Politics / 6 Types Of Voters In Nigeria. What Type Are You? by voiceofnigeria(m): 10:30am On Jan 16, 2015
In few weeks to come Nigerians will be casting their votes in the 2015 elections. One of the things we should be talking about right now is why people vote and for whom they vote for.

Some people think Nigerians only vote based on ethnicity and religion. However, the voting behaviour is not so one-directional. Last year, Christians voted for Babatunde Fashola as well as Muslims did. Yoruba people voted for Jonathan in Lagos, but voted for Ribadu in Osun. The point is, the voting patterns don’t fit a narrow spectrum, and various things determine the choices Nigerians make when they cast their ballot. These are six types of voters that are most prevalent in Nigeria.

The revolutionists

Who they are: These people really just want one thing: change. Every other thing is negligible to them. Their belief is that the incumbent is the problem and that having someone new there will be the solution. These people have concluded that things won’t ever be better if the incumbent continues to run the government. So they’ll vote for any candidate except the incumbent in order to kick the incumbent out and produce a change.
ekiti-election-pdp.jpg

The partisans

Who they are: These ones often vote in adherence to their favourite party. For them it’s not really about the candidate. It’s about the party. They will vote for anyone their favourite party brings forward. They’re convinced that their party is the answer to the problems in the country and that anyone this party presents is the suitable candidate. This is whom they’ll vote for. No matter what they learn about this party, they’re convinced that it’s better than the others and that voting for this party is the wise choice to make.

The ethnicists

Who they are: Ethnicists aren’t chiefly interested in partisanship or change. Their loyalty is to the candidate whose tribe, religion or sex matches theirs. In other words, they want to vote for their own person. This person may not be the most qualified or the most fit for the position. But since he or she is their person, it’s whom they want to vote for.

The devotees

Who they are: Devotees are inclined towards the man of the people. They support charismatic people, someone who bonds with them or whose personality they simply love. These people don’t look at the party or religion or ethnicity of the person they’re voting. They admire the person because of his character, his attitude towards people and his public image and they just feel endeared to him. If this candidate moves from one party to another, they’ll still support him in the new party as they would have done if he was in the former party. They’re devoted to specific candidates more than anything else.

The sophisticated

Who they are: These ones are fastidious about politicians and rarely commit to anyone. They like to ask questions and examine candidates very carefully before voting for anyone. They don’t just go with the crowd or follow sentiments. They ask questions. They look at the facts. They check the records. They observe the candidates. They actually think about the person’s ideas and ideology before making a choice. They’re hard to win over, but they’re often ardent in their support when they commit to someone.
nigeria-elections

The cynics

Who they are: The cynics think everyone on the ballot paper is unsuitable, that they’re all the same corrupt and incompetent people and that it doesn’t matter whom you vote for anyway. They feel it’s going to be the same story at the end of the day and that nothing will change. They tend to think of voting as choosing between the lesser of two evils. They may or may not vote. But when they vote, it’s often out of obligation, not because they feel strongly about voting or feel strongly about voting for anyone on the list. They’re convinced that it’s not going to change anything.

Analysing voting behaviour helps us understand how people make up their minds about whom to vote for. It helps us determine how much progressing we’re making as a democracy and how well the electorate is making the right choices that will contribute to the development of the country. But whatever the pattern, the point is, people should be voting for what’s best for them and what’s best for their society.

What type are you? grin grin grin

If we can continue with this vibe as a people, then it is very sure that even if Buhari messes up during his tenure

same song of shame we are currently singing to GEJ as
we usher him out of the national apex seat.

That means we are beginning to get it right as a Nation.

Politics / Nigeria Remembers: I Will Defeat Boko Haram Before 2015 – Gej by voiceofnigeria(m): 8:29pm On Jan 15, 2015
A political group comprising former aspirants under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Goodluck 2 Goodluck (), yesterday (15/03/2014) boasted that the security challenges posed by the Boko Haram sect in the North East will be over before 2015 as soon as the security strategies adopted by this administration begin to blossom.

The chairman of , who was the PDP governorship candidate in Edo State, General Charles Airhiavbere, told newsmen after the meeting of the group in Abuja, that the support for President Goodluck Jonathan has not waned despite the security challenges in the country.

He noted that with the restructuring going on in the PDP, Jonathan will emerge the party’s candidate for the poll.

