The Ekiti APC also said that Mrs Jonathan and the State Governor, Ayo Fayose only entertained their supporters during a March 16 rally in the state. https://static.pulse.ng/img/incoming/crop3568652/6612785247-chorizontal-w644/Dame-Patience-Jonathan.jpg The Ekiti State Branch of the All Progressives Congress(APC) has described First lady, Patience Jonathan as a comedian. The Ekiti APC also said that Mrs Jonathan and the State Governor, Ayo Fayose only entertained their supporters during a March 16 rally in the state. The party made the comments via a statement released on Tuesday, March 17, by its Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatubosun. The statement reads: “Throughout her speech, she manifested an image of a village masquerade providing a momentary comic relief to a poverty ravaged community not in a hurry for socio-economic salvation.” “You would have thought that the First Lady would list her husband’s achievements in Ekiti State and then give the people some hope that her husband would build upon those achievements.” “But she engaged in a duet with her host and soul mate, Governor Ayo Fayose, in an empty campaign comedy to a thoroughly dazed enlightened Ekiti people. It was a perfect duet by two comedians that one does not need any counsel that Nigeria must be rescued from the captivity of the costumed ‘people of power’ without responsibility.” “She was consistently painting Buhari as a man that would herd Nigerians into jail without committing any crime whereas Buhari only insisted that criminals during his coming administration would go to jail. She said she was not ready to prepare food for Fayose in jail. Inadvertently, Mrs. Jonathan was telling Nigerians that Fayose is a candidate for the prison if Buhari wins.” “Mrs. Jonathan only came to Ekiti to entertain in a political theatre full of deceits and false props constructed by Fayose for maximum personal profits. The First Lady also described the APC as poison during the rally and urged her supporters not to vote for the party. http://naijafussion..com/2015/03/first-lady-is-comedian-ekiti-apc-says.html |

Most entertainers have been having fun with President Goodluck Jonathan in recent times and earlier in the week, the President was in Lagos and hanged out with some of these celebrities. Singer, Seyi Shay was among the entertainers and the pretty diva ‘broke’ the internet with the dress she wore to meet the president at the event. https://punch.cdn.ng/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/Seyi-Shay-and-President-Goodluck-Jonathan--360x263.jpg The picture where the singer, wearing an incredibly short dress, while sitting beside the president, went viral and so many fans and foes have expressed their feelings concerning Seyi’s outfit. Many people, including celebrities and notable figures such as comedian Wale Gates; social analyst, Omojuwa, took to their social media accounts to express their feelings over her choice of outfit. However, when Saturday Beats contacted the singer, she explained that she had two outfits for the event and the outfit that caused the stir was what she wore to perform. She emphasised that she is a respectable lady and was not planning to seduce the president in any way. “I am a very respectable young lady and I was not in any way trying to seduce the President with the outfit I wore. I had two outfits for the event, one was for my performance and the other was worn after I performed. The dress I was pictured in with the President was what I wore during my performance. “I came on stage and greeted everyone according to their culture and I did the same for Mr. President. He was impressed and he asked where and how I knew how to greet in his native dialect and I said I learnt it. That was what brought about the giggling and smiles in the picture. I’m a performer and what I do on stage doesn’t reflect my everyday life. I had two outfits on that day and it was a youth event. Who wouldn’t feel overwhelmed meeting the President? Well, I did and I felt honoured because it is not every day you get to meet the president of your country,” she said. Seyi said her fans should expect her much anticipated album at the last quarter of the year. “I am busy working on my album and it would be out by the last quarter of the year. I promise not to disappoint my fans. I would deliver because I love you all,” she said. http://naijafussion..com/2015/03/i-wasnt-trying-to-seduce-president-seyi.html |
Former Portugal international Luis Figo confirmed on Friday he has obtained the backing letters of six national football associations, with five being the minimum, to challenge Sepp Blatter for the FIFA presidency. “I am happy to confirm that my six backing letters have been sent to FIFA this week ahead of the deadline,” the 42-year-old former Real Madrid and Barcelona star said on his Twitter account. FIFA’s electoral commission must now validate or refuse, within approximately ten days, the candidates eligible to challenge the long-serving Blatter at the May 29 elections. Figo, is now in the running along with Asian Football Confederation vice-president Prince Ali bin Al Hussein, Dutch football chief Michael van Praag, ex-FIFA executive Jerome Champagne and former French winger David Ginola. Van Praag also revealed he has backed by six associations including Belgium, Sweden, Scotland, Romania, the Faroe Islands and naturally the Netherlands. Van Praag and Jordanian Prince Ali appear to have the strongest cases to overthrow Blatter, who is bidding for a fifth term, but has come in for a barrage of criticism over the voting process that led to Russia being given the rights to host the 2018 World Cup and Qatar the 2022 tournament. Figo found support in the form of compatriot and Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho on announcing his decision. “Luis Figo’s candidacy is a great step forward for football. His career over many years guarantees a better future for FIFA,” said Mourinho. “I believe in his character and determination as well as his passion for the game. He will be a president focussed on football and its general improvement, acting closely with all federations.” Blatter on Thursday submitted his candidature and is favourite to be re-elected. “Today (Thursday) is a key date in the electoral calendar. I’ve made my submission, now the electoral committee follow a process,” the 78-year-old Swiss wrote on his Twitter account. Blatter, who has held the post since 1998, had already indicated his intention to seek another term, and has wide support in Asia, Africa and Oceania. It has yet to be confirmed whether Ginola and fellow Frenchman Champagne have won the necessary backing of five associations. “I am waiting for one or two confirmations to present the five backing letters,” Ginola told AFP on Thursday. “Obviously it is very difficult, difficult to bring a message to a system that is so locked. But I remain confident and we’re still in the race,” added the former international who is being paid £250,000 ($376,000, 332,000 euros) to stand by a betting company and was looking to generate money for his bid via crowd-funding. http://naijafussion..com/2015/01/figo-obtains-necessary-backing-to.html |
