Romance / How To Talk To Your Son About Sex by ValourDigest(m): 6:16pm On Aug 09, 2023
When my son was only four he asked me, “Where do babies come from?” I told him that they come from their mommy’s tummy. Hoping that answer would satisfy, I tried to change the subject. Then came this, “How do babies get in their mom’s tummy?”

Fortunately, my wife and I were just talking about a brilliant analogy made in a book she was reading called The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom. Sometimes, my son helps me bring in the groceries after a trip to the market. So I asked him if it would be good for me to give him a bag that was too heavy to carry and he said, “No.” I explained to him that when he grew up and got older, he would be able to carry the heavier bags.

In other words, I told him, the answer to his question was too much weight for his young age. But I would give him the answer when he was older and could handle it.

Is your son old enough to carry the weight? Like me, you may have been putting it off for as long as you could. The last thing you want is for your son’s first discussions about sex to come from anyone else. You probably know that it’s time to talk about it, but it’s tough to know what to say. Here’s how to talk to your son about sex.

Business / The Value Of Networking In Today's Marketplace by ValourDigest(m): 2:07pm On Aug 07, 2023
Building your profile and staying relevant in your business or workplace is no longer just about what you know; it’s also about who you know. Gone are the days when just hard work or the quality of your products and services is enough to earn you the favour of your employers or customers.

Would you like to get promoted?

Do you want to earn more money?

Would you like to get offered a new job?

Do you work for yourself as a freelancer or consultant?

Are you a part of an organisation that wants to succeed?

Have you aspirations of working for yourself in the future?

If you’ve answered ‘yes’ to any of these questions, you’d better get networking.

But what is networking exactly?
Dr Rob Yeung describes networking as “a technique for presenting yourself effectively when you meet people so that they will want to meet and deal with you again.” ‘People’ could be a new contact you are meeting for the first time or colleagues and acquaintances whom you have known for some time.

Examine the definition again. What’s the first thing you see?

Networking is a Technique.

Health / Healthy Ways To Boost Your Immune System by ValourDigest(m): 10:03am On Aug 07, 2023
As a person who has been on the internet for as long as you have, you must have heard people telling you about the need to boost your immune system. Even if you didn’t come across it, you must’ve seen something along the lines of that during the coronavirus pandemic.

To jog your memory, many medical practitioners emphasized the fact that the coronavirus is somewhat easier to shake off if you have a strong immune system. That alone must be enough motivation to boost your immune system.

But, you really don’t need to wait for another global pandemic or until you get the virus before you decide to boost your immune system and take care of yourself. You can start now by doing the following.

1. Stop smoking

Career / How To Make Yourself An Asset In Any Setup by ValourDigest(m): 2:59pm On Aug 03, 2023
In any setup, be it an organisation, church, marriage, ministry, your street or wherever you find yourself, there are certain things you can do to make yourself an asset. An asset is something or someone that adds significant value and is highly prized or considered indispensable. When organisations are downsizing and they have to lay off people, they usually audit all the individuals on their payroll to see the ones they can do away with. While it is generally believed that nobody is indispensable, the truth is that in any setup, there are usually one, two or a few people whose absence will be felt greatly if they leave the setup.

So when organisations are going to lay off, the first people to go are usually those who add little or no value to the overall setup. These people are called liability. They can go and the setup won’t feel the impact of their leaving. This shouldn’t be you. You ought to position yourself as an asset anywhere you are. In the course of my meditation, I have been able to identify 12 ways to make yourself a prized person or a valuable member of any team you find yourself.

1. You must be a solution provider, not a creator of problems

Health / 5 Foods That Protect Your Heart by ValourDigest(m): 10:57pm On Jul 28, 2023
Heart disease kills more than 325,000 men a year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In fact, more men die from heart disease alone than all cancers combined, making it the #1 Killer Of Men.

But you can lower your risk—and eating a heart-healthy diet is a good place to start.

Blueberries
Inflammation in your artery walls can increase the risk of a heart attack, says cardiologist Adam Skolnick, M.D., of NYU Langone Medical Center. “You can counter that process by eating at least a cup of blueberries a day,” he says.

Their inflammation-battling antioxidants are the heroes here. If you can’t find fresh ones, frozen berries work. Deploy them in your breakfast cereal or yogurt.

