More Than 10million Nigerians Starting From 19 Years Old, Used Cannabis In 2022 – NAFDAC Laments A statement from NAFDAC on Sunday said the Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, disclosed this during the launch and dissemination of the 2022 Annual Report of the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) and Precursors Report 2022. The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) says 10.6 million people, representing 10.8 per cent of the population, used cannabis in the past year. A statement from NAFDAC on Sunday said the Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, disclosed this during the launch and dissemination of the 2022 Annual Report of the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) and Precursors Report 2022. Makesense Media reports, She said the report revealed that cannabis is the most commonly used drug, with the average age of initiation of cannabis use among the general population put at 19 years. She said, “Cannabis use was seven times higher among men (18.8 per cent among men vs. 2.6 per cent of women), while the gender gap in the non-medical use of pharmaceutical opioids (such as tramadol) was less marked,” she said. The NAFDAC boss said Nigeria would not support the trend of legalization of cannabis for non-medical use as Nigeria lacks the financial capacity to fight cultivation, production and illegal use of the substance. While saying that the non-medical use of cannabis, contravenes the United Nations Single Convention of 1961, which classifies cannabis as a highly addictive substance, she said the Nigeria Indian Hemp Act as well as the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA Act prohibits the cultivation, production, distribution, sales and use of cannabis and its extracts or derivatives for medical or non-medical purposes. She said the NAFDAC, the NDLEA, the Nigeria Customs Service and other stakeholders in the health sector, had promised to collaborate in fighting against illicit drug production, trafficking, and use. She said narcotics and psychotropic substances are indispensable for the relief of pain and suffering, adding that they are, however, classified because of the potential for abuse and the need for medical use of the substance. According to her, one of the control objectives is to ensure availability solely for medical and scientific uses while minimizing the possibility of diversion to illicit channels and abuse. Executive Chairman, NDLEA, Buba Marwa, decried the upsurge in abuse of cannabis amongst Nigerian youths, saying it has attendant negative effects on the society. He said the NDLEA conceptualised War Against Drug Abuse WADA in 2021 to address the issue. Marwa, represented by Mrs. Victoria Ekase, said NAFDAC had been ensuring that controlled drug essential for human survival were made available for use where necessary in line with the requirements of INCB. https://makesensepromotions.com/more-than-10million-nigerians-starting-from-19-years-old-used-cannabis-in-2022-nafdac-laments/ cc: mynd44 , seun

FCT: PDP, LP lose scores of members to APC The People’s Democratic Party and Labour Party have lost scores of members in the Federal Capital Territory to the APC just 48 hours before the presidential and national assembly elections. According to The News Agency of Nigeria, the APC welcomed the defectors on Wednesday in Abuja. Frontline Tinubu supporters, led by Dr. Hawa Iyatu-Bagu, the National Coordinator of the National Mass Movement for Better Orientation, claimed that the development was proof that the APC would win the elections on February 25. Iyatu-Bagu said that the organization had been in touch with the defectors for a very long time, saying, ”Today, those that accepted the truth have decided to follow the winning team.” She said, “We have been going around canvassing for votes, and most of them here are only the leaders because if all of them were here, this place could not contain them.” “So, we now ask their leaders and some of them to come here and make it public about their decision to dump the PDP and LP and declare their readiness to vote for Tinubu and Shettima.” “With this development and what we have seen so far in the course of our campaigns across the nooks and crannies of Nigeria, Nigerians, especially women, are ready to vote for the duo.” The coordinator also stated that the youths were ready to ensure the landslide victory of Tinubu, assuring the defectors of equal treatment. According to her, the APC presidential candidate will reciprocate any gesture done to him with quality leadership. Also speaking, the Deputy National Coordinator of NAMMBO, Ibrahim Umar, lauded the Tinubu support group for attracting the defectors into the fold of APC. Umar said that the chances of Tinubu winning the presidential election were very bright, adding that Nigerians were eager to vote for Tinubu and Shettima. Earlier, Mr. Titus Musa, a former PDP Youth Leader in Gwarinpa Ward, Abuja Municipal Area Council, who led defectors, said they decided to defect to the