Business5 Simple And Amazing Ways To Fund Your Startup Ideas by verticalngn(op): 8:32am On Jun 19, 2018
An idea is worthless and useless without funding. Many ideas remain in the belly since there is no funding. Funding a startup or a business is bringing to reality a conceived bright idea with money.

Money answers all. An idea without funding remains idea until found in the market and widely used. In this post, we list 5 simple and amazing ways to fund your startup ideas.

5. RAISE FUND FROM FAMILY AND FRIENDS

Smiles! People don’t want to give out their money and nobody is to be blamed for that. It is their hard earned money and they have right over it. But wait, not everybody thinks like that. There are some bright, intelligent, understanding and free giving members of your family and friends that all what they need is that you convince them with what you want to use the money for.

The truth is that, not everybody is father Christmas, you must do your own assignment by presenting a well planned idea with reasons they must freely give you their money.

Just list at least twenty member of your family and friends that you know they are well doing and that have at least 20% potential to give out freely and know that you are to convince them with 80% though. The secret here is that, don’t ask them for a particular amount, just present your idea and budget to them and tell them to give any amount to support you.

Another strategy is that, let assume you want to raise ₦10,000, what of if 20 people give you ₦500 each? Just tell your 20 friends, guy please I need ₦500 and they will give before they know it because it is a very small amount.

See, in this method, you will face many rejections,, determination is the key here.

4. OFFER FREELANCE OR A COMMUNITY SERVICE

For you to be an entrepreneur, one of the attributes is to be versatile in many things. You must be able to have different skills from writing to leadership to technical to critical thinking and analysis etc. If you have these, then you have fund for your startup already. There are so many existing businesses that need that your simple skill, why don’t you offer them a freelance service for a token.

This has so many advantages to your upcoming startup in terms of spreading fast when launched because you have a market already through the medium you are offering freelance services. There are also many freelancing website where you can offer services to fund your idea.

3. PERSONAL SAVING

We should not assume you don’t have money because you eat and buy new wears all the time. Even without using the number 5 method, people give you money freely. Then it is time to start saving.

When your idea is hot like fire in your mind, you will know how to save your last dime to make it come to reality. As a youth Corp member, I saved 80% of my monthly allowance because what I want to do with my life after Youth Service was hot in my mind. You too can adopt this approach in raising fund for your idea.

Yes! Saving is not easy, it takes determination. There are some banks and platforms like piggybank.com that can help you in saving for your startup. All what you have to do is approach them and give them authority over your savings for a particular time. Before you know it, your fund is complete and your product ready for development.

2. BRING IN FINANCIAL PARTNER

Yes! It is becoming technical. We can’t shy away from the fact that the above methods may not work optimally. Some people don’t want to give their money without anything in return. Method of saving may not work too as your idea may require huge amount to be implemented.

Then, you will need to present your idea to a financial partner or venture capitalists with a stake in the business. What many financial partners or venture capitalists are looking for is a convincing idea that if they put their money, they will in return get good profit on their investment. So, your idea must be solving real life challenging problems, able to scale in a very short time and have a great ability to bring in money in short or long run.

You see, you have a great job to do here. The point is that there many people that have the fund you need, all you need is to convince them. There are financial institutions everywhere like banks that work in this line, approach them and pitch your idea to them.

1. SOURCE FOR GRANTS

Grant has put smile to the face of may entrepreneurs because grant is a free equity (that is they give you free) fund. This has become the best way to raise fund for a startup. But this come with a great price to get the prize of grant.

Your idea must be super excellent and solving real life problem and you must be ready to compete. There millions of entrepreneurs applying for the same grant application. So, you must be excellently exceptional to receive grants from any organisation.

Suggested Read: Five Grants Application closing soon

You must develop a writing and story telling skill to convince the grantors. All what the grantors want from you is for you to convince them with how your idea will solve society problems and impact the social community. Without a concrete idea of writing and story telling, grant may not work for you.