As the hot season begins, a medical practitioner, Dr Emenike Okezie, has advised Nigerians to seek urgent medical help if they observe symptoms of dehydration. Okezie gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Abuja. He explained that dehydration could lead to life threatening illnesses. “Dehydration occurs when the body does not have as much water and fluids as it should,’’ he said. According to him, thirst and dark coloured urine are early signs of dehydration. Okezie said that if severe dehydration was not given immediate medical attention, it would lead to complications or even death because the blood would stop circulating. He said that there were ways that the body tries to increase water intake and decreases water loss. The medical practitioner said that continued fluid loss in the body could affect the quality of life and cause damage to the body. Okezie said that dehydration could be mild, moderate or severe depending on how much of the body weight is lost through fluids. He said that the dehydration could be as a result of heat exposure, too much exercise and work-related activity. He said the increase in urination due to infection, fever, diarrhoea and vomiting could also cause dehydration. “Dehydration can also be attributed to some diseases such as diabetes, significant injury to the skin, such as burns or mouth sores; water is lost through damaged skin. “Dehydration can affect your kidney function and cause kidney stones to develop. “It can also lead to liver and muscle damage,’’ he said. Okezie further identified other signs as dry mouth, eyes that do not produce tears during pain or sorrow, feeling tired and confused. “Not passing urine for eight hours, dry skin that sags slowly into position when pinched up, rapid heartbeat, irritation, hollow eyes and a weak pulse. “Blood in your stools, low blood pressure, cold hands and feet, seizures and low level of consciousness are signs that you should watch out for,’’ he said. Okezie advised Nigerians to take a lot of fluids every day, even when they are well. He further urged people to drink more water now that the weather was hot and during exercise. “If anyone in your family is ill, pay attention to how much fluid they are able to drink. Pay close attention to children and older adults. “Anyone with a fever, vomiting or diarrhoea should drink plenty of fluids so as to avoid dehydration. “If you think you or someone in your family may become dehydrated, call your healthcare provider immediately,’’ Okezie said. http://naijafussion..com/2015/01/severe-dehydration-can-lead-to-death.html |

The DailyMail has more: Researchers found that just a single piece of chewing gum can remove 100 million bacteria – 10 per cent of the microbial load in saliva – in ten minutes. And they say that gum can be just as effective as flossing – although they each targets different areas of the mouth. The study, which appeared in the journal Plos One, was led by researchers from the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. They found that the gum was most effective in the first 30 seconds of chewing, and after that it would become less effective in trapping bacteria on a sliding scale. Also, they note that only gum that did not contain sugar was useful; if it did contain sugar, it could ‘feed’ oral bacteria. In one of their experiments, known numbers of bacteria were finger-chewed into the mouths of participants, and they were then asked to chew gum for 10 minutes. The researchers found that about 100 million bacteria were detected on each piece of chewed gum, with the number increasing as chewing time increased. ‘Trapped bacteria were clearly visualised in chewed gum using scanning-electron-microscopy,’ they wrote in their paper. They used two unnamed brands of spearming gum in their study. http://naijafussion..com/2015/01/odd-chewing-gum-for-10-minutes-removes.html |
The Country Director for UNAIDS, Bilali Camara stated this in Abuja during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). https://static.pulse.ng/img/incoming/crop3431429/1082786669-chorizontal-w644/Antiretroviral-drugs-Nigeria.jpg Four companies in Nigeria will soon begin local production of anti-retroviral drugs, the Country Director for UNAIDS, Bilali Camara said on Thursday, January 22. Camara stated this in Abuja during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). The Country Director also added that the local production of the drugs would make it easier for people to receive treatment at a cheaper rate. “We have commenced negotiations with four pharmaceutical companies; the companies have been certified by the World Health Organisation for the general manufacturing practices,” Camara said. He also added that once the companies complete the prequalification processes, “they will commence the production of the anti-retroviral drugs in Nigeria.” Other countries in West and Central Africa will also benefit from Nigeria’s production of the drugs as no company in the region has achieved the feat. UNAIDS, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS, is the main advocate for accelerated, comprehensive and coordinated global action on the HIV/AIDS epidemic. http://naijafussion..com/2015/01/in-nigeria-4-companies-to-begin.html |
Police have issued CCTV footage of an armed robbery at a petrol station in Denny in a bid to catch the culprit. The video shows a masked person brandishing what appears to be a gun before taking cash from the till at the Gulf filling station on Glasgow Road. Police said the lone female staff attendant was "terrified" by the incident, which occurred at about 21:30 on 21 January. Officers continue to investigate and have appealed for witnesses. Watch the video here: http:///pf1Gj5 The suspect, thought to be a man, was about 6ft tall, between 16 and 30 years of age, was of slim or medium build and was wearing dark clothing including a black hoodie with the hood up. Det Insp Graeme Hendry said officers had been making "extensive" inquiries. He said: "The response from people in Denny has been magnificent and I am grateful to them, however we have still to identify the person. "I am sure that someone knows the identity of the person and that they too will be alarmed by the trauma this crime caused the staff at the garage." |
