Governors Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti, Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo and Babajide Sanwo-olu of Lagos will today in Port Harcourt meet their Rivers State counterpart, Nyesom Wike, PREMIUM TIMES has gathered.

The development is believed to be connected with the crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) resulting from the nomination of Atiku Abubakar as the candidate of the main opposition party for the 2023 presidential election.

The crisis worsened after Atiku rejected the recommendation of an ad hoc committee of the party and picked Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, as his running mate.

The committee was reported to have recommended Mr Wike for the position, although the party later cllaimed that Mr Wike was only one of three nominees recommended by the committee.

The three South West governors are believed to be going to Port Harcourt for the meeting with Mr Wike as emissaries of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu.

The ruling party and Mr Tinubu are believed to be trying to capitalise on the crisis in the opposition party to seek the support of Mr Wike for the forthcoming presidential poll.

When PREMIUM TIMES contacted Mr Fayemi, he confirmed that he was indeed travelling with his two fellow APC governors to the Rivers State capital.

He also confirmed that the itinerary of the delegation includes a meeting with Governor Wike.

However, he said the meeting is not connected to partisan matters.

Mr Fayemi said the visiting governors would only be paying a courtesy call on their colleague, Mr Wike, while using the opportunity to discuss issues concerning the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF).

Mr Fayemi, who is the chairperson of the NGF, said the forum is having ongoing discussions on challenges related to national security, education and the economy, saying those would form the focus of the meeting of the visiting governors with Mr Wike.

“We are going to Port Harcourt to meet members of the APC in the state but have decided to use the opportunity to pay a courtesy call on our colleague, the governor of the state,” Mr Fayemi told this newspaper.

The Rivers State governor has tacitly remained opposed to his party’s candidate, Atiku, since the former vice president announced Mr Okowa as his running mate.

Instead, he has hosted the presidential candidates of Labour Party, Peter Obi, and that of the New Nigeria People’s Party, Rabiu Kwankwaso, in Port Harcourt over the period, sparking speculations that he was looking to bale out of the PDP.

Last week, the governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, decried the treatment the PDP and Atiku had allegedly meted on Mr Wike and advised the candidate to placate the governor.

Other leaders of the party, such as the chairperson of its Board of Trustees, Walid Jibrin, and former governor of Plateau, Jonah Jang, have also issued the same advice.

But an associate of Atiku, Adamu Waziri, a former minister who said he met Mr Wike in Turkey last week. raised an objection to the party sending a delegation to placate the Rivers governor, saying as a party man, he should be available at all times to support the PDP which had given him many opportunities.

Dozens of Catholic Bishops and Archbishops from within and outside the country, including prominent individuals on Thursday attended the official consecration of Most Rev. John Bogna Bakeni as the Auxiliary Bishop of Maiduguri Catholic Diocese in Borno state.

Also in attendance was the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, and former governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi. Although he declined to speak to the press, Vanguard gathered that he was in Maiduguri purposely to grace the Ordination.


The Episcopal Ordination was also attended by Bishops of Enugu, Onitcha, Keffi, Panshin, Jalingo, Yola, Bauchi, Jos Dioceses among others.

Bakeni is a native of Shani Local Government Area and first indigenous Bishop from Borno State.

The consecration ceremony was performed by His Excellency, Most Rev. Antonio Guido Filipazz, Apostolic Nuncio to Nigeria which took place at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Maiduguri.

Performing the spiritual ceremony Most Rev Filipazz charged Bakeni to use his good offices, as a Bishop ‘’to build the body of Christ for His Church to remain in the unity together with the Order of Bishops.’’

He said, the title of Bishop is one of service, not honour, and therefore, a Bishop should strive to benefit others rather than lord it over them, adding that, such is the precept of the Master: the greater should behave as the least and the ruler as the servant.

Filipazz also urged the new Bishop to preach the word in season and out of the season; reprove with all patience and sounding teaching for the benefit of Catholic family.

