Crime / Tenant Breaks Bottle On Landlord's Head, Lands In Court by vivianblog(f): 4:53pm On Dec 10, 2015
A 46-year-old man, Akeem Okuniyi, has been charged before a Surulere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State for allegedly assaulting his landlord, Alhaji Musbau Akani.

The accused, who lives at No. 18, Obanta Street, Orile Iganmu, assaulted his landlord, Musbau Akani, when he went to ask for his rent.

It was gathered that an argument ensued between the duo during which the accused assaulted him by breaking a bottle on his landlord's head and also stabbed him on the right hand.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs M.I Dan-Oni, ruling on the bail application of the accused, granted him bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like sum.

The magistrate said that the surety should provide evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State government and his address must be verified by the court.

The case was adjourned till December 14 for further hearing.

Politics / Lagos Government Bans Street Carnivals, Processions During Yuletide by vivianblog(f): 7:17pm On Dec 09, 2015
As parts of efforts to protect lives and property in Lagos State and to fight against terror attacks, the state government has banned street carnivals and public processions.

The ban, according to the Commissioner of Police in the state, Fatai Owoseni, is also to prevent any act of lawlessness or violence during the Yuletide.

Owoseni said this shortly after the State Security Council meeting held in Alausa area of the state.

The Lagos police boss also reiterated the ban on bangers and other fireworks during and after the Yuletide.

Owoseni also allayed the fears that the state is under any security threat, pointing out that the measures were to ensure security of lives and properties.

The police boss said: “We all know that Christmas and New Year are fast approaching. If we look at all we have on ground in terms of strategy and in terms of logistics, the council is convinced and we are reassuring the people of Lagos that Yuletide would be celebrated without hindrance."

He also added that “most importantly, we’ve also looked and considered some of the intelligence reports that are coming from different people. We feel that we should tell members of the public that with all the situations that are on ground now, carnivals and public processions would not be allowed.

“If anybody should hold a town hall meeting or whatever meeting, they should be limited to the venue or the enclosure in which the meeting is taking place," Owoseni said.

Politics / Contract Scam: House Summons Amaechi, 4 Ex-pdp Chiefs by vivianblog(f): 12:57pm On Dec 07, 2015
The Minister for Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi and four other former chairmen of the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) have been summoned by the House of Representatives ad-hoc Committee on Rail Transport Contracts for alleged N1 trillion rail contracts scam.

Among the invitees are three former chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and a former chairman and board member of the corporation. The invitees whose names were given as: Bamanga Tukur, Abubakar Kawu Baraje, Haliru Bello and Amb. Ladan Shuni, are expected to appear before the House on Thursday, December 10.

The Sun reports that the invited former chairmen of NRC are expected to give detailed accounts of their chairmanship tenure in the period under review.

Speaking on the development, the committee chairmen, Hon. Ehiozuwa Johnson Agbonayinma (PDP, Edo), said the probe is not aimed at witch-hunting anybody, but to show to Nigerians how their tax monies are being used.

“In the court of law you are innocent until proven guilty. We will adhere to fair hearing, but anyone found wanting, will be exposed. This Eighth National Assembly is committed to putting Nigeria first in legislative duties as well performing oversight function.

“Like I said earlier, this rail contract probe is not primarily designed to rubbish anybody, but we must unearth how every kobo was spent and let Nigerians know how it was spent.

“The first investigative hearing starts on Thursday and we’ve invited all stakeholders to come and tell us all they know on this matter. The Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, was also invited to tell us all he knows though he just assumed office, but you know government is a continuum,” Agbonayinma said.

Recall that the House on October 14 directed its Committee on Transport to investigate probe contracts awarded for the rehabilitation of rail tracks, standard gauge, bridges, coaches, wagons and locomotives between 2010 and 2014.

