PoliticsExplain Your Sources Of Wealth Or Forfeit It To The FG — Sen. Ali Ndume Tells We by Visblog(op): 8:37am On Feb 01, 2024
Chief Whip of the Senate, Mohammed Ali Ndume, has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to sign an Executive Order on Unexplained Wealth that will empower anti-graft agencies to go after Nigerians with unexplained wealth.

The Borno South senator also commended the President’s recent action wherein he ordered that all revenues from sale of crude oil be deposited into an account with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Ndume, speaking with newsmen in Abuja on Tuesday, said if President Tinubu is serious about tackling the menace of corruption, he must sign the Executive Order as soon as possible. He said people, especially the political class, must explain their sources of wealth or forfeit the same to the government.

“The next thing now, if President Tinubu wants to fight corruption, would be to sign an Executive Order on Unexplained Wealth in this country. Let all these people explain where they got their money, including myself.People should stop talking about trivialities or personal issues; they should talk about national issues,” Ndume stated.

Anambra Landlord Refunds House Rent To New Tenant On Hearing He's From Ebonyi State

The affected tenant, Ifeanyichukwu Eluu, who's a Pastor shared his experience online. He wrote:

“The last experience I had, getting an apartment in Anambra state wasn't a good one. I had paid 100%

for the apartment to the caretaker, preparing to settle in after signing the necessary tenancy agreement the following day.

"But there was a reconsideration afterwards, we had stayed for a longer time in a hotel. So, we needed to quickly move into the property, of which we informed the caretaker about the move. We rushed to get the basic things to equip the house right away and the same evening, we moved into the house.

"Around 12 midnight, I saw an alert of the exact Money I paid to the caretaker. I called him right away, he said the landlord refunded the Money when he heard we're from Ebonyi state," Abakaliki" as generally refered.

"I felt so insulted, embarrassed, as well, very concerned at such level of discrimination against fellow brothers.

"The last place I finally got a house, the Man asked where I'm from, I told him "Afikpo". Then he said, okay, I know Afikpo, they are partly Abia state, I can consider you, that's how we settled. But I wasn't happy that I had to route through such bias just to get a house to live in

"Please, let the concerned handlers review this in time, hence the maxim "Igbo bu ofu".

Christianity Etc"God Told Me To Do It,” U.S. Pastor Who Stole $1.3 Million From Church Members by Visblog(op): 6:03am On Jan 25, 2024
“God told me to do it,” U.S. pastor who stole $1.3 million from church members

A US-based pastor, Eli Regalado, says it was God who instructed him to st£al over $1.3 million from his Christian community in a cryptocurrency scheme.

Eli and his wife, Kaitlyn, are accused of vi%lating Colorado’s anti-fr@ud, licensing and registration laws after they created and sold their cryptocurrency, known as “INDXcoin,” to Christians in the state.

The couple allegedly told potential investors that the Lord had told them people would become wealthy if they invested, according to a recent press release issued by the state’s division of securities.

However, prosecutors stated that INDXcoin was “practically worthless” in actuality. Investors lost millions of dollars while the Regalados lived lavishly, TheGuardian reports.

In a video statement posted on INDXcoin website, Eli admitted that the pair squandered $1.3 million raised through cryptocurrency.

“The charges are that me and Kaitlyn pocketed $1.3m. I just wanted to come out and say those charges are true.

A few hundred thousand dollars went to a home remodel the Lord told us to do. We took God at his word and sold a cryptocurrency with no clear exit,” he said.

Regalado added that the couple still believes that God will “work a miracle in the financial sector”.

INDXcoin raised around $3.2 million from more than 300 people between June 2022 and April 2023. The Regalados spent at least $1.3 million, or more than half, on personal luxury goods such as jewellery, an au pair, and a costly house improvement project.

The Regalados also collected at least $290,000 for their online-only church, Victorious Grace Church, despite the fact that it has no physical location.

The Regalados also have no expertise with cryptocurrency. A third-party auditor also reported serious technical issues with the INDXcoin code, but the Regalados continued to promote the cryptocurrency as a low-risk, high-reward solution.

