Whether you are in a serious relationship , engaged , married, or remarried, money is one topic that will keep coming up . Do you ever talk about it? At that point in a relationship when it is clear that things are getting serious and that your decisions or plans are beginning to affect your significant other , it is time to talk about money .

Money conversations don ’ t have to be awkward , but don’ t bring it up too early . If you talk about money on the first or second date , you will seem like a gold digger ! One of you might think it’ s all right to bring up specifics and data just a month into the relationship ; to the other , that’ s a warning sign to run for your life and money !

Focus on the marriage , not the wedding .
Many couples find themselves going into serious debt due to the expenses of their wedding and honeymoon . Although everyone wants a fairy - tale wedding , carefully weigh up your options . You can have a lovely wedding without going broke or getting into debt.

What is your partner ’ s money personality ?

Look out for telltale signs. Without talking specifically about money , you can deduce a lot about a person ’ s money personality by their values , conversation , and lifestyle ; this is often shaped by childhood experiences and role models , usually parents. Different personality types handle money differently.
Is your significant other living way above their means ? Does she insist on travelling business class even when she is in debt? Does he live in an awful slum , but is paying a hefty lease payment for a flashy car ?
Is your partner an extravagant spendthrift or a saver ? Are you risk - averse and have carefully built your emergency fund , whilst your partner risks their life savings in a cryptocurrency scheme ?
When two people get married, it can be a shock and surprise to discover how your spouse views and handles money, especially if it is quite different from the way you do. Try not to be judgmental even if you don ’ t agree .

Talk about your aspirations

Knowing your partner’ s aspirations and dreams for the future can be an indication of how much they expect to earn in future or at least it gives you some indication of where they see themselves .
Where they expect to live and the kind of education they plan for children are all fairly strong indicators of aspirations . Remember though that aspirations remain not more than dreams, if the dreamer has no clear goals and a detailed plan to achieve them . Be careful about potential; it isn ’t always realised !

Avoid keeping money secrets

Nothing breaks trust in a serious relationship or a marriage as quickly as finding out that your partner lied to you, or deliberately hid some important information from you. Naturally , this is tough , and many couples have difficulty being open and transparent about money matters .
Money secrets might include secret debt that your partner knows nothing about. It could also be about having some money or property hidden away . When these secrets are uncovered it leads to very deep- seated hurt and resentment that has damaged or broken relationships .
However , one must be realistic ; every situation is unique. There are situations where one spouse may need to secure family assets where there is financial abuse , or where a family ’ s financial security is in jeopardy from vices including alcohol, drug abuse , or gambling , which can ruin a family ’ s prospects .

Talk about your financial obligations .

Are you or both of you in debt? It is useful to know how much is owed and the status of those loans . Usually , a person is responsible only for his or her own debts ; so if you did not sign the contract or loan agreements for your spouse ’ s debt , you usually should not be liable for that debt.

In reality however , debt collectors have been known to arrive at the family home to cart away personal effects including the car and furniture or even seal up the house ! Even if they don’ t , debt directly affects quality and standard of living ; so don ’t ignore it .
What are your responsibilities towards the extended family including siblings and aging parents ? Will they live with you ? Is there regular child support and alimony to be paid from any previous relationship ?

Talk about your financial roles

Decide how you are going to share financial responsibilities . Will you operate joint accounts, separate accounts or a combination of the two ? Will you create a budget together or will it be “everyman for himself?” How will you split household costs ? Fifty - fifty or pro - rata based on income ? Will it bother either of you if the woman is the primary earner ?
Financial abuse

Avoid using money to manipulate , punish or control your spouse in any way .

This is called financial abuse . It is more common if one spouse is the breadwinner whilst the other is unemployed or stays home to mind the children . Often the victims must account for every penny spent and must beg for money to purchase even the most basic necessities in life ..

Financial abuse is rarely discussed as it is often hidden away behind the confines of what appears to be a “ normal ” relationship .
Money matters are a leading cause of friction , separation and divorce . Outward appearances can be very deceptive; ideally , try to find out what you can before you tie the knot .