He said, as the Church entrusted you (Bishop Bakeni), be faithful steward, moderator, and guardian of the mysteries of Christ our Lord, and love all whom God places in your care, especially priests and deacons, your co-workers in the ministry of Christ, but also the poor and the weak, immigrants and strangers.” Filipazz stated.

He also charged the newly consecrated Bishop to guide the holy people of God in the way of salvation as a devoted father and sustain them with the help of his fellow ministers, the priests and deacons, adding that he should equally guide the faithful by remaining the repository of faith as well as incorruptible, as handed down by the Apostles and preserved in the Church everywhere and at all times.

The Apostolic Nuncio to Nigeria, reminded the new bishop that having been admitted into the fold, he had been entrusted with the task of bearing witness to the truth of the Gospel with the ministry of the Spirit and Justice.

Responding, Bishop Bakeni thanked all the participants for attending the ceremony and urged them to continue to pray for him, adding that since the Pope graciously nominated him as an assistant, as requesteģd by His Lordship, Most Rev. Oliver Dashe Doeme of Maiduguri Diocese, he would remain loyal to Doeme and be dedicated in the Lord’s Vine yard.

Bakeni was born on 15th March, 1975 in Kiri village of Shellang Local Government Area of Adamawa state. He was ordained a Priest on 17th August, 20o2 at St Patrick’s Cathedral Maiduguri, after which, he attended various theological studies within and outside the country before his new appointment as Auxiliary Bishop on 12th April, 2022 by His Holiness, Pope Francis.

A group, the Arewa Youths Progressive Alliance, has dissociated itself from a comment credited to the presidential candidate of the New Nigerian Peoples Party, Rabiu Kwankwaso, that voters from the North would only vote for the region’s presidential candidates.

But the spokesman of the group, Alhaji Sambo Galadima, noted that “the North is neither anti-progress nor xenophobic against other Nigerians.”

In a statement released in Kaduna on Thursday, Galadima said that the impression created by the former Governor of Kano State was not only disrespectful to the region but misrepresented the true characters of an average northern voter.

Picking holes in the assertion by the NNPP presidential candidate who spoke on Channels TV, the spokesman noted that Kwankwaso’s utterances portrayed the North as retrogressive.

“Dr Rabiu Musa Kwankwanso’s utterances portray the North as retrogressive and the average northern voter as insensitive and unconcerned about the sufferings of Nigerians and the high rate of insecurity and economic woes bedevilling Nigeria, and rather concerned about having ‘fellow northerner and fellow Muslim’ perpetuate themselves in power.

“Nothing can be farther from the truth. The northerner experiences the same level of frustration with the state of governance in the country that the average Nigerian from any part of Nigeria experiences and wishes like every Nigerian that things improve for the better and that the most capable and most prepared individuals take charge of governance at different levels, including the presidency of the country, for the betterment of Nigeria,” he said.

He further argued that the North had never been immune to the various troubles bedevilling the country.

“Just because a Northerner is the President, has the North fared any better in infrastructure or living standards merely because a Northerner or a Muslim is the President of the country?

“The former governor of Kano State insults the North by portraying us as some insensitive group of people without the capacity to think for ourselves. This is not true. He sends the impression out there that our votes are owned by some elites and that it is these elites who will decide how we will vote in every election.

“If that was true in the past, that is set to change, because we are not slaves. We are capable of dreaming and holding strongly to our dreams. We are capable of working for and participating actively in political activities, independently and with the aim of bringing about the kind of government that shall serve the best interest of the average Nigerian.

“In the last seven years, more than 100,000 Northerners have been killed by bandits and terrorists, and thousands of our daughters, wives, mothers and sisters have either been raped, abducted or forcefully married out.

“Our farms are lying fallow and our harvests haven’t been poorer. Yet, a Northerner is the President. We voted for this Northerner, not because he is a Northerner, but because we believed he had the best of intentions and had the capacity to turn things around for good, for the benefit of all Nigerians. But, we are disappointed,” he stated.