Romance / 8 Things To Know About Someone Before You Date Them by ValourDigest(m): 11:10pm On Jul 27, 2023
Getting back into the dating game can be tough, especially if you just got out of an LTR. From the very beginning, you’re stuck wondering if you should try to become one of the many online dating success stories, or meet someone “organically” like your parents and grandparents probably did. When you finally do land the all-important first date, you’ll probably spend a lot of time wondering if you’re saying the “right” stuff or if the other person thinks you’re as awkward as you feel. Quite frankly, it’s a miracle that many of us actually end up in serious relationships with all the hassle it takes to get there. But what should you know before you date someone?

Whether you’re gearing up for your first date with someone or preparing to take things to the next level with a person you’ve been seeing for a while, it’s always good to ask yourself what you really want out of this. Maybe you’re looking for your soul mate, or maybe you’re just hoping for a quality fling, but either way, you should always look for someone who is, at the very least, a decent person with whom you’re reasonably compatible. And to do that, you might need to ask them a few questions… or at least do some thorough Facebook stalking.

It’s obviously not necessary to approach your current flame as though they were a job interview candidate, but by the time you’ve hung out a few times, there are some basic things you should know about them before deciding if you want to make things a bit more serious. Since a study by Breakthrough for a Broken Heart author Paul Davis says that it only takes an average of six to eight dates for couples to become “exclusive,” you might want to cover all your bases pretty early on, too. It’s completely up to you to decide what you can tolerate and what constitutes a deal breaker, but no matter what, you should be armed with the information you need to make an informed decision about your love life.

Health / How To Overcome Laziness In Six Practical Steps by ValourDigest(m): 10:40pm On Jul 24, 2023
Sometimes, a lazy day is just what you need. Especially when you’ve spent the entire week working yourself to the bone, you need to relax a little bit. But, what happens when that lazy day becomes a lazy week? Or a lazy month? Or a lazy year? Yeah, we don’t think it’s pleasant either. That’s why you need to learn how to overcome laziness.

If you don’t overcome laziness in its early stages, you might end up remaining that way forever, never really being able to do or achieve much. So, how do you overcome laziness? Let’s find out, folks!

1. Use your strengths to make up for your weaknesses

Sometimes, the only reason you’re reluctant to do something is that you feel like you don’t have the capacity to do it. For example, a student who is bad at mathematics will avoid reading the subjects at all costs. If you’re that type of person, you can use the strengths you have to make up for your weak points. For example, you can use your strength in other subjects or courses to boost your overall grades.

2. Reward yourself when you do things well

However, maintaining healthy hair while obtaining your ideal style demands perseverance and careful maintenance. In this post, we will look at practical suggestions for growing your hair in style as a man and maintaining it in health.

Romance / How To Handle Difficult Situations by ValourDigest(m): 4:00pm On Jul 18, 2023
As children, we learnt to deal with situations rather interestingly. But as adults we practically forgot how we dealt with the issues as children because our consciousness has changed. I watched Saridat, my cousin’s daughter who was a toddler in 2011 while I was writing my final year project, learn to walk. As she was doing this sometimes with frustration I discovered that the excuses which we as adults would have given didn’t deter her from moving on. I noticed she didn’t have the following usual excuses as she learnt to stand up and walk:

1. I don’t want to look bad

2. I don’t want to fall down

3. I don’t want anyone to watch me fall

4. I don’t want any pain

For Saridat, these reservations would appear absurd. If any of these applied, she might still have been a toddler today. As adults, we resort to these excuses all the time. We cannot deny that there are negative situations, but our reactions to them are what ultimately matter.

Let us examine these reservations and see how they apply to our daily lives.

I don’t want to look bad

Romance / 6 Secrets To Win Your Wife’s Respect by ValourDigest(m): 9:28pm On Jul 17, 2023
In this post, Masculine Nuggets writer runs you through key points that will help you earn your wife’s respect.

In every marriage (or relationship leading to marriage) the woman needs to have her man function in his role. For the woman to feel the warmth of a relationship, the man must be more than just a guy who occupies the position of a man in her life. While most men want to be the kind of man that is highly desired by every woman, only a few smart men play within the confines of certain rules which see their wives respecting them and submitting to their leadership. I strongly believe that in as much as it is the duty of the wife to submit, it is the place of the husband to love his wife.