PoliticsPresident Bola Tinubu Is Reportedly Facing Increased Pressure To Remove His Chie by Visblog(op): 5:15pm On Jan 23, 2024
President Bola Tinubu is reportedly facing increased pressure to remove his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, following new allegations implicating him in a fresh scandal.

Sources suggest that Gbajabiamila is under scrutiny for his alleged involvement in corrupt practices, adding to the challenges confronting the president’s administration.

The recent scandal revolves around Gbajabiamila’s purported role as one of the beneficiaries of corruption within the Assets Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) during Ahmed Kuru’s tenure.

According to a report by Special Investigator Jim Obazee, Gbajabiamila is accused of benefiting from Kuru’s largesse, particularly in the form of Ikoyi properties, during his tenure as the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

The report further suggests that Gbajabiamila was crucial in ensuring Kuru’s continued leadership at AMCON.

According to Sahara Reporters, the revelation has sparked calls for immediate action, with mounting pressure on President Tinubu to remove Gbajabiamila from his position as Chief of Staff.

“President Bola Tinubu is under pressure from some political associates, whom Kuru has soiled their white robes, including the Hon Femi Gbajabiamila (President’s Chief of Staff), who has benefitted from Ahmed Kuru’s largesse of Ikoyi properties from his days as Speaker of the House of Representatives,” a source in Aso Rock said.

The source noted, “Gbaja had persistently blocked Ahmed Kuru’s removal as AMCON’s Chief Executive after about nine years in office, over two terms of a democratically elected President.”

An independent investigator quoted in the report also said: “It is clear that the only organ of government that has resources for criminal and forensic investigation of economic and financial crimes is the EFCC.

“The Jim Obazee Special Investigating team has only managed to point to areas of infractions but has not succeeded in forensic tracing and following of the money.

“It can only be strategic that the government hand all the cases over to the EFCC, remove Ahmed Kuru from office and switch around a few Directors in the Central Bank who, without doubt, may be complicit with Godwin Emefiele in this criminal conduct.

“Otherwise, with those actors in positions, they will continue to obstruct the investigation. You can see the limitations of the Presidential Special Investigators in the CBN establishment.

“Otherwise, Yemi Cardoso (incumbent CBN Governor) will remain in an invisible walled hostage environment of Emefiele’s network in the CBN, as Gbaja has surrounded the President with whispers of half-truths.”

PoliticsRECAP: How It Went Down At The Supreme Court Yesterday For 8 States by Visblog(op): 3:19pm On Jan 13, 2024
RECAP: How It Went Down At The Supreme Court Yesterday For 8 States

IN SUMMARY:

1. LAGOS = APC (Gov. Sanwo-Olu Returned)

2. BAUCHI = PDP (Gov. Bala Mohammed Returned)

3. KANO = NNPP (Gov. Abba Yusuf Returned)

4. ZAMFARA = PDP (Gov. Dauda Lawal Returned)

5. EBONYI = APC (Gov. Francis Nwifuru Returned)

6. PLATEAU = PDP (Gov. Caleb Mutfwang Returned)

7. ABIA = LP (Gov. Alex Otti Returned)

8. CROSS RIVERS = APC (Gov. Bassey Otu Returned)

APC = 3

PDP = 3

NNPP = 1

LP = 1.

JUDGEMENTS:

1. LAGOS STATE:

The apex court started the day with the judgement on Lagos State where the duo of Labour Party and PDP's appeals were dismissed in favour of the incumbent Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu making the ruling APC to retain the nation's economic capital.

The Labour Party's appeal which was hinged on non qualification because of dual citizenship, the Apex court ruled that: "There is no provision in the Constitution that strips a Nigerian by birth of his citizenship on account of acquiring the citizenship of another country"

While the PDP's appeal was thrown out due to the time frame of the 180 days to determine the case. “This appeal is devoid of any merit, and it is accordingly dismissed" the court ruled.

2. BAUCHI STATE OF:

In Bauchi State, the petitioners appealed to the Supreme Court to find out "Whether the lower court properly appraised relevant provisions of the Electoral Act 2022" having lost at both tribunal and Appeal Courts.

Justice Ibrahim Saulawa who read the lead judgement said the main issues in the appeal centre on allegations of electoral malpractices against Nigeria’s electoral commission, INEC, and Governor Mohammed.

