Politics / NNPC Kick-starts Retail Outlets Expansion Project - Press Release by vivianblog(f): 4:41pm On Jan 17, 2016

Full TEXT:
In a deft move designed to ensure efficient distribution and country-wide penetration of petroleum products, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has commenced nationwide consultation with stakeholders aimed at drumming support for the planned expansion of its retail outlets across the country.

Under the expansion plan, NNPC is seeking to expand the market share of its retail business to an appreciable level from the current 12 percent by building a mega station in every Senatorial district in the country in the months ahead.

Speaking during the flag-off of consultation during the week with a visit to the Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, the Group Executive Director, Commercial and Investment, Dr. Babatunde Victor Adeniran who led the NNPC delegation said the purpose of the visit was to solicit for the support of Kaduna State Government to provide lands for building new NNPC petrol stations in the state.

“Our mission is to build three mega stations, one each in the three senatorial districts of the state. We need about five thousand square meters for each of the station. Each station will have six pumps including that of Liquefied Petroleum Gas which is cooking gas,” the GED said.

Governor El-Rufai who was visibly elated expressed gratitude to NNPC management for deciding to flag-off the outlets expansion programme in Kaduna Sate, adding: “Any time NNPC comes visiting, it comes with good news”.

The governor who gave express approval for lands to be made available NNPC for the mega stations said: “I want to assure you that we will give you all the support that you need. The State Director of Lands will take the NNPC project team round the state to look at alternative sites. I don’t know how many you are building, we can give you as many as ten sites if you want”.

He stated that the supply of petroleum products was a key requirement for the prosperity of the country, adding that he was happy that NNPC was ready to invest heavily in the retail business to ensure that Nigerians are not exploited by private sector marketers.

He pledged the support of the state government to the success of the NNPC in general and the Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company (KRPC) in particular.

Speaking in similar vein during the consultative visit to Kano State, Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje described NNPC as an indispensable business ally for socio-economic growth of Kano State and the country at large.

“Indeed, collaborating with the NNPC is indispensable if we are to achieve socio-economic development of the State. Kano State being the largest in terms of population and also the commercial nerve center of the North, there is no better organization to have an alliance with than the NNPC,” Gov. Ganduje said.

He said he has already directed the Commissioner of Lands to work with the NNPC project team in selecting sites that meet the commercial requirement of the new filling stations in all the senatorial districts of the state.

“We know the philosophy behind establishing such retail stations. Considering that you are the custodians of crude oil and petroleum products in the country, one may wonder why you are into retail business.

“But those of us in governance understand the situation because if you leave everything to the marketers, then the problem of control especially of the price and availability will become difficult”, Gov. Ganduje enthused, adding that NNPC mega stations have integrity and do not require any enforcement for compliance on approved prices of petroleum products.

In a related development, the Governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Badaru Abubakar, has pledged support for the NNPC retail outlet expansion project.

Gov. Abubakar who spoke when he received the NNPC delegation for a consultative meeting on the retail expansion project said he has directed the Ministry of Lands to provide alternative sites that meet the stipulated requirements for NNPC to choose from.

Dr. Adeniran expressed gratitude to the governors for their unwavering support for the aspirations and success of the Corporation.

Politics / Police Arrest 11 Suspected Cultists Terrorising Badagry by vivianblog(f): 3:57pm On Jan 17, 2016
The Police on Sunday said 11 suspected cultists arrested for terrorising residents of Badagry were undergoing interrogation ahead of being charged to court.
The News Agency of Nigeria learnt that the suspects, believed to be members of a group known as “one million-boys’’, were apprehended while trying to rob residents of Toga area of Badagry.
The suspects, who claimed to be students, were arrested by vigilante youth in the area on Friday and the timely arrival of the police prevented them from being lynched by an angry mob.
The police apprehended the 11 suspects and took them to the Badagry Police Station.
A police source said that the suspects would be properly interrogated and the culpable ones among them would be charged.
“These suspects are claiming to be students, not robbers, so we are going to interrogate them properly to get to the bottom of the matter.
“Those of them we find culpable would be charged; we would make sure that we rid this area of hoodlums because Badagry is known to be a peaceful place and we intend to maintain that.

“People must learn not to take laws into their hands, but always report suspected cases to the police,’’ the source said.
Residents in the Ajara, Ibereko, Topo and Aradagun areas of Badagry, in the past two weeks, have being living in fear due to the activities of the group.

Religion / Fire Guts Christ Embassy, Alaba Market by vivianblog(f): 7:40am On Jan 15, 2016
A section of the Christ Embassy Church on Oregun Road, Ikeja, Lagos, was gutted by fire on Wednesday, destroying some property of the church.

This is just as goods estimated at millions of naira were destroyed in an inferno that ravaged the Alaba International Market, Ojo, the second in less than a week.

Our correspondent learnt that the Christ Embassy fire started around 9pm after an electrical spark in the switch room of the church.

The quick response of officials of the Lagos State Fire Service, however, saved the day.

An official of the agency explained that the fire was contained within 30 minutes of active firefighting, adding that no life was lost.

He said, “Around 9.08pm on Wednesday, we got a call that there was a fire incident in the church. We deployed two 10,000 litres of water from our stations in Ikeja and Alausa. It was discovered that the fire was on the topmost floor of the church’s three-storeyed building.

“There had been an electrical spark in the switch room, which triggered off the fire. In about 30 minutes, we put it out.”

The PUNCH gathered that less than a week after nine shops were gutted by fire in the Alaba International Market, another fire destroyed some electronics items in the market on Wednesday.

Three shops were said to have been affected.