Gen. Airhiavbere said, “It is unfortunate that we are experiencing the issue of the Boko Haram. As for me, it is a terrorist insurgency on the country. If it affects A, it affects B and the president is doing everything in his capacity to ensure that this is brought to a halt”.

Politics / Pastor Receives N10m Donation After Naming APC Islamic Party by voiceofnigeria(m): 5:45pm On Jan 12, 2015
As February 2015 general elections approaches fast, Venerable Felix Okonkwo, a cleric of the Anglican Communion in Delta state, has warned Christians to be suspicious of the opposition All Progressive Congress (APC) saying it is an “Islamic party” with fanaticism as its mantra.

Okowa_udughan
Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan and Ifeanyi Okowa during the service.

Ven. Okonkwo, who is also the governorship aspirant of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State, said this in his address during a special thanksgiving service in honour of Ifeanyi Okowa.

He told the audience: “As Christians we have a right to our faith, Nigeria belongs to all of us. If you look at the party, you will agree with me that it is out to promote and propagate the ideas of Islamism. We cannot support such a party. If you go through APC you will know that they have nothing good for this country. Their business is to kill and destroy.”

Okonkwo appealed to the congregation which comprised the incumbent Governor of the Delta State Emmanuel Uduaghan, to be watchful so that the APC won’t be successful in its attempt to set Islamic program on Nigerians.

The cleric, who is the Vicar-in-Charge of St. Phillips Anglican Church, Asaba, venue of the service, asked for understanding and forgiveness by all within the fold of the PDP in state so that they can put up a combined front during the February polls.

Okonkwo then pleaded Governor Uduaghan to fund the church in implementation some of its developments, the governor in turn announced a donation of N10 million towards the completion of a building project within the church grounds.

Delta State is a main stranglehold of the ruling PDP in Nigeria’s oil-rich Niger Delta, the home state of the incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan, a Christian, whose most prominent combatant in the presidential battle is a Northern Muslim, General Mohammadu Buhari of the opposition APC.

Politics / We Will Give Nigerians 3 Days Of Sex Free If Buhari Wins - Nigerian Prostitutes by voiceofnigeria(m): 9:20pm On Jan 10, 2015
As presidential elections in Nigeria coming closer the excitement among different segments of the population is growing. Even prostitutes did not remain indifferent, they promised all Nigerians three days of free sex if General Muhammadu Buhari wins.

Members of the National Association of Nigerian Prostitutes, NANP, called on Nigerians to vote out President Jonathan if they want changes and as a bonus they offered a three day sex for free. Such actions are believed to be caused by the PDP-led government’s attitude to the women who turned to prostitution only to make ends meet.

The sex workers demand to stop their discrimination and ask for legal recognition of their trade as a job. They have repeatedly criticised the present government for social rejection, constant harassment by the police and deprivation of their rights as humang beings.

Several months ago a Nigerian prostitute Patoo Abraham who led other sex workers in a protest in Lagos for legalization of prostitution said, “Just as you are proud of your profession, that is how I am proud of mine. Just as you are respected for being a journalist, that is how I want to be respected.

People call us names but the funny thing is that they don’t even know if their wives, sisters or daughters are one of us. If I don’t tell you that I am a sex worker, you won’t know unless you see me here. Most of us are working as nurses in big hospitals, some are bankers and even students, but you won’t know.”

Although the information about three day free sex marathon is rather doubtful and yet to be confirmed, Nigerians took to Twitter to share their reactions.

Lmaooooo wait wait wait. There’s a National Association of Nigerian Prostitutes or these people are trolling?

Politics / Woman Kidnapped By Boko Haram In Gumsuri Escapes, Narrates Bitter Experience by voiceofnigeria(m): 5:37pm On Jan 01, 2015
A woman, recently kidnapped by Boko Haram militants in Gumsuri together with 184 other females and children, miraculously escaped from the captors.

It would be recalled that the insurgents killed 32 and allegedly abducted scores in Gumsuri town, Borno State, located close to the infamous Chibok where more than 200 school girls were kidnapped in April, 2014.

According to the latest update by Daily Trust, one woman managed to flee the camp.

The victim, who is currently safe in the state’s capital Maiduguri, described her escape as “miraculous” and prayed God to pave way for other mates to regain their freedom.

She narrated how people were used by the abductors.

