ISRAELI defence analysts fear that Tehran has opened arms-smuggling routes across Africa to supply Hamas in the blockaded Gaza Strip after a stash of Iranian weapons was intercepted in Nigeria. The seizure was made in Lagos, one of Africa's busiest ports, by the Nigerian secret service. The capture of the arms, which included Katyusha multiple rocket launchers, underlines fears that Iran is developing a global network for moving weapons and people. Israel is concerned that Tehran is exploiting weak points in global security that have previously been used by drug cartels. FOLLOWING a media report on the appointment of Ogun State governor, Gbenga Daniel, as the chairman of the Nigeria Governor’s Forum (NGF), the incumbent chairman of the forum and presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr Bukola Saraki, on Sunday, said the development was inimical to internal democratic process. Dr Saraki said the appointment contravened “the culture of inclusiveness and consensus on which the NGF was built,” noting that no meeting was convened on the said appointment, which ought to have been done in “accordance with the laid down procedures” of the forum. In a statement signed by the Director-General of the forum, Mr Asishiana Okauru, and made available to the Nigerian Tribune, the Kwara State governor decried the appointment, which according to him, violated “due process and strict adherence to laid done procedures paramount in any democratic institutions.” “Dr Saraki wishes to note further that the strength of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, which has played key roles in resolving some important political challenges in our country in recent years despite its varied membership, depends on the sense of belonging and inclusiveness that it is able to give to all its members. “And for the NGF to continue to play this critical role in the politics and governance of this country in the future, its leadership must be positioned to readily inspire the confidence of all its members and be seen to be guided, Read More On www.tradeonlinenigeria.com |
Abuja — Former chief executive officer of British Petroleum John Browne is to lead a group of bidders for $4 billion of Nigerian oil fields being sold by Royal Dutch Shell Plc, a report published by the Sunday Times stated yesterday. Shell's plan to reduce its investments in Nigeria has been described by some industry watchers as a reaction to the hassles in Nigeria's exploration terrain. "Browne's Riverstone Management Ltd. is interested in bidding, as is KKR & Co. and Blackstone Group LP," the report said. "Another bid group includes Perenco SA, Addax & Oryx Group Ltd. and Oando Plc," the report added. Any bidder will have to have a local partner to meet government requirements, it said. The report further said that partners ENI SpA and Total SA have the right to buy Shell's 30 per cent stake in the fields, and Nigeria's majority holding national oil company (NNPC) must approve any deal. LEADERSHIP reported last week that Africa-focused oil and gas company, Afren Plc., said its Nigerian unit had agreed to buy a stake in oil fields in Nigeria from http://www.tradeonlinenigeria.com/finance/ |