It all start from sourcing for which grants application is on going and its benefits. After sourcing, you fill the application form and that is where your writing skill and story telling starts. If you are successfully selected, you go for pitching by verbally and visually present your idea to your grantors. Then if you do exceptionally well, the grant becomes yours and other benefits attached to it.

Hope you enjoyed it. Kindly use the comment form for further clarification on any of the points.

Business7 Tips To Be A Successful Student Entrepreneur by verticalngn(op): 5:41pm On May 10, 2018
What do you do when you have a great business idea as a student and at the same time a lot of classes to attend, assignments to do and many exams and test to do? This question is what has incapacitated many student entrepreneurs from starting out their businesses right away from the school where they have good market.

If you are in the same category, these tips is best for you to balance up and to be successful both in your business and academics.

Understand Yourself
Human being are of different capacity and capability to carryout some tasks. And besides this, there different choices that can come in place.

So, as a student that needs to start a business and at the same time balance up academics, you must understand yourself. You ask yourself some questions like.. Will I be able to merge both business and academics together? Of course, you can. In as much there so many student entrepreneurs on campus, you too can. So, just understand yourself and your capability. Your interest in the area of the business you want to makes it easy for you to achieve success.

Manage Your Time Well
It is glaring here that you need a whole lot of time. Business will take your time while school is demanding more time. Having understand your capability, go back to your drawing board. Map out your business of interest and the time it will take to be successful in it and that will not affect your academics. Depending on the choice of your business, you may need to cut some daily activities both in the school and social. Managing your time is to venture in the business that will not take all your day for it to be successful. There so many businesses you can do as a student that will not take your time. Read some of them here. Understanding the complexity of your course of study too is part of managing your time.

Network with other Students

Having more friends most especially in your department will go a long way helping you to go along with classes. The point is that you may not be in class every time. So, having many friends that are nice can cover up for you in the area of attendance, calling you during emergency, help with notes etc. School activities are very demanding, if you are giving all the time for it, you will not be able to do well in your business and both may be affected in the long run.

Build a Team

Running a business alone can be tiring and boring. So, in this case, as a student, you need to get some smart students like you that are brilliant in terms of academics and are business oriented. Bring them together to whatever business you are doing. This will help in expanding your business tentacles in the school environments and others will be able to cover up for you in case of emergency.

Start Your Business Small
I always encourage starting small but never remain small. Since you are a student, you need to know how things will work well by starting small and gradually getting to the market. Start by introducing your business to your friends, lecturers so that they will know what you are doing. In fact when some lecturers know what you are doing, they won’t give you tough time and they will even be your customer. So, that is another opportunity for you to utilize.

Embrace Technology

The only way your business can grow beyond that school environment is for you to adopt technology into your business. This will enable you to offer your product or services to other schools or cities. Having an online presence is very important. Social medias, web presence etc are all available for you to reach many prospects.

Check and Balance
You must have a track record of your activities both in academics and business. One must not affect another. If your business is affecting your academics, you need to check and balance and vice versa. The point is that only a successful student will be praised. So, be successful in both and do well globally.

BusinessRe: Breaking! Zinox Parent Company Of Yudala Bought Konga by verticalngn(op): 1:38pm On Feb 03, 2018
It is well with Nigerian companies
verticalngn:
Venture Hunt was hinted last month about an acquisition talk between Konga and Yudala, it has now been confirmed that it has finally closed and Konga’s journey as an independent company just came to an end.

Zinox group is being reported as the acquirer. Zinox being the parent company of Yudala acquired the company for $10m – $15m (according to our source close to the negotiation) and the two companies will be integration with potential to expand across Africa.

Yudala model is different, it combines offline with online commerce giving customers a complete experience. We see this as a strength and could help it better execute e-commerce strategies more than Konga could (given its burn rate).