Galadima then assured that the North would vote in line with what they considered the best for Nigeria at this time and in the future.

“We want to assure fellow Nigerians that Northern Nigeria is not some kind of slave colony, where some elites drag us by the neck to vote on the basis of sectionalism or religion. We shall vote for the best candidates who hold the best promise to recharge Nigeria and get her working again, because, like every responsible citizen, we want the best interest of our country and we want a brighter future for our children,” he added.

THE Labour Party, LP, will on Friday unveil Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed as the running mate to Mr. Peter Obi, the Presidential candidate of the party in the 2023 elections.

Senator Baba-Ahmed, who is in his 40s is the Proprietor of Baze University, Abuja and Baba-Ahmed University Kano.

The unveiling of the vice presidential candidate was initially slated for Thursday to be done by the LP’s Presidential candidate at the party’s national secretariate, Abuja.

However, the National Chairman of the party, Barrister Julius Abure said that the ceremony could not go ahead as planned because the Presidential candidate, who had traveled to Maiduguri and expected back in Abuja Thutsday afternoon had his flight canceled.

Abure announced that the unveiling of Mr. Obi’s running mate was rescheduled for Friday, July 8 at the party’s headquarters, Abuja.

The Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court in the United Kingdom hearing the case of alleged organ trafficking involving the former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice, was on Thursday told that the kidney donor, David Ukpo, is actually 21 years old and not a minor.

Prosecutors were said to have told the court on Friday that all the available evidence provided showed that the said donor is actually 21 years old and not 15 years old as widely reported.

Both Ekweremadu and his wife appeared in the court on Thursday and they pleaded not guilty to the charge of organ harvesting while the case has been transferred to the Central Criminal Court and adjourned till August 4.

They have also been ordered to be remanded in custody till the adjourned date.

So the case will no longer be transferred to Nigeria as it will now be heard at the Central Criminal Court.

The New Nigeria People’s Party NNPP has dismissed reports that its presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso described the Igbo and Labour Party Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi as incapable of winning elections, noting that the report was “falsely credited” to Kwankwaso.

According to the report, Kwankwaso, while inaugurating the Party’s Gombe State Executive last week, was quoted to have said that the South East (Igbo People) are good in business but at the bottom of politics in Nigeria.

“The said attribution is said to have generated some ill feelings in some political circles in Nigeria, especially between the South East and the NNPP”, said Prof. Rufa’i Ahmed Alkali National Chairman of the NNPP.

He said as a party that is desirous of changing the situation of the country, NNPP believes that no Nigerian of any geopolitical zone, tribe, ethnic nationality, or religious persuasion is least on the rung of the ladder in the whole effort to bring the desired change in the country.

Alkali said; “The NNPP wishes to categorically state that the statement of its Presidential Candidate, Senator Kwankwaso at the occasion was situated out of contest, as the NNPP Presidential candidate has always emphasized that the Igbos were frontrunners in the fight for the nation’s struggle for independence, and had produced the first President of the country in the person of late Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, the first President of the Senate, Dr. Nwafor Orizu, former Vice President, late Dr. Alex Ekwueme, four former Presidents of the Senate from 1999 to date and other top political office holders.

“NNPP as a political party on the ballot in 2023 believes that it has what it takes like some other political parties to rejuvenate the present situation of the country and will not in any way disparage any zone or people of any political party.

A community leader from the Birnin Gwari Emirate Council in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State, Alhaji Zubairu Abdulra’uf, has lamented how members of the communities paid N400m to bandits to enable them to go to their farms.

This is just as he said the people of the emirate had resorted to defending themselves against terrorists that had over the years taken over the area.

He told journalists in Kaduna on Thursday that the constant attacks on communities had paralysed economic activities in their rural areas and made travelling in the area impossible.

On payment to bandits, Abdulra’uf on the state owned radio – the Kaduna State Media Corporation, said “Yes, N200m was paid to bandits in Randegi district alone.

