOINTMENTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES AMONGST OTHERS. IT IS NOT PECULIAR TO THE MILITARY ALONE. BUT THERE WOULD ALWAYS BE A WAY OUT, AT LEAST TO CURTAIL IT TO THE BAREST MINIMUM.

IN MY OWN CASE AS A NAVAL OFFICER, I STATIONED MY FAMILY IN LAGOS. THIS IS BECAUSE LAGOS HAS THE HIGHEST CONCENTRATION OF NAVAL ESTABLISHMENTS (ABOUT 90%). SO THERE IS ALWAYS A 90% CHANCE THAT ALL MY APPOINTMENTS WOULD BE IN LAGOS WHERE MY FAMILY IS LOCATED. IT IS NOT A RULE OF THE THUMB, BUT IT HAS WORKED FOR ME SO FAR. IT WOULD ALWAYS WORK IF YOU DO YOUR RESEARCH AND APPRECIATION WELL. HOWEVER, IF ONE IS APPOINTED OUTSIDE YOUR LOCATION, YOUR FAMILY DO NOT HAVE TO GO WITH U. YOU DONT HAVE TO DISRUPT YOUR CHILDREN'S EDUCATION OR YOUR SPOUSE'S EMPLOYMENT OR BUSINESS BY MOVING THEM WITH YOU. YOUR ABSENCE WOULDNT LAST FOREVER, AT MOST 24 MONTHS YOU SHOULD BE BACK. MOREOVER THERE ARE INTERMITTENT PERIODS OF ANNUAL AND COMPASSIONATE LEAVE AND PASSES TO CUSHION THE EFFECT, AND EVERYBODY IS HAPPY.

I WILL ALSO WANT TO REACT ON THE 'CONTROVERSIAL' AND THE MUCH TOUTED CAR 'GIFT' GIVEN TO MILITARY OFFICERS BY THE FORMER PRESIDENT. FOR AVOIDANCE OF DOUBT, IT IS NOT A GIFT, IT IS A LOAN AND WE ARE PAYING DEARLY FOR IT MONTHLY, FOR THE NEXT FIVE YEARS. YOU WOULDNT BELIEVE HOW MUCH I LOSE MONTHLY ON THE ACCOUNT OF THAT. HOWEVER AM NOT COMPLAINING BECAUSE IT WAS OPTIONAL FROM THE ONSET, IT WASNT COMPULSORY AND YOU HAD THE RIGHT TO REJECT IT. I KNOW SOME PEOPLE WHO DID NOT COLLECT. SOME WHO WERE ENTITLED TO A HIGHER BRAND OF CAR OPTED FOR A LOWER CATEGORY DUE TO REPAYMENT BURDEN. SO NAIRALANDERS, BE BETTER INFORMED.

FURTHERMORE, TALKING ABOUT DEATH AND DYING, I DONT THINK THERE IS A PROFESSION THAT DOES NOT HAVE A MEASURE OF RISK THAT IS GRAVE ENOUGH TO CAUSE DEATH. EVEN SLEEPING IS RISKY BECAUSE ONE CAN DIE OF IDLENESS AND INACTIVITY. PLEASE BE MORE POSITIVE TO LIFE. IF ITS NOT YOUR TIME, EVEN IF A BULLET SPILLS OUT YOUR BRAINS, GOD CAN WORK A MIRACLE THROUGH A ROADSIDE CHEMIST (DRUG SELLER) AND YOU WOULD BE BACK ON YOUR FEET AGAIN. YOU DONT EVEN HAVE TO BE RUSHED TO ST NICHOLAS, HAVANA OR EKO HOSPITALS. IF YOU ARE A BANKER, HAVE YOU THOUGHT OF WHAT COULD HAPPEN IF AN ARMED ROBBER BREAKS IN, OR EVEN ON YOUR WAY HOME IN TRAFFIC WHEN YOU CLOSE LATE? IF U ARE IN THE OIL AND GAS SECTOR AND WORKING IN THE NIGER DELTA, DO U KNOW WHAT COULD HAPPEN IF THERE WAS AN EXPLOSION OFFSHORE ON THE RIG OR IF THE MILITANTS DECIDES TO PAY A VISIT TO YOUR FLOW STATION? AFTERALL SOME OF THE PEOPLE WHO DIED DURING 9/11 AT THE WORLD TRADE CENTRE WERE IN THEIR OFFICES. TO EVERY PROFESSION OR JOB, THERE IS AN OCCUPATIONAL HAZARD CAPABLE OF KILLING SOMEONE UNEXPECTEDLY, NO ONE IS SAFER. I SERVED IN ECOMOG FOR ALMOST A YEAR AND CAME BACK SAFELY. I HAVE BEEN SERVING IN THE NIGER DELTA FOR THE PAST 18 MONTHS, YET SOME PEOPLE CAME AND DIED WITHIN 3 WEEKS. I AM NOT BETTER, WISER OR STRONGER THAN THEM IN ANY WAY BUT AM ALIVE TODAY BY THE GRACE OF GOD. SO POSSIBILITY OF DEATH IS A FLIMSY EXCUSE TO RUN AWAY FROM THE MILITARY. LETS HAVE A MUCH POSITIVE OUTLOOK TO LIFE AND KNOW THAT WHEREVER WE ARE, ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN.

