A-ZeD:

I disagree with the bold part. Lets take the case of small minority.
The dictionary meaning of small is
1) Being below the average in size or magnitude.
2) Limited in importance or significance; trivial

The dictionary meaning of minority is
a)The smaller in number of two groups forming a whole.
b) A group or party having fewer than a controlling number of votes.

Having looked at the meaning of both words, we should be able to conclude that a group of people can be in the minority camp but they are not limited in importance or significance.
To buttress the point above, i'll use the presidential election as an example. GEJ cannot win the election in a two party system with a 51% of the valid vote count. In that case, those who voted for the opposition are a minority but they are in no way small because their number even though is less than those who voted for GEJ is significant to force a re run of the election.

Rather, use smaller minority. It shows there is a larger one. Not small minority.

Vivly: Well, some are use wrongly. Example is Buy your recharge card here. How can you buy what's yours

Get some facts right ma'am.

'Yours' in the real contextual meaning is not subjectively possessive.

You 'buy' it, then It become 'yours'.

Learning though.

Wat if I say my recent /current experience with Vivly.
Vivly: If it's your current experience, then maybe you should stop sharing this now and go on experiencing your whatever.
P.S. What's the dictionary meaning of experience?
experence is a collection of events.
Sometimes words re used to arrange invents in oda of occurrence

E.g , my past experience with Mukina is the same as my recent with vivly, hope I don't experience it with anoda lady in the future.

Experience can be in a continuous term. (not only past)

E.g, we are currently experiencing power outage

Vivly: .I wonder why they are liking that your post. Those are tautologies for christ's sake. Some are rightly used and others are blatantly abused. Why are you contradicting yourself Uyi, are you trying to debunk the facts, cuz in some instances, your post claims otherwise. Don't just argue for the sake of argument please.

Frown face. Seriously, is there any other thing we frown? Why not say frown alone.

Shrug one's shoulders Same thing for frown.

Dry lake.If a lake has dried up, it is no longer a lake.

Original copy A copy is not original. It is just a copy.

Emergency situation All occurences are situations. It's just an emergency.
.

'Original copy' is not a tautology when you mean the printed edition of a book...like in, "I asked for the original copy of the article not this edited crap."

I think generally, the idea of whether or not to phrase a group of words as tautology hinges on the context of their use.
Re: Common Grammatical Tautologies by tinoblinx: 7:56pm On Nov 23, 2013
D sage:

Those phrases are not really a tautology considering the fact that some of them needs proper clarification when giving out instruction. Eg "past experience" experience is not limited to the past, it's of past, present and future. E.g, someone can ask " would you like to experience it"?

And how on earth would you says 4am is tautology? 4 indicates exact time,so how is that a tautology?

Please go and re-examine all what you called tautology.

Pls, "4am in the morning" is as wrong as past experience. Check ur facts well. 4am means 4'o_clock in d morning, so y add morning again?
Experience is defined by its context, not prefix. My experience with my ex girlfriend was a memorable one. And I also wish to hav such experience in the future. Pls don't use "past experience" it is wrong

@Vivly.
You actually said that?. There's nothing like small minority or smaller minority or smallest monority. It's the minority.
Again, it doesn't matter how small in the minority.

Ezeed: Op, nice thread. Dont mind me though, i feel like looking for small trouble this evening, so pls grant me your audience.lol. Okay, regarding your title- 'common grammatical tautologies', the word 'tautology' already has the word 'grammatical' embedded in it. By reason of the aforementioned, your use of both the way you did is tautologous. Lol.
On a serious note though, what you guys think, cos i stand to be corrected, and I feel like engaging in an educative discuss right now.

.
Tautology may refer to:
Tautology (rhetoric) , a self-
reinforcing pretense of significant
truth
Tautology (grammar) , the use of
redundant words
Tautology (logic) , a universal
truth in formal logic
Tautology (rule of inference) , a
rule of replacement for logical
expressions
Tautonym , a species name where
both parts are identical

Busted!! One should not say "very wrong". The degree of 'wrongness' does not vary and as such, cannot be comparative.
In essence, what you should have said is "that is wrong".