“When you talk of Birnin-Gwari Local Government as a whole, it’s between N300m to N400m paid to these bandits.

“There are three stages of paying these types of taxes to these bandits. You have to pay pre-season and mid-season when the crops are about to start yielding. You will pay these bandits because they will not allow you to have access to your farm. Then, at the end of the season when you are harvesting, you will give these bandits money before you access your farm.

“And when you access your farm after paying these taxes, they will now tell you that apart from giving them money, you will give a ratio of two bags to 10 bags of all the assorted grains.”

He added, “For the past three years, this is what the Birnin-Gwari people have been enduring and we are now in a state of hopelessness and frustration.

“When people are frustrated, they will now look for the best option for themselves which is to arm themselves if the government cannot protect them.”

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, on Tuesday, dismissed a fresh application the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, filed to be released on bail, pending the determination of the treasonable felony charge the Federal Government preferred against him.

Kanu, who is currently facing a seven-count charge, had in the application he filed through his team of lawyers led by Chief Mike Ozekhome, SAN, equally challenge the revocation of the bail the court earlier granted to him.

He specifically urged the court to set aside the order it made on March 28, 2019, which not only issued a bench warrant for his arrest, but also gave FG the nod to try him in absentia.

The IPOB leader told the court that contrary to FG’s allegation that he jumped bail, he said that he fled for his life after his home town at Afaraukwu Ibeku in Umuahia, Abia State, was invaded by soldiers, which he said led to the death of 28 persons.

Contending that he was denied fair hearing before his bail was revoked, Kanu, attached eight exhibits that included photographs, as well as an affidavit he deposed to from Isreal after he fled from the country.

Meanwhile, dismissing the bail request on Tuesday, trial Justice Binta Nyako, said she was not satisfied with the reason the IPOB leader gave for his failure to appear in court for continuation of his trial.

The trial judge noted that frok records of the court, Kanu, was represented by his lawyer on the day his bail was revoked, likewise his sureties.

“In fact, he sureties told the court that they did not know the whereabout of the Defendant and even applied to be discharged from the matter.

“Therefore, the Defendant was not denied fair hearing”.

Besides, Justices Nyako held that though a court could vacate a previous order when confronted with a cogent and verifiable reason, “in the instant case, I have not been given any, neither have I been given any reason to set-aside the order.

“The present application amounts to an abuse of court process for attempting to relitigate an issue already decided by the court.

“If the Defendant is dissatisfaction, he has the Appeal Court to go to.

“This application is accordingly dismissed”, Justice Nyako held.

It will be recalled that the court had also on March 18, declined to release the embattled IPOB leader on bail.

The court maintained that Kanu must explain the reason why he breached the previous bail that was given to him, before he could enjoy another favourable discretion from it.

“Until the issue of the absence of the defendant for his trial, with all the bail conditions breached, is determined, the instant application of the defendant for bail will at best be premature and it is refused.

“However, the defendant is at liberty to re-file the application”, Justice Nyako added.

The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Laing, has said the English proficiency test imposed on many seekers of academic and other types of opportunities in the United Kingdom (UK) confers more advantage on Nigerians than citizens of other nations required to take such tests.

Ms Laing, who spoke in an exclusive interview with PREMIUM TIMES, noted that records have shown that Nigerians do well in the tests.

“…As far as I am concerned, it is actually an asset and an advantage to Nigerians compared to many others,” she said.

Ms Laing added that she does not think that the test constitutes any problem for Nigerians, saying they “actually do well in the English proficiency test.”

“So, it is actually an advantage for Nigerians who can pass much more easily than a lot of other people can,” she added.

Controversy
Nigerians have recently debated whether Nigerians should take the English proficiency tests, particularly the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) required for migration to many countries in the global north including the UK.

A key argument by groups advocating against the test is that Nigeria as a former British colony and Engish-speaking country should not be required to take it.

The price of the test has also been described as a ripoff.

The cost of the test, which currently stands between N80,000 and N90,000 in Nigeria, is almost three times the country’s minimum wage of N30,000.