The spokesperson for the Lagos State Fire Service, Amodu Shakiru, who confirmed the two incidents, appealed to residents of Lagos to be more safety conscious.

Fresh N3.9bn for villa maintenance, N795m for website… all the alterations to Budget 2016
Controversies over the 2016 budget may have just begun, with a fresh N3.9 billion injected into the second version of the budget presented by Ita Enang, special adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on national assembly matters (senate). On December 22, 2015, the president had presented the appropriation bill before a joint session of the national assembly, and was well received as an expansionary budget aimed at stimulating the economy. On Tuesday, it was discovered that the budget was missing at the senate, and there have been speculations that it was withdrawn for correction. Senate President Bukola Saraki met Buhari immediately after the senate plenary session, and thereafter dismissed the reports, saying the budget was with them. The presidency said hundreds of copies of the budget were presented to the national assembly and all could not possibly be missing. TheCable obtained both copies of the budget and highlighted the disparities between the two versions of the 1,810-page document. Most of the changes made were relating to the state house and the presidency in general. Fresh N3.9 billion was included for routine maintenance of the presidential villa, while the amount stipulated for the purchase of BMW salon cars was reduced from N3.6 billion to N340 million. Below is a table showing the changes made to the 2016 budget:

Politics / FG To Introduce Death Insurance For Soldiers Fighting Boko Haram by vivianblog(f): 6:12pm On Jan 08, 2016
The Minister of Defence, retired Brig.-Gen. Mansur Dan-Ali, said on Friday that the Federal Government would introduce insurance package for soldiers fighting insurgency in the North-East.

Dan-Ali made the disclosure while briefing newsmen shortly after a Special Juma’at Prayer to mark the 2016 Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration in Abuja.

He said that already there were numerous packages enjoyed by the military as a way of motivating them to ensure the success of the ongoing counter insurgency operation.

“Normally we have package for the families of the fallen heroes but recently we are introducing the death insurance which has not been done before.

“It is an additional package by President Muhammadu Buhari to motivate our gallant armed forces and to take care of the families of the fallen heroes,“ he said.

The minister solicited for prayers from all Nigerians to ensure the defeat of the Boko Haram terrorists.

He said that the military was getting it right in the ongoing fight against insurgency, and expressed optimism that Boko Haram would soon be a thing of the past in the country.

“I believe Nigerians are fully aware of what the military has done so far and with their prayers everything will come to an end very soon,“ he said.

Earlier, the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, said that the prayer was part of recognition of the sacrifice made by men and women who laid down their lives to defend the country.

“We must continue to do this not only to motivate their families that are left behind but to also encourage our men that are presently fighting insurgency,“ Saraki said.

He called on all Nigerians to always remember the fallen heroes in their daily prayers and also pray for the unity and development of the country.

On his part, the Deputy Chief Imam of the National Mosque, Sheikh Ahmad Onilewura, prayed for the victory of the armed forces over the forces of evil in the country.

The prayer was attended by the Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Sadique Abubakar, The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed and the Minister of state for Environment, Alhaji Usman Jibrin, among others.

Politics / Fuel Scarcity: Student Makes Up To N5000 Daily Renting Out Generator Tanks by vivianblog(f): 1:54pm On Jan 05, 2016
Last November, the Department of Petroleum Resources, DPR, restricted fuel stations from dispensing into jerry cans due to prevalent scarcity at the time.

While it was bad news for many, especially owners of power generating sets, some have since taken it as a business opportunity.
Vivian Gist met Oladapo, not his real name, at the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Mega station in Ketu, where he and a host of others offer generator tanks to prospective fuel buyers.

Oladapo works in a team of three who take turns in convincing prospects at the station entrance and attending to already won customers.

Once you have agreed to patronise them, you go to a spot close to the entrance where they operate from. There, you leave your keg and you’re assigned someone to take the tank with you to the fuel pump.

After filling the tank with whatever quantity of fuel you so desire, you return to the spot and empty the tank into your keg. And for their service, you pay N100.

Oladapo told Vivian Gist that his team makes up to N5,200 daily. He said he decided to do it to stay busy as his school is on holiday.

“If I wasn’t here, I would just be watching movies at home,” he said.
Oladapo and his team are not the only ones in the business at the Ketu station. There are a few others including a mother and her son who have been making a living out of the ban.

However, if the words of one of the attendants at the station are anything to go by, Oladapo and co’s brisk business will be shut down soon.
The fuel attendant said they would be allowed to sell into jerry cans as from next week.

Oladapo is not fazed by that development though.

“By then school would have reopened,” he said.

Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu has filed a suit at the Supreme Court challenging the Court of Appeal ruling that nullified his victory in the last governorship election in the State.

The lead Counsel for the governor, Mr. Chibuike Nwokeukwu, disclosed this at a media briefing on Monday after a meeting of elders of Ukwa and Ngwa political bloc at Osisioma Aba.

He said the Appeal Court judgment was a rape of justice, which required further subjection to legal test at the Supreme Court.

Nwokeukwu urged Abia people to disregard the rumour making the rounds that the Court of Appeal had asked that Dr. Alex Otti of APGA be sworn in on Tuesday, stressing that Ikpeazu remains the state governor until proved otherwise by the apex court.

A fire outbreak in the early hours of today engulfed the entire main market of Yola town in Adamawa state.

A witness told Vivian Gist that the incident started since around 3am in the morning is still flaming up till this morning.
Goods worth millions of naira were consumed by the inferno which its trace is not yet discovered.

As at the time of filing up this report there has not been any official of the Nigerian fire service seen there or even the Nigerian police.

All efforts to reach officials proved abortive.