The acquisition includes; Konga.com, Kongapay, and KOS-Express. This is a total package. The acquisition will also see the company recall some fired staff in a bind to revisit some products and build more capacity as it starts a new journey.

BusinessHow to use the Whatsapp for Business in Nigeria as it is officially available by verticalngn(op):
When Whatsapp Inc launched the Whatsapp for Business, it was not available in some countries including Nigeria. The good news now is that the app now available for Nigerians to use and verify their phone numbers.

The following are the step by step procedures to take to start using the app as written by Joy Eneghalu a Whatsapp for Business user.

How to start using the app
1) To download WhatsApp for Business, you have to the Google Play Store. The icon is the normal WhatsApp logo with a B in it.

2) It is not available for iOS users yet.

3) If you are trying to use the same number you use on the normal WhatsApp for WhatsApp for Business, please take note from this point.

4) You can sync both apps and all your contacts from the normal app will go on WhatsApp for Business. However, you won’t be able to access the normal app anymore if you use the same phone number.

5) Syncing moves your messages and contacts to WhatsApp for Business.

6) On WhatsApp for Business, once you set your business name, it can’t be changed.

7) Once you sync messages, you won’t be able to access old and starred messages IF YOU DON’T BACK UP. So make sure you back up before syncing if you intend to use the same phone number.

cool And if you don’t sync in the beginning when you are prompted to, the warning message says you will never be able to do that.

9) WhatsApp for Business has a business setting feature. This has location of business using google map, website, phone number, email address, office hours etc

10) WhatsApp for Business has the label feature. With this, you can easy label new orders, paying customers, pending payments, paid and complete orders. You can also create your own labels.

11) It has messaging tools. You can set automated messages to be sent to your customers when you are not available. These messaging comes in three categories: Away message, Greeting message and Quick reply. But for them to receive it, your phone must have internet connection. Think of it as an auto responder.

12) It also has statistics feature. You can see analytics for messages sent, messages received, messages read and messages delivered.

13) WhatsApp for Business comes with status privacy.

14) So initially I didn’t back up before moving to WhatsApp for Business. On getting there, I realised that my starred and old messages didn’t move as well. So, I went back to the old one and verified my number again and my messages were intact. So my WhatsApp for Business is on now with a different number on the same device. The apps work independently on one device as long as they are different numbers.

This is the best time to boost your business and take it globally with Whatsapp for Business.

BusinessHow To Rescue Your Online Business by verticalngn(op): 10:45pm On Jan 31, 2018
When talking about online business, there is no doubt about it that it is the gold rush mode of doing business conveniently with less cost of setting up to marketing and to reaching desired customers. Using online tools and social medias, any business can achieve desired results.

But alas, many online business owners treat their customers and clients like shit which they cannot do if they are to see face to face. The following are what you should try to work on if you really want to succeed in your online business

Treat your customers as humans

Many online business owners assumed the person they are dealing with in the other side is not a human may be they think they are robot that has no feelings. Your online business will only thrive if you only accept the fact that the people you are dealing with are human beings and they have their choices and say. I have dealt with many online business owners and the results have been discouraging. Engaging in lots of lies, non charlatan attitudes, money money money. These are what some people do online to kill the online business.
Instant response to requests

Like the case of offline business, you must always be at your business stand to attend to your customers. The same way you should do with your online business. No client will wait for an instant message that is not instantly answered by the business owner. Not that instant response is only good but it is a better way of giving your business confidence to be dealt with. I will always patronize a business I send chat to and immediately reply.

Your reputation is very important

You see, many business owners do what they like on the internet. Sending broadcast with your brand name and at the end of the day you disappoint a client. The problem there is not the disappointment but your brand. Don’t forget, the internet is a community and it is always linked together. A client can lead to another and your brand reputation is at stake.

Avoid the mindset of getting rich quick

Of course, you can make a solid living in online business if you know what you are doing. Online business assures good return but never admit to be a billionaire overnight. It takes dedication, commitment, passion and all seriousness to make it online. Many started online business but couldn’t go far because of this getting rich quick mindset.