The petitioner, according to the Supreme Court, was unable to show at the tribunal the anomaly such as improper filing of election results during the election and how it substantially affected the outcome of the 18 March 2023 poll, adding that the appellant was unable to discharge the burden of proof as required of him by the law ruling that ”On the basis of the findings, having effectively resolved all the issues against the appellant, the appeal is apparently devoid of merit. The judgement of the Court of Appeal is hereby affirmed. The appeal is dismissed.”

3. KANO STATE:

We headed to Kano State where the incumbent Governor of the NNPP had lost both the tribunal and appeal courts as he sought refuge at the Supreme Court.

Justice John Okoro who read the lead judgement said the suit was predicated on alleged forgery of NNPP membership card by Governor Yusuf, and votes manipulation by INEC in favour of the governor.

Ruling on the vote manipulation leading to the deduction of 165,616 votes from the NNPP, Justice Okoro said it was based on the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022, however, vying off from that track, Justice Okoro said the provision does not regulate actions at the polling units, insisting that it must be proven that a ballot paper was not the ones deployed for the conduct of the election querying , “What is the effect of a ballot paper not having the marks by the Electoral commission?”

In his ruling, he ruled that: “A ballot paper that does not bear INEC mark is not invalid by all purposess" Continuing, he ruled further:

“There is no proof that the said ballot papers were not the one used at the election. Thus the decision of the Court of Appeal affirming the decision of the tribunal ought to be set aside,.

“Finally, the lower court wrongly misconstrued its evaluation of the ballot papers. This amounts to perversion. Accordingly, all the ballot papers are restored to Governor Yusuf."

On the issue of Governor Yusuf’s membership of the NNPP, Justice Okoro ruled held that the issue of nomination is exclusively the internal affairs of a political party. Therefore, it is not justiceable noting that Section 177 (c) of the Constitution only frowns on independent candidate and nothing more while lampooning the lower courts that “It is absurd to contend that an individual contested and won an election on the platform of a party, only for someone else to wake up and challenge the winner’s membership of the party.

"The court below erred in law by investigating the governor’s membership of the NNPP.

"In conclusion, judges should be more meticulous" said Justice Okoro.

“There is merit in this appeal. And the appeal is hereby allowed. The appellant won majority of lawful votes.

“The judgement of the lower Court voiding the election of the Appellant is hereby set aside,” Justice Okoro ruled.

4. ZAMFARA STATE:

Immediately after the Kano State governorship appeal judgement was given, that of Zamfara State was called by the court and Justice Emmanuel Agim read the lead judgement.

In Zamfara State, the state election petition tribunal had upheld the election of the governor while that of the appeal court set it aside prompting the governor to seek further intervention at the Supreme Court.

Justice Agim reviewed the evidence of the parties involved and in his review said the appellant, Bello Matawalle of the APC alleged that Governor Dauda Lawal of the PDP did not win the majority of lawful votes cast at the 18 March election.

“What was the evidence led to prove the allegation made by the petitioner?” Justice Agim asks.

Continuing, the Judge ruled that Mr. Matawalle of the APC was unable to prove his allegations of over voting beyond every reasonable doubt.

“What is needed to prove the petition is the duplicate copy of the results which the petitioner failed to provide,” ruled Justice Agim.

“The allegation of over-voting failed because INEC did not provide the voter register, polling unit officer report, and testimony of people who were present at the polling unit,” the judge ruled further

Justice Agim remarked that BVAS machines on their own cannot establish electoral malpractices.

“Sufficient evidence was not adduced by the petitioner.

“This court is of the view that the tribunal was right. The judgement of the Court of Appeal was perverse, because the petitioner (Mr Matawalle) failed woefully to prove his allegations,” the judge declared.

“The decision of the Court of Appeal has no evidential foundation.

“The judgement of the Court of Appeal delivered in November is set aside. The order setting aside the appellant’s election is set aside. And the election of the Appellant is upheld. Justice Agim ruled.

5. EBONYI STATE:

The Ebonyi State Governorship Appeal at the Supreme Court was simple and straightforward as the judges cited precedents of the Supreme court.

Justice Tijjani Abubakar read the lead judgement.

Justice Abubakar traced the history of the dispute after the 18 March governorship election in Ebonyi State as the sponsorship of the governor by the APC and non compliance of the electoral act.

