Politics2027: Obi-kwankwaso Bid Faces Northern Resistance by Vixlot(op): 6:13am On Jun 07
The presidential ambition of former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, is facing serious resistance from some northern political stakeholders and sections of the electorate, findings by Sunday PUNCH have revealed.

Some of the stakeholders, who spoke with our correspondents, disclosed that “majority of northerners” had yet to embrace his party, the Nigeria Democratic Congress.

It was also gathered that some northern leaders had started warning their followers against the party, while portraying Obi and his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, as anti-northern interests.

In one of the political materials being circulated across some WhatsApp platforms in the region, Obi and Kwankwaso were projected as “haram” (forbidden).

On Tuesday, there were reports that some angry youths in Ungogo Local Government Area of Kano State burnt Obi and Kwankwaso’s campaign posters.

Similarly, a member of the Kano State House of Assembly, Muhammad Tomas, who recently joined the NDC from the All Progressives Congress, returned to the APC.

APC Primaries: How Yusuf Buhari defeated ex-DSS DG’s son

Yusuf Buhari, son of former President Muhammadu Buhari, has emerged as the winner of the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election in Daura/Sandamu/Mai’adua Federal Constituency seat of Katsina State.

Announcing the results, the chairman of the constituency’s APC primary election committee, Lawan Garba, said Yusuf Buhari secured 17,342 votes, defeating his opponent, Auwalu Musa Daura, who polled 480 votes.

Garba subsequently declared Yusuf Buhari as the APC flag bearer for the Daura/Sandamu/Mai’adua Federal Constituency in the forthcoming general elections.

In his acceptance speech, Yusuf Buhari expressed appreciation to party members and supporters across the constituency for the confidence reposed in him.

He pledged to work with all stakeholders and supporters of the party to ensure APC’s victory in the 2027 elections.

He also called on his opponent and other party members to join hands with him in the interest of unity and the overall success of the party.

“I will embrace everyone and carry all party members along to ensure that APC emerges victorious in the general elections. I sincerely thank the people of Daura, Sandamu and Mai’adua for coming out in large numbers to support me,” he said.

However, Auwalu Lawan Daura, son of former Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Lawal Daura, rejected the outcome of the exercise, alleging irregularities in the conduct of the primary election.

Speaking to Daily Trust shortly after the exercise, Daura said he was dissatisfied with the manner in which the direct primary was conducted, claiming that the process did not comply with party guidelines.

According to him, many of those partook in the exercise were not registered APC members.

“I am not satisfied with what happened today. Evidence is everywhere showing the injustice that was done. The manner of counting was highly questionable, and most of the people counted did not even have party membership cards,” he alleged.

Daura further explained that his decision to participate in the primary election was not intended to disrespect the party leadership or any individual, but was driven by his belief in justice, fairness and internal democracy within the party.

He maintained that every aspirant deserved a level playing field and insisted that party processes should be conducted transparently to sustain members’ confidence in the APC.

CrimeArmy Strikes IPOB/ESN Strongholds, Recovers Explosive, Ransom Funds by Vixlot(op): 2:38am On Apr 15
ARMY STRIKES IPOB/ESN STRONGHOLDS, RECOVERS EXPLOSIVE, RANSOM FUNDS

Troops of the Nigerian Army (NA) under Operation EASTERN SANITY have intensified offensive operations across the South-East, decisively overrunning IPOB/ESN strongholds and pushing the criminal elements into disarray. Relentless pressure mounted by the troops, backed by superior firepower, intelligence and joint-force synergy, has continued to expose the group’s weakening structure and inability to withstand sustained military action.

On 14 April 2026, joint troops of Sector 1, supported by the Air Component of Operation UDO KA, launched a precision strike and clearance operation in Ajali Forest, Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State. The offensive forced IPOB/ESN elements into a chaotic retreat, abandoning critical assets, including an anti-tank Improvised Explosive Device (IED). The failed attempt to deploy the device underscores the group’s desperation and declining operational competence. The IED was safely secured by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Security team, averting potential harm to troops and civilians.

