So because of corruption and connected families to the ruling party, who happens to be the favourites to the distribution of this food parcels, the government decided to give away vouchers to purchase food instead food parcels or cash to poor families. 2 Likes |

It will be funded in part by international finance institutions and by redirecting funds already allocated in the current budget. The main interventions announced on Tuesday are: R20 billion directly for fighting the pandemic. This includes spending on protective equipment for healthcare workers, additional ventilators, staffing, medicine, field hospitals and community screening. R20 billion for municipalities for the provision of emergency water supplies, sanitising public transport facilities as well as feeding and housing the homeless. R50 billion towards new grants, grant top-ups and other measures to relieve social distress. R100 billion for the protection of jobs and job creation. R40 billion for income support payments for workers whose employers cannot pay wages. R2 billion to assist spaza shop owners and small businesses. A R200 billion loan guarantee scheme from the banks, National Treasury and SA Reserve Bank. R70 billion in tax relief schemes for distressed businesses. In addition, taxpayers who donate to the Solidarity Fund will be able to claim 10% as a percentage of their taxable income. 'Devastating' impact on economy Ramaphosa said the government's "urgent and dramatic steps" taken to stop Covid-19 have saved tens of thousands of lives, and were "absolutely necessary". But, he added, this was having a devastating effect on the economy. There are fears this will be enough to tip economically vulnerable households below the poverty line. Some estimates have put the total damage to the economy as a result of the Covid-19 lockdown at a downturn of between 6 to 8%, with a million job losses. READ | Unemployed will get R2 100 each in Covid-19 payouts over 6 months, children R2 800 extra A 2018 study found only a quarter of South Africans can be considered middle class or of the elite class, while the rest either live in poverty or close to it. The same study found three out of four children under the age of 15 live in poverty. Protests over food shortages have already been seen across the country, and the SA Social Security Agency is currently overwhelmed with applications for food parcels, receiving 9 000 calls an hour. Grants and relief for impoverished Civil society has been vocal in its call for greater relief, especially for the unemployed and informally employed. So perhaps the most significant measure introduced by Ramaphosa was the use of the existing social security infrastructure to distribute millions of rand to the poorest in society via grants. A number of institutions, academics, activists and economists had called for some form of a grant, either in the form of a new grant, a top-up of the child support grant or all grants, or the distribution of cash to the poorest in society. Ramaphosa appears to have adopted all of these suggestions which include: A six-month temporary coronavirus grant. An increase of the child support grant of R300 in May and R500 from June to October. An extra R250 for other grant beneficiaries for the next six months. A Covid-19 social relief of distress grant of R350 per month for six months for unemployed people who do not receive any other grant or Unemployment Insurance Fund payment. The roll-out of vouchers and cash transfers to those in need for food assistance. The distribution of 250 000 food parcels in the next two weeks (a partnership between the Solidarity Fund, NGOs, community-based organisations and the Department of Social Development). Funding The R500 billion plan will be financed by R130 billion that will be reprioritised from the current budget. 1 Like |

