Around 36,000 units of blood were donated to the New York Blood Center in the days after September 11—36,000 donations of 450 milliliters each—as New Yorkers, desperate to do something, encouraged by newscasters and community leaders, and gratified to make some sacrifice, rushed to local blood banks. It wasn’t just New York: There was a two-hour line at a Red Cross office in Madison, Wisconsin, and, in Gaza, Yasser Arafat was photographed waiting to give blood intended for the victims of the attacks, as was nearly every member of Congress in Washington. None of that blood was used, of course. By the time of the congressional blood drive, there were no survivors in need. The country’s blood banks collected close to 600,000 more units in the fall of 2001 than they would have without the prompt of the attacks. But blood cannot be used more than a few weeks after donation, and more than 200,000 of the 9/11 units were simply discarded. http://nymag.com/news/9-11/10th-anniversary/blood-donations/

It was difficult to ignore. Almost 9 out of every 10 times I logged into Facebook, there it was staring me in the face. This incredibly persistent Facebook ad by Paylater: paylater-adNo paperwork and I get the loan money instantly? Now that seems interesting. I figured I’d give it a shot so I pointed my smartphone browser to Paylater.ng. Requesting a loan The presentation on the landing page is simple and direct. You can drag left or right to indicate how much you want to borrow and how long you want it for. You can see much you’ll have to pay back in real time. Interest is charged at a daily rate of 1% which means that if you borrow ₦10,000 you’ll have to pay back ₦11,500, in 15 days, or ₦13,000 in 30 days. paylater-loan-range Once you make up your mind on how much you want to borrow, you can click on the “Apply for Loan” button. After forcing you to login via Facebook, they ask you a couple of questions. Regular stuff like your age, occupation, living habits and income level. There’s about 3 pages of questions, all of them brief and not necessarily annoying. They also ask for your account number and BVN Almost magical If you could just manage to scale through the series of questions, you get to experience the fun part; Paylater intelligently determines if you are eligible for a loan and credits your account instantly. paylater-loan-amount Well, kinda instantly; you should receive an alert within 24 hours. I got mine in less than 12 hours. No human interaction whatsoever, and true the claims, no paperwork per se. But why BVN? You’re probably wondering why anyone would require your BVN to grant you a loan. The Paylater.ng FAQ page explains that it enables them “verify that the individual applying for a Paylater loan is the same as the owner of the provided bank account.” That makes a lot of sense. If they are going to be granting out automatic loans, they want to be sure that the details being entered on their site are the same as the account they are paying to. That’s pretty much all they can do with your BVN — verify your details. Your BVN details cannot be compromised without your biometric data. Paying back loans Paying back loans works exactly like receiving loans. On the due date, Paylater.ng automatically debits your account by the amount you owe. You can probably see now why it was necessary to ask all those seemingly annoying questions like “how much do you earn?” and “do you have kids”. Apparently, Paylater has an algorithm programmed to guess, to some high level of accuracy, whether or not you have the means to pay back the loan when due. It’s a risk they are willing to take. paylater-loan-days If you are not comfortable with computers poking into your account, you can choose to pay back manually with your debit card anytime before the due date. Bear in mind however that you don’t get any discount on the remaining days left for the loan. But what happens if Paylater doesn’t meet any money in your account or you can’t payback before the due date? Well you risk suspension of your account, a bad rating among other credit bureaus and ‘possible legal action’ (for just ₦10,000? Yikes!). The bright side is that if you pay your loan on time, you become eligible to borrow more than the initial ₦10,000 limit for subsequent loans. The Verdict So far for me, the Paylater experience is not half bad. I love the fact that all you need to borrow money is an internet-enabled phone, a Facebook and a bank account. I have only about 5 days before my loan is due. I’m waiting to see how effectively Paylater will be able to poke into my account to deduct the ₦11,500 I owe. Oh, and I tried to see if I could get another loan while I already have one active. I hit a brick wall: Nicely played Paylater. Have you borrowed money using Paylater? Please share your experience in the comments section below. Muyiwa Matuluko