The British High Commission in Nigeria had earlier in the year told this newspaper that individual test providers were responsible for fixing test prices. It, however, added that “UK Visas and Immigration stipulate that the fees the providers charge our customers must be comparable to the fees they charge others for the same or similar English language tests.”

Apart from its high cost, the test is only valid for two years and can only be taken in 12 cities across the country.

Clarifications
The Home Office, however, earlier explained that Bachelor’s Degree holders or its equivalent will not need to take a Secure English Language Test (SELT) if it is verified by UK Ecctis and that the degrees “meet, or exceed the recognised standard of a UK bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate degrees”.

According to Ms Laing, “English is the official language of many countries around the world but we have to set a clear uniform standard. It is standard practice across the globe so we could not give particular special treatment to anyone.”

However, in 2020, the UK Home office, which is said to be primarily in charge of the test, told the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) that it did not have evidence that the majority of Nigerians speak English as a first language.

“We do not have the required evidence that shows the majority of people in Nigeria speak English as their first language,” it wrote in a reply to the BBC’s enquiry.

It added: “We must have evidence that at least 51 per cent of the population speaks English as a first language for a country to be included in the Majority English Speaking Country list.”

Nigerians, others kick
A Nigerian youth group, Policy Shapers, initiated an online petition on Change.org, asking why none of the over 20 anglophone countries in Africa is on the list of countries exempted from taking the test.

Nigerians are not alone as other former British colonies are also asking for an exemption. Citizens of Ghana, Cameroon and Malawi have consistently made similar calls.

Ghana’s second deputy speaker of parliament, Andrew Asiamah, in February, mandated the parliament’s Education and Foreign Affairs Committee to look into the IELTS policy as it relates to Ghanaians.

His directive was a sequel to a statement by a fellow lawmaker, who expressed the view that the test was being used as a source of revenue for the UK government.

The lawmakers, like Nigerians, had argued that Ghana is a Commonwealth nation and English is the official language of the state and the language of instruction in Ghanaian Schools.

Meanwhile, in Malawi, over 7,300 Malawians signed a petition asking the UK government to exempt them from taking the test before they can be accepted for studies in the UK.

Meanwhile, some countries such as Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Ireland, and Jamaica are exempted from taking such tests.

Other countries exempted include Malta, New Zealand, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, United States of America and Canada.

President-General of the Council, Aare Omoluabi Oladotun Hassan, who disclosed this at a briefing in Abuja, said the Council was reliably informed of the plot to repeat the political treatment meted out on Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Chief MKO Abiola to pave way for the emergence of Atiku Abubakar of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as president in 2023.

According to him, the decision to resort to pursuing Tinubu’s disqualification through the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, was taken after some Northern power brokers realised the futility of their attempt to impose Senator Ahmed Lawan as the APC presidential candidate.

Aare Omoluabi also claimed that there was a plan to launch a media war of calumny against Tinubu over his missing academic certificates, but warned that the Council would not tolerate what it described as ‘premeditated treachery’ against the former governor of Lagos State.

He said: “We warn against the ensuing and deadly political card by the Northern supremacist and sectional interests, specifically targeted at forcing Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the presidential candidate of All Progressives Congress, APC, out of the way in order to pave way for a Northern presidential candidate of another political party.

“We are fully inundated with details of their deceitful and clandestine operations to desperately and forcibly bring in through the back door Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the PDP and back him to emerge as president in 2023.

“The Yoruba Council Worldwide wishes to inform that we shall not tolerate any clandestine motive to repeat the evil machinations meted out on Obafemi Awolowo and MKO Abiola, both of whom were politically wrecked by the power thirsty Northern supremacists who are hell-bent on retaining power in the North under any political party divide.

“While warning alleged ethnic chauvinist from the North to desist from playing any card that wouldturn the Nigerian state into a Northern courtyard, the organisation expressed confidence that Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu would provide solutions to Nigeria’s plethora of problems.“