Nowadays, most adult females believe that they are independent and as such, they don’t need a man in their lives. The reality is, some women in their careers today are faring better than most men in the same calling. They have gone up the corporate ladder and are seeking positions in public office. Many women that have risen to such positions are faced with the challenge of relating properly with the man in their lives because they sometimes want to call the shots and be in control.

This article intends to show you how to make your wife submit to your leadership regardless of the position she occupies in her career or other platforms outside the home front. The message is addressed not only to married men but also to men that are looking to get married.

1. Function in your role

Career / How To Use Criticism To Your Advantage by ValourDigest(m): 11:05pm On Jul 12, 2023
Never attack the person. Criticize the action.
Mel Robbins
Let me guess: Hearing the words, “We need to talk” from a boss, partner or friend sends you into panic mode. If you hate hearing about the things you’ve done wrong and the mistakes you’ve made, you’re not alone. But it’s a catch-22. We don’t like being criticized, but honest feedback is one of the most valuable tools we have for self-improvement.
Criticism hurts for a reason, and the explanation lies in neuroscience. In order to keep us alive, our brains have evolved to react much more strongly to negative things. The brain has evolved this way for a good reason: to keep us safe. Just as 20,000 years ago, the brain was trying to keep hunter-gatherers safe from warring tribes, your brain reacts the same way to a critical comment from your spouse or boss.

But just because that negative feedback hurts, should your partner have avoided giving it? And should you avoid doing the same?

No way—as long as you put a little bit of thought into it.

Research from the University of Michigan shows that the right dose of constructive criticism is actually one of the biggest factors in predicting a high-performing team. And research by John Gottman, Ph.D., a top relationship researcher, also found there’s a sweet spot for how much criticism helps keep relationships alive.

Both teams of researchers arrived at a similar conclusion: In order to keep a relationship or work team performing well, five or six positive interactions were needed for every one criticism or negative interaction.
Criticism, when delivered thoughtfully, (read more)

Career / 6 Practices To Improve Your Leadership Creativity by ValourDigest(m): 5:08pm On Jul 08, 2023
What pops into your mind when you hear the words, “the world’s most creative artists and their work?”

Michelangelo’s David?

Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony #9?

Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa?

The Beatles White Album? (I couldn’t resist.)

Creativity is not limited to those who are artists.

Great leaders are creative, and creativity is not a gift reserved for a few genius types, it can be practised and developed by anyone.
Leaders tap into creativity every day to solve problems, think in new ways, develop people and innovate toward a better future.
Creativity isn’t so much about being clever. It might be that clever is part of the picture, but clarity is the leading edge of creativity that changes your current reality.
Clarity is important because if people don’t understand something, they don’t support it. And if they don’t understand you, they don’t follow you
Let me offer some caution about making a direct connection between being creative and being a maverick, bucking the system and breaking the rules. Sometimes a creative leader does those things, but candidly, not as often as we’d like to romanticize.

If you want to grow an organization, (your church,) you have to embrace systems, teamwork, and collaboration. And that requires tremendous creativity to make it all work together.
“Cowboy” leadership grants you massive freedom, and that feels great, but eventually, you’ll hit a lid.

If you want to continue reaching more people and seeing more lives changed, (who of us doesn’t, right?) that requires the persistent discipline of execution.
And consistent execution involves strategic routine, systems etc..

It may seem counterintuitive, but creative leaders embrace productive routines.
There’s a big difference between a routine and a rut. A good exercise routine, for example, helps you stay strong and fit. A good study routine enables you to learn new things. A rut is different. When you are in a rut, things seem to be stuck, including your leadership.
Think of it this way; a good routine helps you make progress. Being in a rut is like having your back tires stuck in the mud, spinning but going nowhere.

The following is a list of routines or practices that will help you become a more creative leader.

6 practices to increase your leadership creativity:

1) Cultivate your curiosity.
If you are naturally curious, you have an advantage. The desire to learn and grow increases the potential for creative leadership.
Some leaders like things the way they are. Comfortable is a natural human desire. However, if that is you, that doesn’t mean you’re not creative, in fact, it often indicates that you’re under pressure and have no margin to be curious. Fight for some margin.

Asking questions is a great way to elevate your curiosity. Push yourself to ask new and different questions with a goal of seeing something in a new and different way.

2) Meet new and different people.