See the Internet as a market

Like the traditional market, if you don’t display your product, put out a sign post or banners, print handbills, word of mouth etc, your customers will not come. The same way the internet, if you don’t advertise your product or service, you consume them yourself. Internet is a market of people not in the same location, so use the same internet to locate them. Use social medias, advertisement agencies etc to get your products and services across to your clients.

Integrity is gold

In the traditional market, clients see what they are buying or know where your office is located but in the case of online business, your integrity wins customers. When you say yes, let the customer from the other side know it and accept it confidently as yes. One thing that spoil online business fast is the business owner without integrity.

BusinessRe: Why Paddy Adenuga's Bid To Acquire Chevron Failed by verticalngn(op): 8:34pm On Jan 31, 2018
texazzpete:
OP just posted what Paddy himself said in the epistle...zero effort to add his own unique take on things.
Hope you read the article
BusinessWhy Paddy Adenuga's Bid To Acquire Chevron Failed by verticalngn(op): 6:25am On Jan 31, 2018
The story is everywhere on the internet how Paddy Adenuga, the son of Nigeria’s telecoms and oil & gas business mogul where he nearly and almost bought Chevron, Netherlands.

He got guts, passionate, ambitious and he was ready to go to the moon even without a ride. He played the chess and played it well in the traditional ways.

Well, the story has been told, there is history and name made by Paddy already but we can’t shy away from the fact that the acquisition was not successful. He failed! What guts he got and why he failed?

EGO KILLED HIM

Paddy said “I pitched Catalan to Edgar and how if we pulled this off it would be the grandest of coups. Edgar was highly intrigued but stated that he wanted hard cash upfront from the onset. Whilst the others were all too eager to come on board and make their money via sweat equity or cash incentives when we had a target company in our sights, Edgar wanted to be paid money and a substantial amount before putting pen to paper. I was confused by his behaviour. I told him who the others were that were on Catalan’s advisory board but he wasn’t having it, either he would be paid his princely sum to attach his name to Catalan or no deal. I was 29 at the time and was still head-strong and prideful. How could this guy develop such an attitude? I thought we were friends. I suppose Edgar knew his value and wasn’t going to mortgage it on a promise of monies at a later date. As much as he liked my Trojan Horse idea, he just happened to like money more. I balked at his request in annoyance. I paid for lunch, told him no way, and stormed off home. This was a big mistake on my part that would rear its ugly head later.”

Edgar who is a professional that has lot of experience and the connections to pull through the Chevron acquisition to Catalan which Paddy also testified to backed out from joining the Catalan Bid team because Paddy was arrogantly couldn’t accept or negotiate his interest but he thought Edgar liked money. He admitted it was a big mistake from his own part not accepting or negotiating with Edgar because that was the beginning of his failure and before he realized, it was too late.

Paddy said “I had to reach out to Edgar and I’d also have to pay that princely sum of his. I met with Edgar for a steak dinner. I swallowed my pride and apologised profusely for our last meeting that didn’t go so well. I told Edgar that I wanted him on my team now on a full-time basis. Edgar knew he was needed now more than ever and cheekily asked for twice the amount he had originally requested for. This was no longer a princely sum but a king’s ransom. I did the math. It was worth it. I called my Bankers and made sure Edgar was paid. After everything failed, Edgar later told me that if I had brought him on from day one, the first question he would have asked me was, “What amount are you willing to pay for Chevron Netherlands, given what you wanted to use it for in Africa?” I told Edgar that the price I would have paid was USD 50 million. I should have paid Edgar his princely sum the first-time round, never again would I let ego or pride cloud my judgement.”

He had to pay doubled for Edgar and still did not win the bid. That is was the consequence of his ego and pride. In business, ego and pride don’t have place instead negotiate.