Sergey Mavrodi, founder of MMM, has written an open letter to the Nigerian government to justify the importance of the popular Ponzi scheme. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the letter was displayed on the page of all participants of the scheme. Mavrodi warned the federal government that if the Ponzi scheme collapses, millions of Nigerians will suffer, noting that “MMM is their only means of livelihood”. He stated that the money being made from the scheme was being redistributed among Nigerians as a way of “restoring social justice”. The letter reads in part: “So far MMM has come under a constant attack from you. In this regard, I would like to ask you a few simple questions. Since you are concerned with the interests of millions of your fellow citizens, I hope that you would be so kind to answer them. “What are you trying to get? Do you want the MMM System to collapse and millions of people to suffer? Who will support them then if now MMM is their only means of livelihood? Will you? You even don’t pay wages to people? Or might you not care about them? Might you be using a trendy topic to make a good name for yourselves? What will you say to a mother who will have no money to buy food for her child? Will you let her child die for the sake of the higher interests of the economy? “You say that MMM is a scam. What is the scam here, if all members are warned in advance about all the risks, the possible and impossible ones? They know there are no investments at all. The warning is a red text on a yellow background placed on most prominent place of the website. “You say that MMM is bad. Why? Yes, it produces nothing, but nothing gets out of the country either. The money is just redistributed among the citizens of Nigeria. It gets from those who are richer to poorer ones, in this way restoring social justice. What’s wrong with that? “You have repeatedly stated that “it should be investigated!.. researched!..” It means you know nothing about this System yet; you even haven’t understood how it works. “And finally. If you know what is right for people, why is the life so bad in the country?” He further noted that the MMM “has been working in Nigeria for a year, and according to your estimates, the total number of members now is about 3 million people”. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) have previously warned Nigerians against participating in the scheme while the house of representatives also ordered an investigation into the operation of the scheme, in October. In 2007, a Russian court convicted Mavrodi, a former deputy of the State Duma, of defrauding 10,000 investors of 110 million rubles ($4.3 million). He founded MMM in 1989 but he then disappeared after he declared it bankrupt on December 22, 1997. He was on the run until his arrest in 2003. @thecableng

Recently, a very important piece of information emerged about our use of modern technology. We at Bright Side think everyone has a right to know about this, so we’ve decided to share it with you. Do you remember that moment in the movie Minority Report when Tom Cruise is on the run, but he’s unable to avoid being detected because everywhere he goes there are constant retina scans feeding his location back to a central database? Well, it turns out Google has been developing something similar. Yes, that’s right — the company has been tracking smartphone users everywhere they go. It has a program that uses a red dot on a map to mark where a person is and where they’ve been, which in turn makes it much easier to identify any one individual should someone wish to do so. © anonews.co Don’t believe us? Well, there’s even a way to track yourself if you’re not convinced. Just log in to the same Google account you use on your smartphone and follow this link. You’ll be able to see the records of everywhere you’ve been from day one of the current month. Even more incredibly, no matter which privacy settings you select, your information is still being collected and stored somewhere by Google. The good news is that you can minimize the extent to which you’re tracked by adhering to the procedure below. Just follow the steps. Remember to share this information with your friends, families, and anybody you know! How to disable Google’s tracking and erase your past history To check whether location history is enabled on your account, go to the Google Maps Location History page and click the gear-shaped icon button to access your History settings. You can disable or enable the service there. Disabling your location history, however, does not remove your past history. If you would like to erase the locations Google Maps has stored for the past 30 days, first go back to the Location History page. The default time period shows your location history for the current day, so you may