Romance / 8 Reasons People Marry The Wrong Person by ValourDigest(m): 11:14pm On Jul 07, 2023
Many married people are daily regretting their marriages.
On the other end of the spectrum, many single people are afraid they’ll marry the wrong person.

Here are some reasons why people marry the wrong persons and end their marriages in bitter separations or live to endure it:

1. You focus more on chemistry than on character
Never marry someone because you’re in love. Falling in love is a state of temporary psychosis. It is the “delusion of fusion.” Identify the specific character traits you want in your spouse and know clearly how to assess them for each one.
Background checks are essential. Be especially careful to check out the family.
People from warm and loving homes will most likely be emotionally healthy people.

Chemistry means there is physical and sexual attraction.
Compatibility: Looking for sameness – same backgrounds, culture, language, interests, politics etc. Temperament types are important to know too.

2. You expect him or her to change after you’re married

Career / 20 Life Lessons I Wish I Knew 10 Years Ago by ValourDigest(m): 12:58pm On Jul 05, 2023
Ten years ago, I’d just finished school, I was training almost every single day to become a professional rugby player, and I was just about to begin my first year of study at university. Since then, so much has changed in almost every aspect of my life.

Just recently, I looked back at some of those major changes and on some of the life lessons that have helped me along the way—things I wish I’d been able to tell my 10-years-younger self. Many of these lessons were learned the hard way, by my own mistakes. Some of them I was lucky to have a friend or mentor to show me the way.

But all of them were important in some way because they helped shape who I am now.

1. Learn something new every day.
I try to learn and apply something new every day that can bring me closer to at least one of my goals. I figure if you can learn one small thing each day, and then take one action to apply what you’ve learned, then over the course of a year, you will be 365 small steps closer to your vision. Learning never stops. You should be prepared to add and apply new knowledge every single day

Career / 3 Brilliant Ways To Add Value To Your Team by ValourDigest(m): 11:15am On Jul 04, 2023
What’s most important to your leadership: adding value to yourself or adding value to others?

Leadership is fuelled by personal values and the ability to create values in others. The important thing about leadership is your character and the principles that guide your life. Unfortunately, the corporate culture is hardwired to serve self first and subordinates eventually.

Many leaders have been made to confuse leadership with the craving for success. And they’ve swallowed several misguided philosophies about leadership. They believe leadership means:

To be in charge.
To make the organization run smoothly.
To make money for shareholders.
To build a great company.
To make us better than the competition, and win.

Adding value is a value in leadership. The responsibility of a leader, therefore, is not only to identify his personal values but also to add value to others. Here are three brilliant ways to bring worth into your team.

Computers / How To Be Productive In An Age Of Digital Distractions by ValourDigest(m): 10:00am On Jul 03, 2023
Digital distractions didn’t always pose a huge problem to productivity. In the past, our parents could go several days and nights without their phones. They merely did whatever they wanted to do and excelled at it, depending on how much effort they put into it, among other things.

However, today, the story is very different. From social media to internet blogs to video-sharing platforms, there are so many things to be seen. It’s even worse now because there is on-demand entertainment everywhere from Netflix to HBO and everything else in between.

So, how do you stay productive despite these digital distractions?

Investment / How To Begin Investing For Retirement: The 30yo's Guide by ValourDigest(m): 8:56am On Mar 31, 2021
Today, we’ll be talking about the 30-yo’s guide to investing for retirement. The reason behind this is that ordinarily, investing is something that should be done with brains and caution. You can’t just rush into it with guns blazing, expecting things not to backfire. They probably will if you go in with the wrong attitude. However, as complicated as normal investing is, investing for retirement is a bit more tasking.

You need to be extra careful to protect your money so that you don’t lose your retirement and end up frustrated after work. So, how do you go about investing for retirement? Let’s see.

Understand why you’re investing

The chances are that you know what you want already. But, just to be on the safe side, you need to know why you’re making investments in the first place. Are you trying to spend your retirement travelling the world? Do you want to launch a business? Or do you just want to complement your pension? Your money requirement based on this answer will determine how much you need to invest.

Nairaland / General / How To Become More Mindful In Your Daily Life by ValourDigest(m): 10:12am On Mar 30, 2021
The chances are that you’ve probably not heard of being mindful, much less why you need to become more mindful. To break things down a little, being mindful essentially involves allowing yourself to experience your own life or the world around you better. It leads to a calmer, more relaxed and put together mind.

