GOLD AND RUST

Travel › Ibadan Brown Roofs: A Matter Of Perception - updated with more photos by vicadex07(op):
The fact is other major parts of Nigeria were still living in mud and thatch houses when millions of Ibadan indigenes and residents were already using zinc roofs and later on cement buildings. Some of the earliest mud houses in the ancient city were just upgraded with zinc roofs before the owners decided to either stop at that or make a complete overhaul. With the earliest form of civilized settlement not only in Nigeria but Africa as a whole, Ibadan is a city blessed with rich cultural and historical heritage. As at Nigeria's independence, Ibadan was the largest and most populous city in the country and the third in Africa after Cairo and Johannesburg. Ibadan had been the center of administration and capital of the old Western Region, Nigeria since the days of British colonial rule hence her many firsts in accomplishments. First TV station in Africa, first University in Nigeria, first sky scrapper in Nigeria, first modern stadium in Africa, first ever glass house complex in West Africa among many other accomplishments due to early civilization.

What makes the brown roof phenomena quite alluring and exceptionally striking is the topography of the large expanse of land and the very large clusters of homogeneous settlement. Standing at a vantage point like atop its most popular hill Oke-are, of which Ibadan is noted for many more, or at the top of the bowers tower which is the highest point of the city (this is where many of the popular brown roof pictures are taken) the view of the historical city sprawls out in an alluring manner with all its splendor. You cannot just resist the aura of a feeling of deep rich history.

According to J.P Clark a very famous poet, "Ibadan is a running splash of gold and rust, flung and scattered among seven hills like broken china in the sun".

The problem with Ibadan and its negative perception is...over "scatterness" mainly because of its hilly terrain, hence why most visitors and passer-by's who are most guilty of spreading its negative stereotype never stop to take it all in.

Bodija is cut off from Challenge!

Mokola is cut off from Eleyele!!

Moniya and Akinyele is more of a voyage to Felele!!!

Now we have also Iroko, lalupon, egbeda, old lagos road, etc. The bazillions of towns around those places can actually make another state.

Venice is one of the world’s biggest tourist destinations, described as an open air museum with ancient buildings and artifacts. As old as it is, most of its ancient buildings have brown roofs but Venetians and historians have never called the city dirty because of that. So why should we call Ibadan dirty because of that too? Of all my years in this city I have always considered the brown roof as a form of art and beauty and I would love Nigerians to stop and look well. We only start appreciating ourselves when a foreigner tells our story but for once let’s tell it to them.

The brown roofs is due to years of use of the steel pan roofs and the more the rust the more the years of use and yeah, the more its beauty. I’m not saying people should not use their asbestos or stone coated step tile roofing sheets. I just really love the vintage look the roofs gives the city.

So you see, people are right when they say Ibadan has brown roofs; many of them I tell you. Ibadan has more brown roofs than anywhere in Nigeria. But do you know the bigger truth? Ibadan also has more modern houses than anywhere else in the country.

Match all the modern houses in the biggest city in all geopolitical zones across the country with those in Ibadan, when the houses in those cities finish, the remaining modern houses in Ibadan WILL still be more than those in the next two biggest cities. Fact!

To summarize this my narrative, let me quickly quip in a remix version of JP Clarks popular quote about the ancient city.

"Ibadan has more gold and more rust than anywhere else in Nigeria"

Politics › Re: Stop Demanding Political Favours From Buhari, MASSOB Tells Igbo Groups by vicadex07(m): 6:36pm On Sep 09, 2015
IGBOS ARE BORN BEGGARS grin
etibaba:
Awka- THE splinter group of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign
State of Biafra (MASSOB) has told the various Igbo groups in the country to stop
demanding political favours from President Muhammadu Buhari, arguing that no
amount of pressure would make the president change his mind in view of his alleged
dislike of the Igbo nation.
The movement’s director of information, Mr. Uchenna Madu listed the Igbo groups
that have been calling for political recognition and agitating for appointments to
include Ohaneze Ndi-Igbo, Ohaneze Youth Council, political, traditional, religious
leaders, among others.
In a statement in Awka Wednesday, Madu described Igbo people as the architect of
their political humiliation in President Buhari’s administration because of what he
termed “their individual selfishness, personal ego and lust of money.”
The statement read: “President Buhari is very right in relegating Igbo to their
current political status in Nigeria. Some Igbo political, traditional, religious, market
and youth leaders blindly bagged their egg of political and economical future in
Nigeria in a fragile, demoralized and unsteady leader called Jonathan Goodluck, who
glaringly crashed heavily with the Igbo political and economical eggs.
“President Buhari is just paying Ndi-Igbo back in their own coin as they did not
vote for him or his party, the APC because the Igbo men openly and shamefully
campaigned for Goodluck Jonathan who politically deceived them.
“As it stands, many Igbo leaders will continue to blindly wallop in Nigeria’s
political wilderness until they rediscover the courage of Ojukwu as enshrined in the
spirit of Biafra’s consciousness and the unrelenting and undeterred spirit of no
retreat, no surrender.”