not see any plots on the map. Use the pull-down menu below the calendar on the left to show your history for up to 30 days. If you choose a time period during which Google Maps tracked your location, you’ll see all the points where you’ve been on the map. Below the calendar, you’ll see the option to delete your history from the time period you have chosen or to delete all of your history. Lagos - Nigerian gay activist, Bisi Alimi, who recently got married to his Scottish lover might just be planning to contest the west Africa country's 2019 elections. Alimi posted a tweet over the weekend in which he said that he had finally decided to throw his "hat into Nigerian politics". "After much thinking for over 2yrs, I have decided to throw my hat into Nigeria politics. In what capacity? Will declare later," he tweeted. See his tweet below. If he lives up to his word, Alimi would be the first openly gay man to go into Nigerian politics. Reports last year indicated that Alimi was assaulted and persecuted before he fled into exile, all because he was gay. It was reported at the time that he spoke about his travails to persuade British legislators to engage Nigerian policy makers about a law that made even befriending a homosexual a crime punishable by 10 years in jail. Nigeria signed a law in 2014 which made it illegal for gay people to even hold a meeting. The Same Sex Marriage Prohibition Act also criminalised clubs, associations and organisations, with penalties of up to 14 years in jail. The act drew international condemnation from countries such as the United States and Britain. After much thinking for over 2yrs, I have decided to throw my hat into Nigeria politics. In what capacity? Will declare later— Bisi Alimi (@bisialimi) November 19, 2016 |

An ex-homosexual, Emmanuel Stephens, has narrated his ugly ordeal when he was gay. The graduate of Theatre Arts, University of Calabar, Crosss Rivers State, shared his tale with New Telegraph in a bid to discourage intending gays. According to him, the act has made him stitch his anus thrice and it was the worse experience ever. He said, “I had my anus sutured three times while I was practicing homosexualism. That was the price I had to pay for such ignorance. The first suture was in South Africa. There, it wasn’t a problem because people don’t give a damn but coming back to Nigeria was a clash of culture and my religion. “I went to South Africa in search of greener pastures, but fell in the hands of late Johnson, a gay, whom I served for four and quarter years. “I was forced into the ‘fraternity’ (homosexualism) and when I got back to Nigeria and met a particular doctor for the second round of anus suture; I knew my time was up, following the doctor’s counseling. “So, when I came back to Abuja, I continued the practice until I met a Christian doctor, who was supposed to suture my torn anus. The doctor had done it once and the second time, he had to counsel me on the dangers of homosexuality and advised me to quit, which I paid no heed to. I treated him with some level of contempt but on that very day, I had an issue with my system, and he gave me an option of repentance or death. “When I was given such options, I chose life than to die and gave up the practice but it wasn’t easy at first because the doctor made me go through a psychologist and psychiatrist as a way of reforming me. After that, I had a new lease of life. “I had been wearing adult pampers to prevent the feaces that regularly oozes from the anus because the anus had widened and cannot control defecation. “Really, Satan has a way of subjecting the ignorant people into perpetual bondage. I thought I was a ‘big boy,’ spending money at will but I was dying gradually. I don’t know how I got into such. Women didn’t appeal to me then. I played the female character,” Emmanuel who has turned a new leaf stated. “I have been admiring the wealth of this man and he drives clean cars. We all sell motor parts but I didn’t know he has something else. One day, the man called me and said, ‘Victor, you want to be like me?’ I said ‘yes’. And he asked me to follow him. We entered a public toilet, he removed his pant and showed me blood stained pampers and said, ‘This is what we do for money. I blend homosexualism with drugs.’ “If you are interested, come, I will make you. When I saw and heard what he said, I opened my mouth agape and he laughed and said, ‘You don’t want to be like me. I’m not a cultist. “I have showed you what I do. I was surprised because we all pursue the same trade. This is a very clean man that drives the latest model of G-Wagon. I didn’t accept the offer because I’m married and I didn’t know how to hide it from my wife.” |