The directive was the outcome of the motion move by Hon. Solomon Ahwinawhi (PDP/Delta) titled: “Need to investigate the Ministry of Transport and the Nigeria Railway Corporation, NRC, on the award of contracts for rehabilitation of railway tracks, maintenance of bridges and procurement/rehabilitation of coaches and locomotives from 2010-2014.

The lawmaker said his curiosity was stirred up following the performance level of the 463km Port Harcourt-Makurdi rail track rehabilitation of the Eastern line with N19, 963, 752, 330, out of which NRC had paid N4, 017, 054, 841, while SURE-P paid N5, 594, 021, 377. He said only about 3km of ballast has been completed with 400km left undone and the total money disbursed so far is N9, 611, 076, 218.

“The Abuja-Kaduna rail project had 841 million US dollars as the project cost, out of which the China EXIM Bank provided a loan of $500 million with about 25 percent of the project completed, when the entire project was envisaged to have been completed in 2014,” Ahwinawhi said.

The Delta representative further stated that the Lagos-Jebba track rehabilitation project was awarded at the cost of N12, 293, 390, adding that the money so far paid for the contract is N11, 699, 999,218, without any noticeable work done. He said the same situation goes for Jebba-Kano.

The Nigerian Railway Corporation started in 1898, when the first railroad in the country was built by the British colonial government. The Lagos Government Railway and the Baro-Kano Railway were amalgamated on October 3, 1912, commencing a nationwide rail service under the name Government Department of Railways.

The country is still striving to make railway service one of its effective means of transportation, especially in states like Lagos and Abuja were you have frustrating gridlock traffic.

President Muhammadu Buhari in one of his most recent trip aside the country was said to have scheduled a meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping as a follow up from their discussion which took place on the side-lines of the United Nations General Assembly meeting in November in New York. The crux of the said meeting was how to set up an ultra modem railway service in the country.

Politics / Abacha Loot: Serap’s Call For My Probe Politically Sponsored – Okonjo-iweala by vivianblog(f): 4:14pm On Dec 01, 2015
A former Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has noted that the call by Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, for her probe over the management of the Abacha loot is a politically sponsored campaign to serve an agenda.

According to a statement issued yesterday by the ex-Minister’s Media Adviser, Paul Nwachukwu, “It is curious that SERAP, ignoring more worthy issues, decided to embark on this fishing expedition of a 10 year old process that was handled in an exemplary and transparent fashion. This shows that neither the organization nor its charges should be taken seriously.

“Even though SERAP says its allegations were based on a World Bank statement, it neglected to tell the world that the same World Bank actively collaborated with the Federal Ministry of Finance on a 2006 field report which analyzed how the repatriated funds were used.”
Nwabuikwu recalled that, “as part of the repatriation process, the Swiss government requested and the Nigerian government under President Obasanjo agreed that the World Bank should monitor the use of the repatriated Abacha funds.

“The field survey, released in 2006, is titled ‘Utilization of Repatriated Abacha loot: Results of the Field Monitoring Exercise’. It shows that specific funds were indeed transparently programmed and used to boost the budgets of specific target ministries in 2004 and 2005.”

While admitting that Civil Society Organisation, CSOs, play critical roles in ensuring transparent management of public funds globally, the Media Aide alleged that SERAP had turned itself into a tool in the hands of corrupt interests.

“To say the obvious, civil society groups play a very important role in putting positive pressure on government to remain focused on good governance in order to ensure that clear and measurable results are achieved. No country can manage governance to global standards without civil society groups. And Nigeria is no exception. Nigeria has many credible advocacy groups doing important work in many areas.
“It is therefore sad that SERAP which has made other false allegations against Okonjo-Iweala is hiding under the hallowed umbrella of civil society while acting as a tool for reprehensible, corrupt vested interests,” he said.

Nwabuikwu went on to declare that, “No amount of sponsored propaganda can conceal the fact that the implementation of the agreement with the Swiss government was done transparently and the report was publicly issued. The entire process was properly managed and reviewed with the help of reputable international organizations.”