According to prosecutors, Victorino Chua murdered three patients and poisoned 18 others by contaminating saline bags and ampoules with insulin. https://static.pulse.ng/img/incoming/crop3425049/1032784398-chorizontal-w644/Victorino-Chua-main.jpg A hospital nurse in Manchester, United Kingdom has been charged with murder after it was revealed that he killed three patients and poisoned 18 others by contaminating saline bags and ampoules with insulin. 49-year-old Victorino Chua was also said to have deliberately altered the dosages on prescription charts while working as a staff nurse at Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport. The court learnt that 21 patients suffered as a result of his wicked act with three of them, 44-year-old Tracey Arden, 71-year-old Arnold Lancaster and 83-year-old Derek Weavereventually dying. Victorino Chua is a Filipino who first came to the UK in 2002 and had worked at Stepping Hill since 2009. He pleaded not guilty to 36 charges in all, including the three alleged murders, one count of grievous bodily harm with intent, 23 counts of attempted grievous bodily harm, eight counts of attempting to cause a poison to be administered and one count of administering a poison. The alleged offences were carried out between June 2011 and January 2012. The prosecutor, Peter Wright QC said a “pattern” began to emerge which led to the identification of the killer after a massive police investigation. "The pieces of the forensic jigsaw began to emerge. The person responsible for each of these matters became increasingly clear. It was, we say, Victorino Chua. As the investigation intensified, the common denominator, the defendant, was shown in sharper and sharper relief. Motive for this course of conduct, whomsoever is responsible, is difficult to determine with precision. Only the person responsible could ever know why they would embark on such conduct," Wright told the jury. The trial continues. http://naijafussion..com/2015/01/nurse-allegedly-poisons-21-patients.html |
A female undergraduate who planned her kidnap with her boyfriend to extort money from her mother says she did it for love. https://static.pulse.ng/img/incoming/crop3418872/8612784416-chorizontal-w644/Kidnap-Crime.jpg The Delta State University, Abraka, undergraduate who was arrested last week for faking her kidnap with her boyfriend to extort N10 million from her parents, Belynda Chinwe Bosa, has confessed to the police that she did what she did because of the love she has for the man, so as not to lose him to another woman. The 25-year-old Mass Communication student told the police that she decided to stage manage the abduction because her boyfriend is poor and she wanted to help him get money from her parents, claiming that when one is in love, he could do anything to prove that love. Bosa, who was paraded by the police in Asaba, Delta State, also said they wanted to use the money to set up a business and settle down as husband and wife. Narrating what led her into the crime that has now put a dent on her image, Bosa said: "We have been in love for over a year now. To me, I am in love and just want to get some money from my parents so that we can begin our lives together in peace. At first I did not know that the whole thing will escalate to this extent, but here we are paraded before the whole world. See, let me say that what I did was just to help my boyfriend to be somebody. I love him and I can do anything to assist him become somebody in the future so that we can be husband and wife. However, I must tell you that I am regretting the whole thing because I have disgraced myself, my family. Just look me, paraded before the whole world as a kidnapper; you see love can make you look stupid at times, it makes you to do stupid things, people will not understand until they will be in love. Our initial plan was just to get reasonable amount that can sustain us but you see, my boyfriend went ahead to ask for N10 million; where do you think my parents will get that from? My father, a medical doctor, is late and my mum is a retired school bursar, so I was not happy when they called my mum demanding for N10 million and I made it clear to my boyfriend. I did it, I don’t want to lie, it is bad and I know it, my parents should forgive me because I was overwhelmed by love. When you are in love, it can lead you to do stupid things that people will think are stupid, but you see what I did, I did for love because I love my boyfriend so much that I wanted to settle down with him. He has no money hence we both agreed to arrange my kidnap so that we can extort money from my parents. The money, according to our initial plans, was to enable my boyfriend to pay my dowry and then use part of it to settle down and use the remaining money to engage in a business that we can use to take care of ourselves after marriage. I will like to advice others to be careful, because love can be crazy and may lead to do crazy things to keep it going." The boyfriend also stated his own part in the kidnap, stating that it was because he was so much in love with the girl and wanted to marry her by all means that he decided to go with the plan. "When she visited me in Port Harcourt, we both agreed to find a way out and the best option was to fake the kidnap of my girlfriend. And so, after agreeing with each other, we called the mother that her daughter has been kidnapped by unknown gunmen and after some time we called back using different GSM lines demanding for N100 million as ransom for her release. But after negotiation, they were able to pay N500,000 into our account with a new generation bank in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. We went to collect the money and before I could know it, one of the suspects who owned the account was arrested and he led police to arrest me and my girlfriend (the victim) and it was discovered that we faked the victim’s kidnap just to extort money from the parents. However, before the arrest, we shared the money among ourselves. I gave one of the suspects N200, 000; I took N200, 000 and equally gave another some money and at the end, I bought my girlfriend a GSM phone. We spent my share of the money in lodging in hotel, feeding ourselves and now about N27, 000 is remaining, this was how the whole thing happened." http://naijafussion..com/2015/01/undergraduate-gives-reasons-she.html |
In an ideal world, the job would go to the most qualified candidate. However, there are many reasons why you might not get hired for a job – even if you have all of the skills and experience to successfully do the work. Here are ten reasons other than your qualifications why employers won’t hire you: 1: You aren’t very savvy on social media When you’re looking for a job, social media is more media than it is social. Remember that anything you publish has the potential to be broadcast to unforeseen audiences. Even if you have strict privacy settings, it is possible for someone inside your network to copy and share photos or posts. Employers will Google you and look you up on social media sites. In a recent Jobvite survey, more than 40% of companies said they have turned down candidates based on what they see on their social profiles. Here at Workopolis, we recently looked up a candidate whose Facebook profile picture revealed him wearing only a sock. (Not on his foot.) Your profile picture isn’t private. Choose it much more wisely than that guy. A sales manager shared the story of a candidate with a brilliant resume who interviewed well, but who didn’t get the job because he was smoking or holding a bong in what seemed like every photo ever taken him. 2: You’ve got a bad attitude We’ve all met candidates who come into an interview and start complaining about their former boss or coworkers, they grumble about their past work as if this will show why they’re motivated to make a change. It doesn’t show that at all. It just makes them look like complainers. Employers want to hire upbeat, positive team members. And then there are the strange attitudes. On recruiter told me the story of Franklin Worthington the Third, who referred to himself as such on his resume, and who spoke of himself in the third person. “When Franklin takes on a project, Franklin succeeds.” Franklin didn’t get the job. And given that there is so little chance of the employer mistaking you for your ancestors, you can leave “The Third” off your resume. 