“We were kept in a camp at Zongare village and there is vast farmland there. We work morning and afternoon on the farmland, sieving beans and packaging it into bags. Our captors do a lot of exercises, they also practice handling of firearms. Sometimes, some of them would disappear for one or two days and then reappear. Captives are being forced to eat only beans.”

Meanwhile a residents of the town said with reference to the woman’s words that only 4 militants had been guarding the hostages and the others had gone for an operation, BBC Hausa Service reports.

Violent actions have been recently observed in the area around Chibok. December 29, Boko Haram were said to have killed at least 15 people in Kautikari village, situated close to Chibok and to Cameroon border.

Crime / Please Jail My Father, He Raped Me - Girl Begs Police by voiceofnigeria(m): 12:58pm On Dec 31, 2014
A 55 year-old man known as Osaro has been jailed by the police in Edo state
for raping his own 9 year-old daughter.

Osaro’s wife, Stella said that Osaro had impregnated their older, 17-year-old
daughter, and she revealed to journalists that he returned to him only after he
said has changed and given his life to christ.

She said: “My husband wanted to sleep with my second daughter. He later
succeeded in sleeping with my other daughter. After impregnating the girl, he
begged me several times to forgive him.

“He started the church I attended and confessed what he had done. The
church members begged me and I accepted him. He has already paid my bride
price so I went back.

“After we had settled, my husband started with our daughter again. The little
girl told me what she was going through in the hands of her father. I asked
my husband, but he denied. He said he had stopped the act since he
repented.

“One afternoon, I caught him with our daughter. I went to the church and
vowed that I cannot continue with the marriage. I am tired of forgiving him all
the time.

“On Christmas Day, he drove me outside at about 8 p.m. He was alone inside
with the children. The next day, my daughter told me what he did to her. When
I decided to check my daughter’s private part, he wanted to beat me, but
neighbours intervened.

The 9 year-old in visible tears begged the police officers to lock the man
away.

Politics / Why Buhari Is Not Fit For Presidential Seat by voiceofnigeria(m): 12:27pm On Dec 31, 2014
The 2015 presidential election in Nigeria is coming very soon. The polls are almost here. Today, December 10, 2015, is the final battle for the presidential candidates of the opposition All Progressive Congress (APC). The former Head of the State General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) is among them.

Last week, Naij.com wrote about good sides of the retired General, now we offer you to have a look at his shortcomings.

1. Coup-plotter

General Buhari is a coup plotter. He planned the coup that exiled a democratically-elected president. Major-General Buhari was nominated to lead Nigeria by middle and high-ranking military officers after the successful military coup d’etat that overthrew civilian President Shehu Shagari on December 31, 1983. Buhari was chosen as the Head of State and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, and Tunde Idiagbon was appointed the Chief of General Staff (the de facto No. 2 in the administration). Buhari justified the military’s capture of power by criticizing the civilian government as hopelessly corrupt, and his administration subsequently initiated a public campaign against indiscipline known as “War Against Indiscipline” (WAI).

2. Abuse of human rights

Human rights must be protected and must not be abused. Immediately General Buhari seized power, he proclaimed that he would “tamper with” the press. Soon, the infamous Decree Number 4 was broadcasted, which made even the publication of the truth a punishable offence. Under this cover, Buhari jailed innocent journalists, including Tunde Thompson and Nduka Irabor. He abolished civil liberties, promulgated retroactive decrees enabling him to kill Nigerians through jungle justice, proscribed civil society organizations and professional groups and exercised “absolute” power.

3. Buhari jailed Fela Anikulapo-Kuti

A decree was passed that nobody take out or bring in foreign currency into the country. He imprisoned a Nigerian multi-instrumentalist, musician, composer, pioneer of the Afrobeat music genre, human rights activist, and political maverick Fela Anikulapo-Kuti on trumped up charges under emergency law, which prompted the sentencing judge to confess that he was ordered to do so and to apologize to Fela. It was Buhari’s administration that said it has “decided to deal with this Fela problem once and for all.” Buhari locked up politicians without trial.

4. The leader of the North
Without any doubt, Buhari has massive support in the North. Indeed, he is the most popular Northern politician in the Nigeria today. But that precisely remains his undoing at the centre. Even in the North, his support base is limited to the Muslim population. He does not appeal to Northern Christians. Then there is the added factor of the opposition of his implacable opponents among the Northern elite.