ON A FINAL NOTE, I MUST TRUTHFULLY ASSERT THAT THE MILITARY IS A NOBLE PROFESSION AND GONE ARE THOSE DAYS WHEN ONLY DROP OUTS, MEDIOCRES AND USELESS PEOPLE ARE FOUND THEREIN. INFACT NOWADAYS YOU CANT EVEN SURVIVE THE WIND OF CHANGE IF YOU ARE ONE. IN THE NIGERIAN ARMED FORCES, WE HAVE FIRST CLASS BRAINS, SKILLFULL ENGINEERS, BRILLANT DOCTORS, ERUDITE TACTICIANS, DAZZLING ACADEMICIANS, TALENTED NAVIGATORS, TESTED PILOTS, MAGNIFICIENT MARKSMEN, SUPERP MEN AND WOMEN OF NOBLE CHARACTER AND DISPOSITION. I CAN GO ON AND ON AND ON. IN ANOTHER VEIN, BEING A THIRD WORLD COUNTRY DOES NOT AUTOMATICALLY MEAN THAT WE ARE FAILURES WHERE EVEN THE MOST ADVANCED MILITARIES ARE LACKING. AS AN INSIDER, IT WOULD BE THE MOST UNFAIR COMPARISON TO MAKE. WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE INTIMIDATING BIOGRAPHIES AND FEATS OF THE GENERALS AGWAI, KHOBE AND ADMIRALS OMBU, BOB-MANUEL, ISAH, AMAUCHE OF THIS WORLD, U WILL UNDERSTAND THAT THIS IS A PLACE WHERE NOBLE MEN TREAD. WELL, EXCUSES TO ALMIGHTY QUOTA SYSTEM AND GEOPOLITICS OF THE NIGERIAN NATION WHICH HAVE REALLY DEVASTATED THE STRUCTURES OF OUR NATION AND RELEGATED HARDWORK AND MERIT TO THE BACKGROUND. WHATEVER THE CASE, THERE IS ALWAYS ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT. I BELIEVE THAT WE CAN ALL TAKE OUR DESTINIES INTO OUR HAND AND UNLEARN ALL THE NEGATIVE ATTRIBUTES WE HAVE INCULCATED OVER TIME FOR THE PURPOSE OF A BETTER FUTURE. WITH THIS IN LINE, EVERY ASPECT OF OUR NATIONAL LIFE, INCLUDING THE ARMED FORCES, WOULD BE BETTER FOR IT.

I HOPE SOMEBODY IS EDUCATED AND BETTER INFORMED BY MY INPUT.

@POSTER
PLS GO AHEAD, JOIN US AND SERVE YOUR FATHERLAND. YOU ARE ON A RIGHT COURSE AND YOU WONT REGRET IT. YOU COULD GET RICH IN THE PROCESS BECAUSE MANY OFFICERS AND MEN ARE INDEED RICH, IF THAT IS WHAT U DESIRE IN A PROFESSION BUT DONT BE OVERAMBITIOUS. YOU COULD GET HURT AND BURN YOUR FINGERS BIG TIME!!!!
YOU ARE MOST WELCOME ON BOARD A NOBLE PROFESSION MY BROTHER!!

I don't expect u to be asking this kind of question. Do u know what u would have done?
If he told u this in his office u would have taken a plain sheet of paper right from his table, asked him him to excuse u his pen, leaned forward on his table and written two words - I RESIGN - and handed it back to him right there.

What kind of a slave driver do u have for a boss. Don't mind him jare my sister, go ahead with your life. A better job would definitely be in one of the packages God would deliver to u as a weeding gift on that day.

Trust is the foundation for any good relationship. You'll always attract what you are. If you are trust worthy you'll attract trustworthy friends. There can be the odd person here and there but the de facto is always true. It up to you to choose your friends wisely and not commit to a relationship until trust has been established
