Atiku Abubakar Visits Ex-President Jonathan, Criticises APC’s Performance . Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Wednesday visited ex-President Goodluck Jonathan in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital. During the visit, the form VP criticised the ruling All Progress Congress (APC) for failing to address unemployment and other problems in the country. Apart from accusing the Muhammadu Buhari administration of failing to strengthen the economy, Abubakar said the government had failed to overcome security challenges and other problems. Consequently, he said it was up to the Peoples Democratic Party under which he hopes to run for the presidency in 2019 to seize power and fix the nation’s problems. “It is only the PDP that has the strength and the structure to get back to Aso rock. There is no other party that has the structure and strength to display popularity than the PDP,” he said. Abubakar added, “Without PDP, APC would not have been in Aso Rock. PDP will go back to Aso Rock. Have we ever had this rate of unemployment before in the country? Have we ever had five rates of dollar exchange in the country? “Have we ever had so much of insecurity as we have today? No. Have we ever been so divided in this country like we are today? No. So how can I be satisfied?” On his part, Jonathan said the PDP, having survived the crisis it faced after being voted out of power in 2015, has become stronger and fit to reclaim power at the federal level. The former president also believes that the opposition party has the structure for good governance in Nigeria. He said, “We had some issues in 2015 but the party is coming back and getting stronger. And I agree totally with the former Vice President that PDP is still, even though we are in the opposition, the strongest and largest party. “We knew what made us lose the elections in 2015. It is not because PDP didn’t have that strength to do so. PDP being in 2015 had the strength to have won the election and 2019, PDP will go back.” Apart from his visit to Jonathan, the former Vice President also paid a courtesy visit to the Bayelsa State Governor, Mr Seriake Dickson. http://www.vondanews.com/atiku-abubakar-visits-ex-president-jonathan-criticises-apcs-performance/

Mother of Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau speaks, says she doesn't know whether he is alive or dead Fatima, the mother of Abubakar Shekau, the leader of Boko Haram, says she is not sure whether her son is dead or alive and that the last time she ever set eyes on him was 15 years ago. In an interview with the Voice of America Hausa, the old woman said since her son met with Mohammed Yusuf, founder of the sect, he has stayed away from her. “I don’t know whether he is dead or alive, only God knows. I have not seen him in the last 15 years. I did not set my eyes on him since he came into contact with Mohammed Yusuf. I know he is my son, and everyone knows a mother’s love for her son, but our attitude to life is different… He has thrown many people into disasters. Where can I find him to draw his attention? He has thrown many people into violence, but I ask God to guide me'' she said The elderly woman said Shekau’s late father was the Imam of the village Mosque before his death. Shekau took leadership of the group after the death of its founder, Mr Yusuf, who was killed in police custody. http://www.vondanews.com/mother-of-boko-haram-leader-abubakar-shekau-speaks-says-she-doesnt-know-whether-he-is-alive-or-dead/

Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, says any government that watches its poeple get killed everyday without working to stop such a trend, is an irresponsible government. Amechi said this at an APC rally in Rivers state over the weekend. ”Every government has a responsibility to protect lives and property. The reason there is a government is because the people are alive. If a person dies there will be no government. Any government that watches its people killed every day is an irresponsible government. Governor Wike watches his people killed every day. I met a woman yesterday whose husband was killed in front of her with her son watching. It could have been any of you. I can assure you today that this government of Wike has failed. When I was your governor, you slept and I kept awake. As governor, I chased away criminals to their holes. I know that the reason they are into crime was because they had no money for them. I knew that for you to stop a man from crime you need to provide an alternative means of livelihood. And to do that, I started building infrastructures. I built schools, hospitals and health centres. A lot of people were employed in each of the schools and health facilities I built.” he said http://www.vondanews.com/any-govt-that-watches-its-people-get-killed-every-day-is-irresponsible-rotimi-amaechi/

