Why are you all focused on the tautologies on my first post. I'm yet to see anyone who would disprove these ones. Oh Wait, it's obvious. These are tautologies.

Please remove the speck in your eye before undertaking the surely Herculean task of schooling others out of tautologies. And spell 'grammar' flawlessly whilst you are it, insufferable Missus I-Sabi-Pass.

Uyi Iredia: @ underlined: Thank you. Even Vivly couldn't escape from the sin of tautology. A tautology is obviously grammatical. Talk about a teacher teaching her students nonsense.
Teaching who nonsense? You're the only one here grouping all tautologies as wrong grammer. I know my topic is a tautology.

Btw, while you were trying to debunk my logic, you forgot others that were plain obvious. Why? Contradictory? Talk about picking the easy one.

tinoblinx: Pls, "4am in the morning" is as wrong as past experience. Check ur facts well. 4am means 4'o_clock in d morning, so y add morning again?
Experience is defined by its context, not prefix. My experience with my ex girlfriend was a memorable one. And I also wish to hav such experience in the future. Pls don't use "past experience" it is wrong

A-ZeD:
I disagree with the bold part. Lets take the case of small minority.
The dictionary meaning of small is
1) Being below the average in size or magnitude.
2) Limited in importance or significance; trivial

The dictionary meaning of minority is
a)The smaller in number of two groups forming a whole.
b) A group or party having fewer than a controlling number of votes.

Having looked at the meaning of both words, we should be able to conclude that a group of people can be in the minority camp but they are not limited in importance or significance.
To buttress the point above, i'll use the presidential election as an example. GEJ cannot win the election in a two party system with a 51% of the valid vote count. In that case, those who voted for the opposition are a minority but they are in no way small because their number even though is less than those who voted for GEJ is significant to force a re run of the election.
Rather, use smaller minority. It shows there is a larger one. Not small minority.

EducationRe: Common Grammatical Tautologies by Vivly(op): 7:15pm On Nov 23, 2013
D sage: Those phrases are not really a tautology considering the fact that some of them needs proper clarification when giving out instruction. Eg "past experience" experience is not limited to the past, it's of past, present and future. E.g, someone can ask " would you like to experience it"?

And how on earth would you says 4am is tautology? 4 indicates exact time,so how is that a tautology?

Please go and re-examine all what you called tautology.
So the sentence '4am in the morning' doesn't sound like one right?
EducationRe: Common Grammatical Tautologies by Vivly(op): 7:09pm On Nov 23, 2013
naijaguy77: Sorry but you are wrong on several counts. Language is about context, and English is no different.

1) Very Beginning is CORRECT. 2) Small Minority is CORRECT. Again6) Past Experiences is absolutely correct. 7) Old Adage is 100% correct. This one has nothing little to do with context. The word Adage is defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as "A proverb or short statement expressing a general truth." Nothing to do with how old the proverb or statement is. It may have been coined yesterday. So 'Old Adage' is an adage that is quite old, simple.

I shall leave it at this. Just remember, the English Language is a living Language, it keeps on changing. So quit quibbling over semantics and concern yourself with syntax.
See how you went for those tautologies that you could easily do justice to. Check the others listed and analyse.

Samelle: Vivly, while I do agree with some of your observations, I have to add that some phrases are found that way in the English Language and are so for emphasis. Others have remained unchanged because of prolonged usage and have thus been accepted.
Prolonged usage of wrong tautology doesn't make it right. How can someone say or else? 'Shut up or else I'll beat you'. It's either it's 'or' or 'else'

Yahoo1: now here is a guy that paid attention to Literature! Vivly take note.
In as much as some of the facts are incorrect, they are still tautologies. A deeper view, breakdown of the concepts will show this. Most of those facts are accepted as spoken english, maybe due to constant usage but it doesn't change the fact that it's a tautology

You all trying to dispute the facts based on claims that some of the adverbs were used for emphasis should try to check the dictionary meaning of the words. Why the unnecessary repitition? .

Why are you contradicting yourself Uyi, are you trying to debunk the facts, cuz in some instances, your post claims otherwise. Don't just argue for the sake of argument please.