3: You don’t do any research As I mentioned in the introduction to this article, not doing your research can cost you the job. Employers want to hire candidates who know about their industry and its challenges, and who have thought about ways that they can contributed to the company’s success. If your first question to the interviewer is, “So, what does this company do?” you won’t be getting the call. (And hiring managers do get asked that very question.) 4: You smell bad Smokers often use a cigarette to calm their nerves. And job interviews can be nerve wracking. However, if you walk into the interview right after having that cigarette, the chances are that you are going to reek of smoke. That can be a turn off for many people. The last thing you want to do in a job interview is give the employer a reason not to like you. The same goes for heavy cologne or perfume use. You never know who has allergies, sensitivities or simple distaste for the scent. Play it safe, go in clean and fresh. 5: You’re sloppy Proofread your resume and cover letter. So many recruiters told me that this was the deal-breaker that they most often see in candidates. Misused words, spelling mistakes and typos all make it look like you can’t write properly, you don’t pay attention to detail, or you just don’t care that much. Any of those can keep you from being hired. 6: Your resume makes you seem like a weirdo or a pain A Toronto recruiter is still puzzling over the man she didn’t hire who had an otherwise strong resume until he listed his interests as “a passion for weapons and all things squirrel-related.” Keep all of the information on your resume relevant to the job you’re applying for. There’s no need to list hobbies or interests. Another recruiter told me about receiving a resume that stated in the objective statement: “Must be for a company that highly values diversity and sustainability.” It’s not that the employer didn’t value those things, it’s that by making it the opening line of the resume, the candidate made himself look like he’d be a pain in the butt to work with. You need to show an employer why they would want to hire you in the first place before you start making demands about their values. Another candidate closed his resume with the line, “Given my obvious qualifications, if I am not selected for this position, I expect to be informed of why.” I imagine they’re still waiting for that phone call. 7: You’re desperate While it’s good to be enthusiastic about the role, employers are turned off by candidates who seem simply desperate for a job. It’s a fine line: you have to play it cool, but not too cool. Display confidence without being cocky. 8: You have no references If you can’t find people who will speak well of your work and professionalism, you’re in trouble. I’ve told the story before of the candidate who handed over a typed list of three references, and then she pointed to the first one and said, “But don’t call this one.” After a few seconds thought, she added of another, “Better not call this one either.” One candidate gave a recruiter three reference letters. Because the font type and style of all three were very similar, the recruiter decided to call the recruiters to verify. It turns out that the letters were indeed fake. However the worst thing about the story is that all three people called said that until they heard of the bogus reference letters, they actually would have been happy to recommend the candidate. Trust your references. Tell them about the job you’re applying for and ask if they would be willing to recommend you for it. If you can’t use your former boss, find someone else at the company that you worked with. (If there’s really no one out there who will speak well of your work, then references likely aren’t your biggest problem.) 9: You don’t look the part A job interview isn’t a fashion show, and you don’t have to be a super model. For the most part it’s enough to look well groomed, professional and respectful. This means dressing up a little more than you normally would to show that you care and that you take the interview seriously. 10: You have unrealistic salary expectations Of course you know how much money you’d like to earn – and what perks you’d like to have from your employer. But if your expectations are unrealistic, or you’re too demanding or inflexible, it will turn employers off. Do your research, find out the salary range that jobs like yours pay in your area, and be willing to negotiate for the best deal you can get. Finding a job is hard, and the competition can be fierce. But if you keep getting turned down for jobs that you know you’re qualified for, maybe it’s time to make sure that you’re not inadvertently acting in one of the ways that repels most employers. http://naijafussion..com/2015/01/10-reasons-no-one-will-hire-you.html |
John Lewis bosses have refused to honour the price, saying it was a "genuine mistake", sparking fury in customers https://i1.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article4995891.ece/alternates/s615/HP-Pavilion-Laptop.jpg Shoppers rushed to buy laptop computers worth £500 for the knockdown price of £40 after an online blunder by John Lewis. The mix-up happened after prices and pictures of software equipment appeared alongside descriptions of laptops. But bosses have refused to honour the deal instead they have promised to credit their accounts with £25 as a "goodwill gesture". The mix up happened after prices and pictures of software equipment appeared alongside descriptions of laptops and tablets. She did not want to be named, but said: “Amazon made a similar mistake and honoured the sale. I would have expected a company with the reputation of John Lewis to do the same.” A spokesman for the company – whose famous slogan is Never Knowingly Undersold – said: “This was a genuine mistake and we have written to all customers affected and provided a full refund along with a £25 gesture of goodwill for the inconvenience caused.” In a letter to customers, John Lewis said: “Unfortunately, there was an error on our website and some of the information displayed led to a misunderstanding of exactly what were offering under the product description. “While the main part of the page displayed the software items that you have ordered, there was also some description of a computer/laptop/tablet. “Unfortunately, this information was incorrect and, understandably, caused some confusion.” http://naijafussion..com/2015/01/shoppers-rush-to-buy-40-laptops-after.html |

