It was a gory sight yesterday as
workers and patients of
government hospitals in Imo State
were locked out by officials of Imo
Security Network, ISN, following
the order of the state governor,
Rochas Okorocha .
The general hospitals involved
were among 305 health
institutions in the state which the
state governor concession early
last month.
Since then, government and
labour union had been at logger
ahead as the union complained of
insensitivity of the government to
the plight of its members who are
owed over eight months salary
arrears.
When National Mirror visited some
of the general hospital at Mberie,
Mbaitoli Local Government Area,
Umuguma in Owerri West LGA,
Ngor Okpala LGA, and General
Hospital Okigwe, workers and
patients were seen discussing the
matter.
The officials, who arrived the
hospital premises at about 12
midnight on Sunday, ordered all
the staff and patients admitted in
the wards out of the hospital
before locking the gates.
At Mberie General Hospital over
20 member of the security
network, that were deployed to
the hospital chased the workers
and patients out of the hospital
while those on duty were locked
out from entering into the
hospital.
A pregnant woman, Mrs. Ijiribako
Chigozie, who claimed she came to
the hospital for delivery, told our
correspondent that she registered
at the hospital.
“I was given a date today
(yesterday) because I am about to
deliver, I am feeling somehow,”
she said. Some doctors described
the pregnant woman’s condition
as having “Pedaroedema”(swollen
legs) as a result of long time
standing, adding that she was
being exposed to serious danger.”
Also, the state chairman, Hospital
Workers Welfare Association, Imo
State, Mgbemere Friday,
expressed fear that the situation
may worsen today (Tuesday)
“because that is the day HIV
patients come to take their routine
treatment and many may die if
they did to take their drugs as
prescribed by their doctors.
Speaking also, the doctor in
charge of Mberie General Hospital,
Dr. Christian Ojima, said that over
20 armed men arrived the hospital
at about 12 midnight and ordered
nurses and security guards on
duty including in-patients out of
the hospital that hour.
Reacting, Chief Press Secretary to
Governor Okorocha, Sam
Onwuemeodo, said that he has
not gotten the details, but insisted
that the hospitals are owed by the
state government.