Troops have since established firm dominance over the general area, sustaining aggressive clearance operations and systematically dismantling all terrorist infrastructure. The deliberate destruction of hideouts using chainsaws and bulldozers has stripped the criminals of cover, leaving them exposed, scattered and unable to regroup or mount any meaningful resistance.

In a related intelligence-driven operation on the same day, troops of 82 Division Garrison deployed at Adani in Uzo-Uwani LGA, acting on credible intelligence from the Department of State Services, tracked and intercepted ransom proceeds linked to a kidnapping syndicate. The swift raid led to the arrest of a notorious kidnap suspect, further exposing the group’s reliance on criminality to sustain its collapsing network. Exploitation of the area led to the recovery of a pump-action rifle and the sum of Two Million Naira (₦2,000,000), Cash believed to be ransom funds, from the suspect’s residence.

The suspect and recovered items have been handed over to the appropriate authorities, for a through investigation to track other members of the criminal gang. The operation further degraded the IPOB/ESN’s operational and financial capacity. These outcomes further demonstrate that IPOB/ESN elements are steadily losing ground, resources and cohesion under sustained military pressure.

The Nigerian Army remains unrelenting and fully committed to annihilating all criminal and insurgent elements, denying them any sanctuary. The NA further assures law-abiding citizens of its unwavering resolve to protect lives and property and urges lcontinued public support as operations intensify to restore enduring peace and stability across the South-East.

Supreme Court Dismisses David Mark's Application for Stay of Execution

The Supreme Court has dismissed an application for stay of execution of an Appeal Court ruling that led to the decision of electoral body, INEC to derecognize the Senator David Mark leadership of the Action Democratic Congress, ADC.

This dismissal by the Apex Court on Tuesday followed the withdrawal of the application by senator Mark's counsel Jibril Okutekpa, SAN.

Okutekpa had informed the five-member apex court panel headed by Justice Lawal Garba that INEC's interpretation of the Court of Appeal decision on March 12 has made the party 'leaderless.'

He says the 'injunctive order' for the aggrieved parties to maintain 'status quo antebellum' is the reason for the current leadership vacuum in the ADC. He prayed the court for urgent action in view of the time constraints in the lead up to next year's crucial polls.

In its intervention, the apex court gave procedural directions to fast-track the process, including abridging time for filing briefs and responses, due to the time-sensitive nature of the matter, ahead of the 2027 elections.

It scheduled the substantive hearing of the appeal for Tuesday, April 22, 2026.

The original dispute stems from a suit by Nafiu-Bala Gombe (former Deputy National Chairman), who is challenging the legitimacy of Mark and Aregbesola’s leadership. INEC has withheld recognition of either faction pending court resolution of the leadership tussle.

Gombe sought, among other things, to restrain Mark (as National Chairman), Rauf Aregbesola (as National Secretary), and others from parading as ADC leaders, and to stop INEC from recognizing them.

On or around April 1, 2026, INEC removed Mark and Aregbesola's names from its portal as National Chairman and Secretary, citing the Appeal Court's "status quo" order and related correspondence.

PoliticsTukur Buratai justifies Jilli airstrikes, insists market is terrorists hub by Vixlot(op): 9:18am On Apr 13
A former Chief of Army Staff, retired Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, has described the recent airstrike on Jilli Market as a necessary military action against a terrorist stronghold.

Mr Buratai, in a statement on Sunday, said the strike was based on credible intelligence indicating that Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters were using the market for logistics and operations.

He acknowledged reports of civilian casualties, noting that the loss of the innocent lives was painful and deeply regrettable.

The former army chief, however, commended the Nigerian Air Force and intelligence agencies for what he described as courage and professionalism in executing the operation.

According to him, Jilli market has a long history as a terrorist logistics hub in spite of repeated military raids and closures over the years.

He recalled that troops had occupied the area during Operation LAST HOLD in 2018, engaging insurgents in several encounters.

Mr Buratai noted that terrorists continued to exploit the market with the cooperation of some individuals who patronised and supplied them.