However , people do change , and there will still be surprises .
The key is to keep talking . The more you talk, the more you learn . There is no right or wrong way ; look at your own relationship and decide what works for you. If one method fails , simply change to another .
Science/Technology / Nigeria, South Africa Record Strong Growth In Phone Market by VERQUEST111: 12:30am On Mar 13, 2018
Ife Ogunfuwa with agency report

Africa ’ s two biggest markets saw extremely strong growth in the shipment of smartphones and feature phones , up 19 . 9 per cent quarter -on - quarter in Nigeria and 27 . 0 per cent in South Africa .

However , Africa ’ s smartphone market experienced a quarter - on- quarter decline of 6 . 4 per cent during fourth quarter of 2017 , according to the latest insights announced by International Data Corporation .

The global technology research and consulting firm ’ s Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker shows smartphone shipments were down to 20 . 3 million units for the quarter.

IT News Africa reports that year on year , this represents an 18 . 0 per cent decline , meaning the YoY improvement seen in the previous quarter did not extend to the year ’s final – and traditionally strongest – quarter .

In the feature phone space , shipments totalled 33 . 4 million units , up 3 . 1 per cent QoQ after decreasing in the previous quarter . Year on year , the feature phone market was up 9 . 9 per cent . Feature phones continue to account for a majority share ( 62 . 2 per cent of the region ’ s overall mobile phone market as they adequately address the needs of consumers that have limited purchasing power and require a reliable long - lasting mode of communication , particularly in rural areas .

Combining smartphones and feature phones together , the overall Africa mobile phone market saw shipments of 53 . 7 million units in Q 4 2017 , which represents downturns of 0 . 7 per cent QoQ and 2 . 6 per cent YoY .

North Africa also experienced a slight increase, although there were declines across most other markets , which explains the region ’ s overall decline .
“ Major campaigns took place around Black Friday and during the lead up to Christmas , which positively impacted consumer spending in Nigeria and South Africa , ” a research manager at IDC , Ramazan Yavuz , said.

“ While Nigeria continues to recover from recession and consumer spending is on the rise , there are also clear signs of improvement in South Africa . The end to the political crisis means that challenging economic conditions will be addressed as a priority by the new government , which will have a positive effect on consumer confidence and spending on mobile phones . ”

In terms of the vendor landscape , Transsion brands continued to lead the smartphone category in Q 4 2017 with 30 . 4 per cent share , followed closely by Samsung on 27 per cent .

“ The Transsion Group maintains its top position by designing attractively priced devices that address the specific needs of each local market – a strategy the group proudly refers to as its ‘ glocal ’ approach , ” a senior research manager at IDC , Nabila Popal said.

“ Despite the significant presence of Transsion brands in most African markets , it is important to note the increasing prevalence of local brands that are gaining considerable share in their home markets and slowly expanding to surrounding countries . ”
In the feature phone space , Tecno and itel – both of which are Transsion brands – continued to dominate in Q 4 2017 with a combined share of 57 . 2 per cent .
IDC ’ s research shows that 4 G phones are growing in popularity , finally accounting for a majority share of the smartphone market at 56 . 8 per cent .

Shipments of 4 G devices were up 3 . 9 per cent QoQ in Q 4 2017 , with a drop in prices for entry - level 4 G phones and an increase in the number of 4 G networks across the continent driving this growth .
“ Despite the push of operators towards 4 G , the price differential between 3 G and 4 G devices together with the price sensitivity of African consumers means that many people in Africa still prefer 3 G phones , ” Popal says .

Looking ahead, IDC expects Africa ’ s overall mobile phone market to grow 0 . 7 per cent QoQ in Q 1 2018 , with overall shipments to increase slightly through 2018 , leading to YoY growth of two per cent for the year as a whole.

Demand for feature phones is expected to remain strong , although the IDC expects vendors to drive smartphone uptake by offering more features in affordable price bands .

Science/Technology / Govt Agencies Still Host Data Outside Nigeria – Adegbiji by VERQUEST111: 12:23am On Mar 13, 2018
The General Manager , MDXi , a MainOne company , Mr . Gbenga Adegbiji , speaks on the need for increased data centre capacity in Africa to meet the growing demand by business organisations in this interview with IFE OGUNFUWA

What services does the MDXI offer ?