According to Ms. Mawedo Dagunro- Aliyu, Product Manager, Jangola.com, ‘it may be hard to believe but this uncommon orange peel shaped-creation is actually a high heel shoe.’ British architect Julian Hakes used his architectural cum engineering skills to design the uncommon 'Mojito' footwear, named after the lime-based vodka cocktail. The Julian HakesMojito is a tastefully sculptural curve mixed into a blend of simple creativity combining bright contrast leather lining that features a high heel and peep toe to make this a very comfortable and elegant shoe. Unlike a traditional shoe the Mojito doesn't have a foot plate - but supports only the ball and heel which Mr Hakes says is perfectly functional and makes the wearer feel like she's walking on air. It protects the ball and the heel - that's where the load is transferred when you walk. http://naijafussion..com/2015/01/jangolacom-brings-uncommon-sculptural.html |
Probe underway after tragic Erica Morales, 36, never got to meet the babies she gave birth to a month early. A woman who gave birth to quadruplets conceived through IVF died moments later before she got to meet her babies. Erica Morales, 36, and husband Carlos were desperate for a family so underwent fertility treatment. Real estate broker Mrs Morales delivered three girls and one boy on Thursday in Phoenix, Arizona, a month early. https://i4.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article4994031.ece/alternates/s1227b/Erica-Morales.jpg https://i1.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article4994036.ece/alternates/s1227b/Erica-Morales.jpg But, tragically, hours later, she died before seeing children Carlos Jr, Paisley, Tracy, and Erica, who are all healthy. Medics are probing her death to establish a cause which remains unknown. She went into Banner Good Samaritan Hospital hospital on Tuesday. She posted on Facebook the births would be premature. She wrote: "I have to get admitted until delivery. It's been down lower today but it's too late. "He will push deliver up or stall it to to 34 weeks. I'm 31 tomorrow. He said I did phenomenal. A poster child for quads. He wish they could all go this way but this last part we have to do it carefully because u can stroke out with bad blood pressure. I'm sure I won't but he looking at how to finish things." Relatives have set up a GoFundMe page to help raise money for Mr Morales, from Memphis, Tennessee, who married her in October 2007, and now faces bringing up four children alone. It has had 8,900 shares. Her cousin Nicole Todman wrote on the page: "My best friend and her husband Carlos have tried for the last few years to have a baby and with their Dr's help they were blessed with not one but four beautiful children, but with that blessing came the most unimaginable tragedy my best friend was lost. "This is an extremely emotional time, Erica's passing is traumatic and my goal is to help ease the financial worry as much as possible so every dollar helps if it's $1 or $1000 it will all be used to provide for the beautiful babies Erica fought so hard to have and in the end gave her life for." She told Fox 10: "It is so hard to know she fought so hard for her children. She will never get to brush their hair, hold their hand, watch them get married." Cousin Christina Todman told Fox 10: "This is all they wanted, to have this family, to make their family complete." http://naijafussion..com/2015/01/the-most-unimaginable-tragedy-mum-dies.html |

https://tribune.com.ng/images/coffee-sleep.jpg What do you do when you have a board presentation due in the morning and by the night before, you are yet to begin preparations for the project? Or as a student, you have an exam and you are yet to cover grounds in studying? How about what you would do if you had to attend to pressing matters after a night of poor sleep? For most people, a wake-me-up is the immediate line of action and the beverage of choice is coffee. It is generally believed that a cup of coffee is a miracle mug of liquid energy. All that in needed is a cup or more, and there is immediate spike in alertness. The ingredient that does the trick is caffeine. Caffeine is considered a drug that stimulates the central nervous system and increases energy and alertness. There have also been reported cases of some people receiving a temporary boost in mood. While for some, the desired effect of a burst of energy is achieved, for others, drinking coffee either has no effect on them or might as well be a sedative as it makes them sleep off. Caffeine works by blocking sleep-inducing chemicals in the brain and increasing adrenaline production. This temporarily makes the consumer feel more alert. After ingesting caffeine (most times in the form of coffee and sometimes in the form of cocoa, some soft drinks and certain drugs), it is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract into the bloodstream and reaches its peak level in the blood within one hour and stays there for four to six hours. It diffuses throughout the entire body, passing all biological membranes, including the blood–brain barrier and the placental barrier. This is why pregnant women are cautioned to avoid it as it can induce foetal malformation by affecting the expression of genes that are vital in development. Although caffeine should make people feel more alert, sometimes, it may not have the needed effect and this is dependent on certain factors. According to Dr. Irene Bassey, a medical practitioner,“caffeine is mostly found in coffee but sometimes it is added to other beverages and food products in small quantities to improve flavour and taste. Caffeine affects people differently. The difference varies based on their body size, their sex, and how sensitive they are to caffeine’s effects. There are genetic variations that can affect an individual’s level of sensitivity to caffeine. “The fact is that though caffeine would keep you temporarily awake, when the effect wears off, you would experience a “coffee crash” and feel even sleepier. So, if you are planning on staying alert for long, you should actually stay away from caffeine. When you notice that drinking moderate cups of coffee doesn’t keep you alert, you shouldn’t overdose on it. Too much caffeine is not good for the body and can cause anxiety, headaches, nervousness and tremours. It can also lead to addiction. Four to seven cups of coffee a day is too much.” Even in moderate portions, coffee may not be completely beneficial to the body. A report in the July-August 2002 issue of Psychosomatic Medicine pointed out that the more cups of coffee one takes throughout the day, the more experiences of fluctuations in energy and alertness, which can lead to chronic adrenal exhaustion. Besides temporary alertness, it has also been discovered to cause uneven heart rhythm, raise blood pressure and dehydrate the body owing to its diuretic properties. Researchers at the Department of Physiology and Biochemistry, University of Ilorin, Kwara State, in a study on the “Effect of caffeine on the