Jim Ovia is described as the ‘Godfather of banking in Nigeria’ by Forbes Africa, Jim Ovia is quite popular for his business dexterity and leadership skills, especially in the banking sector.

A Forbes cover story on him says, “Banking is where he began life as a clerk; it was also the vehicle that carried him to his fortune.”

Jim Ovia was born on the 4th of November, 1951 to the large family of Obi Olihe of Agbor-Obi, in Agbor, Delta State. Talking about early life challenges that could have truncated his future, Ovia wrote in his memoir:

“When I was just four years old, my father—who was in his mid-fifties—suffered a massive heart attack and died several weeks later due to inadequate medical facilities. Left to fend for herself and her family, my newly widowed mother called upon her intuitive entrepreneurial skills to set up her own small trading business.

“My oldest brother, who was almost twenty years my senior and working in Lagos, sent part of his wages home each month to help pay my school expenses.”

This was the condition that surrounded his early years, making him realize in time the importance of education. It later became his motivation to establish the James Hope College, a co-educational boarding school where 50% of the students are on scholarship.

President Muhammadu Buhari, on Thursday 30th July mourned a former Minister of Science and Technology, Major General Sam Momah.

His condolence message was contained in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina.

The statement was titled “President Buhari mourns Maj Gen Sam Momah.”

President Muhammadu Buhari has named railway stations along the Lagos-Ibadan and the Itakpe-Ajaokuta-Warri corridors after “deserving citizens who contributed to the progress and development of their respective communities and the nation at large”, the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has said.

This was contained in a statement by the Ministry of Transportation on Monday titled, ‘Buhari Names Railway Stations After Prominent Nigerians’.

According to the statement signed by the ministry’s Director, Press and Public Relations, Eric Ojiekwe, the minister disclosed that the Apapa Station has been named after the All Progressives Congress stalwart, Bola Tinubu; the Abeokuta Station named after respectable Nobel Laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka, while the Ajaokuta Station was conferred on Olusola Saraki, the late father of former Senate President, Bukola Saraki.

Chief Bode Thomas (October 1919 - November 23,1953) was a Nigerian lawyer, politician, statesmen and traditional aristocrat. He attended C.M.S grammer missionary school founded by sameul Ajayi Crowther. He travelled to London to study law alongside Remi Fani-Kayode and Chief FRA Williams.

After he returned back to Nigeria he established the law firm namely Thomas, Williams and Kayode in 1948, together with Chief Frederick Rotimi Williams and Chief Remilekun Fani Kayode.

In 1949, he became the Balogun of Oyo, the Balogun of Oyo is a royal name given to a villager's war head although it can also mean one who can't be defeated or conquered.

The family of late Tolulope Arotile, Nigeria's first female combat helicopter pilot is now demanding a probe on her death, proclaiming the Nigeria Air Force's account that she died in a freak accident, does not add up.

Damilola Adegboye, her immediate elder sister insists the family wants a thorough investigation into the late officer’s death.

The late combat pilot died on Tuesday at the age of 24 after a car reportedly belonging to her ex-schoomate hit her while reversing.

Adegboye told journalist on Thursday that, “We are not convinced that Tolu can die like that in a freak accident. I know that the military is well trained in the art of investigation; we want them to carry out a thorough investigation that can convince us beyond all doubts that the incident that led to her death was the truth.”

5.Hon. Wahab Adegbenro
Wahab Adegbenro, The commissioner for health in Ondo State, died of COVID- 19 complications on Thursday, 2nd July 2020. Mr Adegbenro died at the states infectious disease hospital where he was receiving treatment.

6.Tunde Buraimoh
He was a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly. He died on 10th July 2020

7.Hon. Umar Audi Jauro
He is a member of the Borno State House of Assembly. Reports from the state quoted sources as confirming that the deceased lawmakers died due to the pandemic.

8.Hon.Wakil Bukar
He is also a Borno State House of Assembly.

9.Alhaji Suleiman Adamu
Adamu is a lawmaker representing Nasarawa Central constituency at the Nasarawa State House of Assembly. His death is linked with the Covid-19 virus.

10.Shuaibu Danlami
Shuaibu Danlami, a Director for special services and politics at the office of the SSG , Gombe State and a member of the state taskforce on COVID-19 died of the virus on May 31.

As intrigues continue to highlight the forthcoming Edo election, a group of unknown people has placed the video of Governor Umar Ganduje of Kano state pocketing dollars on a big billboard.

The governor could be seen collecting the dollars before rolling them into his white dress, “babanriga,” in one of a series of questionable deals allegedly struck over a span of several months.

A Nigerian media, which first published the video, said the alleged $230,000 collected by the governor was part of a series of cash advances to the governor in a total bribery deal of $5 million.

In January 2019, this publication reported that a suit seeking the investigation into bribe allegation as portrayed in a series of videos, was dismissed by a Federal High Court sitting in Kano.

Ahead of the gubernatorial election in Edo state scheduled for September, the scandalous video has been put on a big billboard where it can be seen by commuters and motorists.

A social activist, Deji Adeyanju shared the video on his Twitter account on Thursday, July 9.

In what started as a political jibe highlighting the campaign into the Edo state gubernatorial election, Governor Ganduje had said that his Rivers counterpart will be "isolated" till the end of the election.

But in his reaction, Wike who is the chairman of Obaseki campaign council for Edo election said “antics and shenanigans” cannot distract PDP from taking over the south-south state.

The Rivers governor said Ganduje should be the one in the isolation centre because he was caught red-handed pocketing dollars in his babariga cloth.
