What is Russia's Poseidon nuclear drone and could it wipe out the UK in a radioactive tsunami?




A popular Russian state TV anchor Dmitry Kiselyov has warned that Moscow could wipe Britain off the map with a nuclear tsunami in retaliation for supporting Ukraine.

In his Sunday evening primetime show on Channel One, one of the most-watched in Russia, Dmitry Kiselyov claimed on May 1 that a strike by the country’s Poseidon nuclear underwater drone could drown the UK under a 500-metre tidal wave of radioactive seawater.

Euronews Next checked his claims with three experts on nuclear weapons, submarines and drones. Here’s what we know - and don’t know - about Russia’s new nuclear torpedo and the damage it could inflict.

The Poseidon underwater drone - also known as Status-6 and in the United States as "Kanyon" - is basically a very large, nuclear-powered autonomous torpedo armed with a nuclear warhead.

What we know of it mostly stems from a 2015 leak on Russian TV of a government project for an underwater nuclear drone.

According to its mission statement, the project was focused on “damaging the important components of the adversary's economy in a coastal area and inflicting unacceptable damage to a country's territory by creating areas of wide radioactive contamination that would be unsuitable for military, economic, or other activity for long periods of time”.

In 2018, a leaked draft of the Pentagon's Nuclear Posture Review acknowledged Russia was developing a "new intercontinental, nuclear-armed, nuclear-powered, undersea autonomous torpedo”.

Much of its actual capabilities remain shrouded in mystery, but its key strengths are thought to be its ability to operate very deep and very fast underwater, making it hard to intercept.

What motivated its development was Russia’s ambition to display a range of weapons that can evade the US missile defence system, said Pavel Podvig, an expert on Russian nuclear forces and senior researcher at the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR).

Along with 10 other countries, Russia, China and Iran will move their armed forces to the Western Hemisphere for military exercises, which are due to begin in mid-August.

The upcoming military exercises are a clear indication that Latin American countries are working to improve relations with Russia, China and Iran.

Maduro recently completed a diplomatic tour of the Middle East, during which he signed a 20-year strategic agreement with Iran, which laid the foundation for an Iranian oil tanker to dock in Venezuela and unload oil from Tehran.

As Iran and Venezuela expand their military and economic ties, Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega has renewed a military pact with Russia, allowing Russian troops, planes and ships to patrol the Central American country's borders and conduct joint military exercises. The military agreement was signed against the backdrop of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, indicating that the presence in Latin America remains a priority for Moscow, even when it faces pressure at its own borders.

China is also active in the region. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi last month signed several economic deals with Latin American countries, namely Uruguay, Nicaragua and Ecuador. The Chinese initiative "One Belt, One Road", a program to increase China's global presence, has also reached Argentina, where a number of infrastructure projects are being implemented today under the leadership of Chinese investors

Uganda announced that it had discovered 31 million metric tons of gold waiting to be mined in the country after several surveys were conducted. A spokesperson from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development in Uganda, Solomon Muyita, said that these reports are aimed at attracting gold miners and investors in the crypto sector.

In a bid to boost the country’s economy, the Ugandan government has licensed Wagagai gold mining company, a Chinese firm to start producing gold products in Busia district. The company embarked on the construction of its gold refinery valued at USD200m in phases in the district in 2016. Muyita said that the discovered gold could start being mined immediately.

Refining gold locally could enhance job creation, and improve social service delivery to those living close to where the mineral is extracted. Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has called for the local refinement of the the commodity, calling any external refinery criminal. “It is criminal for anybody to argue for the continued exports of raw materials in Africa, when there is 90% more value in that product that you are giving to the outsiders” he said.

Tan Chun Chi, the general manager of Wagagai gold mining company, says that the investment has reached US $60 million. He explains that they have been lagging behind in the construction due to the lack of the two licenses. The company has recently obtained a gold production license in March this year and has a 21-year lease to mine gold in the country and expect to double their speed because they expect to begin gold production by July 2023.

The company has invested $200M towards constructing a refining facility. Despite all the gold discovered in the country, the mining difficulty is notably high, and this impacts the amount of gold that is actually mined. Around 2500 to 3000 metric tonnes are mined every year.

“If this is indeed the volume that we have, it is time to clean our house, and do business, in developing ourselves and our country, by going to the middle income status and beyond.” said Winnie Ngabirwe Mineral Development Expert.

Gateman impregnates boss’ daughter

A 20-year-old gateman, Samuel Maikasuw, has been arrested by police operatives of the Lagos State Command for impregnating his boss’ 15-year-old daughter in Igbogbo area of Ikorodu, Lagos.

Maikasuw, who hails from Abaji in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, was arrested, yesterday, when an official of Advocate for Children and Vulnerable Person’s Network notified the police.

It was learned that Maikasuw was once caught molesting the victim sometime last year while working as a security man at Ms Fadiji’s house.