risk of coronary heart disease — A re-evaluation” published in the Indian Journal of Clinical Biochemistry, add that caffeine predisposes consumers of caffeine-containing beverages to coronary heart disease. The United States of America’s Food and Drug Agency also cautioned on the continued use of coffee that contains caffeine because of its addictive abilities. The agency stated that when people use caffeine every day, their bodies get used to it, and they don’t get the “good effects” of feeling more awake and able to concentrate unless they use more of it. This situation is called “tolerance.” If a person gets withdrawal symptoms when they suddenly stop using caffeine, then the person has a physical dependence (addiction) on caffeine. Withdrawal symptoms include severe headaches, muscle aches, temporary feelings of depression, and irritability. Ironically, when people experience these symptoms, they often just take in more caffeine to make them go away and the cycle continues. Like every other form of substance addiction, it might require some form of intervention to break the cycle. Whether coffee works for you or not, Dr. Bassey suggests that it is better to look for alternative means, which are healthy and have no side effects, to keep yourself alert. “Mild exercises or physical activity is one good way to get the heart pumping and keep one alert. You don’t want to exert yourself too much while exercising because that would also tire you out and make you sleep even better. A stroll, skipping or going up and down a flight of stairs can work. Also, doing things that stimulate the mind and brain can keep you alert. It could be a game or puzzle. It has to be something you enjoy so that boredom won’t also make you sleep off. Water and non-caffeinated teas are equally good beverages you can drink; these would not dehydrate you like coffee does. http://naijafussion..com/2015/01/why-coffee-makes-some-sleep-keeps.html |
https://i.livescience.com/images/i/000/073/379/iFF/smartshoe-device.jpg?1421287991 The next generation of wearables could be powered by an unlikely energy source: you. Two new devices that fit inside the sole of your shoe can harvest energy from your movements as you walk or run, and then use that energy to power sensors and other electronics. These devices could one day be used to create wearables that never need to be plugged into a charger, according to the researchers in Germany who developed them. One of the devices, the "shock harvester," generates power when the heel of your shoe hits the ground. The other device, dubbed the "swing harvester," generates power when your foot swings forward as you walk or run. The harvesters can be connected to electronics inside your shoe that track things like speed, movement and temperature. "Both [devices] are based on the same principle — electromagnetic induction," said Klevis Ylli, a doctoral student at the Hahn-Schickard-Gesellschaft Institute of Micromachining and Information Technologyin Germany, and lead author of the paper outlining the new energy harvesting devices. [10 Technologies That Will Transform Your Life] Each device contains coils of wire and stacks of magnets. As the person wearing the device walks or runs, the magnets move past the coils, causing the magnetic field within the coils to change. This changing magnetic field creates a voltage, or charge, within the wire, which can then be used to power whatever electronics are embedded in the shoe, Ylli told Live Science. The swing harvester — which is about 3 inches (70 millimeters) long, less than an inch (19.5 mm) wide and half an inch (15 mm) tall — was originally developed to power a pair of self-lacing shoes. The device fits into the sole at the heel of a shoe and weighs just under an ounce (25 grams), which means that users hardly notice it when their legs are swinging, Ylli said. The shock harvester is slightly bigger, and weighs about a third of a pound (150 grams) and was developed for a different application — providing power for an indoor navigation system. Indoor navigation systems are an alternative to satellite-enabled GPS navigation systems, which don't always work inside of buildings or in crowded urban areas. Used by firefighters and military personnel, these indoor systems often utilize sensors to collect information about a person's location and then transmit this data wirelessly to a central computer. "For the indoor navigation system, there are sensors [accelerometers] within the shoe that determine how fast you're moving, acceleration and the angles that your foot has traveled. And from this data, the system can calculate the path that you have walked," Ylli said. A battery, also located inside the shoe, is powered by the shock harvester, and keeps these sensors running. In recent tests, Ylli and his colleagues connected the harvesters to a temperature sensor embedded within the shoe of a study participant who was walking on a treadmill. The researchers found that the person's walking generated enough electricity to power the temperature sensor as well as a wireless transmitter inside the shoe that sent the temperature data from the sensor to a smartphone. In the future, a similar setup could be used to transmit data from accelerometers embedded in a shoe to a smartphone or tablet, Ylli said. Such a self-charging "smart shoe" would function much like a fitness tracker, monitoring steps taken, as well as distance and speed. "If you take a close look at the scientific environment, there are plenty of people working on these types of [harvesters] for shoes. I think there is some interest there, and people have high hopes that harvesters will get better over time and will be feasible for powering devices," Ylli said. Going forward, Ylli said, he and his colleagues plan to optimize their harvesters to capture even more energy from the human gait. An Australian man who does not want to have more children reportedly stumped on his pregnant wife's stomach with the intention of forcefully aborting the baby. https://static.pulse.ng/img/incoming/crop3407978/9492783029-chorizontal-w644/Pregnant-Woman-Violence.jpg An heartless man from Melbourne, Australia, has been arrestedand taken to court on charges of assault, battery and attempted murder after he allegedly stumped on his pregnant wife'sstomach in an attempt to abort the baby she is carrying, claiming he has the right to abort the baby. The 40-year-old man whose name is being protected because of the unborn baby, prosecutors say, also forced the wife to have sex with him, all in a bid to terminate her pregnancy. When he appeared in court for the first time, he was denied bail when a judge heard that the police had serious concerns about the safety of the woman, who was so afraid of her husband that she refused to enter the courtroom when his case was called. The Melbourne Magistrate’s Court heard that the man told his wife 'to get used to it' when she told him that she did not want to have sex with him. The defendant, however, told investigators that he wanted to have sex with his wife in order to abort the