Ruling on the matter, Justice Abubakar noted:

"The issue revolves around the jurisdiction of the lower court. The contention is that Governor Nwifuru was not qualified to contest the election.”

"Section 177 of the Constitution convers the criteria for contesting governorship election of a state.

" Precedents set by the Supreme Court repeatedly ask the tribunal to refrain from the issue of membership of a party.

"The end result in this appeal is that the appellant failed to provide any evidence to establish the allegation of non-compliance with the Electoral Act.

“The appellant appeal is bound to fall like a pack of cards.

“This appeal is unmeritorious. It is therefore dismissed. The judgement of the Court of Appeal is affirmed,” Justice Abubakar ruled.

6. PLATEAU STATE:

By the results declared by the INEC, Governor Caleb Mutfwang of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) scored 525,299 votes to beat the All Progressives Congress candidate, Nentawe Yilwatda, who garnered 481,370 votes during the 18 March governorship poll in Plateau State.

The governor’s election was upheld by the Plateau State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal in Jos, the state capital.

However, the Court of Appeal in Abuja overturned the victory, necessitating Mr Mutfwang’s appeal at the Supreme Court.

Justice Emmanuel Agim read the lead judgement.

In his ruling, Justice Agim noted the APC’s contention that the appellant was not qualified to contest the election. The APC says Governor Mutfwang’s nomination as a candidate and his election were invalid by virtue of non-compliance with the electoral law.

The Court of Appeal held that the primary election that produced Governor Mutfwang as the PDP’s candidate and his subsequent nomination to INEC were invalid. The party said he was not qualified to be Governor of Plateau State, the justice notes in his review of the decision of the appellate court sacking Mr Mutfwang.

“We have held in a plethora of cases that the sponsorship of candidate for election is an internal affair of a political party.

“The court of appeal lacks the jurisdiction to determine the validity of the candidacy of the PDP,” Justice Agim held.

"Mr Yilwatda of the APC has no right to challenge the emergence of Governor Mutfwang as a ticket-holder of the PDP, the justice Agim further ruled.

The Court of Appeal had anchored its decision sacking the governor on the alleged failure of the PDP to comply with an order of the Plateau State High Court to conduct fresh congresses before holding primary elections for nomination of its candidates for the 2023 general elections

But the Supreme Court justice said the order of the High Court had nothing to do with the the party’s power to conduct primaries for the PDP as it did to nominate Governor Mutfwang as its candidate for the governorship election.

The justice ruled that despite that, there is evidence showing that the order of the Plateau State High Court was complied with by the party.

"Can the tribunal and the Court of Appeal determine the validity of the nomination of a candidate? The Judge asked.

"The order of the High Court of Plateau State had nothing to do with powe of NEC of the PDP; it is a jurisdictional matter" the justice added.

"The legal profession should wake up," the justice says, adding that, "for this reason, this appeal is allowed. The judgement of the Court of Appeal is set aside, inclusive of the orders made therein."

"The judgement of the tribunal is restored. The election of the governor is further restored,” Justice Agim declared.

In his consenting opinion, Justice Okoro said “My only worry is that a lot of people have suffered as a result of the Court of Appeal’s decision. It was absolutely wrong. The appeal is allowed.”

Justices Uwani Abba-Aji, and Helen Ogunwumiju also concured with the lead judgement.

“It was very wrong for the Court of Appeal to go into the issue of party congresses. To make make matters worse, the party challenging the issue is another political party,” Justice Helen Ogunwumiju commented.

She added that the Court of Appeal made a fundamental error by shifting the burden of proof on Governor Mutfwang.

Justice Adamu Jauro equally agreed with the judgement.

7. ABIA STATE:

Justice Uwani Abba-Aji read the lead judgement.

In his reviews, Justice Uwani noted that the petitioner’s grouse was that Governor Otti was not a member of the Labour Party as of the time he vied and won the Abia State Governorship Election.

In delivering his judgement, the judge remarked that by the nature of case, it ought not to have been brought to the Supreme Court owning to the plethora of decided cases on the same issue.

"In fact, this appeal ought not to have come to the Supreme Court. This is a pre-election matter that should have been litigated at the Federal High Court. We have taken this position in several cases.

