You did the right thing. If I were you I won't expect the money back though. Not because I don't need it back, but because lending money to friends usually sour such friendships when the other party fails to meet up with the payment.

It's easier if you just give it to them and forget about it than expecting it to be paid back. That way, both of you won't be under any pressure. If he pays back that would be a pleasant surprise.