5. Age
Buhari is no Nigerian Mandela and never laid claim to that. Last December 17, General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) turned 71. A lot of his competitors says that he is not able to rule Nigeria because he is not young enough. He will be 73 in 2015 and he should reveal to us his health status. At 72, most people actually live on drugs and food supplements. May be his time has passed and he is of more use to Nigeria and Nigerians out of the presidency?

6. Islam Fundamentalist

Many times Buhari repeated that he is not a religious fanatic. But let’s recall just his desire of Sharia implementation in some northern states and concluded that the Islamic legal system has restored sanity in the affectedstates. Recently the APC presidential aspirant, says that he can pick a Muslim running mate for the 2015 election if he emerges victorious at the party’s primary election.

7. He is not loyal

Buhari has been a candidate in every election since 2003. Twice as the candidate of the All Nigeria Peoples’ Party (ANPP) and once as the candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC). Both parties are now defunct having merged with a third-party, the Action Congress of Nigeria. The ACN was the main base to form the APC. If he succeeds in becoming the APC candidate later this year, it will make it his fourth attempt in a row. He dumped from party to party chased the lucky for being president. Just before the 2011 elections, Buhari addressed a campaign rally in Lagos where he made it known that it would be his last shot at the office. But he didn’t keep his promise and try again.

Politics / 1000 PDP Supporters Defect To APC In Kwara by voiceofnigeria(m): 12:11pm On Dec 31, 2014
Information just reaching us indicates that no fewer than 1,000 supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Owode/Onire constituency of Asa local government area of Kwara State have defected to the All Progressives Congress, APC.

According to Leadership newspaper report online, the former PDP supporters who were mainly youths declared their support for APC when the speaker of the State House of Assembly and APC candidate for Asa/Ilorin West federal constituency for next year’s election, Razak Atunwa, took his campaign train to the area.

It was disclosed that the defecting supporters, who were led by Malam Fatai Ballah, lamented that disorganisation and instability in the PDP have made their continued stay in the party impossible.
The youths also extolled the virtues of the leader of the APC in Kwara state, Dr. Bukola Saraki and acknowledged the achievements of incumbent Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed.

This development occurred during a programme organised by Alhaji Amuda Morocco, the coordinator of Owode/Onirin constituency for Atunwa campaign organisation in Ballah, Asa local government.

This massive defection is happening after it was reported that a House of Representatives aspirant, Aisha Osori, who won the recently held primaries on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja, defected to the APC.

Osori emerged winner at the recent AMAC/Bwari federal constituency primary in the Federal Capital Territory.

It was gathered that on December 30, 2014, she announced her decision to denounce membership of the PDP after “watching the APC conduct its presidential primary in a fair and competitive manner and after seeing the combination of Osinbajo and Buhari, both men of integrity”.

According to reports, Osori disclosed that Osinbajo was her teacher at the University of Lagos, saying that the APC slogan “Change” is enough reason to support the party.

Crime / Mother Killed Baby Because She Repeatedly Turned Into Python by voiceofnigeria(m): 4:17pm On Dec 29, 2014
A young woman who killed her baby daughter appeared at Kwamhlanga Magistrates Court, Mpumalanga, South Africa.

The 27-year-old woman, whose name is not disclosed, appeared in court charged with the murder of a five-months-old baby. Trying to justify her actions a young mother claimed that her daughter repeatedly turned into a python trying to swallow her alive.

These alleged transformations made the woman threw her own baby into a pit toilet, where the innocent girl died. Later the woman confessed that she had heard voices telling her “to take the baby back to the waters she had come from”.

By the end of the trial the woman was ordered to be detained and referred to a mental institution for examination. This is not the first time children became the victims of insane parents or those willing to justify the murder with witchcraft.

One month ago a 10-year-old boy was thrown into Imo River in Akwa Ibom state over witchcraft accusations but luckily survived. A similar incident occured in the same area where three children and their father were accused of witchcraft and escaped lynching.

In Nigeria, some pastors have incorporated African witchcraft beliefs into their brand of Christianity resulting in a campaign of violence against young Nigerians. Children and babies branded as evil are being abused, abandoned and even murdered.

The preachers make money out of the fear providing costly exorcism services of their parents and their communities. In the states of Akwa Ibom and Cross River about 15,000 children were branded as witches and most of them end up abandoned and abused on the streets.