“Election petition does not permit piecemeal filing of processes,

"This appeal lacks merit and it is hereby dismissed. The election of the Governor of Abia State is affirmed" Justice Abba-Aji held.

Continuing, Justice Abba-Aji equally read the lead judgement on the APC's petition against the Governor of Abia.

Ikechi Emenike, the APC’s governorship candidate contested the victory of Governor Otti at the polls.

"The tribunal and Court of Appeal dismissed Mr Emenike’s appeal" the Justice recalled.

“The appeal is unmeritorious and vexatious. It is accordingly dismissed,” Justice Abba-Aji says.

She added: “There is no need to subvert the political will of the people who voted overwhelmingly for the governor.

“There is no merit in this appeal. I affirm the concurrent findings of the lower courts.”

Justice Helen Ogunwumiju agreed with the lead decision.

8. CROSS RIVERS STATE:

Justice Helen Ogunwumiju read the lead decision on Cross River State governorship election appeal.

Reviewing the the lower court’s decisions, Justice Helen noted that the appeal was centred on the judgement of the Cross River State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal and the Court of Appeal which the appeal filed by the candidate of the PDP, Sandy Onor, a professor, challenging Governor Otu’s election victory.

Justice Ogunwumiju reviewed the pieces of evidence that were canvassed before the court.

Delivering her ruling', “Section 40 of the constitution guarantees the freedom of association; it is an intrinsic human rights which cannot be denied. The defection of Governor Otu from the PDP to the APC is of no consequence,” the Justice ruled.

Continuing, “No evidence was led by the appellant to show that Governor Otu forged his secondary school certificate. The appellant’s case isnonsensical,” Justice Ogunwumiju further ruled.

“The appeal is a waste of judicial time. It is hereby dismissed. Parties are to bear their respective costs,” Justice Ogunwumiju ruled.

Justices Uwani Abba-Aji, Adamu Jauro, Emmanuel Agim, and John Okoro agreed with the lead decision.

PoliticsThe Supreme Court Has Set Aside The Lower Courts' Decisions Sacking The Kano Sta by Visblog(op): 1:33pm On Jan 12, 2024
The Supreme Court has set aside the lower courts' decisions sacking the Kano state Governor, Yusuff Abba.

The tribunal had set aside Governor Abba Yusuf of the New Nigeria Peoples Party victory after declaring 165,663 of his votes invalid. The tribunal held that the deducted votes were from ballot papers that were neither stamped nor signed.

He then approached the appeal court for redress. The appeal court upheld the tribunal's decision and faulted the lower court for not disqualifying the governor.

The Supreme Court has, however, on Friday, reinstated the governor.

Arewa Youth Forum Reject Planned Waec CBT Exams

The Arewa Youth Consultative Forum has called for the cancellation of the proposed computer-based test format in the forthcoming West African Senior School Certificate Examinations in the country.

According to the forum, such a mode of examination, if allowed, will result in mass failure for students, particularly in rural areas of northern states where computer skills are scarce or completely absent.

The National President of AYCF, Yerima Shettima, in a statement released in Kaduna on Friday, asserted that the CBT exams should have been optional, allowing candidates to choose between the traditional pen-and-paper format and the computer-based approach.

This, he argued, would have allowed students to opt for the format they were most comfortable with and capable of attempting successfully.

Shettima added that research conducted by the Forum in selected northern states such as Zamfara, Jigawa, Taraba, Adamawa, Nasarawa, and Plateau, revealed that the CBT exams had consistently led to misleading failure rates among students attending public schools, where computer skills were often not taught.

He stated, “Even the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board CBT exams have placed underprivileged students in a predicament as they struggle to answer questions in a format they are unfamiliar with.

“Many students who failed the CBT-based JAMB exams last year argued that their failures were a result of systemic failures, including insufficient facilities or network failures during the exams. Additionally, a lack of proper and adequate computer skills, coupled with outdated desktop computers that are not properly maintained by CBT centers further exacerbate the situation.”

EducationWhat Is Social Capital? Something To Learn In 2024 And Beyond. by Visblog(op): 7:48am On Jan 03, 2024
The term social capital refers to a positive product of human interaction. The positive outcome may be tangible or intangible and may include favors, useful information, innovative ideas, and future opportunities. Social capital is not held by an individual, but instead appears in the potential between social network connections between individuals.