baby and also trampled on her stomach. His argument was that as the father, he had the right to abort the baby as he could not afford to have more children. The court also heard that he had forced the woman to have abortions twice in the past but this time, the woman refused to accede to his request, forcing him to take the extreme measures. He was charged with a two count charge of assault and another two counts of making threats after police told the court that he had threatened to kill his wife and teenage son unless she agreed to have an abortion. Boris Kodjoe took to Twitter to commiserate with Nigerian and questioned world leaders for ignoring the 2000 reported deaths in the country. https://static.pulse.ng/img/incoming/crop3403092/1082784527-chorizontal-w644/boris-kodjoe.jpg Film actor, Boris Kodjoe has criticised world leaders who attended the unity march organized in France over the deaths of 17 people who were killed last week for ignoring the 2000 reported deaths that occurred in Baga, Nigeria. About 40 world leaders on Sunday joined over 1.5 million in Paris to protest the killing of 17 people who died during a three-day attack on satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, police officers, and a mall. However, the world seems to have turned a blind eye to the reported 2000 civilian deaths caused by an attack by insurgent group, Boko Haram. The German born actor took to his Twitter and Instagram account to ask why world leaders have chosen to ignore the reports. “The killing of 17 victims in 3 despicable terrorist acts this week prompted a unity march of 1.5 million people including 40 world leaders in Paris. Well done. Maybe it's just me but did anyone else hear about Nigeria? 2000 civilians including women and children were massacred by terrorists this week,” the German born actor asked on his Instagram. “Can somebody tell me why nobody is marching for those victims? Any world leaders planning a trip to Lagos or Abuja this week? Too busy? Bad flight connections? Just asking. Imagine the statement we could make,” he further added. American actor and comedian, Marlon Wayans also took to his Instagram and Twitter page to urge his followers pray for the Baga victims. “As we pray for the 17 victims in Paris let's not forget about the 2,000 massacred in Nigeria. This type of terrorism must end. #myheartisheavy #prayfornigeria #prayforworldpeace #theystillhaventbroughtourgirlsback,” the comedian writes on Instagram. https://thedailyeight.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Brain.jpg Despite decades of scientific study, the human brain remains one of the most fascinating and mysterious phenomena in the natural world. In fact, the more we learn about the brain, the less we seem to know, and there are many researchers who think that we will never fully understand everything about our brains. In the meantime, here are eight of the strangest and most intriguing facts science has uncovered to date......... 1. The Average Brain Contains 100,000 Miles’ Worth of Axons Axons are neurons that our brains use to conduct electrical impulses from one place to another. In you took all the axons out of a human brain and arranged them end-to-end, the resultant string would be long enough to encircle the Earth more than four times. Now that’s mind-blowing! 2. Your Brain Houses Enough Electricity to Power a Light Bulb The electrical impulses that travel across neurons are the primary source of power in the human brain, but you may be surprised to learn just how much electricity is crackling around up there. At any given moment, your brain is firing with 25 watts of electrical energy — enough to keep a light bulb turned on. https://thedailyeight.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Brain-Electricity.jpg 3. The Average Brain Stores 1 Quadrillion Pieces of Information The sum of the things you learn over the course of your life really adds up, but you may be surprised at just how much information the average mature brain stores. By the end of your lifetime, your brain will have around 1 quadrillion pieces of information stored. One quadrillion is a thousand billion, or a one followed by 15 zeroes. https://thedailyeight.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Brain-Storage.jpg 4. Your Brain Uses 25 Percent of Your Body’s Oxygen and Energy Even though the average brain accounts for only about 2 percent of body mass, it ties up a full one-quarter of your energy and oxygen intake. That’s because your brain is functioning on rapid-fire all the time, even when you’re sleeping. In fact, studies have shown that your brain experiences more activity when you’re asleep than it does when you’re awake. https://thedailyeight.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Brain-Oxygen.jpg Continue reading >>>>>>>>http://naijafussion..com/2015/01/8-weird-facts-about-human-braincheck.html#more |
The saying, “there are no permanent enemies in politics, only permanent interests” aptly captures former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s surprise appearance, Saturday, at the church wedding of President Goodluck Jonathan’s niece, Inebharapu. Ine was joined in holy matrimony to Simeon Onyemaechi at a well-attended service held at the National Christian Centre, Abuja. https://www.informationng.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/GEJ-OBJ1.jpg Obasanjo’s appearance was unexpected following his recent public spat with President Jonathan. It would be recalled that the former president had on Monday said Nigeria was facing economic problems due to the failure of the present administration to plan for a rainy day. He told eminent women leaders from the South-West, who visited him at his Hilltop residence in Abeokuta, Ogun State that the nation’s reserves, which as of 2007 stood at $67bn had been depleted to around half that figure by the Jonathan-led government. The president fired back, although indirectly, when he described some statesmen as ordinary “Motor Park touts”. Speaking when he received the executive and members of the Board of Trustees, BoT, of the Northern Elders Council, NEC, led by Alhaji Tanko Yakassai at the State House, Wednesday, Mr. Jonathan said being a statesman is not by virtue of the “big office” one has occupied before but by virtue of what one brings to the table. “Some people are hiding under some big names and creating a lot of problems in this country. Making provocative statements in this country; statements that will set this country ablaze and you tell me you are a senior citizen. You are not a senior citizen; you can never be. You are ordinary motor park tout”, he said. But despite the Cat and Mouse relationship between them, Obasanjo attended the president’s niece church wedding accompanied by his long time protégé, Senator Andy Uba and some other aides. His arrival attracted a loud ovation from those who were already seated, especially women and just as he was ushered into the hall, the ex-president got a standing ovation from his admirers as he took his seat at the VIP section. He was later joined at