Former adviser to former vice president Atiku Abubakar, Umar Ardo, has threatened to sue President Buhari if he confers the titleof GCFR on late MKO Abiola. Ardo in a statement released today, said president Buhari has no power to confer national honours on anyone without first seeking for and obtaining the approval of the National Council of State. The statement reads: “Pursuant to the powers of the Council of State in section 6(a)(iii) of Part 1 to the Third Schedule of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) to advise the president on the matter of awarding National Honours, I call on President Mohammadu Buhari to immediately convene a meeting of the National Council of State to deliberate and advise him on his decision to award National Honours to the Late Chief MKO Abiola, Ambassador Babagana Kingibe and Chief Gani Fawehinmi before performing the planned investiture ceremony on Tuesday, this is simply to comply with due process of law. “Driven by the need to determine whether in the president’s decision to confer the said national awards constitutional due process of law had been followed, I telephoned and asked a former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and a serving Member of the Council whether to the best of his knowledge the issue had at any time been raised in any of the meetings of the Council of State and the advice of the said Council sought and obtained, he informed me and I verily believe him that it was never ever raised nor the advice of the Council ever sought or obtained. “Therefore to go ahead and perform the investiture ceremony as planned is to indulge in flagrant illegality.” He former adviser argued that: “Having campaigned on, sworn-in and is on oath to govern this country in accordance with the provisions of the constitution and due process of law and to defend and protect the said constitution, the president cannot confer national awards on the Late Chief MKO Abiola, Ambassador Babagana Kingibe and Chief Gani Fawehinmi or anyone else without subjecting his decision to the advice of the Council of State as stipulated in the constitution. “To do so is a breach not only of the constitution but also of the oath sworn to by the president and that is unacceptable.” “Consequently, in pursuit of my civil right and obligation as a citizen that I am governed by the provisions of the Constitution, I will institute a court action demanding compliance with the provisions of the constitution in the award of the said National Honours if the government goes ahead with the investiture ceremony without abiding by the due process of law.” Umar Ardo explained that: “It is important, however, to state here that I have absolutely no objection to the president conferring such national honours to Late Chief MKO Abiola and Chief Gani Fawehinmi, and, indeed, that they richly deserve such awards and much more, but it is only right to do the right thing rightly. “My current call and possible court action is solely motivated by the obligation to enforce the rule of law and constitutionalism in the process of governing this country.” http://www.vondanews.com/i-will-sue-president-buhari-if-gcfr-title-is-conferred-on-mko-says-ardo-former-atiku-abubakars-aide/

A human rights activist and renowned lawyer, Femi Falana(SAN) has dared the Muslims Rights Concern, MURIC, to sue his rapper son,Folarin Falana popularly known as Falz to court if they are aggrieved by his trending “This is Nigeria” video. It would be recalled that the group during the week released a statement ordering Falz to take down “This is Nigeria” video which, according to them, ridicules their religion because some girls were seen in the footage wearing hijab and dancing shaku shaku. They also threatened to take a legal action against the rapper after the expiration of the ultimatum given to him. But reacting to the threat in a telephone chat with Entertainment Plus, the renowned lawyer said in as much as freedom of speech is constitutionally guaranteed in the country, nobody has the right to threaten another person. According to him, the video in question contains a lot of messages and desired to be encouraged by anybody who has the interest of this country at heart. Speaking further, Falana said he has confirmed that his son, who’s also a lawyer by profession is handling the threat within the ambit of the law. “My son is a lawyer and I have confirmed that he’s handling the threat within the ambit of the law. The video in question contains a lot of messages and it should be encouraged by anybody who has the interest of our country at heart.” “Since the group has threatened to sue him or threatening to sue him. My son has promised that he would meet them in court. I support that decision. We all belong to this country, nobody can threaten another person. Freedom of speech is constitutionally guaranteed. If you are aggrieved as a result of any publication or record, the appropriate thing for you to do is to go to court. I’d hope that they will go to court at the expiration of the ultimatum given to my son,” said the renowned lawyer. Also, reacting to the threat in an Instagram post, popular comedian cum singer, Helen Paul said “I am an actor that uses costumes to depict a character. Hijab is a head covering, it’s not a religion. Islam is a religion of peace and not of war. Peace, love. Can’t fight for God, just be happy, hate not.” Meanwhile, in a tweet through his management, Falz said the video won’t be taken down. They urged the group to head to court to address their grievances and that they were ready to meet them there. According to the rapper, “The video has been very well received. Even initially when I was releasing it, I didn’t anticipate the magnitude of reaction… I thought there will be some form of reaction and conversation but I didn’t know how largely it will be received. “It was important, first of all, I was inspired by the original, This is America by Childish Gambino, I thought it was a very artistic and creative way to tell the American story and I thought it will be amazing to tell the Nigerian story in a similar fashion. It was very important to stir up a heightened level of political and social consciousness out here,” Falz said. However, since the video was released, the rapper has received accolades as well as knocks in some quarters for tackling social ills in a country where pop stars rarely criticize the system. The group has issued a seven-day ultimatum to Falz, ordering him to withdraw the video and apologise to Nigerians or face legal action. It also urged security agencies and the National Film And Video Censors Board,NFVCB, to clamp down on the video. In a statement by MURIC signed by its director, Ishaq Akintola, the group said it is offended that some girls dressed in hijab were dancing ‘shaku shaku’ in the music video. It also described the video as thoughtless, insensitive and highly provocative and intended to denigrate Islam and Muslims. http://www.vondanews.com/femi-falana-backs-son-falz-over-controversial-video/