APC to vote for Tinubu. He said, ”This is due to his record of excellent service in Lagos and his contributions to national development.” ”We are convinced by the APC manifesto, The Message of Hope.” APC is the way to go, and Tinubu has something to offer Nigeria. “We have seen the light in Tinubu, and we are ready to join hands with him to move our country to the desired level. I believe the way Tinubu transformed Lagos, if given the mandate, he will do a lot for the country. ”Therefore, we decide to defect from the PDP to the APC together with our teeming supporters, compromising youths and women.” On her part, the former Labour Party Women leader in Gwarinpa Ward, Ms Zipporah Bitrus, said that they left LP to APC as Tinubu and Shettima were the best for the country. ”Tinubu is a person who is always concerned about uplifting ordinary citizens. “He had mentored many Nigerians and that is why we see the reasons we pitched our tent with APC. Makesense Media reports that the high point of the event was the presentation of the APC flags to the defectors, symbolizing their formal integration into the party’s larger family. https://makesensepromotions.com/fct-pdp-lp-lose-scores-of-members-to-apc/

Obi’s candidacy tainted by ethnic chauvinism, he’s not democratic – Tambuwal Aminu Tambuwal, governor of Sokoto, says Peter Obi, standard-bearer of the Labour Party (LP), is not “democratic enough” to be president. Tambuwal, who is the director-general of the PDP presidential campaign council, spoke at the party’s campaign rally in Yola, the capital of Adamawa. Makesense Media report that, The Sokoto state governor said among the candidates contesting to be president, Abubakar alone has the capacity to “lead Nigeria to the promised land”. Tambuwal said Nigeria “cannot afford” to vote for presidential candidates who have not gathered the required “experience at the federal level”. “The argument has been made, issues have been joined and it is clear that only Atiku and Okowa are prepared to lead this country in a united manner. Atiku is competent, he has the capacity that we require today. We must not make the mistake of voting for APC again,” he said. “I will not talk about Labour because their candidate was the governor of Anambra state, he was not able to conduct one single local government election. “I challenge the Labour people to bring that record where Peter Obi was able to conduct a local government election, so how can he now be attempting to be president of Nigeria when as governor he could not organise local government elections? He is not democratic enough. In any case, his candidature is tainted by ethnic chauvinism and we know what that will portend for Nigeria. “In any case, his party has not been able to even field enough candidates for national assembly elections. And in any case, they have not been able to muster agents over the 170, 000 polling units”. Tambuwal asked the youths at the campaign ground to “ensure that they mobilise” their parents to vote for Atiku Abubakar in the presidential election. https://makesensepromotions.com/obis-candidacy-tainted-by-ethnic-chauvinism-hes-not-democratic-tambuwal/

NNPC: Fuel subsidy now above N400bn monthly The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd. (NNPCL) reports that the monthly payment for Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) has surpassed N400 billion. Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPCL, made the announcement on Friday in Abuja during the ongoing Final Cutover to NNPC Ltd. from being a corporation. Mr Kyari stated that the oil company would continue to meet its obligations by providing PMS for Nigeria, but that the monthly subsidy of over N400 billion had put a significant strain on NNPCL’s cash flow. According to him, NNPCL is the sole importer of petrol into Nigeria and has been doing so for several years, bearing the enormous cost of fuel subsidy. Makesense Media facts gathered that, He said other private oil marketers stopped importing petrol into Nigeria due to the difficulty encountered in accessing the United States dollars, required for the imports of PMS. “Today, by law and the provisions of the Appropriation Act, there is subsidy on the supply of petroleum products, particularly PMS into our country. In current data terms, three days ago the landing cost was around N315/litre. “Our customers are here, we are transferring to each of them at N113 per litre. “That means there is a difference of close to N202 for every litre of PMS we import into this country. In computation, N202 multiplied by 66.5 million litres, multiplied by 30 will give you over N400 billion of subsidy every month,” he said. Mr Kyari said that the continuous funding of petrol subsidy by NNPCL had been ongoing without refunds from the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning, despite the fact that subsidy had been budgeted for in the Appropriation Act. “There is a budget provision for it. Our country has decided to do this. So, we are happy to deliver this, but it is also a drain on our cash flow, and I must emphasis this. “For as we continue to support this, you will agree with me that it will be extremely challenging for us to continue to fund this from the cash flow of the company when you do not get refunds from the Ministry of Finance,” he said. He expressed assurance that it would continue to support the country and deliver energy security. https://makesensepromotions.com/nnpcl-fuel-subsidy-now-above-n400bn-monthly/