However, he was severely warned never to come near the teenager again.

However, Maikasuw was later transferred to the landlord’s wife’s shop who later converted him to a sales boy, before he impregnated the girl.

The name being changed in June 2022 to troll the embassy during the Ukraine War (2014 to present). China hands out at least twice as much development money as the US and other major powers, new evidence shows, with most of it coming in the form of risky high-interest loans from Chinese state banks.

The sheer amount of Chinese lending is startling. Not too long ago China received foreign aid, but now the tables have turned.

Over an 18-year period, China has granted or loaned money to 13,427 infrastructure projects worth $843bn across 165 countries, according to the AidData research lab at William & Mary, a university in the US state of Virginia.

Much of this money is linked to Chinese President Xi Jinping's ambitious Belt and Road strategy. Starting in 2013, it leverages China's expertise in infrastructure projects, and ample foreign currency, to build new global trading routes.

However, critics fear that the high-interest loans funding many Chinese projects are saddling unsuspecting populations in sky-high debt.

And that's news even to Chinese officials themselves. The AidData researchers - who have spent four years tracing all of China's global lending and spending - say that Chinese government ministries are regularly going to them for information on how Chinese money is being used overseas.

In September 2020, on the brink of bankruptcy, Laos sold a major asset to China, handing over part of its energy grid for $600m in order to seek debt relief from Chinese creditors. Prior to this, Laos had borrow $480m loan from a Chinese bank to fund it's railway project.

Many Chinese state developments loans also demand unusual forms of collateral. Increasingly, Chinese loans appear to require borrowers to promise hard cash earned from selling natural resources.

A deal with Venezuela, for example, demands the Venezuelan borrower deposit the foreign currency earned by selling oil directly into a bank account controlled by China. If a debt payment is missed, the Chinese lender can immediately withdraw the cash waiting in the account. "[That is] income for these very poor countries, dollars and euros, to lock those up in an offshore account that's controlled by a foreign power."

"It really seems like kind of a bread-and-butter strategy they use to signal to their borrower that 'We're the big boss around here'," Brad Parks explains. "Their message is: 'You're going to repay us before anyone else because we're the only ones asking for this prized possession'.

"Almost 40% of sub-Saharan African countries are in danger of slipping into a major debt crisis" according to the Overseas Development Institute, ahead of a major conference on debt being held in London this week.

And the relationship between African nations and China is often seen as a significant part of the problem.

Its critics say that major infrastructure projects carried out by Chinese companies in Africa are too expensive, and burden the host countries with enormous debts they can't hope to repay.

The Chinese government is adamant that its economic relationships with African countries are mutually beneficial and rejects suggestions that it is using debt to expand global influence.

Compared to institutions such as the IMF, World Bank and Paris Club (a group of 22 creditor nations not including China), loans from China are seen by some as much quicker, cheaper, and come with fewer strings attached.

Nigeria spent $402.74m in the 18 month period servicing bilateral loans, even as it borrowed $400m.
Nigeria owes the World Bank a total of $11.51bn as of march 2021, owes China $3.48bn as of the end of June 2021, owes AfDB’s $2.74bn, N17.632 trillion of the domestic debt.
Nigeria’s total public debt stock was N33.107 trillion or USD87.239 billion, as at March 31, 2021.

Nevertheless, 77 oil firms owe Nigeria $6.48b amid huge borrowing.

It is no longer cliche` that everyone wants to be something in life, and by being something they want their life to count for something. But how many person's truly get to this very point? I call it an "apex" point, of which you have poured out a lot of yourself, your talents, your gifts, your skills and at your death bed, you know you are dieing empty. That's something to ponder on for a sec.

I certainly believe that owing to the fact that most person's don't really get to this very point, it sure means that there is either a right or a wrong way to go about it. However we would be looking at it from the "right" perspective. This is by becoming the best version of yourself. The question now is, how do I become the best version of myself?

I have outlined five practical steps towards achieving this feat.

>Know yourself: It is really important for one to truly understand oneself. If you don't know yourself, life would make a mess out of you because you would be trying so hard to be what you are not and what is life if you are doing things that are not in your makeup? Knowing your talents, gifts, and personality is really important because you would know exactly what to channel your energy to that would yield results.

>Be educated: It is not just enough to know your talents and gifts, education is in no small degree, a necessary tool to helping you become the best version of yourself. We live in a generation that believes, education is a scam because of the poor churn out of job opportunities for graduates. Being educated should be seen as a platform to bigger stuff not just as a routine for every young person to carry out to be qualified as a good citizen because take it or leave it, there are still lots of persons that being educated has really helped so much in becoming.

>Have a plan for your life: They say, if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. They didn't lie. Planning is everything. I see it as every pinch of salt, slice of pepper, and other ingredients added to making a sizzling hot pot of soup. What direction do you want your life to take? It is not just enough to have big dreams, but what are the action plans towards making that happen? You need to plan e v e r y t h i n g. What you want to accomplish in a year, five, ten or even as far as twenty five should be put into proper consideration.