There is something in life called "SOCIAL CAPITAL." The people you know; the people who know you and how they know you.

Quite unfortunately, people think or behave like social capital is only needed on weddings, urgent issues, crisis and burials. That is why you see someone will not have contacted you in ten years but out of the blue they are sending you a message, "Hello so and so, long time. between, next Sunday is my pre-wedding. I need your support."

Social capital is not built overnight; it is reciprocal and does not need money (especially in this virtually connected world) to build. It just needs being sensitive that people have emotions and that you can't sneak into their lives only when you need help.

Social capital is massively important and when built and used correctly, it can make a very big difference to one's quality of life. It can save you money, make you money, get you a better job, make things easier and safer, it can save you from prison, or save your life: it can save you time and effort, and make life more enjoyable and productive.

As we progress through the year, please learn to connect with people in your circles. Check on people, send someone a birthday message, check their timelines and comment something positive and inspirational. Pick your phone and call someone, or text them. It could be your relative, your colleague, your former schoolmate, a former or current boss, your CEO, your parents etc.

Creating a connection with people is important for building your social capital. And even if they don't respond, at least keep in touch and don't just reach out when you are in need.

Most importantly, respect everyone no matter their status in life and be there when others need you. Be a solution, an encouragement and inspiration. Avoid being a leech, a user or nagger. Just be a nice person who in a calculated way stays in touch with people and brings joy, encouragement and hope.

The most important asset you have in life is not your job, money or title; its people. Your network is your net worth!

vitoria é certa! Trust God and Trust The Process.

BusinessP’harcourt Refinery Begins Test-run, Rivers, 11 Others Get Supply Soon by Visblog(op): 10:03am On Jan 02, 2024
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has commenced the supply of crude oil for the test-running of the Port Harcourt Refining Company Limited, the NNPCL officials said on Sunday.

Oil marketers confirmed the development and stated that the plant would supply refined Premium Motor Spirit, popularly called petrol, Automotive Gas Oil, otherwise known as diesel, as well as other products to 12 states including Abia, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Delta, among others.

The NNPCL stated that the ongoing test-running of the plant would be completed shortly, adding that commercial production of refined products would also begin shortly.

This came as experts and downstream operators stated that though the cost of refined products would reduce once the Port Harcourt and Dangote refineries start pumping out products, it would not lead to a massive price crash.

On December 21, 2023, the Federal Government announced the mechanical completion of rehabilitation work on the Area-5 Plant of the Port Harcourt Refining Company in Rivers State.

It said the first phase of the plant had been completed, as the facility would start refining 60,000 barrels of crude oil daily after the Christmas break.

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, had stated that the first phase of the PHRC was completed on December 20, 2023, adding that refined products’ production would commence after the Yuletide.

“This is to announce to Nigerians that in fulfilment of our pledge to complete phase one of the Port Harcourt refinery by the end of 2023, and the subsequent streaming of phase two in 2024, we happily announce the mechanical completion of flare start-up on December 20, 2023.

“This heralds the commencement of the production of petroleum products after the Christmas break. We want to thank Nigerians for their patience and trust in the NNPC to deliver on our promise and mandate in the rehabilitation of our refineries,” the minister stated.

When contacted on Sunday to state whether the plant had started producing refined products as projected by the minister, the Chief Corporate Communications Officer, NNPCL, Olufemi Soneye, said crude oil was being supplied to the facility.

He said the refinery was being test-run, as this was in line with international best practice, and assured Nigerians that the plant would commence commercial production of refined products production shortly

“We’ve successfully completed the mechanical phase of the PH refinery Area 5 plant, installing all vital components. Licensor inspection has been done and catalysts delivered.

“Now, industry-based testing remains, focusing on leaks, air, line blowing, flushing, drying, steam out, calibration, plant inerting, and then hydrocarbon (crude oil) introduction.

“While we share the optimism, adherence to global best practices is crucial. Testing will conclude shortly, ensuring the refinery’s efficient operation. Production should commence shortly,” he stated.

Former Speaker Of House Of Representatives, Ghali Na’Abba Is Dead

Details of his death are sketchy, but Na’Abba, who was Speaker of the House between 1999 and 2003, reportedly passed away on Wednesday morning.

