PoliticsBuhari, Tinubu, Other APC Leaders Map Out Election Strategies by viczing(op): 9:08am On Feb 18, 2015
*Presidential candidate expresses concern over revelations by Captain Koli on Ekiti guber electionOpposition asks Senate not to confirm Obanikoro, demands sack of AdesiyanOnyebuchi Ezigbo in Abuja
Leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC), including the party’s presidential candidate, General Muhamadu Buhari (rtd.); Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, on Tuesday met in Abuja to adopt an action plan to prosecute the March 28 election.Part of the issues tabled during the meeting that lasted almost four hours included measures and strategies to be taken to counter any plot by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to deny the opposition victory at the coming polls.Addressing the leaders and party stakeholder during the interactive sessionat the Late Shehu Musa Yar’adua Centre, Buhari urged the party leaders and faithful not to rest thinking that all is won.The presidential candidate described as “worrisome”.the recent revelations by capt. Sagir Koli about how he, a serving officer at that time, was deployed with other serving officers, some more senior in rank, to work withkey politicians of the PDP to rig the Ekiti State election.“Up till now, there has been no official denial of this most unfortunate event. It makes me wonder, in the circumstances that led to the shifting of the dateof the general election, whether the security services are even now being prepared to play similar roles in the March 28 and April 11 elections,”He maintained that Nigeria’s security services have serious constitutional responsibilities to the people of the nation, adding that their importance to the wellbeing of the country cannot be under estimated.“It is therefore imperative that their leaders must not drag these invaluable institutions into the realm of partisan politics,” he said.Speaking on his campaign experience, the former head of state, said the campaigns have not really been a tea party but that from what he witnessedin all the places, Nigerian people are ready and yearning for change.“We must use the next six weeks to recharge and refocus our goals as we prepare to face the next election. The goal is to win the elections now slated for March 28 and April 11 with a convincing majority. We should aim to achieve a victory that will be beyond dispute and proceed to form the next government and start work on the task of rebuilding our beloved country,” he said. The opposition party also, in a communique issued at the end of the joint leadership meeting resolved to amongst others, call for immediate and necessary disciplinary action for all individuals who were involved in the alleged subversion of democracy in the June 21 Ekiti State governorship election as revealed by the videos released by Sahara Reporters.Former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Tinubu, was in a confidence-boosting mood when he told the cheering party members that APC is getting close to bringing down the ‘Berlin wall’.He described the postponement of the election as a booby trap set for the opposition to protest so that the PDP will find excuse to impose a state of emergency and Interim government.Tinubu said the Osun State experience provided a training ground on how to thwart any attempt at rigging the coming election. He said one of the key resolutions that should be taken at the meeting is thefact that the party will no longer tolerate further interference in INEC affairs or postponement of the election. According to him, PDP cannot take defeat easily and will not surrender power on a plater ofgold. On the plan for the election, Tinubu advised the party leadership to ensure training and re-training of all the agents who will help monitor the elections,so as to equip them properly to carry out their assignment. He also pleaded with the members of the National Assembly not to jettison the struggle no matter what individual may be seeking.“We know that now they have been unable to achieve a violent bobby trap they had set, now they have seen that Nigerians understand their game plan.“Do not under estimate these people as you go back home. Turn yourself into the vigilante of democratic government of this country.“This is tyranny on the majority and tyranny of the people who abuse powerdaily. This government is reckless, unsympathetic to Nigerians. They will find another excuse to postpone the election again but we are going to resist that.“We will resist the use of Temporary Voters’ Cards’ (TVC) and will insist on the use of the Card Readers to stop rigging because we know that the PDP is desperate to undermine the system,” he said. While commenting on the alleged deployment of military to his house, he said it was nothing but an attempt to intimidate the opposition which has failed.Onu said the situation Nigeria is in today calls for unity to deliver it from thechallenges. “Once we continue to be united by the grace of God, we will be producing the next president of the country,” he said.In his welcome address, the National Chairman of the party, Chief John Oyegun, described the meeting as a wide-ranging one intended to interact with the leadership of the party at all levels. He said the party hoped to utilise the six weeks extension to reach out more to Nigerians and to consolidate on the successes already recorded by the party in the on-going campaigns.According to him, the party has done campaign in almost all the states of the federation, except Yobe State.Oyegun said the trust the people have in the APC has become so high that the party must try to do everything possible to realise the aspiration by emerging victorious at the election.“From the events of the last few weeks, it is becoming very clear that the APC is on the verge of coasting to a resounding victory in the presidential elections,” he said.Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State and the Director-General of the Buhari campaign organisation, gave a run-down on the progress recorded so far in the presidential campaigns, providing state by state details of turn-out of supporters.“No one gives power away easily and you have to take power. The president is not ready to give us power in a democratic manner if they continue the way they are doing,” he said.He said Bayelsa was the hallmark of the APC campaign efforts in the South-south.Adding that the campaign in Bayelsa witnessed enthusiastic youths dancing round the venue.Amaechi said one of the strategies being adopted by the APC to ensure victory at the polls is that the leaders have been instructed to monitor votingat their various units and wards on election day.Borno state governor cautioned against complacency, adding that the partyrisked hiccups in its campaign to remove the PDP from office.Governor of Edo state, Adams Oshiomhole, said from all indications, the coming elections will not be a child’s play. Oshiomhole suddenly into his unionist mood by singing labour movement solidarity song.Former governor of Anambra State, Senator Chris Ngige, said the victory train was already on the move and that people will either join the APC or they stay back in their ruins. The strategy meeting were attended by many party leaders, including governors, lawmakers, national and state officers of the party.Meanwhile, the APC listed the individuals to be disciplined as Brigadier General Aliyu Momoh, who it said should be immediately investigated by the military authorities; Hon Minister of Police Affairs, Alhaji Jelili Adesiyanand the former Minister of State for Defence Affairs Senator Musliu Obanikoro. The party also demanded that the two immediately be relieved of his ministerial appointments, while Obanikoro whose name has just been sent to the Senate for confirmation again as a minister c must not be confirmed by the Senate and must be barred henceforth from holding any public office.Other resolutions of the party include: “That in line with the Court of Appeal decision that upheld an earlier judgment of the Sokoto Federal High Court that ruled as illegal, the participation of the military in the electoral process, the military should be kept away from election duties henceforth.“That the rescheduled election dates of March 28 and April 11 remain sacrosanct as the party will not tolerate any further shift.“That the use of the Card Readers for the elections is non-negotiable, as contrary to the misinformation being disseminated that the use of the Card Readers is not synonymous with electronic voting.”