The MDXi is a fully - owned subsidiary of MainOne but it is focused on the development of data centres and cloud services across West Africa . We offer cloud and co - location services to enterprises in Nigeria and other West African countries .

Are there enough data centres to cater to the needs of businesses in Nigeria ?

In terms of data centre capacity , we don ’ t have enough. If you look at it globally , co - location as a business is just coming to this part of the world and this is being occasioned by the trend in technology . Today , we have more people depending on technology than ever. We have businesses that operate 24 hours every day and on social media as against the traditional ways of running businesses. The world is coming together and technology is linking the world . This is one of the things encouraging the development of data centre services in Africa . As technology advances and people depend more on it, we will still need to build more data centres . We still have certain areas that we have not fully taken advantage of in the use of technology to become more profitable .

What are the reasons for the expansion of the MDXi data centres ?

The expansion plan is occasioned by many things . One is the upsurge in the use of ICT and the increased rollout of fibre infrastructure across Africa , which enables businesses . We have tech start- ups coming up . That is one of the things encouraging the development of data centres . The government and business organisations are beginning to see the benefits of outsourced data centres rather than building their own infrastructure. They are beginning to see the advantages that the outsourced data centres give to them in terms of predictability of their CAPEX and OPEX . They don ’ t need to invest for them to be able to enjoy data centre services. Regulation is also gradually affecting the way data centre adoption is being seen . We see government of different countries and in Nigeria encouraging people to keep their data within the country . Enterprises are beginning to invest in fast - growing digital economy and moving their IT - work load to the cloud rather than investing in hardware . Enterprises are leveraging shared resources to reduce the CAPEX in the IT . This is making them to be more agile, meaning that they can respond faster to the demand of their customers .

What are the expansion plans of the MDXi ?

When we started the Lekki data centre , we invested $ 25 m in the building and infrastructure fit out of 150 racks which was completed in 2015 . Between 2016 and 2017 , we invested another $ 10 m in a further expansion from 150 to 300 racks . This year , we are developing the second part of the data centre , which is another 300 racks to 450 racks . We are investing $ 6 . 8 m ( N 2 . 5 bn) this year in the development of the second wing and will be completed by April . Another $ 3 m will be required for the final fit out to 600 racks . Altogether, $ 40 m is estimated to be required for the Lekki data centre .
The other plan we have in Nigeria is a data centre at the Sagamu Industrial Estate . That has commenced and is expected to be completed by mid - 2019 . Initial investment of about $ 16 m is expected and will grow as the demand increases . We have footprints across West Africa . In Ghana , we are seeing opportunities there . The companies are beckoning on us to develop data centres with the understanding of what we do here in Nigeria and how our operations have enhanced businesses . We are developing co - location services in Ghana starting from this year and it is expected to be completed in June . That will also expand as the demand increases . Our parent company has a piece of land in Cote d’ Ivore and we seeing an opportunity to build data centres there and in Senegal .
Business organisations are being encouraged to host their data centres in the country .

To what extent is this being enforced ?

The government is taking a lead in this area . Not too long ago , the Federal Government partnered MainOne and the MDXi to enable the ease of doing business and by that singular act, Nigeria moved 24 points up the ranks of the ease of doing business and this got us a PEBEC impact award .

And if the government is taking a lead in this , we can take it further a little by making the regulation stricter so that other multinationals that operate in Nigeria can be forced to host data locally . That will definitely create a lot of opportunities and benefit for the country .

Which sector of the economy is lagging behind others in the local hosting of data ?

A lot small enterprises host their data outside the country and they don ’ t even know where their servers are hosted . Ministries and other parastatals have their data hosted outside the country . I don ’ t know where the National Bureau of Statistics , the National Population Commission and the Nigeria Immigration Service host their data . There are so many government parastatals that need to embrace this initiative. When government allows its information to be hosted outside the country , it is being hosted with people who could look like friends but when it comes to international dealings , there are no permanent friends and enemies .