Becoming more mindful can happen in any number of ways, including meditation. However, not everyone is skilled at this, and it can be a bit tiring if you’re not used to it. That’s why we’ll be sharing alternative means to become more mindful as you go about your daily activities:

Take a walk

Walking, in itself, is a great form of therapy. Apart from exercising your body, it frees you up from all the limitations of the four walls you live or work in. So, if you're looking to become more mindful in your daily life, it might be a great idea to take a walk, regardless of the distance.

Live in the moment

You won’t realize how much you’ve been missing out on until you do this. But, try it for a few minutes at a time. Don’t think about the past. Don’t think about anything you want to do in the future. That includes even the meal you’ll be eating in the next two hours. Just live within the moment you’re in and allow yourself to exist peacefully without worries or regrets.

Career / Five Tips For Resolving Conflicts At Work by ValourDigest(m): 1:09pm On Mar 29, 2021
Depending on how you choose to see it, you could say that a place of business is a place that is utterly void of emotions. As such, there shouldn’t be any need for resolving conflict at work. However, this isn’t entirely true.

While the office is largely a place for business, emotions can get involved too. When that happens, conflict can arise, and if you have conflict, you’ll have to learn the process of resolving conflict at work.

Not to worry, though. You really don’t have to look too far. We’ll be showing you the steps required in resolving conflict at work.

Embrace conflict

Where two or more people are present, it is inevitable. Don’t live your life or go about your day thinking that things will always be rosy because they wouldn’t. So, while you’re at work, expect conflict to happen. Don’t go around looking for it. But, when it happens, don’t get too flustered about the other person taking offence or offending you because it’s perfectly normal. The only thing to do at this point is to calmly evaluate ways that you can resolve it when it comes up.

Romance / Five Indicators That You May Need To Take A Break From The Relationship by ValourDigest(m): 10:02am On Mar 28, 2021
The decision to take a break in a relationship isn’t always the easiest to make. It usually comes after a series of negative events have occurred, and you now doubt the importance of your relationship as well as its sustainability.

Nevertheless, if your relationship has been a cause for worry for a while, then you might need to take a break. You just need to remember that you shouldn’t take a break at the slightest opportunity you get, as that can ruin the relationship. Instead, try to look out for the following signs. When you notice them, you definitely need to get a breather.

You’re moving too fast

When you’ve only just met the lady a month ago, and now she’s talking about moving in with you just because you both shared a nice kiss once, it’s definitely a sign that you both need to chill out.

Nairaland / General / Bad Social Habits You Must Always Avoid by ValourDigest(m): 9:40am On Mar 28, 2021
Bad social habits are those things we do that can be particularly annoying to those around us. They demonstrate a lack of etiquette and show that we’re not quite as cultured as we should be. Needless to say, they affect how we’re perceived by everyone around us and can affect our ability to make new friends and whatnot. As such, it is important for us to avoid certain bad social habits.

Having said that, it’s really not quite possible to avoid something you don’t know. That’s like swinging an ax at a tree in the dark. So, we’ve taken out time to get together the bad social habits you shouldn’t be found with. They are:

Sending unsolicited lewd pictures to female friends

Compared to everything else on the list, this is perhaps the worst thing you can do. Not only is it considered an extremely bad habit, but it's also considered sexual harassment, and it can get you in a lot of trouble if you get caught. That is beside the amount of discomfort it can cause the recipient. No matter how close you think you are, never send these types of pictures to your female friends, especially without consent.

If you have a flair for excellent images that are as captivating as they’re narrative, you can take a step into the world of pictures. If your passion once drove you to buy a professional camera, that’s great because it’ll help you take excellent pictures. But, if you do not quite have the financial buoyance to handle a professional camera right now, that’s fine too. After all, there’s an entire segment of photography dedicated to taking pictures with mobile phones alone. You can explore that area.

Admittedly, taking pictures indoors might be a tad difficult, considering that you don’t have so much of the sun’s natural light. But who says you can’t step outside your room into your compound to take these pictures? Who says you can’t even get a few photography lights and turn one of your rooms into a studio?

Then, teach yourself to edit them and make them look uncommon and extraordinary. Afterwards, you can choose to share with the real world.