He stressed that insurgents often embed within civilian populations, using them as shields, thereby complicating military operations.

“No military wishes to harm civilians, but when such locations are persistently used by terrorists, action becomes necessary,” he said.

He urged residents of Geidam, Gubio, Damasak and Ngamdu to desist from trading in markets linked to insurgent activities.

According to him, communities that continue such interactions risk exposure to military operations targeting terrorists.

Mr Buratai therefore called for sustained public support for the armed forces, emphasising that decisive action remained key to ending insurgency.

He added that while the nation mourned the innocent victims, it must remained resolute in confronting terrorists.

He also prayed for the repose of the souls of those who died and speedy recovery for the injured.

PoliticsElectricity Generation Rose To 4,300MW From 3,951MW — FG by Vixlot(op): 8:17am On Apr 13
Electricity generation rose to 4,300MW from 3,951MW — FG

The Federal Government on Sunday announced that electricity generation increased from 3,951MW to 4,300MW between March 28 and April 10.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued in Abuja by the Special Adviser to the Minister of Power on Strategic Communications and Media Relations, Mr Bolaji Tunji.

Tunji said the gradual rise in generation output within the period aligns with the assurance earlier given by the Minister of Power, Mr Adebayo Adelabu, at the Power Sector Working Group, where he pledged improved electricity supply within two weeks.

He explained that the improvement coincided with a steady increase in gas supply to thermal power plants, which rose from approximately 605 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd) to over 704 mmscfd within the same timeframe.

Tunji further stated that mechanical availability remained stable and even improved, peaking at over 7,796MW in early April, while operational availability rose from about 4,208MW to a peak of over 4,694MW, indicating enhanced efficiency in converting available gas into electricity.

“Despite minor fluctuations recorded on some days, the overall trajectory points to a gradual recovery in the power sector, driven largely by improved gas supply and better coordination among critical stakeholders,” he said.

He added that the strong correlation between gas availability and generation output underscores the need for sustained interventions in the gas-to-power value chain, given Nigeria’s reliance on thermal power plants.

“To consolidate the gains recorded so far, the minister recently inaugurated a Gas-to-Power Monitoring Committee to ensure improved coordination, real-time monitoring, and sustained gas supply to generating companies.

“The committee is expected to address bottlenecks in gas delivery, enhance synergy between gas producers and power generation companies, and ultimately guarantee a more stable and reliable electricity supply across the country,” he said.

Tunji noted that the minister remains committed to sustaining and improving the gains recorded in the coming weeks.

He assured Nigerians that ongoing reforms and targeted interventions would continue to yield measurable improvements in power generation and supply.

“We are not there yet, but we will continue to ensure measurable improvements,” he said.

Tunji also said the minister urged the new management of the Nigeria Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA) to improve its Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).

Adelabu gave the charge during a visit by the newly appointed Managing Director of the agency, Mr Olusegun Adesayo, and the Chairman of the Board, Mr Ikechi Nwosu, to his office over the weekend.

The minister advised the agency to focus on boosting IGR while reducing dependence on government appropriation, particularly for operational costs.

He also urged the management to establish more meter testing centres across the country to enhance its operations.

Expressing confidence in the new leadership, Adelabu assured that the full board of the agency would be inaugurated soon.

“I have no doubt about your ability, and I can also say that with your appointment by the president, you will do well. The President knows what he is doing by appointing you, and any appointee of the president will have my full cooperation,” he said.

He further decried the shortage of manpower, particularly meter installers, and reiterated the need for collaboration between the National Power Training Institute of Nigeria and NEMSA to address the challenge.

“We need to ensure more installers are trained in order to accelerate the government’s plan to bridge the meter gap in the country,” he said.

On meter testing stations, he said, plans should be made to establish them across all geopolitical zones.

He also urged the NEMSA Managing Director to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the agency to identify key challenges.

Earlier, Adesayo informed the minister of his engagement with other agencies to secure their support and highlighted areas where the ministry’s assistance would be required for effective service delivery.