geloorrrrdd:what black South Africans achieved after 1994, statistics says it all...21 ways life in South Africa has improved since 1994 Staff Writer 3 years ago The Institute of Race Relations has released a report detailing the many areas in South Africa where life has improved since the dawn of democracy. The report – titled Life in South Africa: Reasons for Hope – was published at a time of economic uncertainty and political instability. However, it is for this reason that the report is necessary, the IRR said – to show the socio-economic success the country has achieved, and the many ways in which life has become better. “The context is one in which the economy is not performing strongly. Too many people are unemployed. There is a great deal of corruption. Violent protests are commonplace. Questions are being asked about the future of South Africa’s democracy,” the IRR said. “But amidst the turmoil, IRR analysts see the story of a young democracy that has made a vast amount of progress in fields ranging from the economy and employment to living standards, poverty, education, healthcare and crime. “This is not captured by screaming newspaper headlines but by the substantive progress we have made as a country since the end of apartheid. It is a story of hope amid change.” These are the x ways in which life in South Africa has improved greatly, according to the IRR Economy The economy has grown by 85% in real terms since 1994, from R1.65 trillion to R3.06 trillion in 2015. Real GDP per capita is 33% higher, from R42,386 per person, to R56,343 in 2015 Disposable income has increased by 42%, from R23,686 to R33,660 in 2015. Inflation has dropped from 9% in 1994 to 4.6% in 2015. The budget deficit has decreased from 7.1% of GDP to 2.9% of GDP in 2015. Despite high unemployment, more people are taking part in the economy, with 58.1% market participation in 2015, up from only 47.7% in 1994. More than double the amount of black Africans are employed in 2015 than in 1994. Living conditions There are fewer informal homes in 2015 than in 1994, with a 131.3% increase in formal homes. People with access to electricity has increased for cooking (228%), lighting (192%) and heating (58%) – while access to water has more than doubled (110%) and access to toilets has also increased significantly (151%). The number of low income households (LSM 1-3) has decreased significantly – showing a move to higher income homes (LSM 4-7 and LSM 8-10). The middle class has increased significantly – almost doubling since 1994. Households living in extreme poverty has been been reduced from 525 of the black African population in 2002, to 20% in 2015. Education A higher proportion of black South African students is passing than ever before – 67.4% in 2015, versus 49% in 1994. More students are attending university than ever before – with 807,000 students enrolled in 2015, versus 385,200 in 1994. Black South African students now make up the majority of students (70.1%) compared to only 20% in the late 1980s, and over 45% in the mid 90s. There are more students studying towards a science, engineering or technology degree now than ever before (55,574 students in 2015, versus only 20,610 in 1994). Health The rate of new HIV infections since the turn of the millennium has effectively halved, with 321,500 new infections in 2015, compared to 646,800 in 1999. The rate of still births has declined by 22% since 2001. There are more professional nurses – and those enrolled to be nurses – than ever before. Growth of 50% and 115% respectively between 1998 and 2015. There are 80% more GPs and 29% more specialists practicing in the public sector since 2000. Crime and security South Africa’s murder rate has halved since 1994/95 – from a rate of 68 murders per 100,000 population, to 34 per 100,000 population in 2015. “The list of socio-economic successes set out in this report is far from exhaustive. Rather, it lists examples of just some of the things that have gone right since 1994,” the IRR said. “This makes the point that as we face the future, we must not lose sight of the fact that life in South Africa today is better than it was twenty years ago.” Read: How much the average South African household takes home each month Headline Your email address 1 Like 1 Share |

geloorrrrdd:Eskom expresses pride on improved access to electricity SOUTH AFRICA / 28 SEPTEMBER 2018, 4:44PM / ANA REPORTER Eskom powerlines. Picture:Bhekikhaya Mabaso/African News Agency/ANA. CAPE TOWN - South Africa’s power utility Eskom on Friday said electricity access had improved from 36% in 1994 to 90% to date. Eskom said in 1994, at the “the dawn of democracy”, only 36% of the country had access to electricity, with 12% being rural electrification. To date, the programme is left with less than 300,000 un-electrified houses in its area of supply, and this figure excludes growth and informal settlements. Ninety percent of South Africans have access to electricity, and 80% in rural areas have been electrified through the integrated national electrification programme(INEP). The statement said, the majority of the electrification programme was being implemented in more remote and deep rural areas, where the construction of the network infrastructure was challenging, on difficult terrain and therefore expensive. To date, Eskom has electrified in excess of five million households, with plans to electrify 180,000 households per year for the next three years. “Eskom is as much part of South Africa’s heritage as our power lines and power stations are part of the South African landscape. But it goes beyond that, our systems, processes, skills and expertise needed to run the grid are also part of a shared heritage,” said Eskom group chief executive Phakamani Hadebe. “This year’s heritage day is special because this is the year of Nelson Mandela’s centenary, a man that taught all of us the importance of our rich and varied cultural heritage that can help build our nation,” he said. Hadebe added that “as an organisation that has been the cornerstone of South Africa’s economy, we continue to pride ourselves on our heritage of powering the nation. We are forever mindful that electricity is a key enabler, driving the economy, education, social cohesion and individual and collective aspirations. This is why we taking the goal of achieving universal access so seriously". 1 Like |