Really , it exposes Nigerian information to the public and this is a cause for concern . America will never host its data outside the country , same with China. Other parastatals need to embrace this for security reasons. Sometimes ago , a building was constructed by the Chinese government and given to the African Union in Addis Ababa . About two years ago , they now realised that the Chinese government has actually inserted a chip that monitors everything and collects the data . It means they can actually manipulate all the African companies to their benefit. For me , I see this as a second colonisation and we should not allow that to happen . Before now , there might not have been the right technology and skills to be able to do what we are doing now . But with the MDXi coming up in 2015 to launch $ 40 m investment in data centre , we have had international auditors to audit these data centres . We have been certified by Uptime Institute as a tier III data centre as well as ISO 27001 and ISO 9001 .

Politics / Goodluck Jonathan Gets New Appointment by VERQUEST111: 11:58pm On Mar 04, 2018
Former President, Goodluck Jonathan, has been appointed as head of a team of observers to Sierra Leone’s general election scheduled to take place on March 7, 2018.

Jonathan is scheduled to leave for Freetown on Friday as leader of the Election Observation Mission of the Elect0ral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa (EISA).

A statement issued by the ex-president’s spokesman Mr. Ikechukwu Eze said Jonathan would be leading the Mission which has observers drawn from civil society organisations and election management bodies from across the continent.

It said the former president is pleased to be part of the process “in support of a peaceful and transparent election in Sierra Leone.”

EISA is a not-for-profit election-focused organization that is working with national, regional, Pan-African and global partners throughout the African continent. It is based in South Africa with field offices across the continent and has supported or observed over 100 elect0ral and political processes in Africa.

A statement from EISA notes that the mission’s assignment is in line with the organisation’s “vision of an African continent where democratic governance, human rights and citizen participation are upheld in a peaceful environment.

In this regard, “EISA gives focus to the crucial role that election observation plays in promoting the transparency of elect0ral processes and lesson learning among nations. Consequently, EISA believes that international observers play a crucially supportive role in increasing public confidence and enhancing the credibility of the elect0ral process.”

Its work extends beyond elect0ral support to include other democracy and governance fields such as political party support, legislative strengthening and civil society engagement of the African Peer Review Mechanism. EISA has current and past field offices in countries like Burundi, Central African Republic (CAR),

Chad, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Gabon, Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique, Rwanda, Somalia, Sudan, Zambia and Zimbabwe. This reflects its broader geographical mandate and coverage.

Politics / Power Sector Losing N24bn Monthly To Imported Fuel –fashola by VERQUEST111: 12:28am On Feb 13, 2018
The Nigerian electricity supply industry is losing an estimated N24 bn monthly as a result of the importation of fuel such as diesel for alternative sources of energy, the Minister of Power, Works and Housing , Babatunde Fashola , has said.

According to Fashola , Nigerians consume about 300 million litres of diesel every month and 75 per cent of this volume is imported , while about 40 per cent is used in generators to produce electricity .

The minister stated these at the 24 th monthly power sector stakeholders’ meeting hosted by the Transmission Company of Nigeria in Abuja on Monday, and explained that about N 24 bn was being lost by the sector as a result of the importation of fuel on a monthly basis .

Fashola , who was represented by the Minister of State II for Power, Works and Housing , Suleiman Hassan , said, “ Many power consumers use diesel . Diesel importation has been declining over the last two years . Many are reporting that they ran their generators for noticeably few hours .
This is progress . However , Nigerians still consume about 300 million litres of diesel every month and most of this is used to power generators.
“ About 75 per cent is imported , putting pressure on scarce foreign exchange . Assuming 40 per cent of the consumption is used for power generation at an average of price of N200 per litre, the electricity industry is losing N 24 bn every month largely to imported energy. ”

He also stated that the amount used in importing fuel as an alternative source for generating power could be channelled for use in the electricity supply industry , as about 2 , 000 megawatts of power remained unutilised in the sector .

Fashola said, “ There is about 2 ,000 MW of electricity generating capacity that is unutilised. Therefore , the challenge of the moment before the industry is how to deliver the unutilised capacity to consumers , who are willing to pay for it and are already paying dearly for alternatives .