HE HELD IT TOO SECRETLY

” That night I went on a dinner date and bumped into an older friend of mine, Remi. I had always looked up to Remi. Remi is smart, successful, and highly intelligent. I felt like him and I were very much the same person and that he was me, just twenty or so years down the road. Remi asked me what I was up to with work and why I wasn’t in Lagos running the family business. I coyly changed topics as I didn’t want any Nigerians knowing what I was up to, certainly no one in “high society” or the political elite. Even though Remi was a great guy, I couldn’t take the risk. Chevron Netherlands was my Trojan Horse and it was on a strictly need to know basis. We will get back to Remi later.”

After everything failed, the Managing Director of Petrogas of Oman, the mystery company Paddy used most of later time to search that has the highest bidding and that acquired the Chevron company happens to be a close friend of Remi.

Paddy said “I called Remi and told him that I was back in Lagos. He invited me over to his palatial and modern home. He liked my Lion’s head insignia that I had stitched onto the pocket of my native Nigerian kaftan. We sat down for hours and talked business and politics. Then Remi asked me what was I doing in London all that time, away from the family business. I was happy to tell him about Chevron Netherlands at this point, the deal was done and over. Remi looked at me in astonishment, “You mean you took on a whole Chevron, with no noise, no fanfare and none of us knew? Ahh bros you try!” We laughed it off. Remi then revealed the biggest bombshell of my Chevron Netherlands adventure. The managing director of Petrogas of Oman was a close friend of his and he knew he was bidding for Chevron Netherlands at the time. If I had told him what I was up to when we saw in London, whilst I was searching for the last bidder, he would have introduced us. I was blown away. There it was that whole time. That mystery last bidder that I had searched so hard for was there for my taking and it passed right by me.”

Whooo! What would have happened if he told Remi and Remi speak with his friend at Petrogas of Oman would have be.. Instead of the Joint Venture he had with ONE and EBN, it should have be with Petrogas of Oman or he just play his chess in anyway anyway.

HIS TEAM DID’NT BELIEVE HIS INSTINCTS

This is very dangerous for any business when your team don’t believe your belief or instincts. Did he have a bad team? No but they simply can’t believe his lame ideas because they are professionals.

Paddy said “I countered that we needed to be aggressive and should take the entire abandex and offer cash of USD 50 million so that we could acquire Chevron Netherlands uncontested and plough quickly to our Africa strategy.

The Catalan management team thought I was crazy. Surely, I was 29 and now undeniably stupid. How could I look at that enormity of an abandex amount and now want to offer hard-earned cash on top of that? They believed I was frequenting my local bar too often and having one too many drinks. They pleaded with me that I follow their proposal. We argued further and eventually as a compromise, we agreed that we would take all of Chevron Netherlands oil & gas abandex but would still offer a notional $1 bid price. In my heart of hearts, I felt that a cash offer was needed to win but my management team, for which I had paid a respectable amount for their services, had convinced me otherwise. They were professionals I thought and they had my best interest at heart. The team printed out the documents for which I appended my signature and re-submitted.”

The same strategy his team rejected was the same strategy Petrogas of Oman the winner used.

Paddy said “Richard Kent sent me an email; Chevron Netherlands had been sold to Petrogas of Oman. The last bidder, the mystery company I couldn’t find. I’d later come to find out that USD 50 million plus an absorption of all the abandex was the winning formula for the bid – the same formula that I had proposed to my management team but they had pushed back on. This was a painful lesson to always trust my instincts, no matter the circumstance”

This is a big lesson to entrepreneurs that despite being ambitious, there should be a clear instincts to follow, people to tell even the fact he did not tell his father or any of his family friends that can help contributed to the failire and pride has no place in business of course, pride goes before destruction.

BusinessBusiness Opportunity In Ibadan By Painting Micra Taxi Cars by verticalngn(op): 5:35am On Sep 15, 2017
It was a hot morning for me because I was to deliver a hot presentation to a team of intellectuals, so I was not even at alert but my business mind was wide opened. I saw Micra (Taxi) drivers running up and down towards one direction but I was not too curious until I could not get Taxi to take me to where I was going and my curiosity began.