the section by the Senate President, David Mark and his wife, Helen. About 20 minutes after, President Jonathan entered the hall with his wife, Patience, and the bride. Just before taking their seats, the president and his wife took turns to exchange pleasantries with Obasanjo, Mark and other dignitaries. To underscore the significance of Obasanjo’s presence at the president’s niece wedding, during the recognition of special guests at the service, when his name was mentioned, the congregation erupted in a loud applause. In his vote of thanks also at the service, President Jonathan specially recognised Obasanjo’s presence, calling him ‘our father’. “Let me appreciate our father, President Olusegun Obasanjo, for being here with us. Thank you for coming”, he said. The president advised the couple to embrace the virtue of endurance, saying they should learn to be resolving their disagreements in their bedroom without involving third parties. He specifically advised the newlyweds not to bring their problems to him because he has more than enough issues to deal with already. This is contained in a statement issued in Kano on Saturday by the officer in charge of operation at the board, Sani Nasidi. The statement noted that the destruction of the commodity was carried out in three phases within the period under review. The statement read: “In the first phase 42, 000 bottles were destroyed while in the second and third phases 40,000 and 244,151 bottles were destroyed respectively’’, indicating that there were a total of 197, 173 bottles of beer that were yet to be destroyed by the board. “These remaining bottles of beer are being kept at some of the Local Government areas where they were impounded and they would be destroyed at a later date. ‘’But the other bottles of beer were destroyed at Hawan Kalibawa in Dawakin Tofa Local Government area of the state’’, he said. The statement explained that the special operations were carried out in collaboration with the eight Local Government Areas that made up Kano metropolis. The statement, which commended other security agencies in the state for their support and cooperation with the board, called on them to maintain the tempo. It, however, called on the state government to provide the board with the necessary facilities particularly operational vehicles to enable it discharge its duties more effectively. Jonchuck has been arrested after he was caught throwing his five-year-old daughter of a bridge in Florida. https://static.pulse.ng/img/incoming/crop3396020/4182782005-chorizontal-w644/s2.jpg https://static.pulse.ng/img/incoming/origs3395992/8571696556-w308-h960/s3.jpg Police in Florida have arrested John Nicholas Jonchuck Jr., a father accused of throwing his 5-year-old daughter off of a bridge in Florida. According to Associate Press, the police encountered Jonchuck shortly after midnight on Wednesday, January 7. He was driving about 100 mph toward the Sunshine Skyway bridge when a police officer caught up with him. Jonchuck grabbed his daughter, Phoebe, from the back seat and carried her to the railing of the beach. St. Petersburg police, Chief Anthony Holloway, said it wasn't clear whether Phoebe was alive when Jonchuck threw her into Tampa Bay about 60 feet below, though the officer said he "thought he heard the child scream." Phoebe Jonchuck's body was found in the water about an hour and a half later, police said. Her empty pink car seat was sitting in the back of her father's car when authorities stopped him in nearby Manatee County. Police had an encounter with Jonchuck prior to him throwing his daughter off the bridge. A police officer interviewed Jonchuck through the phone because Jonchuck's own attorney,Genevieve Torres, had frantically called 911 to report that his client was acting "strange." Genevieve said Jonchuck had called her "God" and asked her to translate a Bible in Swedish when they met Wednesday to talk about his custody case for his daughter, Phoebe. Yet, police say when they police talked to Jonchuck on the phone, nothing seemed odd and everything appeared okay. John Jonchuck, 25, had custody of his daughter despite a lengthy arrest history involving his turbulent relationship with the child's mother. The song by Lil Kesh, which has always been on the radar of the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) with an earlier issue last year, has been restricted by the regulatory body for regular playing time on radio. https://static.pulse.ng/img/incoming/crop3397259/0442784866-chorizontal-w644/Lil-Kesh-shoki-memo.jpg Gather up Nigerians, one of the hit songs of last year, Shoki (remix) will no longer be played during the daylight hours in Lagos State. The song by Lil Kesh, which has always been on the radar of the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) with an earlier issue last year, has been restricted by the regulatory body for regular playing time on radio. The song will now be limited to airplay during ‘watershed’ time, that is, between 10pm and 5am. This was communicated in a release by the NBC dating Wednesday, January 7, 2014, and signed by the Director of Lagos Zone, Ifeoma Theo-Obodo. “I have been directed to involve all radio stations under Lagos zone that the above named musical, “Shoki” by Lil Kesh featuring Davido and Olamide contains some connotations of foul impressions.” The letter read. “This makes it highly suggestive of obscene representation and could corrupt the sensibilities of the impressionable and underaged.” “In view of the above, the musical in question can only be allowed on air during watershed period, that is between 10.00pm and 5.00am. Stations are advised to adhere strictly to this provision of the Code and ensure strict compliance please.” It can be recalled that towards the end of last year, this particular song was reported to have been banned by NBC for lewdness. This led to widespread protests especially across social media. The media adviser of the NBC who spoke at a press briefing then, said, “the song ‘Shoki’ which is a Yoruba slang for ‘quickie’ has spread to other African countries and everybody is singing what they don’t understand, even my two year old daughter came to my room and just started muttering ‘ahh shoki’, it’s a scary experience, so we banned it”. However, hours after, NBC released a press statement, denying placing a ban on the song, and stressing that they only sanctioned a radio station for playing the song during “family time”. “We at the National Broadcasting Commission can confirm there was no such ban. A club version of the song cannot be played on radio. The club version contains vulgar lyrics, which was played around 9am, which is considered as ‘family time’. There is a broadcast code to follow by every broadcast station and this station failed to comply. This said station has been sanctioned for playing a club version during family time. We at the NBC did not ban ‘Shoki’- by Lil Kesh. We simply asked the suitable broadcast version to be played on the radio.… Source: http://naijafussion..com/2015/01/nbc-restricts-airplay-of-hit-song-by.html |
