When it comes to sleeves, there are basically 2 different types: • The Set-In sleeves • The One-Piece sleeves In the Set-in sleeves ( e.g.Bishop sleeves, Leg 'O' Mutton sleeves, etc.), the sleeve is sewn into the armhole of the bodice. While in the One-piece sleeves (e.g. Raglan, Dolman, Kimono, etc.), the sleeve is developed with the pattern. One difference between the Dolman and the Kimono is that the Dolman has a deeper armhole with a long sleeve tapered towards the wrist. The ability to know and create these different types of sleeves can set you apart as a designer.

Do you know that the only thing stopping you from making that dream dress; the only thing stopping you from getting that dream client; the only thing stopping you from "BLOWING" is your mind and not village people? Let me share just how powerful the mind is: Many years ago, I didn't want to leave a particular place I had gone to visit. Guess what I did? I willed myself to fall ill so I wouldn't have to leave. In less than 10 minutes, I had developed a fever. The fever was so bad that I had to be rushed to the hospital and given an injection to crash it. Was it coincidence? Hell No! I was very hale and hearty prior to that time. All I did was channel my thoughts to getting sick and the universe agreed with me to make it happen. Can we begin a #MindChallenge? Can we begin to will things to happen? Can we begin to take every limitation off our minds and see our good thoughts become a reality?

Are you ready to party?!!! Thank God it's Friday Here are some quick tips on maintaining your Ankara so you look PENG at the next Owambe ![]() • Don't spread your Ankara garments under direct sunlight. The sun tends to bleach the colors out, especially this our African sun ![]() • Don't use detergents to wash your Ankara!!! Your Ankara would hate you for it. Just saying... • Iron your Ankara garments, inside out. Don't apply the heat of the iron to the right side of your Ankara fabric. Ever wondered why salt is added to Ankara when washing? Salt helps to set the color into the fabric and prevents color bleeding. Salt also helps to remove stains from the fabric. In other news, who has Owambe that they are not using? I'm asking for a friend ![]() Have a lovely weekend people!

Let's talk about puff sleeves. Puff sleeves are best used on garments that emphasize the waist. That means having a fitted waist. Puff sleeves are characterized by volume/fullness at the hem and/or sleeve cap. They tend to make the shoulders look broader. So if you have wide shoulders and want to wear puff sleeves, you may have to divert attention away from your shoulders to perhaps your neckline. Now is the time to be creative with your neckline. The type of fabric used will determine the overall look of your puff sleeve. Soft fabrics like chiffon and stiff fabrics like cotton/denim will give the puff sleeve different silhouettes.

Have you heard the Freehand Vs. Patternmaking argument before? I have and I tell you, that argument is not going to end anytime soon. Here's my take on the issue: Freehand is good and seems easy. However, there are some designs you won't be able to create without the use of patterns. Even if you manage to create the likeness of the original design, the fit would be all wrong because your darts were not manipulated. At the end of the day, patternmaking would have saved you time, effort and unnecessary headache ![]()

Style lines are basically seams in a garment which are used to make the garment more appealing to the eye (Aesthetics). Style lines can also be used to absorb darts and thus shape the garment to the wearer's body. In this case, they become functional. I wrote about balancing aesthetics with functionality a while ago. A good fashion designer should know how to strike the right balance. Style lines are best used on garments with contrast colours. Using style lines on print fabrics only like Ankara could be a waste of time as the style lines get 'lost' in the fabric. You may however combine print and plain fabric.