2023: North not supporting southern presidency — Northern elders Northerns Elders Forum (NEF) has said the region has made sacrifices and played a crucial role in the peaceful coexistence of Nigeria. He said the north is not in support of zoning the presidency to the south. Speaking at the General assembly of the Northern Elders, the group’s convener, Professor Ango Abdullahi, said the north has paid its dues. This is just as he said that the north will not accept their victory in the election being denied. “Obasanjo couldn’t get 10,000 votes in front of his house, I said to the journalists that spoke to him rudely most of the times, I said he will be president in Nigeria by the votes of Northern Nigeria and he did, we got paid back somehow, it wasn’t appreciated as such. “Who voted Abiola? The North did in my sitting room to defeat Tofa. All these are sacrifices being made by northerners. “And even you are talking about the years in power since 1999 till date, Obasanjo ruled for 8 years, Jonathan ruled for 6 years which is 14 years, Umaru Ya’ardua did 2 years and Buhari is doing 8 which is 10 years,” he said. The northern elder said the region is hoping that the election will be conducted free, fair and credible and anybody who wins the election must be accepted as the winner of the election without sentiment, and if there is any attempt to subvert it, then the north will be ready to counter. https://makesensepromotions.com/2023-north-not-supporting-southern-presidency-northern-elders/

Why we dropped late Ikonne’s running mate – Abia PDP The leadership of the Abia chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has explained why it dropped Hon. Okey Igwe, the running mate to the late Prof. Uche Ikonne. The Publicity Secretary and Vice Chairman Abia North, Hon. Amah Abraham, said Igwe was dropped because he has dual citizenship Makesense Pm gathered that, During a telephone interview with the News Agency, Amah said PDP took the decision to avoid going into the March 11 contest without any governorship candidate. He said: “Our former guber candidate is deceased and as a result of that, a section of the Electoral Act was activated. That section of the Electoral Act which was activated requires a primary to be conducted and in conducting fresh primaries means that a new candidate must emerge from the party and that was exactly what has happened. “A new candidate has emerged and one of the legal privileges of a candidate who emerged as a flagbearer of the party either as a governor or a President is the first privilege that accrues to the person is the right to nominate his or her running mate. “Nobody or institution compels you to adopt somebody. Of course, a candidate can choose his running mate by consulting with the party, but it is the candidate that will eventually determine his or her running mate. “So, when Prof. Ikonne died, the joint ticket with his deputy or running mate died as well. Whoever that was his running mate ceases to exist as a running mate because nobody elected the running mate in any party primary. The person who was elected was Prof. Ikonne and that is the person who is vested with the powers to nominate. “If he who was nominated had died, the nominator would have been empowered to re-nominate another person. That is what happened. “The truth is that he is a very qualified person. The truth is that we feel so bad that he is no longer the deputy governorship candidate of the party. But you see, his private interest as an individual cannot override the interest of the party. “One of the reasons the new governorship candidate didn’t consider him (Okey Igwe) is also based on legal issues and one of those legal issues is that as of the time that he (Okey Igwe) was already a running mate, a matter came up in a Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where a candidate was challenged that in a Federal High Court that he is not eligible on the grounds that he has dual citizenship and the Federal High Court ruled in the matter that anybody who has pledged allegiance to a foreign country cannot be qualified to stand for public office in Nigeria. That person was disqualified. “Now, the person took the matter to the Court of Appeal and the Court of Appeal quashed the decision of the Federal High Court and the matter is before the Supreme Court. “He is a dual citizen; he has served in the American Military and the rest of the things that were part of the plus which he had as a person and if for any reason those things which were part of his plus have now developed legal challenges, then we cannot because of his individual interest take a risk that will make our party go into an election without a candidate. “As a party, we felt that it was not necessary to start talking about the challenges that made the party to drop him but we are now addressing this issue because of the position that he (Okey Igwe) is taking now and that is why it has become important that we explain to the public reasons for our actions.” https://makesensepromotions.com/why-we-dropped-late-ikonnes-running-mate-abia-pdp/