I asked one of the passerby why the drivers were running up and down and I was told the Government of Oyo State has mandated all the commercial drivers to paint their cars with the Oyo State colour.

Whao! Forgetting my unseen hot seat, I started asking questions:

How much is this painting of a car thing? I was told the minimum price of painting one small Micra car is N18,000.

Really? The man responded, yes! Even some people are painting N20,000 and the price can be higher depending on the newness or rugged the car is.

Immediately, I rushed to my guy selling paints and I told him is the painting using for cars available? He said yes. Do you have colors for Oyo state? He said yes.

I rushed to stationery store, bought marker and find a open space and I wrote PAINT YOUR MICRA HERE WITH OYO STATE COLOUR.

I liaised with my guy selling paints and we look for a painter that can do the painting and the rest is a story.

THE OPPORTUNITY:
If you are in Ibadan or within Oyo State and you are interested, just find a open space and do what I did. Just tell one Micra driver what you offer, subsidize for the first person and see the magic.

It all happened and before I knew it, I was already on the hot seat.

BusinessRules Of Focus In Business by verticalngn(op): 8:57am On Apr 25, 2017
Focus is the ability to give absolute attention to something. It is giving your concentration of energy, and/or other resources to your business endeavors. Focus requires being 'single eyed.'

The effect of energy – whatever form of it – is felt most when it is focused. For instance, the solar energy of the sun doesn’t hurt too much as it would if by means of converging lens it is focused at an object – it could set things up in flame. Water if focused and properly channeled, it could erode rock, and even cut through metals. The point here is that a lot of things carry great ability but can never be harnessed except properly focused and channeled.

It takes a great deal of energy to get something going, especially at the beginning. It likewise takes a lot of energy to create a change. So, focus helps you to achieve this. Relating this to business, undertaking three or more businesses at once may sound safer – in case one fails the other would be spared – right? But in reality, you are short changing yourself because soon enough, you may lose all of it – that’s if it hasn’t happened yet.

Can you imagine when the rocket is launched? ALL launchers are focused in ONE direction. Otherwise, it will crash! Likewise in your own business! It’s common these days to see people go into one business then another. Three months ago they told you they were into catering; today they are ‘champions’ in bead making. Later on they tell you they are into fashion design…and so on. Jack of all trade, master of none! This inconsistency make people take them unlikely. Besides, people prefer to be served by the masters. If you do not focus to perfect your craft, be the top in the game, why would you expect to succeed as much!

While the world richest diversify and hold several portfolios, they do so only when they are rich. And not get rich by being diversified! You do not get rich by being diversified; you get rich and successful in business by being focused, laser focused. Find out among the richest, they started out in one arena and after they got successful there, they went on to other things. Besides, they also hire professionals who focus on running their companies.

Multiple streams of income works; but for later – focus. Multi-tasking can work only for short term but it will not work in the long term. If you try to do many things all at the same time, you will spread yourself too thin and end up with nothing. It’s hard to chase two rabbit at once. You risk losing both and even hurting yourself in the process. Same is true with business.

Are you in business? Mind your own business! Focus on it! Are you struggling with multiple businesses? Get streamlined and focus. The more dispersed you are, the more easily dissipated you get. You run out fast on energy, time, enthusiasm, creativity, and more.

Of course, a very few may be able to joggle a lot of things well, but not most of us - and in fact, not for long. The arch enemy of focus is distraction: deal with it!

While I emphasis focus, at times, you may have to combine your job with business on the side in order to stay afloat – and that’s ok. Whatever you can do to stay afloat, do it. But as soon as possible, once you get your business going, focus on it and cut down on others. Remember, at no time should you ever cut away earning income.

In being focused lies your success in life, career and business. Stay focused.