“ Problems like this require creative solutions and we don’ t have any time to waste . The N701 . 9 bn payment reassurance programme is a creative solution that appears to be having the desired effect for stabilising the gas and generation end of the electricity industry .

“ If we can creatively and constructively focus on specific win- win projects , four policies provide effective tools to quickly resolve the challenges we now face. The first two , the eligible customer regulation and the meter service provider regulation, are already subjects of detailed discussions and NERC regulatory action . ”

Fashola added that the eligible customer regulation allowed large consumers to buy their power directly from the generation companies and then enter into contracts with the Transmission Company of Nigeria and distribution companies to have the power delivered to them .

“ To plan an orderly win - win implementation of this policy , the ministry is hosting a discussion with the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria and other interested large consumers of the policy on Tuesday ( today) , ” the minister said .

He stated that the meter service provider regulation could unlock investments in metering , which was urgently needed to boost consumer trust and collection efficiency .

The minister added “Government seeks to apply that policy through private companies and local meter manufacturers to invest N39 bn in meters as settlement of a court judgement in favour of the government .

“ The distribution expansion programme aims to rapidly construct 2 , 500 MVA of dedicated 33 kV lines and packaged substations to deliver unutilised power to target consumers and Discos . It is our hope that we will all put our heads together to serve the public effectively . ”

Investment / We Have Received No Document On Listing From MTN – SEC by VERQUEST111: 12:33am On Feb 02, 2018
Stanley Opara

Contrary to the belief that MTN Nigeria ’ s discussion with the Securities and Exchange Commission with respect to the telco ’ s planned listing on the Nigerian Stock Exchange has reached advanced stage , investigation by our correspondent shows that SEC has yet to receive any document from MTN indicating an interest .

When The PUNCH reached SEC to confirm the state of affairs , a top official of the commission said the department concerned with new listings on the local bourse was not in possession of any document showing that MTN had a listing programme on the Nigerian Stock Exchange .

Responding to queries from our correspondent on MTN Nigeria ’ s communication with SEC as regards it well publicised listing on the Exchange , the source said, “there is no such thing in a document here . In fact , they have not come to us . ”

The Chief Executive Officer , NSE , Mr . Oscar Onyema , told newsmen mid - January this year that the Exchange would not comment on the planned listing of MTN as it ( NSE ) was not in the right position to speak for the telco .

Onyema said, “ MTN has to tell its own story , and not us doing so for it. ”
Reacting to the planned listing of the telecoms firm , an official of MTN , who pleaded anonymity, told our correspondent that the company was still committed to its plan to list on the Exchange .
The official told our correspondent that “the listing process is on course. ”

In November 2017 , the MTN Group Limited said it was focused on laying the groundwork for an initial public offering of its Nigerian business and should complete the process in the next six months , meaning May 2018 latest .

Its Chief Executive Officer , Rob Shuter, was quoted to have said, “We have a lot of advisers running around and getting everything ready , ” in an interview with Bloomberg TV.

He added , “ It’ s a complicated process and there’ s a lot of regulation that needs to be arranged . We are moving forward well with the project and anticipate concluding that in the next six months or so . ”
MTN agreed to the IPO as part of the settlement of a $ 1 bn fine imposed by the Nigerian Communications Commission on it in 2015 .

The firm , which is Africa ’ s biggest wireless operator by sales, incurred the penalty after missing a deadline to disconnect unregistered subscribers amid a security crackdown in the country . Since then , the CEO said he had been “ pleased ” with MTN ’ s operation in Nigeria , the biggest of the Johannesburg- based company’ s 22 markets across Africa and the Middle East .

In January last year , the NSE said it was working “ very closely” with MTN on the listing of its shares in the country ’ s bourse.

“ The pressure on MTN has never been higher to list , ” the NSE CEO told a business conference then , adding, “There ’ s a project team working with them . ”
Onyema said he expected MTN ’s listing to drive the IPO market , which has virtually slowed down in the past year .

MTN had appointed Stanbic IBTC Capital , Standard Bank of South Africa and Standard Advisory London , and Citigroup Global Markets, as joint transaction advisors and global coordinators , with Stanbic acting as the lead issuer.