obaaderemi: Scaw Metals and Guma in R400m new Ghanaian plant November 28, 2013 • No Comment Robert Gumede’s vision of building a Pan African investment vehicle via the Guma Group has received a shot in the arm after landing a steel deal to venture into the oil rich Ghana. An announcement released yesterday has Guma partnering with South African steel manufacturer Scaw Metals and the Jospong Group of Companies to set up a R400m plant in Ghana. The announcement released by Scaw Metals said the company will construct a new grinding media plant in Tema, Ghana. “This new plant seeks to significantly increase the company’s grinding media capacity on the African continent. This move, valued at more than US$40m, is done in partnership with the Guma Group, a South African player, as well as the Jospong Group of Companies, which is based in Ghana.” The announcement said the consortium will bring additional investment to Ghana by increasing the steel product range, through a company which will produce other steel related products including Rolled Products; long steel products, reinforcing bars, low and high-carbon wired rods, reinforcing coil, etc. “Our investment showcases the value that partnerships between the private and public sector can bring to infrastructure development in Africa,” said Gumede. This plant serves as a catalyst for the further enhancement of business to business relationships, which is much needed for job creation and trade in the region.” Gumede‘s march largely represent the changing face of the South African economy. He is part of a new class, few it must be said, of black businessmen who have broken into the mainstream commercial activity and are now looking for a place within the industrial sector and across the continent. Gumede will be largely known for leading the development of an ICT company Gijima into the JSE. His investment vehicle, the Guma Group, is tagged as a Pan-African, black owned multi-disciplinary investment company with operations globally and across the African continent. The group is said to employ over 12 000 people and focusing in energy power generation, ICT, infrastructure development, tourism, property real estate and shopping centre development. Yesterday’s announcement said the Tema plant, with an annual capacity of 50,000 metric tons, should become operational within 18 months and will offer significant job opportunities in the local community.” The Scaw Metals Group is the largest producer of cast high chrome grinding media in the southern hemisphere and is the leading producer and supplier of high chrome and forged grinding balls primarily to the African platinum, copper and gold mining industries.” We are delighted that we will be opening a plant in Ghana and this is outbound investment for a South African entity,” said Markus Hannemann, Chief Executive of the Scaw Metals Group. The Ghanaian government has made a great push for the local manufacturing industry to stimulate economic growth and provide job creation.” He noted that Scaw Metals already has a presence in Ghana. The company’s Ghanaian operation was registered in 2011 as a regional sales office to service the West African region. With offices in Tema, Scaw Ghana functions as a local point of contact for all of the products manufactured in South Africa by the Scaw Metals Group that may be in demand in the region. “From our experience in Ghana thus far, we are certain that we will be able to fully utilise the vast potential in the region. The skills development we will be providing for the employees of the plant will make sure that our plant will have world-class standards and have a significant knock-on effect in the local community,” said Hannemann. “We are looking forward to the partnership with the Scaw Metals Group and supplying the region will grow the business further. We will also look for other steel beneficiation opportunities in Ghana”, says, Joseph Siaw Agyepong, Chairman, Jospong Group of companies. news@ujuh.co.za http://www.google.co.za/url?q=https://www.ujuh.co.za/scaw-metals-and-guma-in-r400m-new-ghanaian-plant/&sa=U&ved=0ahUKEwjsnu7wmKDUAhWBQBQKHV8IBNQQFggmMAg&sig2=ujbQNNo3XXRyyXnaYfW8TA&usg=AFQjCNFyxl7AWyPhv1Jc53e5wdDR4ZzQaA http://www.google.co.za/url?q=http://www.forbes.com/sites/mfonobongnsehe/2016/07/01/the-black-knight-of-africa-how-robert-gumede-is-expanding-his-legacy-across-the-continent/&sa=U&ved=0ahUKEwiErZjCmqDUAhUGyRQKHV44CPwQFggfMAY&sig2=hZUDfC0A-Si3sLfZQ_dogw&usg=AFQjCNGEl2a8VGYyuHfafBG2old4vhX3Lw Many Nigerians think they know a lot about South Africa but dololo!!! 1 Like 1 Share

blackberlin:First you should ask yourself a question, why only Nigerians are being beaten in South Africa out of all foreigners? Why don't Nigerian students studying in South Africa report such incidents if South Africans are anti-Nigerian? what you should know about South Africans is that they don't tolerate nonsense, you should ask Zuma if you don't believe me. 2 Likes |
