To a discerning and keen observer, paganism as practiced in Pre-colonial Igbo and Christianity are too sides if the same coin. Both share too many similarities. The only difference being Satan which was erroneously construed to be Ekwensu by the imperialist-colonialists. These point of convergence includes but not limited to: ** Both belief systems has one supreme being ditto Yahweh or Chukwu. From whom all creation originated as recounted by the creation fables and Chukwu Okike (the God that creates) ** Both belief systems had provision for medium of communication between God and man. Jesus Christ for Christianity and oracles, diviners and sorts for pre-colonial Igbo. The Igbos believed that Chukwu assigned areas of jurisdiction to these lesser gods while he oversee the whole operation. Hence we have gods like Amadioha manning the skies, Ani in charge of land/fertility and Ahiajoku lording harvest, etc ** Both believed in the concept of guardian angels - cue chi - personal god in Pre-colonial Igbo. One's chi confers on his behalf in the spirit realm and determines to a great extent his fortune or misfortune. Just as one's guardian angel can alter his fate as recounted in the bible experiences of Abraham and Jacob ** Both believe in life after death. While the righteous go to heaven, the envy ends up in hell for an eternity of anguish. Pre-colonial Igbos believed the good becomes ancestors, maintaining ties and interceding on behalf of their living offsprings. ** Both believed in blood sacrifices - be it that of man or animal or son of God These similarities I believe paved way for the quick acceptance of Christianity by the Igbos. The early missionaries probably bamboozled them with their technological advancements in a bid to convince them that his God was superior. Pre-colonial Igbos can be pardoned for failing for such bare-faced hoax. For today's christians, I'm bereft of word. Christianity and paganism are like six and half a dozen. If you must believe fables, I think it's more honorable you believe those concocted by your forebears. |
Lilbrown007:Hell yes Like people don't post on net in China and sorts right. You must think the imperialist-colonialists some kind of heaven send |

Africa in general and Nigeria in particular is still suffering from the devastating impacts of colonialism. One of these is our defective education system. It is pertinent to point out here that the original system of education laid down by the Brits for Nigeria was manipulated to produce just "literate negroes who can read and write the white man's language". This was aimed at raising mid-level civil service manpower who acted as supervisors to the unskilled negro workers. It's quite pathetic that since the Brits left, no government - be it military junta or civilian regime - has deemed it fit to revamp our education system. Successive generations have grown with the mentality of "go to university, graduate and get a good paying job and live large". It's a known fact that Nigeria is in dire need of technology - driven industrialization. The type learnt in an education system built on home - based scientific innovations and practicals. We need schools that will produce engineers who can fabricate nuts, pharmacists who can utilise the leaves and trees around to proffer solutions for ailments, agriculturalist who can soil their fingers growing foods. We need to toss away the clearly outdated syllabuses. Develop new and updated syllabuses that will encourage radical thoughts and home - grown solutions to our mirage of problems. The "certificate brandishing culture" must be severely fought and erased. It should be about what do you know and can bring to the table? Quality and innovation - driven education systems unarguably played a major role in the rapid advancement of Asian tigers like China, Japan and Taiwan et al, India, Malaysia etc. We have over 160 institutions of higher learning that keep churning out Ill-educated graduates using archaic tools. Nigeria has the labour. Nigeria has the market. We just need the will and the technical know - how. It starts with jettisoning the dead-on-arrival education system. Colonialism has ended. Why keep its relics? |
kramfonos:LOOOOL. So its just about the bills? Will you sit @ home and nurse the kids and answer her 'Ma' if she elects to foot the whole bills? ![]() No Man and Woman in a union are equal. Two captains can't man a ship successively. Someone, in this instance the man, has to take charge of the reins of leadership. That doesn't make the woman a lesser being nor does it make her a slave. She still has a crucial role to play in the union/house |
kramfonos:What about men of means that ask their wives to quit their jobs and man the homes? Calm down, dude. No right thinking man should expect his wife to "share the bills". She can support him occasionally. It is still the man's duty to provide for his household. |
Arguably the greatest goalie of all times. OK... Might not be greatest but definitely top 3 ![]() |
Just a lone goal and he's better than Iheanacho? Come on! |
coolsix:LMAO @ Let's fight poverty... by encouraging the poor to stay away from marriage. How convenient? I wish I can show you the salary schedules of many State Government and LG parastatals. People earning as low as N26k and been owed 4 months salaries still pulling through. 6k for rent for a 2 room apartment 25k for feeding 5k for Transportation and Electricity Government school. 5k for any miscellaneous school expense 9k for other sundry expenses. It's a tough one. But many people are doing fine. |
coolsix:By which analysis did you conclude say a family of 4 can't survive on 50k monthly please? Beats me ![]() |
coolsix:The flaw inherent in your argument is the assumption that people's fortunes will remain the same. Should one then kill off his heirs and divorce his spouse should his fortunes take a nosedive for the worse? Should one come out of poverty-induced celibacy to marry should his lot better tomorrow? The keyword is BASIC NEEDS. If a man earns enough to provide the basic needs, he can marry. Comfort and luxury, though desirous, are still wants. |
Josephamstrong1:.1 I guess the reasons vary. Likely financial limitations, still searching for the ideal partner, disillusioned with the massive failure of the marriage institution as shown by the high number of divorces, infidelity and domestic violence, etc .2 No age is good enough. You settle down when YOU ARE READY. .3 Depends on you. If you earn enough to pay the basic bills, you can run a home .4 If she ticks the other boxes, you can marry her. She's a potential golden goose and will surely start popping the golden eggs once she clinches a job |
coolsix:I surmise we're talking realism here. I don't know what their "ideal lifestyle" is but the fact is they're surviving... on lesser than N50k monthly. It matters not where I encourage people to live in. The Poor will always live. Moreso, when we're talking about Nigeria. I hope you know the Per Capita income of Nigerians and our ranking on the global poverty scale |
coolsix:Numerous households comprising at least 6 persons are surviving on far lesser amount in the slums and rural areas |
michaelisafiade:Let it first of all deliver all the believers plagued and ravaged by hunger and diseases globally. Let it deliver simpletons continously fleeced of their hard-earned peanuts by Pastorpreneurs. Let it deliver the innumerable hapless victims of religious violence. Funny lots.... You christians |
cckris:You've been brainwashed beyond redemption. Ekwensu is no devil. Pre-colonial Igbo religion has no force/spirit opposed to Chukwu. It's all fabricated by the colonialist-missionaries |