PoliticsLekki/epe Toll Gate Goes If I’m Elected Governor - Jimi Agbaje Says by viczing(op): 8:38am On Feb 13, 2015
LAGOS—Peoples Democratic Party gubernatorial candidate in Lagos State, Mr. Jimi Agbaje, has promised to pull down the Lekki/Epe toll gates, if elected next governor of the state.According to the PDP governorship hopeful, the arrangements behind the project lack transparency and sustainability.Agbaje, who made the promise at a peaceful protest, taggedMarch for freedom, organised by Freedom Group in Lekki, Lagos State, also said that BRT and Lagoslight rail projects were collapsing because the arrangements on ground were not sustainable. He said: “I am here to show solidarity with you on the issue of the toll plaza for which you are marching today and assure you that when we get into office, thesetoll gates will come down; I will demolish all of them.“The public/private partnership, PPP, arrangement behind this project is not transparent. Look at the BRT and Lagos light rail projects, they are collapsing because the PPP arrangements they have on ground are not sustainable.“The light rail which was supposed to have been ready since 2012, is grounded and this is because of vested interests of a few people. The PPP arrangements are skewed to favour only a few people, so for me, I am in solidarity with you and a vote for us is a vote for freedom, a vote to bring down the toll plazas.”In the same vein, coordinator of the march, Gabriel Odu: said: “This march is all about freedom, freedom from tolls, freedom from oppression and freedom from god-fatherism.“We are saying that no more tolls on this road. We want a government that will come in and free us from this and we have seen it in the person of Jimi Agbaje. This is a direct call for freedom for the good people of Lagos.“The March for Freedom chose the Lekki Toll Plaza as the focal point as it is a symbol of oppressive governance. The toll is nothing short of exploitation of defenceless citizens by those who simply feel they can get away with it.”A resident who spoke on the issue said: “This is a peaceful way of expressing ourgrievances over the imposition of toll fees on Lagosians.“What we are saying is that enough is enough. We are tired of being exploited. Even as we speak, they are planning on erecting two more toll gates. This is unfair and oppressive and we are saying enough is enough”.

PoliticsMark Never Met Senators On Tenure Elongation – Ojudu by viczing(op): 8:58pm On Feb 12, 2015
The spokesman for the All Progressives Congress members in the senate,  Senator Babafemi Ojudu, on Thursday,  denied alleging that Senate President, David Mark, secretly met with senators seeking their support for the extension of President Goodluck Jonathan’s tenure beyond May 29, 2015.

Rather,  Ojudu, who issued a statement in Abuja said he merely observed while making a speech at an event that Mark’s  statement which stressed the need to win the insurgency war first before talking about the election,  made him to believe that the elections would be postponed.

He said,”My attention has been drawn to a report in ThisDay newspaper that quoted me to have said that the Senate President Senator David Mark called Senators to a meeting to request  their support for the extension of the regime’s tenure.

“I never said that. What I said was that when we came back from last year’s summer break the president gave a speech where he said, left to him the defeat of Boko Haram should be the nation’s priority  now and not an election.

“And I said from that moment on I began to feel that the elections as fixed for February may not hold since the nation may not have overcome Boko Haram by then.

“This was the only time I mentioned Mark in the close to 30 minutes speech that I gave. I called the reporter Mr Gboyega Adesanmi to complain about this  early today at about 5.00am and he promised to make amends.”