Nigeria has been ranked the 16th least peaceful country in the world, according to the 2018 edition of Global Peace Index, GPI. The report, released yesterday, ranked Nigeria 148 out of the total 163 countries surveyed. Nigeria Iceland is the most peaceful country, closely followed by New Zealand and Austria while Syria is ranked least peaceful, coming after Afghanistan and South Sudan respectively. In Sub-Sahara Africa, Nigeria is ranked 40 out of 44 countries, with Mauritius topping the list, while South Sudan is ranked least. According to the report produced by the Institute for Economics and Peace, IEP, global level of peace has deteriorated by 0.27 percent in the last year, marking the fourth successive year of deterioration. It also said the world is “less peaceful today than at any time in the last decade.” It added that 92 countries deteriorated, while only 71 improved. Nigeria is one of such countries, up one place from its 2017 ranking of 149. In 2016, Nigeria was pegged at 149, while the figure was 151 for both 2015 and 2014. The report said the global economic impact of violence was $14.76 trillion PPP in 2017, equivalent to 12.4 percent of global GDP, or $1,988 per person. The report covers 99.7 percent of the world’s population and uses 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators from “highly respected sources” to compile the index. These indicators are grouped into three key domains: ‘ongoing conflict’, ‘safety and security’, and ‘militarisation.’ All three domains deteriorated over the last year. “There’s been a gradual decline in peacefulness over the last decade,” said Steve Killelea, head of IEP. “The reason for this slow, gradual decline in peacefulness really comes back to the conflicts in the Middle East and North Africa, and the spillover effects into other areas.” http://www.vondanews.com/nigeria-ranked-16th-least-peaceful-country-in-the-world/

Facebook users will be able to lip-sync live to their favorite tunes as the social media behemoth on Tuesday unveiled its first personalized features as part of licensing deals with music labels. Facebook founder: Mark Zukerberg Under the new lip-sync function, Facebook users will be able to select hit songs to share on their live streams. As the music plays, those tuning in will see their friends sing, dance or do whatever else the music inspires them to do. Users can also post descriptions of their lip-sync performances. The live feed will clearly state the song and the artist and give viewers a chance to click and follow the musician on Facebook. Dubbed Lip Sync Live, the feature looks set to be a competitor to Musical.ly, the popular karaoke-inspired app that originated in China. Facebook also said it would allow users to incorporate licensed music to accompany video posts, initially in select markets and eventually around the world. Announcing the new music projects in a blog post, Facebook — which also owns Instagram — said that it planned more options in the future. “We’re looking forward to continuing to work with the music industry to create new ways for people to connect and express themselves through music across our family of apps,” a Facebook statement said. The new features come several months after the company sealed licensing agreements with the three major music label conglomerates. Despite reaching two billion people, Facebook historically has been relatively inactive on music as rivals such as Apple and Google invest heavily in the fast-growing streaming sector. While music including homemade videos is omnipresent on Facebook, the company regularly takes down embedded content that is copyrighted. The licensing agreements will help Facebook users include music more seamlessly http://techbroom.com/facebook-music-feature-allows-lip-sync-of-songs/

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Ebenezer Babatope, has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for declaring June 12 as a new Democracy Day and posthumously awarding Chief MKO Abiola, Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR). President Muhammadu Buhari addresses the delegation after his Investiture as grand Patron by Nigerian Red Cross Society during a courtesy visit held at the Council Chamber State House in Abuja. The President who announced this on Wednesday in a statement signed personally, said that June 12 would now replace May 29 as the Democracy Day. Abiola, who was the presumed winner of the June 12, 1993 Presidential election, died on July 7, 1998. Babatope, a former Minister of Transport and member PDP Board of Trustees, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on phone that the president’s motivation was right. “Even though one may question the timing, the motivation is right. “We should commend Buhari for the declaration of June 12 as Democracy Day and the conferment of GCFR on the late MKO Abiola,” he said. Also Mr Wasiu Eshinokun-Sanni, the Deputy Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, said that the truth had prevailed. Eshinokun-Sanni, who noted that he received the news with a mixed feeling, commended the Lagos State Government to have recognised Abiola and Chief Gani Fawehinmi, a late human rights lawyer. “The good part is that effort of Nigerians in forgetting religious and tribal sentiments as exhibited by the June 12 elections is not in vain. June 12 is Democracy Day is also symbolic. “What Obasanjo (former President) failed to recognise all this while in spite being the greatest beneficiary of June 12, a Nigerian of northern extraction has brought it to the front burner,” he said. “Accordingly, after due consultations, the Federal Government has decided that henceforth, June 12 will be celebrated as the Democracy Day. ” Therefore, government has decided to award posthumously, the highest honour of the land, GCFR to late Chief MKO Abiola, the presumed winner of the June 12, 1993 cancelled election. “His running mate as Vice President Amb. Baba Gana Kingibe is also to be invested with a GCON. “Furthermore, the tireless fighter for human rights and the actualisation of June 12 elections and indeed for democracy in general, the Late Chief Gani Fawehinmi SAN, is to be awarded posthumously a GCON. “The commemoration and investiture will take place on Tuesday June 12, a date which in future years will replace May 29 as a National Public Holiday in celebration of the Nigerian Democry.” (NAN) http://www.vondanews.com/pdp-chieftain-lawmaker-hail-buhari-for-declaring-june-12-democracy-day/