General Obasanjo led a handful of Yoruba soldiers to the Ore border, then defeated and chased those biafran flattheads back to the east. That point marked the beginning of the end of the civil war.

Yorubas dont usually do interstate because we believe our region to be better than any other in Nigeria unlike some people that sees the southwest especially Lagos as their own London.

To give a few instances, there are lot of countries in south America where Yoruba culture and Language are most prominent, heck they even celebrate our festivals and revere our kings like the alaafin of Oyo for instance. What about benin republic, togo, ghana, south africa etc. In Benin republic for instance, you will find large communities of Yoruba speakers both of indegenous origins and those from Nigeria too. Even their president is of Yoruba descent. Even spain, all the way in Europe isn't left out.

Don't even let me talk about the UK scenario. Now law enforcement in Uk are trying to employ Yoruba speaking individuals in Uk cos of the sheer magnitude of Yoruba immigrants in the country. You claim Yorubas are your descendant according to your history...hahaha...laughable. How can the most minute tribe in Nigeria claim patrimony to the almighty yoruba.

Till date, the heads of your dead obas are still sent to ile ife as a tribute to the fact that we own you. You are just offsprings of a long lost brother who chose to establish his kingdom at the borders of the Yoruba empire and like most traditions in the world, a dead mans corpse is usually sent back to his indigenous community for proper burial no matter how many years he has lived in foreign lands.

Comparing the benin to the Yoruba is like comparing an ant to a giant.

According to Yoruba history, benin people are off shoots of the Yoruba race, hence the similarities in some aspects of tradition and nomenclature.

Yoruba people has existed thousands of years before the formation of the more recent benin empire you're yapping about. Our population across the world attest to that. We number in 100s of millions or even billions while your people cannot boast of at least 5% of that. So which fake empire are you talking about. There are many countries all over the world where you can find bits and strands of Yoruba culture and tradition. Even cities in south american countries like Jamaica and brazil are named after the Yoruba people. Where around the world has the benin people ever established prominence...tell me.

In nigeria politics of today, of what impact is the edo nation or better put the infamous edo empire. You all should quit yapping nonsense whenever you wanna quote history again and never compare yourself to Yoruba people...eewo. We are you big brothers.

All I see is the lamentation of a Biafran. The YorubaS do not mind sharing the VAT from Lagos with a Kano that do not allow the sale of alcohol.

The Yorubas do not have to lead the lamentation of federalism when it was a Biafra Aguiyi Ironsi that truncated confedralism to install the rule of the minority Igbo on The majority Hausa n Yoruba.

What year would Biafrans like you stop lamenting like you are God who deposited crude oil in the NigerDelta ? What is happening to the 13% derivation ? Why is Lagos not fighting for VAT control or not entitled to 13% from the revenue accruing from it's port or the VAT it generates ?

Why must you die lamenting ? If 13% derivation is not enough why not push for the increase at the federal assemblies or do you have only retard like yourselves as reps ?

What year would you learn to build bridges to achieve your aim in Nigeria instead of lamentation n war ?

Finally why are you so forsaken that you can't make use of your brain but cry victim when you are clearly the aggressor ? Who truncated federalism in Nigeria ? A Biafran

Who orchestrated the first coup de etat in Nigeria ? A Biafran.

Simply because the majority are wiser and would not allow you to orchestrate a coup or destroy our newly found democracy / federalism you have been wailing for the past 100 days.

For Godsake what is the problem with you people ? Is it that your brain is damaged or what ? There's no perfect system anywhere in the world and you Biafra should learn to perfect the federalism we are enjoying or suffering as you deem fit n not wail simply because a Nigerian is ruling Nigeria.