Justice Abiola Soladoye of the Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic and Violence Court on Tuesday handed down the sentence after finding Anyanwu guilty of the offence. Anyanwu was arraigned on April 17, 2022, on two counts of defilement by the Lagos State Government. The offence was said to have been committed between 2019 and August 2020 at Arowojobe Street, in the Oshodi area of the state. According to the prosecution, the offence is punishable under Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015. The defendant pleaded not guilty when he was arraigned, trial commenced and ended on October 11, 2022. The prosecution called six witnesses, while the defendant testified as his sole witness. When the matter came up on Tuesday for judgment, Olushola Shoneye announced his appearance for the state, but the defence was not represented. During the trial, the first prosecution witness testified that though she is now 15-year-old, she was 13-year-old at the time incident happened. She testified that the defendant was known to her as the pastor of their church and that he had been having sex with her and warned her not to tell anyone. The victim stated that the defendant said she would not get pregnant, but she eventually got pregnant and had a child for the defendant. The second prosecution witness, the older sister to PW1, now 19-year-old, but was 17-year-old, at the time of the incident, collaborated the first witness’ testimony that the defendant was their pastor. She narrated how the defendant had sexual intercourse with her with the consent of her parents, that he would take her abroad for greener pastures, and she started visiting him. A guardian and counsellor with Lagos State, Mrs Memunat Dawudu, who collaborated on the evidence of the victims, testified that she got to know about the matter on August 3, 2020, from the Oshodi Primary Health Centre. The father of the victims, in his testimony, stated that he knew the defendant, as he was a church member, and also his friend that he was responsible for his two daughters’ pregnancies. He said he was aware that the defendant was having sex with his daughters. The mother of the victims, in her evidence, stated that she was shocked when she found out that her two daughters were impregnated by the same man. Makesense PM reports gahtered that, Anyanwu, who testified, in his defence, said it was the father of the victims who gave him the second prosecution witness, as a wife and they were having conjugal relations. While delivering judgment, the judge held that the prosecution was able to discharge the burden of proof placed on it, on the charge of defilement. Justice Sholadoye held that the three ingredients of defilement, were that the child was underage, the defendant had sexual intercourse with the victim and the consent of the child was not sought. She said,” I am convinced of the evidence led that the defendant is guilty as charged for the offence of defilement. “The police shied away from their responsibility by not charging the father of the victims along with the defendant. “The parents of these victims are highly irresponsible and reckless in their parenting. The negligence of their children has contributed to them now being grandparents of two additional mouths to feed. They should have been sanctioned and brought to justice. “The parents of these two victims, who are biological sisters, acted irresponsibly by allowing their so-called pastor friend to deceive them that he will help them take their children abroad when the defendant cannot even help himself. “Nduka Anyawu, you are hereby sentenced to life imprisonment, in respect of count one and count two. “The sentence is to run concurrently, his name should be registered in the Lagos State offenders’ register.” https://makesensepromotions.com/lagos-pastor-sentenced-to-life-imprisonment-for-impregnating-two-sisters/