There are reports that he died at a hospital in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

Ghali Umar Na’Abba CFR was born into the family of Alhaji Umar Na’Abba, a businessman in Tudun Wada, Kano City, Kano Municipal Local Government on 27 September, 1958.

The executive arm of government, particularly the presidency, did not approve of his leadership.

Consequently, greater part of Na’Abba's tenure witnessed grand plots by the Presidency to oust him, so as to replace him with a compromising legislator. This severed the relationship between the House and the Presidency.

He survived till the end of his four-year tenure on June 3, 2003. In August 2002, the House gave then President Olusegun Obasanjo an ultimatum to either resign or face impeachment action.

As speaker, Na’Abba said the House would not withdraw the resolution. Na'Abba was the leader of the impeachment movement. It was reported that Obasanjo gave members of the House inducements to bring charges against Na'Abba.

In April 2003, he sought a re-election into the House of Representatives on the platform of he Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The Presidency that brazenly lost the battle of removing him as Speaker extended the animosity to his re-election bid.

Christianity EtcShi’ites Attend Christmas Service In Zaria, Advocate Unity by Visblog(op): 5:55am On Dec 27, 2023
Shi’ites, an Islamic group, joined Christians at a Christmas Service at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Samaru, Zaria, Kaduna State on Monday to strengthen religious harmony and unity between religious groups.

Leader of the Shi’ite group, Prof. Isah-Hassan Mshelgaru, said it acknowledged Christmas as a day for festivities, friendliness and unity.

He added that joining Christian faithful as they marked Christmas was meant to renew hope for divine unity among Muslims, Christians and other religions.

Mshelgaru said the visit to the church by the group for Christmas was to strengthen relationship between the two faith groups.

He noted that Islam and Christianity were revered faiths with more than 90 per cent of Nigeria’s population as adherents.

“When other faithful unite with the two faith groups, it means the whole of Nigerian is united,’’ he said.

Speaking on the impact of the visit, Mshelgaru said as a group, it started visits to churches more than 25 years ago and since then there had been improved understanding between the group and Christians.

“The visit has reduced the fears and some animosities between the two faith groups. They (Christians) are now open to us; we share sentiments and problems together.

“The regular exchange of visits has bridged the gaps between us,’’ he said.

Earlier, the parish priest, Most Rev. Isak Augustine, commended the Islamic group for the visit and urged the group for more visits to strengthen religious harmony and unity.

He prayed for the peace of God to come into Nigeria and to salvage the country from myriad socio-economic challenges.

The Shi’ite group later presented gifts to the Catholic Church.

Christianity EtcSame-sex Couples: Pope Was Misquoted By Enemies Of D Church - Archbishop Kaigama by Visblog(op): 6:29pm On Dec 26, 2023
The Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Ignatius Kaigama, says media reports that Pope Francis approved blessings for same gender couples were untrue.

Kaigama made the clarification in his homily during the Christmas Mass he conducted at Our Lady Queen of Nigeria Catholic Pro-Cathedral in Abuja on Monday.

He described the report as mischievous disinformation and part of a deliberately orchestrated falsehood by the enemies of the Catholic Church in order to cause confusion among its members.

Kaigama stated, “For the avoidance of doubt, the Pope did not, and will never approve blessings for any intending same gender couples because the position of the Church on this is very clear and has not changed.

“I am the representative of the Pope here, so if there is any such approval or directive, I will be the first to know and relay the message to the brethren.

“The media reports on this issue is the handiwork of the enemies of the Church, who have been busy spending millions of dollars to bring down the Church, but to no avail because they cannot succeed.”

He admonished Christians not to despair or allow their faith to be shaken by the wanton attacks against the Church by its enemies, adding that evil could never prevail over good, just as darkness cannot overcome light.

Speaking on the insecurity across the country, Kaigama urged Christians to remain steadfast in their faith and prayers, stressing that before long, the challenge would become a thing of the past.

The cleric called on the perpetrators of crime, especially the incessant kidnapping of Catholic priests, to desist from such so as to avoid the wrath of God.

He also prayed for Nigeria and its leaders to succeed, while urging the Federal Government to step up security measures to stem the tide of crime in the country and rein in the outlaws.