>Set goals: Success is premeditated. It is intentional. It doesn't just happen. Setting goals is that extra icing on a pretty good cake. Your plans are much more achievable when you set goals. Goals are like a pointer in a compass of what exactly you should be doing at every point in time. Setting goals means that a person has committed thought, emotion and behaviour towards achieving the goal. Choosing goals that are worthwhile and achievable is also important as not to get yourself weary as though you weren't taking right steps.

>Know your environment: No one becomes a warrior or an achiever without understanding this. It's the key to Dangote's success because he knows he can't compete in the US/European sphere. A fish is very good in the water but a big failure on land and air.

You can become the best version of yourself. It is possible. Let everyday count.

She served as prime minister from January 1966 to March 1977 and again from January 1980 until her assassination in October 1984, making her the second longest-serving Indian prime minister.
She went to war with Pakistan in support of the independence movement and war of independence in East Pakistan, which resulted in an Indian victory and the creation of Bangladesh, as well as increasing India's influence to the point where it became the sole regional power of South Asia.
In 1984, after Gandhi ordered military action in the Golden Temple of Amistrar in Operation Blue Star, her military action claimed the lives of hundreds of Sikhs.
On 31 October 1984, two of Gandhi's Sikh bodyguards shot her with their service weapons in the garden of the prime minister's residence allegedly in revenge for Operation Blue Star.

Sirimavo Bandaranaike was elected the modern world's first female head of government in 1960 when she became prime minister of Sri Lanka, or Ceylon as it was known then. She entered politics after the assassination of her husband Solomon Bandaranaike in 1959.

When she became Prime Minister of Sri Lanka in 1960. She served three terms: 1960–1965, 1970–1977 and 1994–2000.
She is from a majority tribe in Sri Lanka called the Sinhalese. Her pro-Buddhist and pro-Sinhalese policies alienated the Tamil minority, continuous discrimination, her decision to drop English as an official language and her order to conduct all government business in Sinhala, the language of the majority Sinhalese, violent persecution against Sri Lankan Tamils by the Sinhalese dominated Sri Lankan Government.
Sirimavo Bandaranaike pursed policies that encouraged the Buddhist religion, promoted Sinhalese and Buddhist culture, which alienated the Tamil minority. Further problems arose with the President's state takeover of foreign businesses, particularly the petroleum companies, which upset the Americans and the British, who imposed an aid embargo on Sri Lanka. As a result, Bandaranaike moved her country closer to China and the Soviet Union and championed a policy of nonalignment or of neutrality in international affairs.

A civil disobedience campaign was instigated by a part of the country's minority Tamil population who were outraged by her actions which they considered a highly discriminatory act and an attempt to deny Tamils access to all official posts and the law. This led to an increase in Tamil militancy which escalated under succeeding administrations.
Her actions resulted in a bloody civil war. From July 1983-2009, about 80,000 - 100,000 people lost their lives in the 25 years civil war.

She earned her place in history as the world's first ever female prime minister and as mother of her nation's first female head of state.

She remained in office just a few months before her death, but had little real power. She died on election day, having cast her vote for the last time.

In recent times, very precarious tales have been brought to light of the animosities and wickedness that pervades the boarding school system. It is safe to say that, this is not a new occurrence. It only leaves one to wonder how many others have been swept under the carpet.

First, it was the case of Don Davis of Deeper life School, whose mother raised an alarm after her kid was brutally raped by the "senior boys" in the school. This left the boy looking haggard and dishelleved, unlike the normal robust boy his mother knew him to be. It is quite disheartening that sustainable judgement has not come upon the perpetrators of this evil act. It is even sadder that most people did not believe the woman's story uptil now.

Second, it is that of Karen-Happuch Aondodoo Akpagher, a 14 year old student of Premiere Academy, Lugbe, Abuja, who died of sepsis earlier this year. A used condom was found inside her. The school authorities has successfully stonewalled and prevented all information from emerging.

Then, very recently, that of 12-year-old Sylvester of Dowen College Lagos who was beaten to death by his peers after he refused to succumb to pressure to join a cult. While struggling on his death bed, he said to have been given a chemical to drink. He also went further to mention five names involved in the wicked act.

These atrosities are very much prevalent in the elite schools, now more than ever. Little wonder, the stringent lengths, they go to, to cover up these crimes, all for reputation.

How much more damage would be done? How much deaths would occur? How much bloodshed would happen to the very ones the society is supposed to protect? Has it really come to this? Who raised these monsters in the name of children?

I am quite certain, the parents of these kids sent their kids off to boarding schools hoping that they would learn, be treated rightly and become outstanding people in the society. It is quite clear that boarding school is no longer safe for our kids.