There’s no way Obi will win presidential election – Dele Momodu A spokesperson of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP Campaign council, PPC, has said it’s practically impossible for the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Peter Obi, to win the forthcoming presidential election. Eyes Of Lagos report that, Peter Obi is one of the leading candidates of the presidential election, with Bola Tinubu representing the All Progressives Congress, APC and Atiku Abubakar standing in for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. The PDP chieftain was reacting to a poll result released on Friday which rated the LP candidate as having 95 percent chance of winning the election. Speaking on Arise Television’s The Morning Show on Monday, Dele Momodu said Obi cannot win in the Northern part of the country. “In the South West, I can tell you that three people are going to share Lagos votes Tinubu, Peter Obi and Atiku. There’s nothing to argue about it this time. “The three will get their 25 percent then I don’t know who takes the lead and that’s all that we [the PDP] need…so whenever you have two Southern candidates, it’s going to be difficult and you can see that Obi is eating into the Southern votes. “It would be a fantasy of the highest order for anybody to say Obi will win most parts of the North. It’s impossible. I’m not a gambler. “I would have put a bet on it but I’m telling you that it’s impossible. You see, polls are today based on the theory of who is likely to vote and of course it depends largely on technology…polls that said Obi will win the North are faulty polls. “Obi cannot win the election. There’s no question about it.” https://eyesoflagos.com/2023/02/13/theres-no-way-obi-will-win-presidential-election-dele-momodu/

Appointments in government are skewed on basis of nepotism and mediocrity - Obasanjo President Olusegun Obasanjo has raised an alarm about economic gains the country recorded in the first decade of the century, being reversed by the government in power in the last decade. Makesense Promotions gathered that, Speaking at the 50th anniversary of Federal Government College, Kaduna, Obasanjo stated that the economic situation in the country has increased hardship, insecurity, and affected the quality of leadership. The former President who noted that appointments in government are now skewed and lopsided on basis of nepotism and mediocrity and disregard of merit and competence, added that the country has been deliberately divided along religious, ethnic and other fault lines. He said; “ONCE AGAIN, OUR NATION IS DANCING ON THE PRECIPICE AND SOME OF US ARE TRULY WORRIED ABOUT THE STATE OF AFFAIRS TODAY. I EXPRESSED THAT WORRY IN MY OPEN LETTER TO NIGERIANS AND NIGERIAN YOUTHS ON NEW YEAR’S DAY,” HE SAID. “AS I STATED IN THE LETTER; ‘IF WE FALL PREY AGAIN, WE WILL HAVE OURSELVES TO BLAME AND NO ONE CAN SAY HOW MANY MORE KNOCKS NIGERIA CAN TAKE BEFORE IT TIPS OVER. TO BE FOREWARNED IS TO BE FORE-ARMED.’ OF COURSE, I PRAY THAT NIGERIA WILL NEVER TIP OVER. WE MUST CONSTANTLY WORK AT IT AND PRAY. “MY WORRY IS PREMISED ON A NUMBER OF ISSUES. FIRST, I AM CONCERNED THAT THE CURRENT STATE OF OUR NATION’S ECONOMY HAS WIDENED THE GULF OF INEQUALITY AND LEFT MANY PEOPLE IN DESPAIR. INFLATION IS ON THE RISE; POVERTY AND HARDSHIP HAVE RETURNED TO MANY HOUSEHOLDS. THE LAST DECADE HAS REVERSED MANY OF THE ECONOMIC GAINS THAT WERE MADE IN THE FIRST DECADE OF THE CENTURY. THERE IS A GENERAL SENSE OF HOPELESSNESS ACROSS THE NATION WITH SEEMINGLY UNCONTROLLABLE INSECURITY. “IN ADDITION TO THE ECONOMIC HARDSHIP IS POLITICAL MISCHIEF. NEVER HAVE WE BEEN SO POLITICALLY DIVIDED ALONG RELIGIOUS, ETHNIC AND OTHER FAULT LINES AND DELIBERATELY SO. APPOINTMENTS IN GOVERNMENT ARE SKEWED AND LOPSIDED ON BASIS OF NEPOTISM AND MEDIOCRITY AND DISREGARD OF MERIT AND COMPETENCE. “ELECTIONS ARE HERE AND MAY COMPOUND THE PROBLEM. POLITICAL PARTIES AND POLITICIANS HAVE NOW BEEN EMBOLDENED TO DISCARD SOME OF THE THINGS THAT WERE PUT IN PLACE TO GIVE ALL GROUPS A SENSE OF BELONGING. EXCLUSION IS BEING TAKEN AS NORMAL. DISUNITY STARES US IN THE FACE AND MANY OF OUR LEADERS ARE MORE CONCERNED ABOUT THEIR SELFISH INTERESTS THAN THE SURVIVAL AND HEALTH OF OUR NATION.” Obasanjo also warned that the coming presidential election is not one to be trifled with. According to him, the concerns raised about the presidential candidates are real and Nigerians would have themselves to blame if they do nothing about the situation. He said; “LET ME REITERATE THAT THE CONCERNS BEING RAISED ABOUT THE NATURE OF THE OPTIONS BEFORE US IN THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS FOR INSTANCE ARE REAL AND SHOULD NOT BE TRIFLED WITH,” THE STATEMENT READS. “NIGERIA BELONGS TO US ALL AND NO PART OF THE COUNTRY SHOULD BE LEFT IN DOUBT ABOUT THEIR PLACE IN THIS UNION ON ANY BASIS WHATSOEVER; ETHNIC, RELIGIOUS, LANGUAGE, REGION, CULTURE OR SOCIAL STANDING. “THE BEAUTY OF DEMOCRACY IS THAT THE OPTIONS BEFORE US CANNOT BE IMPOSED ON US IF WE ALL DO WHAT WE NEED TO DO TO SEND A MESSAGE TO THOSE WHO HAVE HAD THE AUDACITY TO PRESENT THOSE OPTIONS TO US WITH LITTLE OR NO INTEREST FOR THE 225 MILLION NIGERIANS. “IF WE CHOOSE TO DO NOTHING, WE WILL ONLY HAVE OURSELVES TO BLAME. IF WE CHOOSE TO DO THE RIGHT THING, WE WILL BY SO DOING RETURN THIS COUNTRY ON THE RIGHT TRACK; ONE WHICH GIVES ALL OUR PEOPLE A SENSE OF BELONGING AND A SENSE OF UNITY OF PURPOSE AND A STAKE IN THE PROJECT NIGERIA; A PROJECT THAT WILL GIVE ALL OF US PEACE, SECURITY, STABILITY, SHARED PROSPERITY, HOPE AND PROGRESS AND A PLACE WITHIN THE COMITY OF NATIONS.” https://makesensepromotions.com/appointments-in-government-are-skewed-on-basis-of-nepotism-and-mediocrity-obasanjo/