Kaigama said Christmas signified a season of peace, love, care, change and new birth in the lives of all Christians who must endeavour to emulate Christ by observing the identified principles.

Men don’t like ‘overly successful’ women –
Nollywood actress, Iniobong Edo

“Some men are threatened by women’s strength. Because we can come off as if we are doing too much. First of all, you’re a woman, you’re beautiful, you’re here and there…

“Naturally, men want to see you [women] not so overly successful just so that they can pull you around, you can be the woman, cook and clean and do all the basic things that they’ve grown up to know is expected of women.

“So when you get too strong, it’s almost like you’re competing with their ego. But the truth is, like I always say, I like to be the queen. I’m not a woman who is looking to subdue any man or ride over any man.

“No matter how successful I get, I don’t think I would like to have a man that I am lording over. Then what is the beauty of it? I mean, the beauty of it is me walking beside my man and he giving me instructions and protecting me.”

Just In: CBN reportedly directs banks to disregard initial ban on cryptocurrency

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has directed banks to disregard the initial ban on cryptocurrency which the apex bank announced two years ago, Peoples Gazette is reporting.

Haruna Mustapha, CBN’s director of financial policy and regulation, disclosed this in a circular on Friday.

The apex bank said it is now providing guidelines and regulations for banks with regard to managing cryptocurrency in line with global trends to avoid its misuse, while urging banks to comply with the guidelines and regulations.

The statementreads: “The CBN in February 2021 issued a circular restricting banks and other financial institutions from operating accounts for cryptocurrency service providers in view of the money laundering and terrorism financing (ML/TF) risks and vulnerabilities inherent in their operations as well as the absence of regulations and consumer protection measures.

However, current trends globally have shown that there is need to regulate the activities of virtual assets service providers (VASPs) which include cryptocurrencies and crypto assets. Following this development, the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) in 2018 also updated its Recommendation 15 to require VASPS to be regulated to prevent misuse of virtual assets for ML/TF/PF.

Furthermore, Section 30 of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022 recognizes VASPs as part of the definition of a financial institution. In addition, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in May 2022 issued Rules on Issuance, Offering and Custody of Digital Assets and VASPS to provide a regulatory framework for their operations in Nigeria.

In view of the foregoing, the CB hereby issues this Guidelines to provide guidance to financial institutions under its regulatory purview in respect of their banking relationship with VASPs in Nigeria.

The Guidelines supersedes the CBN's circulars referenced FPR/ DIR/GEN/CIR/06/010 of January 12, 2017 and BSD/DIR/PUB/LAB/ 014/001 of February 5, 2021 on the subject. However, banks and other financial institutions are still prohibited from holding, trading and/or transacting in virtual currencies on their own account.

Accordingly, all banks and other financial institutions are hereby required to immediately comply with the provisions of the Guidelines."

PoliticsRivers Crisis: Fubara Wanted To Resign Over Rift With Wike – Niger Delta Leader, by Visblog(op): 12:59pm On Dec 17, 2023
A former spokesperson for the Pan-Niger Delta Forum, PANDEF, Anabs Sara-Igbe, on Saturday said Governor Sim Fubara of Rivers State wanted to resign from his position due to the face-off with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike.

Sara-Igbe said the intervention of some chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, stopped Fubara from resigning.

The National Coordinator, South-South Leadership Forum, said Fubara was not fully in control of Rivers State funds.

Speaking with newsmen, Sara-Igbe said the governor is having difficulties running the state.

According to Sara-Igbe: “The money coming from the Federation Account, Wike tied the money to one project or the other.

“So, when the money comes, it goes to the banks and they collect theirs from it and pay the contractors.

“Of course, we didn’t even know the cost of the contracts, so when this governor felt, ‘how will I run a government when I don’t have the resources’, the minister became hostile to the governor and the governor said ‘okay, let me resign if that is the case’. The PDP elders prevailed on him not to resign, thinking it would be messy.”

Wike and Fubara have been at loggerheads, which has plunged the state into crisis.

Twenty-seven lawmakers in the state had dumped the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for the All Progressives Congress, APC, due to the rift.

Several commissioners have also resigned their positions due to the face-off between Wike and Fubara.