Rev. Paul Ojoh, the Resident Pastor, Shepherd House Assembly International, Jos has said that pornography and masturbation could affect the brain and impede productivity. "Those twin evils could hurt the brain and impede productivity because of the cumulative negative effects of addiction to them," he stated on Sunday in Jos, during a sermon at the Youth Conference of the Church. In the sermon titled: 'Dealing with Forces of Addiction', he noted that a high percentage of youths suffer addiction mostly to pornography and masturbation. " Research has shown that more than 50 per cent of youths are addicted to pornography, while 60 to 90 per cent of adolescent boys and 40 per cent of adolescent girls are addicted to masturbation. " These addictions are sins against nature; the right hemisphere of the brain functions in facilitating creativity and inventions and a portion of the brain called 'cingulate codex, is responsible for moral and ethical decisions. " So, when you feed your brain with masturbation and pornographic materials, it impedes your productivity and affects the efficiency of your brain which is designed to perform the task of creativity and invention," he explained. Ojoh said that the remedy to such addictions was acknowledging that addicts could not fight the battle of emancipation alone, and therefore required divine intervention to see them through. " Addicts of masturbation must admit that they cannot overcome their battles alone. They must accept that it is only possible with the divine intervention of God. "It is important you avoid anything that triggers such addictions; these are things that you see and read that pollute your mind towards it like movies, magazines and places " You must renew your mind and feed it with the word of God to fight addictive materials that have occupied the space of your mind. "Addicts should also seek counsel from people of integrity, who will counsel them and monitor them through their recovery process," he said. He said that addictions could also enslave a man, put him in bondage and regulate the lifestyle of the affected person or persons, which could subjugate potentialities. The clergy, who defined addiction as a repeated habit which becomes a lifestyle, mentioned other negative addictions to include the internet, food, sex, alcohol, amongst others. The youth conference featured comedies, drama plays and special renditions from the Choir. |
United States Presidential Election Thousand of People Prayed & Reversed US Election Prophecy – TB Joshua Coming on the results of the just concluded United States Presidential Election which were announced on Monday, Nov 7, declaring Donald Trump as the winner, negative reactions has trailed Prophet TB Joshua over his prophecy were he stated that ‘a woman will win the US Presidential election’. In a rather uncharacteristic reversal, the renowned Prophet today stated that the outcome of the election was a manifestation of the efficacy of prayers. Prophet TB Joshua insisted that people who are conversant with the accuracy of his prophecies went into fervent prayers and begged God to reverse the prophecy to favor trump. Further citing biblical reference where prayer altered a prophecy, Joshua likened Trump shock victory to the prophecy of Jonah to the people of Nineveh which said that God would destroy Nineveh within 40 days; but was eventually averted because the inhabitants of the city offered fervent prayers to God. An email was read out to the congregation during the service where the author commended TB Joshua saying: “Your word came and challenged us to pray. “Thousands of people that heard my prophecy prayed to God, they fasted and prayed that God should change the prophecy. That a prophecy is disclosed and it did not come to pass does not mean that it is not authentic.” It was like the prophecy of Jonah when God told him that he would destroy the people of Nineveh. Thank you prophet, your word saved America, it was a warning, like the prophecy of Jonah when the people prayed, and God changed His mind. Prophet, God hears your prayer. We prayed and fasted.” Confirming the power of prayer in prophetic utterances, Joshua said, “They know my antecedent that what I say always come to pass. As a result, they went to God in prayer. This is the power of prayer; it is not a crime to tell you. If you have doubt, look at the track record of the person that is talking. I said that the boat will be rocked, and there will be challenges. What else do you need? Let’s believe in the power of prayer. He added: “We have seen the outcome of the election in America. You will notice that it is all about the popular vote, the vote of the majority of Americans. In this case, we need the spirit of a prophet to recognize or to know a prophet. Our levels are different. We are not on the same level. We might have great cathedrals, huge bells and all kinds of activities that are good by human standards; but human point of view is limited.
